Book to Movie Trailers – Upcoming Releases I’m Excited About
Although I rarely talk about them on my blog, I love watching movies! Ever since having kids, it’s near impossible to actually see a new release in the theater, although I may not be there on opening night, there are a ton of movies coming out this summer and fall that are based on some fantastic books.
Although it’s already come out, I can’t help but mention Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! I loved it! As long as one doesn’t nitpick it with the book, it was the best of the entire series. I wish there was a huge battle at the end but like I said, nitpicking . . . . So good!
Another one that is already out but deserves mention, My Sister’s Keeper. I heard Jodi Picoult talk about her reaction to the movie when she came to Salt Lake City including her feelings about changing the end of the movie from the book. This book has been in my house forever and I refuse to watch the movie until I read the book.
Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. I haven’t read the book but the movie trailer really makes me want to. It just came out yesterday.
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I have had this book on my shelf for probably a year and a half with good intentions to read it. Here’s hoping the movie release will push it to the top of the TBR. Releases August 14, 2009.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. My husband claims he never knew this upcoming movie was a book. To which I’m incredulous. Everybody knows about this book. Right? If not, shame. Looks good and releases September 18, 2009.
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. Who doesn’t love this book? Like many of us, I grew up with Where the Wild Things Are and have more than one copy in the house. Maurice Sendak couldn’t be more pleased with the film, so now I’m even more excited. Husband is also really excited. He saw seven movies of the film at Comic-Con and he said it was amazing. Releases October 16, 2009. Movie site.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I had no idea that this was being made into a movie but man, it looks fantastic! Releases October 16, 2009.
Fantastic Mr. Fox by Road Dahl. I read and reviewed Fantastic Mr. Fox when my book club had a book to movie theme month. I can’t wait to see this movie! Comes out November 13, 2009 and features George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and a billion more.
New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. Need I say more? Many will be fighting the crowds to see this one on November 20th. I must admit that I’m a bit disappointed that they still didn’t throw money into the special effects. We shall see . . .
The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. SO looking forward to this movie!!!! I read the book pre-blog when it was first released. So good. Releases December 11, 2009.
Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross. The movie trailer isn’t officially released to the public yet but in a phone chat with Donna during our book club, she gave us a secret link and trust me, you want to see this movie. In a recent press release that I received from Donna she needs readers help to make sure that the movie makes it to a movie theater near you. PLEASE read this statement from Donna and then make your voice heard. In addition, you have a couple more weeks to purchase the book and get your name entered to be flown to the movie premiere. Details on that.
Alice in Wonderland!!!! I got all giddy when I watched the trailer for Alice in Wonderland simply because it makes me excited for my husband. He’s almost crazy with anticipation. The book holds a special place in my husband’s heart as he has probably collected at least a dozen different versions of the story and he’s done multiple sketches of the characters. Plus putting Johnny Depp and Tim Burton into the mix and he’s just beside himself. He’s refused to watch the trailer. He was at Comi-Con and was super bummed not to get into their panel. It’s going to be a long wait until March 5, 2010.
So what movie based on a book are you most excited about watching this summer and fall? Did I miss any? Let me know in the comments and I’ll include the trailer in the comments.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

So many I want to see! Especially Time Traveler’s Wife, Where the Wild Things Are, Fantastic Mr. Fox… I’ve seen so many movie adaptions of Alice in Wonderland I’m not as antsy to see that one, but still want to!
on August 8th, 2009 at 6:36 amI know, I’ve had TTW on my bookshelf since spring, and still haven’t touched it. And I really don’t want to see the movie before I read it. I lead such a tortured life! I am wondering if I can persuade my kids to sit through Julie and Julia, so I can see it before it comes to DVD! Luckily many of the others are attractive to the littles. We’ll be first in line for some of them!
on August 8th, 2009 at 8:33 amCan I just say ditto? You have every movie that’s on my list and then some. If we weren’t moving this weekend I would be seeing Julie and Julia, but as it stands I think it will be a weekend or two before we can go. Really, there are so many I am very very excited for.

on August 8th, 2009 at 10:00 amWhat an awesome post! I love it!
Please, read My Sister’s Keeper before you see the movie. You’ll be so disappointed if you go to the movie first.
on August 8th, 2009 at 10:47 amWhat a fun collection of trailers! I like reading the book first, because once the movie comes out it’s too easy just to watch it and miss the book. Plus I think it’s harder to imagine the characters differently after you have seen the director’s imaginings.
Very excited to look forward to some of these movies; thanks for collecting and posting all the trailers!
on August 8th, 2009 at 12:16 pmWhile I haven’t read the book yet, I’m really looking forward to Shutter Island. (based on Dennis Lehane book)
Also isn’t A Christmas Carol coming out with this year?
on August 8th, 2009 at 12:46 pmSome great book to movies coming out!!
I really hope you make the time to read The Time Traveler’s Wife. I read it last year, and couldn’t put it down. One of my favorites!
I am a little leary of The Road. Great actors, and a great director, but that story still haunts me. I feel like there is no movie that could possibly have the impact that Cormac McCarthy’s writing has.
It’ll be an interesting year…
on August 8th, 2009 at 1:17 pmVery cool post, Natasha. It’s great that so many really good books are being made into movies. With my overload I’m going to see a few of these without reading the books. I know – heresy!
on August 8th, 2009 at 2:14 pmI just watched the Pope Joan trailer and I have chills! That looks soooooo good (even better than the first trailer we saw)! I hope hope hope it opens near me!
The Lovely Bones also looks amazing, and of course I can’t wait for Alice in Wonderland.
on August 8th, 2009 at 2:34 pmI must see The Road. Looks like a very good adaptation of the novel.
And, I have until March to figure out where my local 3D IMAX theater is. Alice looks like fun.
on August 8th, 2009 at 3:07 pmAs of now I’m looking forward to The Lovely Bones & Fantastic Mr. Fox. I read The Lovely Bones about two months ago, and wow. It was amazing. I’m so curious to see it as a movie, and I was waiting for yesterday to come to see the trailer! I just love Roald Dahl, so I think I’m a little overly excited about this one!
on August 8th, 2009 at 4:31 pmLooking forward to New Moon, The Road, and Time Traveler’s Wife the most, definitely. Already saw HP and the Half-Blood Prince with my kids.
on August 8th, 2009 at 4:49 pmOh! You MUST read “My Sister’s Keeper”! That book was so absolutely (depressingly) wonderful! I wanted to see the movie – but hear the end has totally changed which makes me not eager to see it.. But seriously – read it!
on August 8th, 2009 at 8:45 pmI’m looking forward to the new Sherlock Holmes movie. I’m not sure if it’s based on a specific Holmes story, but I’m excited to see how RDJ interprets the character of Holmes.
on August 9th, 2009 at 1:02 amJulie and Julia was LOTS of fun, but if you could pick one of the two books to read, I’d suggest reading My Life in France by Julia Child. It’s by far the better book. (And the better part of the movie!)
on August 9th, 2009 at 7:05 amWow! So many! I have been trying to read the books before I seen the movie but may have to see a few movies and break that rule if I want to see them at the theater!
on August 9th, 2009 at 9:52 amgreat post! I can’t wait for New Moon to hit the screens here in Australia. read all the books several time and i adore the series.
on August 9th, 2009 at 8:41 pmI’m dying to watch Time Traveller’s Wife. I still haven’t managed to find a copy of the book, so I’m waiting for the movie
on August 9th, 2009 at 9:49 pmThere are sooo many exciting movies to see. I am really looking for to The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Lovely Bones. This Friday, I’m leaving the kids at home with my husband and going to see The Time Traveler’s Wife. I am beyond excited.
The Lovely Bones trailer looks amazing!! I don’t know if I can wait to see it.
Great list of all the movies coming out! The only one that I’m not too excited to see (so I didn’t) was My Sister’s Keeper. Once I heard that they changed the ending, I had no desire to see it.
on August 10th, 2009 at 8:20 amI’m excited about pretty much all of those! “The Lovely Bones” looks FANTASTIC, even though I haven’t read the book. “The Time Traveler’s Wife” looks like a beautiful adaptation (and I did, in fact, really like the book). “Julie & Julia,” also looks cute. And I can’t explain my excitement about “Where the WIld Things Are.” The 2nd trailer made it look EVEN BETTER!
(Oh, and of course “New Moon,” and “Alice in Wonderland.” The latter is one of my favorite books of all time so although I’m excited, I’m also nervous.)
on August 10th, 2009 at 8:20 amI’m sooooooo excited about “Where the Wild Things Are”. I share your incredulism (is that a word?) with your husband’s lack of knowledge about “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”! I’m worried about “The Time Traveler’s Wife”. I just feel like it could go horribly wrong. ~sigh~ I’m sad to say I will probably be braving the crouds to see “New Moon”. I saw “Twilight” on opening night
My friends and I braved the teenagers together! I am excited for your husband for the “Alice in Wonderland” movie. I know how much he loves Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. I foresee some excellent Halloween costumes in the near future…
on August 10th, 2009 at 9:34 pmOh Yeah! And Amy brought up “A Christmas Carol”! I saw the trailer in 3D when we went to see “Ice Age”. It looks SO good.
on August 10th, 2009 at 9:41 pmI loved Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The movie looks…interesting? Very different from the book, I think.
on August 11th, 2009 at 3:18 pmThis is the first time I’ve seen the trailer for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! My husband has been telling me about it for a while now. I’m pretty excited to see that one!! My son has been wanting that book read to him every night for the past few nights. Anyways, I didn’t know about a couple of these other movies either. I’m hoping that they will be as good as the books!!
on August 11th, 2009 at 9:47 pmAs a massive Harry Potter fan, I wasn’t impressed with the film :’(
And I hate having to say that, because I loved the trailers. I fear I may be nitpicking. I also wanted a massive fight at the end
You know when SPOILER —— Harry got his butt attacked by Snape for calling him a coward ——- SPOILER OVER
I was just thinking pwned.
I also refuse to watch My Sister’s Keeper until I read the book, I’ve read some of it.
It looks like there will be so many great films coming out!
on August 12th, 2009 at 8:31 amOoh, so many good movies! I have three young kids and NEVER get out to movies anymore, but I’d love to see Julie and Julia. I adored the book. And maybe I can take my kids to Wild Things (the title would be appropriate — I have three energetic boys)!
on August 21st, 2009 at 7:28 pmI’m defenitly one that has to read the books before viewing the movies. And I wanted to read the Time Travelers Wife for ages. So I got that one out of the library, The lovely bones and My Sisters Keeper shipped in (amongst some others). And I was truly overwhelmed by all of them.
I read them each in one day and they still are on my mind. Especially The Time Traveler’s Wife is an amazing piece of work.
I can’t wait for the movies. Non of them (not even My Sisters Keeper) are released in Belgium yet, neither is there a specific release date know. So I’m still waiting…
