The Nerds Heart YA Tournament = Awesomeness

nerdsheartya

I’m sure you’ve heard by now about the Nerds Heart YA Tournament, but if not let me fill you in on the details.  Conceived and organized by the awesome Renay, the Nerds Heart YA is a book tournament (similar to SLJ’s Battle of the Books) that highlights sixteen young adult books published in 2008 that might not have garnered the attention of their counterparts.  It’s going to be exciting because, one, I’m a judge and, two, I’m not familiar with hardly any of the titles.

Here are the sixteen shortlisted books:

  • Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One Before by David Yoo
  • The Latent Powers of Dylan Fontaine by April Lurie
  • My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger
  • Alive and Well in Prague, New York by Daphne Grab
  • I Know It’s Over by C.K. Kelly Martin
  • The Last Exit to Normal by Michael Harmon
  • Pretty Monsters by Kelly Link
  • The Screwed Up Life of Charlie the Second by Drew Ferguson
  • The Shape of Water by Anne Spollen
  • What They Always Tell Us by Martin Wilson
  • The City in the Lake by Rachel Neumeier
  • Cracked Up To Be by Courtney Summers
  • Debbie Harry Sings In French by Meagan Brothers
  • Feathered by Laura Kasischke
  • Leftovers by Laura Wiess
  • The Opposite of Invisible by Liz Gallagher

  1. I have an acquaintence with a local author here in Orlando that recently published her first book called “Violet Raines Almost Got Struck by Lightning”, and maintains a blog called “Summer Friend”. She recently highlighted the author of “Cracked Up to Be”, Courtney Summers. Ms. Summers makes her own book trailers, and the trailer for this particular book is amazing. Other than that one, I’ve not heard of any of these books. I’ll look forward to hearing about the winners!

  2. This sounds really cool – I loved SLJ’s Battle of the Books.

I’ll be interested to see what you think of “I Know It’s Over.” I read it earlier this year and, sadly, deeply disliked it.

  3. I was at the library yesterday and saw I Know It’s Over on the shelf, so I snatched it up! I can’t wait to start reading more of these titles…so fun!

  4. Sandy – I’m with you. I’m not familiar with many of them either.

Janssen – I haven’t started it yet, but now I wonder if I’d like it or not.

    Kelly – Oh good!

For some reason, Askimet Spam is giving me a lot of false positives. Even to those who have left me many comments before. So if you leave a comment, hit submit, and it seems to go the way of the wind, don't resubmit it. I'll catch it and publish it. Also, if you leave 2 or more links in your comment, it automatically goes into moderation. I'll catch that too.

I love and invite your comments. I thrive on them. But by posting a comment, you agree to not post off topic, defamatory, obscene, abusive, or use language that is not family friendly.
