Library Loot!
I’m going to try to do these library loot posts every other week as I normally have books checked out for three weeks at a time. I go to the library so often that I could do one of these posts three times a week!
Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Eva from A Striped Armchair and Marg from Reading Adventures that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library.
.
Fiction
- Little Bee by Chris Cleave. I’ve had this one on my radar for a long tim. Author is coming to the Kings English soon and my book club is reading this one!
- Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas. Also a book club book about which I’m really nervous. I must admit I’ve never checked out a book that had the little heart sticker on the spine. New genre for me!
Non-Fiction
- Kid’s Favorites Made-Healthy – I’ve never reviewed a cookbook before but I’ve made three recipes from this one and I liked them all. Should I review it?
- The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination & Nurture Family Connections by Amanda Blake Soule. Excited to look through this one.
Young Adult Fiction
- After Tupac & D Foster by Jacqueline Woodson. Finished this one already and LOVED it.
- Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers
- The Book of Jude by Kimberley Heuston
Middle Grade Fiction
- When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr
- The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
Picture Books
- Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice by Steve Metzer, Illustrated by Laura Bryant. I always get books on CD for the car and we haven’t tried this one yet.
- Bad Rats by Eric Drachman, illustrated by James Muscarello. I liked the illustrations in this one so brought it home. I’m glad I read it before sitting down with the boys because I won’t be reading it to them. Although the ultimate message in Bad Rats is about how the rats individual traits should be celebrated, there was to much name calling before you got there.
- One Little Seed by Elaine Greenstein. My little boy is fascinated with seeds. He LOVED this book.
- Snow by Uri Shulevitz. My little guy loved counting the snow flakes on each page until there got to be too many. He loves it when it snows so I knew this would be a hit.
- A Book of Sleep by Il Sung Na. An adorable book. They loved pointing out the owl on each page as he watched over all the other sleeping animals.
- Wolves by Emily Gravett. Such a fun book! But my four year old didn’t really understand what happened to the rabbit at the end.
- Seven Miles to Freedom : the Robert Smalls Story by Janet Halfmann. I’ll be spotlighting this book in February.
- Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears by Emily Gravett. I’ve seen this book before but wanted to introduce my kids to it. Even though I wondered if I’d be giving them ideas of things to be scared about. A very creative fun book. Kiddos declared they liked it when we read it.
- Monster Sleepover! by Scott Beck. My kids are really into monsters right now. We haven’t read this one together yet, but we will.
Media
- Tall as a Tree CD
- What’s new Scooby-Doo? Vol. 04, Merry Scary Holiday DVD
- Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster DVD
- Faith, Hope & Lullabies: Peaceful Music for Quiet Moments CD
Husband
- Clockwork, Or All Wound Up by Philip Pullman
- Uglies by Steve Westerfield. Even though I own this book, my MIL took it home with her over the holidays and then my husbands book club decided to read it. Him and his mother both read it at the same time. I’m thinking I should have done the same thing as I haven’t read the series yet.
Still checked out but still unread from my last library loot post:
- The Calligrapher’s Daughter by Kim Eugenia.
- Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.
- The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million by Daniel Mendelsohn.
- The Zookeeper’s Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman.
- Clara’s War: One Girl’s Story of Survival by Clara Kramer.
- Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford.
- Heart of a Shepherd by Rosanne Parry.
- Operation Yes by Sara Holmes.
- Just Another Hero by Sharon Draper.
- The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon.
- How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford.
- Into the Wild Nerd Yonder by Julie Halpern.
Returned to the library unread from my last library loot post:
- Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. I had wanted to read this one when I realized that she was coming to my town for an author signing. But there ended up being a cost for attending so I decided to not stress myself out over this one. Back it went.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

I just went and signed up at my Library after procrastinating since November! You earlier LL post inspired me. I got 5 books, and my daughter got some great African Folklore picture books!
on January 28th, 2010 at 2:53 pmYou really are quite the library user. The Zookeeper’s Wife was one I enjoyed immensely, it reads as easily as fiction but it’s entirely true. I reviewed Little Bee, which I also really liked. You have some good reading there. Enjoy.
on January 28th, 2010 at 3:31 pmI just started this meme myself. I like the way you’ve formatted yours. Don’t be surprised if I copy your style.
on January 28th, 2010 at 3:35 pmWow I love the Little Bee cover! If only the SF Library system would be up to par. People here never return them and then the funding is never there enough to buy them again to replace them. I’ll just live vicariously through you!
on January 28th, 2010 at 4:17 pmFor once, I have one of those picture books! In fact, I just read Snow to my AP students the other day. We’ve been doing poetry, and I wanted them to see how poetic language can be delivered in lots of different forms. It’s a cute little book, so I hope you and your boys enjoy it!
on January 28th, 2010 at 4:33 pmI’m kind of worried about Devil in Winter too!
on January 28th, 2010 at 6:10 pmI loved When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit when I was in middle school. It seems like it would be right up your alley.
on January 28th, 2010 at 7:05 pmI got both Little Bee and the Devil in Winter too. I wonder why we did that?
on January 28th, 2010 at 7:56 pmI love libraries! Thanks for sharing. You picked up some super books.
on January 28th, 2010 at 9:55 pmI keep meaning to read the Creative Family too! I’ll be curious to see what you think of it, if you review it. Nice running into you today. Sorry we had to dash off – I needed to get home to babysit a friend’s son.
on January 28th, 2010 at 10:47 pmI also have books out for three weeks at time. I’ve decided to post about the books due in the next week.
on January 29th, 2010 at 12:00 amOoh! I love A Book of Sleep. I saw it featured on a blog and had to buy it for myself
on January 29th, 2010 at 3:03 amLittle Bee is amazing. I must get Creative Family one of these days too.
on January 29th, 2010 at 6:58 amYou have several checked out that I want to read as well. I currently only have one checked out from the library as we are in Florida now until Feb 9 and I am really trying to avoid those late fees!
on January 29th, 2010 at 1:02 pmDevil in Winter is a pretty good choice as an introduction to historical romance, although you do miss out on some of the character growth of Sebastian as he was portrayed in the earlier books in the series! Will be interested to hear what a non-romance reader thinks of it. I do find it a very interesting choice for a non-romance focussed book club to choose!
Hope you enjoy all your loot.
on January 30th, 2010 at 5:15 amI completely agree regarding Bad Rats! We had a very similar experience, and I wished I had skimmed it a little more closely before checking it out from the library. My daughters loved both Wolves and Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears.
on January 30th, 2010 at 12:34 pmMy kids enjoyed some of the recipes from Kids favorites made healthy.
on January 30th, 2010 at 5:43 pmWow! What a haul! and yes, please review the cookbook. As a compulsive cookbook buyer it’s good to know which ones are worth the money.
on January 31st, 2010 at 8:05 amOh! You will love The Creative Family! I bought this right after it came out and it has some really great ideas. She also has another one that just came out and I really want to pick it up too.
The Monster Sleepover looks great for my Turkeybird. I can’t wait to hear what you guys think of it!
on January 31st, 2010 at 10:18 pmOooh Devil in Winter is a great introduction to historical romance, and Kleypas in general. It’s part of a series, but it’s not a series where you’ll be confused without having read the first two.
I loved The Creative Family, probably more than her second book.
My boys are WAY into Scooby Doo right now. I’m a bit burnt out myself.
on February 1st, 2010 at 12:55 pmI have heard GREAT things about Little Bee. And I was incredibly motivated by The CREATIVE FAMILY. Hope you like it too!
on February 1st, 2010 at 2:47 pmWow! What a haul!
on February 3rd, 2010 at 11:54 pmI’m curious what you think about The Zookeeper’s Wife. I’ve heard good things from a few people on that one. I have Seven Miles to Freedom and really enjoy it. Hope you like that one too!
