Why Read Book Blogs? Three Book Bloggers Vlog the Answer

Why do book blogs matter?  Why should readers from all walks of life read book blogs?

Trish from Hey Lady! Whatcha Readin?, Amy from My Friend Amy and myself discuss why we think book blogs are so awesome.

Would you believe me if I told you that the above video was filmed almost two  months ago?  Well before the recent discussions found on many a blog and Twitter regarding book blogs in the aftermath of BEA?

At a time when anybody with an opinion and a computer can start a blog and have their voice heard, albeit one must raise their voice loud to be heard amongst the noise, book blogs are becoming more influential.  We are here.  And we are having the time of our lives.

So what say you?  If you already know the merits of book blogs and had to give somebody an elevator pitch about why they should turn to book blogs as their source of book recommendations and reviews what would you tell them?  And if you happened  upon this post with no opinion one way or the other, what do you think?  Have we convinced you?

  1. I think of my blog reviews like Trish said – as a friend talking to another friend about a book. I also go to different friends’ (blogs) for opinions on different types of books (memoirs, romance, women’s lit, etc).

I love these vlogs and hope to someday get the nerve to try it myself. Great job, ladies!

  2. The community of book bloggers has to be the friendliest I’ve ever encountered! I would agree with everything the three of you said. I write like I talk, and I like to think that separates me, in a good way, from the sometimes uppity demeanor of the newspaper reviews. I’m also very pleased with the number of non-bloggers I have following me. The word is spreading!

  3. I think the reading of book blogs (among non-bloggers) will be and is spreading by word of mouth.

  4. Cool discussion… Now I want to know more about you gals! Why do you blog about books? What are your backgrounds? How’d you get into this? I’ll have to check out your Web sites for answers.

  6. Great vlog! And the word of mouth thing is so important, because blogs magnify its effect so much. You all did a great job!

  7. thanks for this vlog. I read book blogs because I love how every blogger has a take on the book. Like Amy says, it makes the book a shared experience. You don’t find too many adults in every day life who are willing to form a children’s picture book – book club. But I love sharing ideas about them and reading what other bloggers have to say. I’m so glad you guys are out there. I’ll tweet this vlog to help you get the word out too!

  8. Are book bloggers really becoming more influential? I’m going to have to conduct some research…

There was what sounded like a gigantic crow screeching in the background at the end of your video. He wanted to express his opinion too!

  9. Thanks for the vlog. I think you ladies hit the nail on the head. I agree with every point you brought up. You know, I have a Bachelor’s degree in English, and for 4 years pretty much hated every blasted piece of literature they made me read. I like reading, but I like reading books that are enjoyable. That’s why I like book blogs, I can get an honest opinion on if a book is good or not.

  10. I heart the community of book bloggers. I’ve been trying to get my mom into some book blogs a little bit, but I think I have to find a blogger who likes the same books she does first.

  11. I admit to having a hard time deciding just which blogs to read. There are almost too many to even bother digging through. (Which is why my own blog is languishing in a forgotten corner.) But, I like the personal and even ranting and raving nature of a blog book review. While I like to know what books receive starred reviews, a professional reviewer isn’t usually going to rave about how awesome a book is or cry about the lameness of something they were hoping would be awesome. We definitely have more emotional range available.

  13. As you mentioned, bloggers are often like neighbors or friends, providing recommendations about good books. After reading a week’s worth of posts, you get a sense of shared values (or not). It’s great that blogs have proliferated, because the number of book critics in newspapers and magazines is dwindling, and someone needs to keep folks interested in reading.

  14. An elevator pitch for book blogs, huh? For me it is almost a safe haven–a place where I can talk about books without any restraint and know that someone out there is interested. I don’t talk about books a lot in real life because the look of disinterest breaks my heart. So glad I’ve found a group of people who are as passionate about the written word as I am (and can give GREAT suggestions!).
