Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-Thon: It’s Long Over but How Did I Do?
Well, Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-thon is long over. I had a fantastic time. It was really hard to read with the kids but overall I think it went pretty well. Reading with a partner was fantastic and I think we had more fun eating our special treats than we did reading!
I do have one bone to pick. And that is, if you have a reading partner, explain well before the event starts that if one of you is to fall asleep, then WAKE THEM UP! Taylor swears that he tried to wake me up (but not to keep reading rather to move to the bed). But no, I fall asleep well before midnight (with 6am being the end time) on the couch and then wake up at 3am. I drag myself to bed where apparently my reading partner is comfortably sound asleep. I would let him defend himself but he can’t as he promptly took off to Las Vegas the very next day and I’m now waiting for him to arrive back home.
While downloading photos off of the camera today (for that middle of the night update which didn’t happen because I was ASLEEP), I found this photo:
That my friends is how I ended my 24-Hour Read-a-thon!
The Stats
- Books Finished: Frankie Pickle and the Pine Run 300 by Eric Wight, The Surrender Tree: Poems of Cuba’s Struggle for Freedom by Margarita Engle, Born on a Blue Day – Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant by Daniel Tammet, Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Clearly, A Fine White Dust by Cynthia Rylant
- Books Halfway Read (finished the next day – so I’m counting them in my charity count): The Beijing of Possibilities by Jonathan Tel, Mare’s War by Tanita Davis
- Total Books Read: 5
- Food Consumed: Fruit parfait, an AWESOME grilled cheese sandwich, veggies with spinach dip, Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, fruit, yogurt dip, nutella dip.
- Blogging, Visiting, Comments: I made it to 30 other participant blogs and updated on twitter. The readathon is all about the community. Thanks for all the comments I received!
- Total Time Read: Started at 6:45 am and fell asleep at about midnight. Between taking care of the kids, I probably only read for 12 hours.
- Reading for a Cure – We will be donating a set dollar amount for each page read during the Read-a-thon to the Huntsman’s Cancer Foundation in conjunction with Wendy at Caribousmon Reading for a Cure challenge. Frankly, I’ll figure this page count thing out in a bit.
Thanks to the great organizers, cheerleaders and supporters. I can’t wait to do it again!
The Husband (aka Taylor)
I really enjoyed this read-a-thon. Now that I have done that I want to do a write-a-thon, a game-a-thon and a movie-a-thon.
Next time I think we will get a babysitter and get a good sleep the night before. I think it would be interesting to actually read the whole time instead of read/watch the kids/clean up dishes, fall asleep etc.
- Books Finished: Arkham Asylum, Y the Last Man, and half of Unwind.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

Re Ramona: in case anybody here is involved in teaching/literacy work with adults, the Ramona books make an excellent “read this to your kids” recommendation to adults who may feel a little shaky in the reading department themselves.
on April 12th, 2010 at 11:12 pmThat pic is priceless. They should use that in the next Readathon buttons.
on April 12th, 2010 at 11:48 pmYou both did great! I went to bed after The Girl nudged me and told me I was snoring. LOL That was around 1 am, and it ended at 8 am.
on April 13th, 2010 at 5:26 amIt is an extra special challenge when there are kids around. Still, I think that the example we set for our kids (reading is fun!) is priceless, regardless of our productivity. My kids had a ball. I think I would have gotten more done had I not blogged as much, but this was my first time so live and learn! I love that picture! I know exactly how you felt!
on April 13th, 2010 at 6:35 amI fall asleep reading and apparently am impossible to wake up, so I know what this is like. lol At least, the guy claims he tried to wake me when I wake up on the couch and he is in the nice comfy bed! That’s a great picture. As long as you had fun, I think that is the important thing, right?
on April 13th, 2010 at 11:44 amI loved the picture! My husband thought I was crazy. He woke up and asked how long I would be typing because it was waking him up. I did my cheerleading to wake me up!
on April 13th, 2010 at 1:24 pmIt sounds like you had fun and that’s what really counts!
on April 13th, 2010 at 2:15 pmThis is too funny! Listen, I don’t ever last the entire time either, so whether you have someone there to wake you or not, sleep will call! LOL. It looks like you did quite a bit of great reading though.
on April 13th, 2010 at 4:27 pmI love that picture! Such dedication to fall asleep with book in hand!
Having two young ones myself (although yours are a bit younger than mine) I was able to get in quite a bit of reading by having them get excited about the event and read too. My daughter brought down book after book and sat and looked through them all, while my son read Harry Potter. They were both extremely excited about the event and grabbed their books before even eating breakfast. It definitely helped ease some of the stress/guilt I felt about reading all day.
on April 13th, 2010 at 7:14 pmThat picture was exactly how I felt at the end!
Sounds like you two did an amazing showing considering you have two little ones!
on April 13th, 2010 at 9:37 pmThat picture is priceless! I fell asleep in a similar position during the last read-a-thon, my glasses still on and everything.
on April 14th, 2010 at 3:45 pmHa ha that’s funny. Hope you’re well rested. I don’t have a reading partner but I specifically told my hubby (who is always up late) to wake me up if I fall asleep so I can decide if I want to sleep or read more.
on April 14th, 2010 at 4:48 pmLovely picture.
My reading partner forgot to wake me up at the start of the readathon. I woke up in a panic at 7:56 and he was calmly sitting in bed next to me. He claims he was going to wake me up at 8am (apparently under the impression that I require no time to, say, use the bathroom).
on April 15th, 2010 at 6:43 pmHA! Surprisingly, I stayed up until about 3am which was a big feat for me. Still, despite falling asleep earlier than you intended you did reall well. Congrats on a successful readathon.
