My First Library Loot!
Well, it’s a new year. And what better way to celebrate a new year by participating in my very first meme: Library Loot! Long time readers may already realize this but I am not a meme person. But I have to admit that I have always wanted to share my library books with you.
Mainly because I don’t get half of them read in the first place but the book was intriguing enough for me to pick it up. I have books coming in and out of my life that will never get the slightest mention here on the blog. And I wanted to figure out a way to share with you all of the picture books that we get for the boys without necessarily reviewing ALL of them.
I am a huge library user. We got at least twice a week and my boys are such regulars at the library that they know where the candy drawer is and which librarian needs to be on shift for them to get away with raiding it.
So my very first library loot! Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Eva from A Striped Armchair and Marg from Reading Adventures that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library.
Not sure what format I’ll settle into for these Library Loot posts but let’s try this way this week:
Fiction
- The Calligrapher’s Daughter by Kim Eugenia. I’ve checked this one out before but had to return it before I could get to it. Here’s hoping this time will be different.
- Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger. Niffengegger is coming on book tour at the Kings English Bookshop and I’d like to go see her if I can.
- Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. Another one that I’ve seen everywhere. It’s a Beehive Book Awards book so I picked up.
Non-Fiction
- The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million by Daniel Mendelsohn. Reading this one for Amy’s Book of Our Times.
- The Zookeeper’s Wife: A War Story by Diane Ackerman. Another one that I’ve checked out before but keeps getting returned.
- Clara’s War: One Girl’s Story of Survival by Clara Kramer. A memoir about the Nazi Holocaust. Couldn’t pass it up when I saw it somewhere.
- My Bridges of Hope: Searching for Life and Love After Auschwitz by by Livia Bitton-Jackson. The sequel to the memoir I Have Lived a Thousand Years which I read last year. I’ve already finished this one and I liked it a lot.
Young Adult Fiction
- How to Say Goodbye in Robot by Natalie Standiford. A Cybils finalist.
- Into the Wild Nerd Yonder by Julie Halpern. A Cybils finalist.
Middle Grade Fiction
- The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies and Other Warped and Creepy Tales by David Lubar. I was asked to help review and score some books for shortlist consideration for a book award. I have no idea if I can talk about them or not. So this is me not telling you what the name of the award is.
- Binky the Space Cat by Ashley Spires. Same as above. I giggled through this whole thing.
- Brendan Buckley’s Universe and Everything in It by Sundee Tucker Frazier. Same as above.
- Slob by Ellen Potter. Same as above. Great book. I liked it.
- All the Broken Pieces: A Novel in Verse by Ann E. Burg. A Cybils finalist. I stayed up late last night and read this in one sitting.
- Captain Nobody by Dean Pitchford. A Cybils finalist.
- Heart of a Shepherd by Rosanne Parry. A Cybils finalist. I started this one this morning. So far so good.
- Operation Yes by Sara Holmes. A Cybils finalist.
- Just Another Hero by Sharon Draper. Did you know that the NAACP Image Awards have a literature category? Neither did I. But this one was on it.
- The Rock and the River by Kekla Magoon. Also a NAACP Image Award finalist and one that I had already seen everywhere.
Picture Books
Normally, I would have much more than just one picture book checked out. After the Cybils influx of books and our Christmas picture books we were a bit burned out last time we went to the library.
- Our Children Can Soar: A Celebration of Rosa, Barack, and the Pioneers of Change by Michelle Cook. Found this one through the NAACP Image Awards and looks perfect for a review in February when I read books for Black History Month.
Media
My little boy was sick all weekend. Take a look at this list and take a wild guess whether it was Mommy or Daddy that went to the library for videos.
- War Child by Emmanuel Jal CD. I can’t stop listening to this after reading Jal’s book of the same name. We’re talking about this one next week for the That’s How I Blog Radio Show.
- White Christmas movie
- He-Man and the Master of the Universe
- Mulan II
- The Muppet Show, Season 2
- The Neverending Story (the first really low budget one)
- The Spectacular Spider-Man
- Thundercats Season 2
- Veggie Tales: Heroes of the Bible
- Wallace & Gromit: A Matter of Load and Death
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

LOL-That list looks exactly like what my husband brings home-and we don’t have kids to bring them home to!:) I’d never watched Thundercats, but my husband loved it as a kid-same with He-Man, so I’ve been taught about the great cartoons I missed out on in the 80’s.
And I loved Into the Wild Nerd Yonder-hope you like it!
on January 13th, 2010 at 11:35 amWow, that’s a lot of loot!
on January 13th, 2010 at 11:54 amOMG! Thundercats! Snarf =^.^= And my brother was a big He-Man fan. I liked Orco and Teela from it and we’d play with his He-man action figures and castle Grayskull… lol.
I read (and loved) Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet last year, so I think you’re in for a treat on that one. One of these days I’ll actually get my Zookeeper’s Wife read, I’ve heard good things about it.
Enjoy all your goodies
on January 13th, 2010 at 11:55 amWow! What a collection of books! I was just at the library (trying to get back into the habit) and picked up three books.
on January 13th, 2010 at 12:47 pmYou have nearly the entire MG Cybils shortlist there! Hope you get around to some of them (and enjoy them, too…).
on January 13th, 2010 at 12:52 pmInto the Wild Nerd Yonder was absolutely one of my FAVORITE books of the year. Probably in part because I spent my college years playing D&D and other role playing games, so there was some nostalgia, but also I think it’s a genuinely funny book. It also has great family relationships.
I just read The Rock and the River and thought it was very interesting – I knew almost nothing about the Black Panthers before I started to read it.
on January 13th, 2010 at 1:28 pmWOW! and I thought I was a huge reader…you’ve blown me away by your list. I’m way, way impressed. I can’t wait to hear your comments about Hotel on the Corner of Bitter & Sweet. I keep looking at it, but then another one of my favorite authors comes out with his/her latest book and I pass it up. Happy Reading!
on January 13th, 2010 at 1:28 pmI read All The Broken Pieces a few months ago and like you did it in one sitting. An excellent book. Adding at least 3 books to my own library list now.
on January 13th, 2010 at 1:47 pmWow! So many wonderful books. You may even have more Library loot than Eva – and that’s rare!
on January 13th, 2010 at 2:55 pmYou have truly looted the library…LOL. Hotel On The Corner Of Bitter and Sweet is the book we chose for our February book club read.
on January 13th, 2010 at 5:11 pmI loved The Rock and the River. In fact I’ve given it as a gift to several teenage friends and they’ve loved it, also. So, save that book for when you need a treat!
on January 13th, 2010 at 5:37 pmI’ve read quite a few of your MG picks as I try to figure out this year’s Newbery. Great haul! I also enjoyed How to Say Goodbye in Robot.
I bet The Rock and The River goes for a Printz or Coretta Scott King…look forward to your thoughts on this one.
on January 13th, 2010 at 6:52 pmReally been meaning to read all three of your fiction choices. I moved in November and haven’t even been to the library yet. I am horrible.
on January 13th, 2010 at 6:55 pmWow, that’s quite a haul! I adore Blinky the Space Cat. Hope you enjoy it too!
on January 13th, 2010 at 8:24 pmWow! That is a lot of books. You know, I have never gone home from the library with more than 4 books.
on January 13th, 2010 at 8:42 pmSarah – My husband is training our kids to like all the same shows he liked when he was little. So far it’s working!
Kathy – Not compared to what I normally have out. No picture books this time!
Kool-Aid Mom – LOL My kids are watching He-Man right now!
Laurel Rain Snow – I never went to the library until I had kids. They’ve gotten me into the habit of going.
Melissa – And what I don’t have from the MG Cybils list is on hold or I’d already read it! Can’t wait to read them all.
Angela – Well, now I’m looking forward to readng both of them. I don’t know anything about the Black Panthers either.
Stacy – I’ve seen reviews for Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet for such a long time. And I keep passing it up.
Jeanette – I can’t wait to review All the Broken Pieces. I love a good free verse novel and it was excellent.
FluerFisher – LOL I’ve been known to max mine and my husband’s cards out at 60 items. But that’s when the kids go with me and we get lots of picture books and videos.
Sheila – I can’t wait to see if it makes for a good book club read.
Jean – Oh, now I’m more excited to read The Rock and the River after your high recommendation.
The Brain Lair – I wish I had read more new release MG this year then what I did. I can’t wait for all of the award announcements.
Pam – Go!
Erin – I already got Blinky the Space Cat read. I giggled through the whole thing.
on January 13th, 2010 at 8:42 pmWe have some of the same books out
Anyway, you’ve got some great books. I just love, love, loved All the Broken Pieces and Heart of a Shepherd. And Binky the Space Cat. That one was just *way* too much fun.
on January 13th, 2010 at 9:28 pmI will be interested to see what you think of The Zookeepers wife and Clara’s war. I could NOT get into either of them. I had heard such good things about both?? I even suggested Clara’s War for our book club and only 1 person finished it. Hope you have better luck
on January 13th, 2010 at 10:09 pmThanks for the great weekend-I really enjoyed The Zookeeper’s Wife.
on January 14th, 2010 at 12:08 amBecky – I’ve finished both of them and they were both excellent! I particularly enjoyed All the Broken Pieces.
Laura H. – Oh no! That’s not good. I’m not even sure where I heard about Clara’s War to tell you the truth. It got on my radar somehow.
Esme – I’m glad you had so much fun with Bloggiesta1
on January 14th, 2010 at 12:39 amYou’ve inspired me to participate for the first time too.
on January 14th, 2010 at 12:40 amI really enjoyed Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet when I read it last year. And I want to read Her Fearful Symmetry – I hope it’s good and you get to go see the author!
I’m pretty sure my husband intends to indoctrinate all future children in loving his favorite kid’s TV shows. I’ve seen very few of the ones he loved because I’m 4 years younger than him and a lot of the British shows never made it over to the US, so he gets annoyed that either I don’t know them or don’t like them when I watch them. I think he wants to fix this with any kids we have. :p
on January 14th, 2010 at 4:01 amWelcome to Library Loot!
I have Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet here to read in the next week or so, and I read Her Fearful Symmetry a couple of months ago!
on January 14th, 2010 at 5:40 amI love seeing library loot so i’m glad you’re joining in! Great books.
on January 14th, 2010 at 6:16 amThat’s a lot of loot! Glad to see you are keeping your library busy. Can’t wait to hear what you think of it all!
on January 14th, 2010 at 9:49 pmWhat a great list of library loot! Those first three titles look so pretty together. I’ve seen Her Fearful Symmetry around quite a bit. I hope you enjoy it.
We love Wallace and Grommit! “Creature Comforts” is my favorite, but it’s only a short. I’m not even sure you can find it on its own dvd. Will have to look into that.
on January 15th, 2010 at 12:56 pmWow! I’m impressed! That’s a LOT of books! Have fun!
I also picked Her Fearful Symmetry this week and am curious to know how it turns out.
on January 17th, 2010 at 11:42 amGlad to have you participating in Library Loot! We have similar tastes, so I’ll be eager to see what loot you have from your library visits. And, like you, I won’t get half of my books read – but I like Library Loot because it is a reminder of those that I, sadly, had to return.
on January 17th, 2010 at 1:31 pmWe’re so like your hubbie, our daughter has dvd copies of our childhood favourites too – Mr Ben and Bagpuss.
on January 18th, 2010 at 3:38 pmIt’s great to discover library loot – we try to go to storytime in our library every week and usually our entire loot is made up of picture books! (While Mummy is trying to get through a big pile of Amazon books she got on her birthday last year)
