National Poetry Month – In Which I Share Four Poems I Wrote When I Was Eight (despite how scary they are)

ntl-poetry-button_blueSerena at Savvy Verse and Wit is hosting a blog tour in honor of  National Poetry Month and I wondered if there was any way I could participate. I’m not one to sit down and read anthologies of poetry and in fact, there is nothing that I hated more than dissecting poems in high school. But yet, I LOVE free verse novels. Give me a book written in free verse and I’m apt to love it. And let’s not forget all the picture books which I read to my boys which are often written in poetry.

But then I remembered that buried deep in my journal are four poems that I wrote when I was eight years old. Yes, EIGHT. And sadly, the only four poems which I believe I have ever written. I could only remember that one was about a witch (it was around Halloween time). So I dug them out to share with you.  All seemed rather tame until I got to the last one . . .

My Cat Wondered:

I Saw a Ghost:

I don’t know about you but that was some talent I had back then! *wondering if I still have the magic touch*

  1. Thanks so much for participating. I loved these poems. I was writing something similar ages ago!

  2. Wow, so what in the world was going on in that last poem?

  5. So cute! What a poet you were (and probably are, if you try it again)! :)

  6. Impressive. I’ve positive that my poems at eight were not as emotion filled. I probably would have written about My Little Ponies or something else lame. Nothing as cool as pointy hats!

  7. That is why I never wear a pointy hat! Too many black eyes. LOL

My daughter is a teenager and writes the most depressing poems. Her writing teacher asked if everything was okay at home. It is. She just says her lighthearted poems are stupid and her sad ones are good. The thing is they usually are. Before I knew that though I thought I had a completely depressed child on my hands.

  8. You certainly had imagination and passion! It was generous of you to share that with us.

  9. Your poems cracked me up. I’m jealous that you have them. What a fun treasure from your childhood. Now I know why I have totes full of my kid’s school stuff.

    Thanks for sharing.

  10. I don’t know what I love more, getting a black eye from a pointy hat or telling a ghost scat!

I think you should write more, you clearly have a gift.

  11. Serena sent me your link to post at Win a Book. I’m glad she did; I might have missed it otherwise in this age of overload.

These were too precious to miss. Thanks for being brave enough to post them!

  14. Those are awesome. I learned for the first time about the “triolet” form at Greg K.’s first day of 30 Poets in 30 Days, and I think your first one is that.

I was actually contemplating writing a poem this month.

  15. Not bad for eight years old :-) . I like the last one best, I think! Lots of emotions there!

  16. POINTY HATS!! hehe. I loved your poems! Thanks for sharing. :-)

  17. I love this post. And your childhood poems have such spirit. Ghosts can NOT eat your apple! Also, I love the emphatic outrage about the dangerous fashion disaster that is the pointy hat.

  18. I loved these! Reminds me of the first poem I wrote in 5th grade. I don’t have it written anywhere any more, but I remember it clearly. I better write it down, though, so I don’t forget it as I age.

I loved the poems and that you decided to post them exactly as you had them, with words crossed out and in your own handwriting :)
