To blatantly re-post what Trish from Hey Lady! Whatcha Readin’? previously posted about First Book:

Mission: First Book provides new books to children in need addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy – access to books.

Inspiration: Kyle Zimmer, a corporate lawyer by day, tutored children at an inner-city soup kitchen by night. She discovered that the children she tutored had no books to read. That year, Kyle left her day job, and she and two friends founded First Book to provide new books and resources to the children who needed them the most. They delivered 12,000 books to local communities in the Washington DC area the first year.

Motivation: Kyle discovered that fully 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for the children they serve. Millions of children spend thousands of hours every week in programs and schools that are starving for resources necessary to improve educational quality.

Empowerment: By providing new books to children in preschools and after-school programs, mentoring and tutoring programs, shelters and day care centers and beyond, First Book provides resources to empower teachers and administrators. With access to high-quality books, educational materials and more, these caring leaders can better teach, plan curriculum and impart a love of learning, elevating the quality of the programs and opportunities available to children in need.

Achievement: Now, nearly 20 years later, First Book has delivered more than 65 million books to programs serving children in need across the United States and Canada. Learn more about the honors and awards received by First Book.

Well, since I haven’t written a Twilight or Stephenie Meyer post for a bit, I thought I would bring you this news which I discovered via Tracy at Bookroom Reviews this morning.

EW made this announcement yesterday,

For those of you who can’t get enough Edward and Bella, EW can announce — exclusively — that Yen Press will be publishing Twilight in graphic-novel form, publication date still to be determined. Though Korean artist Young Kim is creating the art, Meyer herself is deeply immersed in the project, reviewing every panel.

The EW that hits newsstands tomorrow, will have finished, colored illustrations for you to check out.

This will be really interesting! I must admit that I am really, really curious and would definitely check it out when published. And of course, Twilight fans will eat this up. What do you think?

Later, she was browsing Stephenie Meyer’s website for the first time and pulled up a photo of Stephenie Meyer at the Twilight premier and was surprised to see X’s mom in the photo. How cool, she thought! So she wrote a note to X’s mom and sent it with her daughter to give to X, to give to his mom.

Later, my friend was talking to her neighbor and telling her about this other mommy who got to meet Stephenie Meyer (she was under impression she must have won a trip, etc.). The neighbor asked what her name was and she said she couldn’t remember, she’d have to look it up. When she does, the neighbor quickly tells her that she’s not just a “normal” mommy but a famous and Newbery Award winning author. My friend Googles her, pulls up her website and sits in shock as she realizes that yes, this other mommy was indeed a very famous and Newbery Award winning author.

My friend calls me in a panic because she believes that she has just committed a very serious faux puax. She just sent a note to a famous author without knowing who she was, but worse, hadn’t heard of nor read any of her books. And on top of that, she gushed about how great it must have been to have meet Stephenie Meyer, not realizing that they were already friends. What to do, what to do? She was so nervous. I assured her that the author in question is the most down to earth, funniest, real, un-snobbish author I’ve ever met. She probably appreciated a note that was just from one mom to another. She is a mom after all. I doubt she wears her author hat all the time. I reassured her that she had nothing to be embarrassed about.

That story today reminded me of when Laurie Halse Anderson came to Salt Lake City and I was in her signing line a few people ahead of Sara Zarr, National Book Award author. Sara was chatting with a teenager about various books and the girl said something along the lines of “you know, that one chick who wrote that one book.” Sara replies, “I wrote that book.” The girl just about screamed. She had no idea she’ d been chatting for more than ten minutes with an author, especially an author that she had read and admired. And Sara had a good laugh over the word “chick.”

My embarrassing moment was when I thought I was emailing local Utah author Ann Dee Ellis but I was actually emailing another local Utah author Emily Wing Smith. When she emailed back very confused (I had even addressed her as Emily, but all of the particulars were about Ann Dee Ellis stuff), I was very confused. When I finally figured it out, I was so embarrassed. Thank goodness Emily is really cool and took it all in stride. I was a bit red in the face.

Anyways, the point? My question is this: have you ever had a “moment” whether in person or online with an author (or as an author with a reader) that you thought was embarrassing? Said something you shouldn’t have? Ever committed a faux paus? Know of someone who has? Fess up! I’m sure are some great stories out there and I want to hear them! And let’s hope that I don’t commit one at BookExpo America (BEA). And any guesses on the famous author in question above (without clicking or hovering on the links below)?

how can pregnancy occur with one right fallopian tube and 1 left ovary I have one ovary and fallopian tube on the right side, but because my doctor told me that it is possible for the egg to travel across the top of the uterus and into the other tube, we were going to remove my left tube. This is because I don’t have a complete uterus (only half). In my case, we were going to remove my left fallopian tube to reduce chances of an ectopic pregnancy. As always ask a doctor. My full story.

god works miracle for woman to have a baby after hysterectomy After doing some googling, I see that you can become pregnant and carry a baby in the abdomen. You do not have to have a uterus, but ideally, you don’t want to carry in the abdomen. Whether or not you could carry to term is another matter. I have no idea if it’s been done.

Personally, I’m thrilled! I enjoyed the movie Twilight (read my full thoughts here) but concede that it had some major problems. I was really worried what New Moon would look like if it continued with a limited budget and a director who couldn’t handle such a large fan-based film. This kind of reminds me of Harry Potter, which has gone through at least four directors. Each film got better than the last. So here’s hoping that New Moon will be even better!

Discussion question: Are you happy or not happy that Catherine Hardwicke will not be directing New Moon?

I just can’t help myself! It’s not as if giving away nineteen Stephenie Meyer books this year wasn’t enough, I’d like to give you more!! This is your chance to win the first three books of the Twilight series (sorry, doesn’t include Breaking Dawn). I recently saw Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse available secondhand and I knew one of you would like to have them. So I bought them just for you. Twilight is paperback, New Moon and Eclipse are hardback. The covers and dust jackets have seen a little wear but the inside pages are immaculate and look brand new. But who’s to complain? Either you’ve already read them a billion times from your neighbor but have yet to buy them or you’ve been feeling guilty that you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet.

Twilight, the movie, comes out Friday, the 21st. In other words TODAY! And I know many of you went to midnight showings. My husband and I (yes, he’s read ALL the books) are going tonight. Do you think he’ll be the only guy there? I’ll leave my comment here afterwards and include some of mine and his reactions. Tell me about the movie! Did you see it? Are you not seeing it? Did you like it? Did you hate it? Do you like the books even more? Did it ruin the books for you? Was it like you thought it would be? What was the crowd like? Who did you go with? Etc, etc.

Just leave me a comment for your chance to win! Multiple comments count as multiple entries. For example, if you subscribe to the post and like or didn’t like what somebody else said, then come on back for more! If I can tell that you are spreading out your thoughts amongst 10 comments I will throw them out. I’ll just have to make that call. We’re talking legit conversation here. Giveaway will end at midnight MST on November 30th. That will give you a week and a half to see the movie (or not see the movie – not attending doesn’t mean you can’t enter). By then, I’m sure some of you will have seen it more than once.

So go on ahead – give me your review!
