Dewey’s 24-Hour Read-a-Thon Update #2

readathoon

I’m reading today in Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon!

Went to bed last night way to late! I think I was too excited making the fruit dip which we shall consume later.  I felt completely dead when the alarm went off this morning and it took about a half hour to stop hitting the snooze button, turn on my computer, and find a book. Got a good hours reading in before the boys woke up and even then we all squished into our bed for an hour.

Not to much to report so far.  Kids are occupying themselves this morning pretty well (with a bit of help from the TV).  We’ll likely head out to the park later this afternoon.

And proof that I indeed did feed my children breakfast this morning:

  • ChallengesNicole’s mini-challenge is to share a passage where the characters describe what they are eating or when they are actually eating – write up a post with the book, author, your selected passage and a picture of one the dishes. In the book I’m currently reading, Born on a Blue Day, author Daniel Tammet is in Lithuania experiencing his first Christmas there.

salted herringThere were twelve different dishes on the table, all meatless (the number represents the twelve apostles).  They included salted herring, fish,, winter vegetable salad, boiled potatoes, sauerkraut, bread, cranberry pudding and poppy-seed milk.  . . . There was no particular order in which each dish had to be eaten but I was told that it was customary to at least sample each food.  Each symbolized  something important for the year ahead:  the bread, for example, represented sustenance for the coming months the potatoes humility.  My favorite was the poppy-seed milk  aguonu pienas in Lithuanian – served with small round balls of dough.  The milk is prepared by grinding the scalded poppy seeds and mixing them with water, sugar or honey, and nuts.

As I can’t find an image of poppy-seed milk, how about the salted herring?  (Image source  & credit)

The Husband (aka Taylor)

I am really happy, last night, I got past a difficult level on Prince of Persia that I had been stuck on for five years.  I am way behind the times, I know. My first read, Arkham Asylum, was a excellent choice.  It was another intriguing look inside the Batman Mythology. Despite its release date in 1989 (The same year Tim Burton’s Batman was released) it still holds its ground decades later after countless animated shows and movies.

  • Book Currently Reading:Unwind-A world where unwanted teens are salvaged for body parts.
  • Books Finished Since Last Update:Arkham Asylum-Demented, disturbing and unforgettable.  The full manuscript in the 15th anniversary edition adds more twisted layers.

  1. Wow, you guys are doing great. You have managed to read AND feed the kids? You are doing better than me at this point. My son is still wondering where breakfast is and it is almost 11AM here in California!
