Nobel Prize in Literature for 2009 Goes to . . .

mullerHerta Muller, a German, has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Literature for “who, with the concentration of poetry and the frankness of prose, depicts the landscape of the dispossessed”  Visit the Nobel Prize site for a full bio and bibliography.

I have not read anything by Muller and, even more embarrassing, am not familiar with this author at all.  I said the same thing last year.  I guess I’m not very well read.  What about you?  Have you read anything by Herta Muller?

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. No! I have not heard one thing about her. You’d think, as much as we read, that we would have. I’m hanging my head in shame. Maybe someone else has?

  2. Well, in all our defense– she’s German-speaking Romanian and only has a few works in English.

I’ll bet if they picked an author from the US we’d have heard of him/her.

    :D

If my German weren’t quickly fading into nonexistent, I’d pick up some of her German stuff.

  3. That would be “nonexistence”.

    Must proofread BEFORE hitting “submit”….

  4. I’m not familiar with Müller either, but the descriptions I’ve read make me interested in reading her work!

  5. Nope, haven’t heard of her. Or the 2008 guy. Oh well. :)

I’m waffling about this weekend. I’m starting to feel sick (Scott’s been sick all week) and I don’t want to risk transferring sickness to my grandma. Hopefully it’s nothing. I’ll let you know–sorry about the late notice. :(

  6. No, I have never heard of her and I am from Italy, a little closer to Romania and Germany than the US. The Nobel Prize judges are really choosing writers who are scarcely known outside their countries. Even in Italian her books are not translated, apart from one which is available on the internet and a collection of short stories which is unfortunately out of print.

  7. I have never heard of her either. But that’s not saying a lot, I’m not very well versed in German literature.

  8. No I haven’t read anything by this author. I’m not sure I have even heard of her until after she won.
