In Which I Find Myself with a 24-Hour Read-a-thon Partner!
I was unable to participate in the 24-Hour Read-a-thon in the fall and so I’m really looking forward to setting time aside on April 10th for Dewey’s Read-a-thon. Read for 24 hours?! Crazy right? But you know that you are considering it right now and taking a peak at your calendar.
This year Taylor, my husband, is going to read as well! Last time I participated I think he just put up with it and tried to keep the kids occupied all day but now he is really excited. When I married Taylor he was NOT a reader so I love that this is something we can now do together. I really want to make this fun for the both of us. Ideas? The only catch is that we will both be trying to keep the kids occupied. And if we are both crazy enough to try it with a 4-year-old and 2-year-old in the house then I know you should give it a try as well!
Anybody can participate. You don’t need a book blog. A lot of the fun is in the community of it so definitely check out how people are doing, and join the chatter on Twitter. Make if a family event or get together with friends. You can find out everything that you need to know on the Dewey’s Read-a-Thon site.
As for us we plan on setting aside a stack of books that we’d like to tackle, make some snacks, most likely take a trip to the park in the afternoon, order in dinner, put in movies for the kids, and after the kids are in bed snuggle on the couch together where more than likely one of us will fall asleep. The worse part is that the kids don’t sleep in or take naps! So I’m sure there will be much bribing to see who is up with the kids the next day while we are dead on our feet. Sound fun?! Yep. I think so.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

I’m joining in the read-a-thon for the first time (we are in spring break so no sports events!!!). This time, my kids are going to be participating with me for as long as they can, even my non-reading son. I think it is awesome that you can share this event with your family. I look forward to hearing about how this goes with your boys!
on April 3rd, 2010 at 5:42 amGood luck!!!
on April 3rd, 2010 at 7:23 amMy husband wasn’t a reader either and now he reads too! Isn’t it so fun!! =)
on April 3rd, 2010 at 7:50 amHow fun, Natasha! and good luck!
I think you should set reading (or looking at picture books) goals for the boys, too.
on April 3rd, 2010 at 10:01 amBest of luck! This is my first time doing the read a thon so I am very excited! That’s great that you got your husband to join you
on April 3rd, 2010 at 11:01 amI wish my husband would participate with me!
My plan was originally to send MY 4 and 2 year old to grandma’s house during the day but we have a birthday party to attend. So I’ll read in the morning as best I can, then attend the party, then send the kids away if Grandma will still take them.
I’m also doing the Clutter Readathon every day next week.
on April 3rd, 2010 at 11:01 amIdea for the kids: hope for good weather and let them play outside for as many hours as possible! You and hubby can sit on lawn chairs enjoying books while they enjoy the great outdoors!
on April 3rd, 2010 at 11:23 amGood luck keeping the kids occupied while reading…maybe you should take turns reading to them…or reading with them as part of the read-a-thon.
on April 3rd, 2010 at 2:14 pmMy husband read with me in October and we had a lot of fun. We were also both reading Mysterious Benedict Society books to start out which made it interesting. It’s still unclear whether we will have visitors to entertain this year or not, but I’m hoping we will do it again sometime.
on April 3rd, 2010 at 4:23 pmI’m a readathon first-timer, so I’m really excited! I just hope I can stay awake! I wish my husband would join me . . .
on April 3rd, 2010 at 6:49 pmLucky you! I’m trying to find someone to join me for at least part of the RAT, since this is my first time reading, but I’m not sure if it’ll happen or not. I’m sure you guys will have a great time.
on April 3rd, 2010 at 7:00 pmI was going to suggest taking turns reading to the boys, too. Also, books on tape are great for taking a walk together if the weather cooperates. I hope it turns out to be a fun family day for all of you!
on April 3rd, 2010 at 7:08 pmI hope y’all have a great time!
on April 3rd, 2010 at 7:38 pmI am not doing the Read a thon as that’s the day of my kid’s birthday party. If you lived here I’d tell you to send your boys to me- we’re having a bouncy castle!
on April 4th, 2010 at 7:19 amI wish I could participate in the Readathon, but my husband and son would just say, “How is that any different than what you do every day?” lol
on April 4th, 2010 at 9:12 amThis should make it really fun for you all. I am looking forward to all the updates.
on April 4th, 2010 at 10:22 amThat’s so cool that you and your husband are both participating!
on April 4th, 2010 at 10:54 amthis will be my first readathon and i’m so excited!
that’s so cool that your hubby will be participating, too. i wish i could get my bf near a book, but no luck.
on April 4th, 2010 at 4:41 pmI didn’t realize it was coming up so soon. My 10 year old daughter really wants to participate in the next one so we’ll have to see if we can do it. I’m glad you and Taylor can participate together this time. How fun.
on April 4th, 2010 at 4:44 pmThat sounds wonderful!
on April 4th, 2010 at 9:22 pmSo much fun you’ll have a partner! We’ll be traveling for a family birthday party. I’m hoping Daniel will sleep in the car and I can sit in back with him and read while my husband and sister chat in the front, but once we get to my aunt’s house there won’t be any spare reading time I’m sure.
on April 4th, 2010 at 10:43 pmThat’s amazing that your husband is reading along with you! I usually get my kids to do some reading, so I’m not alone and it’s more fun. I should ask my husband and see if he’s interested! Have fun!
on April 5th, 2010 at 4:50 pmHave a great time! I bet you can’t wait until the kids are old enough to participate, too.
Since Serena’s hubby has to work, I’m hoping mine will join us, too. He’s not much of a reader, but he’s joined our book club and actually really enjoys it. Otherwise, he’ll be the lone hold-out in a house full of reading fiends. LOL
