What I’ll Be Doing Instead of the 24-Hour Read-a-Thon

readathonWhat are you doing two weeks from today?  Saturday, October 24th?

May I suggest . . . THE 24-HOUR READ-A-THON!!!

Regardless of whether or not you’re a blogger or not, the 24 Hour Read-a-Thon is simply so much fun!  Only requirement:  read!

I participated in my first 24-Hour Read-a-thon this past April and had A BLAST!  I eagerly put the date on the calender as soon as it was scheduled.  Imagine my dismay as soon as everything else got added to the 24th.  Let me share with you what is currently on the calender and thus rendering me unable to participate  (and there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth):

  • Boo at the Zoo
  • City’s Trunk or Treat/costume contest
  • Trunk or Treat Halloween party at the church
  • Adults only Halloween party in the evening
  • EDITED TO ADD:  The Salt Lake Book Festival!! Why, oh why does it have to be same day?
  • . . . and on top of that my sister-in-law and her husband are both flying in to visit from Hawaii.  One day only.

If you know anything about my husband it is the following fact:

He has become obsessed with Halloween costumes.  We hit up every costume contest we can find and he wins them all every year.  He’s been planning our costumes this year for months.  So sadly, the 24th around here will not be spent participating in the 24-Hour Read-a-thon but rather waking early in the morning, getting dressed (an event unto itself) and spending the entire day hopping from one Halloween party to the next (with in-laws in tow – Taylor has threatened that must bring costumes).  It’s one of the most highly anticipated days of the year (and it’s not even technically Halloween!).

If I recall, the same thing happened last October with the Read-a-Thon.  And I suspect that this might be the trend for each fall.   Thank goodness, it’s twice a year.  I’m thinking that I’ll sign up to host a challenge during the Read-a-Thon.  And I enjoyed posting a few recipes during last year’s Read-a-Thon, so we’ll see if I can swing that again.  So while I won’t be around to cheer anybody on (although I’m sure I’ll sneak in a look at Twitter – #readathon hashtag – at least a couple of times), I hope to be able to still participate somehow.

SO.  If your day isn’t as hectic as mine, clear your calender, go sign up, stack your books, hit the grocery store (and pick up ingredients for the yummy sandwich and smoothie I made during the last Read-a-Thon), get plenty of sleep the day before and have fun reading!!

Me?  I’ll be crying tears of sadness that I can’t participate.  Wait.  No crying.  My husband would kill me if I ruined the face makeup he’s got planned for me.

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. Sounds like a lot of fun! So what is trunk or treat? I havent heard of that. :)

  2. Sheila – A trunk-or-treat is where cars line up with their trunks open. People decorate them and kids go from car to car and trick-or-treat. It’s an easy way to trick-or-treat at parties or large community events.

  4. Sad. See, for me it’s good that it got bumped back a week, because if it was on the same week as last year, (which would be next week) I’d be off having an escape weekend for Fall Break with my family. So finally, I get to participate for the first time. I will have some stuff to work around, but for some reason, there are no Halloween actities that day that we have to go to.

I’ll look forward to pictures of all of you in costume again. Amazing stuff.

  5. I’m not going to participate in the read-a-thon either. :( I actually was planning on it, but then found out on Thursday that I’m going on a spur of the moment business trip that week, and I’ll be working on Saturday and Sunday during the trip.

I do hope that you share pictures of your family’s Halloween costumes with us, though!

  6. Sounds like you’ve got a busy/fun day planned.

This will be my first read-a-thon. I ran into the spring one on Twitter, and it seemed like such a great idea. I’ve been looking forward to it ever since.

I’m not sure my family thinks it is such a good idea, though :-) .

  7. Have fun at all of your parties! Maybe you can read 24 hours another weekend and then all of the rest of us will be free to cheer you on!

  8. Yes, I recall your stories about the costumes! Well, I spaced it on the last read-a-thon, and swore I’d be in the game for this one. Then, after getting reacquainted with high school girlfriends at FB, we planned a girls only cruise. Guess when it is? Yep, you got it. I wouldn’t trade this trip for anything in the world. I can’t even remember the last time I went anywhere without at least my husband. But why did these two events have to overlap? I’m so disappointed! In addition, there was a retreat I really wanted to attend, and it was also at the same time. My schedule is chaos! Maybe in the spring…

  9. My day is looking nearly as insane as yours…. though I think we’re bailing on Boo at the Zoo last year. Our pass has expired and it was sooooooooooooooo crowded last year.

My preschooler is obsessed with Halloween, so this time of year is a little crazy!

  10. You will definitely be missed. I hope that you will be able to at least stop in and cheer before the night is over.

And I fully expect photos of your terrific costumes!

  11. Oh bummer!! This is my first read-a-thon and am sure hoping the kids will cooperate since my hubby is working all weekend!! I’m actually planning on bribing my older one with a few prizes for himself if he reads with me. Is that bad?!?! :)

Enjoy your Halloween festivities!! Can’t wait to see pics!!

  12. I signed up for my first readathon and I’m looking forward to it.
My husband is obsessed with Halloween parties and costumes but it’s the same thing every year. He wants to have a Halloween Party and announces it and then looks at me. I said you want it, you plan it. This started 4 years ago – no party yet! LOL

Halloween sounds like a lot of fun at your house!

  13. I’m just the tiniest bit jealous of your costume craziness. I never manage to pull anything together anymore. Looking forward to the photos!

I signed up and then realized that it will be a very full weekend, since most of my family will be in town. Perhaps I will just have very small goals.

  14. I can’t wait to see how you dress up! My schedule was crazy like that on the last read-a-thon day. This is my first time participating, and I was so happy to have the day free.

    on October 10th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
  15. That’s too bad you won’t be able to participate in the read-a-thon this time around, but it sounds like you are going to have a fun day anyways!

    on October 11th, 2009 at 10:08 am
  16. I wouldn’t have time to read either, so I signed up to cheerlead :)

    on October 11th, 2009 at 10:14 am
  17. Salt Lake Book Festival!?! Sigh. We’ll see what I can and can’t do on that day. Right now, I’m signed up for it, but as always, I’ll take it an hour at a time!

    on October 11th, 2009 at 11:23 am
  18. May I suggest listening to an audiobook? If you do it w/ an ipod, and only use one earbud, maybe nobody will notice. Perhaps you could even work it into your costume?

The Seattle Book Festival is that weekend, too, but I think I’ll go on Sunday.

  19. Sounds very fun! Thanks for this post, or I may not have found out about it. I think I will sign up tomorrow. :D

  20. Trunk or Treat sounds awesome! We always have a Harvest Festival to go to. I love dressing up for Halloween. We can’t do it this year, but it’s all good. I hope you have a wonderful time! :)

  21. I don’t know why I had it in my head that the readathon was next weekend – I was sad that I wasn’t going to be able to participate because of Kidlitcon. But then I found out this weekend that I’m just not that attentive and it’s actually the weekend after that so I’m totally good to go!

You’ll be missed, but you have so much fun planned!

  22. I haven’t decided if I’m going to sign up or in what capacity, but sounds like your husband and my husband have something in common. Halloween is like his Christmas and he loves costumes. He hasn’t roped me into dressing up yet, though…at least not how he wants me to–this year, I do have an idea for a costume…I might be Atomico from Into the Beautiful North….if I can come up with a costume, I’ll post pictures.

    on October 14th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
  23. We got the kids and the husbands pics in costume last year…do we get to see what he has dressed you up in this year?!

    on October 16th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
  24. Booooooo! :( I’m so sad you won’t be able to participate but hopefully you can throw together a little mini-challenge.

I feel so awful about last weekend. I need to plan a nice long trip where I’ll be in town for longer than 36 hours (and have a definite plane ticket!). :(

    on October 17th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
  25. Don’t worry Trish about last weekend. One of these days it will work out.

    Reminds me . . . I actually haven’t signed up for a mini-challenge. LOL

Jenn M. – Yep, I’ll post pictures this year of ALL of us. Myself included.

    on October 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
  26. I have a lot of these same types of commitments. It’s definitely a tough day! I’m going to try to cheerlead a bit during naptime and after the little guy goes to sleep.

    on October 20th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
  27. Oh, and I’m hosting a mini challenge at night :)
