In the Garden by Peggy Collins (plus more of my garden photos!)

In the Garden (large)How could I not love In the Garden by Peggy Collins?  I LOVE gardening.  And please, nobody remind me that it’s June already and I haven’t planted my veggies yet.

In this adorable picture book, a little boy (to tell you the truth, the character could easily be interpreted as either a boy or a girl) has a huge garden.  Not only does he plant seeds but a truck, bus, and a bulldozer.  He waters everything and the rain and sun make the flowers and vegetables grow big.  Nothing is better than juicy green peas, tomatoes, strawberries, butterflies, bumblebees and kisses.  A fun book  that captures a child’s special point of view as he digs into the dirt and watches the world around him grow.

The illustrations are really awesome.  Bold, bright, and fun they are a delight to look at.  My two little boys have their own raised vegetable box that they can call their own.  Last year, they planted radishes. I’m going to read this book to my boys and then head outside to enjoy our own time in the beautiful garden.

This is an easy book to love!

You may remember the last time I posted photos of my garden.  Here’s how it’s looking now (well – about two weeks ago):

On the other side of the driveway (not seen here) I have a fairly large perennial garden.  When we moved in, we ripped out all the grass.  Wondering now why I don’t have a photo of it . . .

  1. Love the photos! I’m so jealous of your yard – I’ve never been very good at flowers. Zucchini on the other hand :)

  2. Yay for ripping out grass! Every year I have less of it…

  4. Melissa – Zucchini is my favorite garden vegetable. Send the extras my way!

Charlotte – Loved getting rid of that grass. Got rid of a 1/4 of it in the backyard as well. My rule: If you only walk on it to mow it, then rip it out!

Kathy – Thanks! I wouldn’t know what to do with Southern yards though.

  6. Are those chives in the second pic? Our plant gets cut back often for our food dishes and never has this many large pretty flowers.

  7. Since I write about women who work on the land, I enjoyed this post. It also reminded me that Alice Walker has a beautiful essay, “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens.” For many women of the past, the garden was the only work of art their culture allowed them. And they made the most of it.

  10. How pretty! Will you come to my house and do that in my yard? I hate gardening (I even kill the lucky bamboo in my house). I always admire people that do it. I was born with a brown thumb…oh that, and I’m allergic to just about everything! hehe!

Very pretty though! Looks like your blog is back up. I didn’t have any problems loading it!

  11. Oh Natasha–you’re flowers are absolutely gorgeous! We’re struggling here with ours. The heat is absolutely killing our flowers and with how high our water bill was last month due to our attempts at watering I’m just not sure we’ll make it through the hottest summer months yet to come. I guess I’ll just have to continue admiring yours! :)

  12. We got it from the library, and my (almost)4 year old boy LOVES it. Any time we read, he picks that one. He claims that the main character is a girl. He also claims that the trucks really did grow up into real trucks. I guess I’ll let him enjoy being a kid and stop insisting that trucks don’t grow.
