Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (a preview of sorts)
Do you know how many people will not be able to resist making a pun of Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins and say that the book is catching fire? Well, include me in that bunch because it’s true. I’m not writing up a full review because with the book still not coming out for another three months it feels a bit silly. As September 1st draws nearer you’ll find a more complete review.
But I will say this: I NEED the third book NOW!
I’m almost a bit tempted to tell people that if you haven’t yet read Hunger Games (my book review) then you might as well wait until the third book is published and then read them all together. Because you won’t want to wait between books. But if you like to wait, then by all means, don’t deny yourself.
My neighborhood book club read Hunger Games two months ago and when we met last week I brought my copy of Catching Fire. They were all clamoring so bad that we drew names for the order in which they’d read it. The first who finished it already, told me very sarcastically “Thanks a lot.“ She’s not to happy about having to wait either.
I honestly wasn’t sure where Catching Fire was going to take us. I really, really thought it was going to go a completely different direction and then it didn’t and then I wondered how it would be different from the first book, then it twisted again, then stuff happened, then more stuff happened, and then the last twenty pages just flew by and stuff is still happening and the book ends on this HUGE cliffhanger! (How’s that for my eloquently stated review?!)
Catching Fire book trailer:
Argh! We all need a little anticipation in our life right? Must think positive thoughts and will time to pass faster.

I’m not usually a pre-order kind of girl, but I dont’ think I’m going to be able to wait until this one gets to the library…
on June 8th, 2009 at 6:22 amI am dying to read this one, but at the same time, I don’t mind putting off the frantic waiting a little bit longer.
Plus, I want to reread Hunger Games before I read Catching Fire.
on June 8th, 2009 at 7:15 amI was very excited to get Catching Fire at BEA, too. I bought Hunger Games at the airport so I could read it first. Now I wonder if I should wait to read them.
on June 8th, 2009 at 7:56 amI’m finding myself in a quandary, I really want to read this and soon, but if I do, it’s just that much longer to wait for #3.
on June 8th, 2009 at 8:49 amThat is the best book trailer I have ever seen – thank you for sharing!
I am so jealous that you have a copy already, but am so pleased to hear it is living up to expectations. I have already pre-ordered my copy.
on June 8th, 2009 at 8:49 amI haven’t read Hunger Games yet… in fact, I hadn’t even heard of it until all this Catching Fire business. It’ll be yet another book to salivate over and wish I could read faster.
Maybe I will wait for the third book then pounce on all of them in a reading frenzy.
Thanks, btw, for the help with the Google Reader. With some work and a late night, I’ve gotten quite a few of the blogs subbed in it. Now I think I can actually keep up with them all! *YaY!*
on June 8th, 2009 at 9:15 amARGH! We read Hunger Games as a book club after I’d already read it. I can hardly wait for Catching Fire. I will pre-order my copy as our school library CANNOT do that!!
on June 8th, 2009 at 9:45 amOh man, I want to read this so bad. I actually got chills watching that trailer. At the same time, a major cliffhanger doesn’t sound happy. I hate waiting.
on June 8th, 2009 at 10:44 amI haven’t read Hunger Games and I do not have Catching Fire (as only a few of you BEA’s do) so I will take your advice and read all three together whey they are all out. They sure are generating a lot of buzz.
on June 8th, 2009 at 10:50 amMy jealousy factor keeps ramping up with all the “reviews” of Catching Fire going around. Sigh. I suppose I will have to wait.
on June 8th, 2009 at 11:09 amARGH! I feel like the Hulk when it comes to this book: ME WANT BOOK NOW!
on June 8th, 2009 at 11:50 amLet’s just say that the kids and I are about to wet our pants waiting on this. I will have to get the audio, as we listened to The Hunger Games on audio as well and was brilliant. I am happy and relieved to hear that it met your expectations. I’d have been heartbroken if it was disappointing. Sigh. I just can’t stand it.
on June 8th, 2009 at 12:08 pmI have been dieing to get this book since I finished Hunger Games in September. I know I will be dieing for the third after reading the last word of Catching Fire. I am checking the days off my calender awaiting the special day. We are moving this summer maybe we need to relocate to your neighborhood, the book club there seems to have some very interesting perks!
on June 8th, 2009 at 12:12 pmI think I’ll wait until they are all out then. You’re right, this book is about all you hear about on all the book blogs; everyone is trying to get their hands on it!
Since I don’t really know about all the hype quite yet, I better wait so that I don’t have to wait. Thanks!
on June 8th, 2009 at 12:49 pmI’m tempted to wait to read Catching Fire until the 3rd book comes out even though I’ve read The Hunger Games. HOWEVER. I don’t think I’ll be able to handle that once everyone’s reviews start coming out, so I think I should probably just wait my excruciatingly long turn at the library (how did they order only ONE copy? At 3 weeks per person, it could take 5 months!)
on June 8th, 2009 at 1:04 pmJuuust kidding. I looked more closely and they have 5 copies. I should read it within about a month of release. Crisis averted.
on June 8th, 2009 at 1:05 pmYou took in your ARC copy and made it out alive? ;o)
Thankfully I think the release date in the UK is pretty near the US one (Hunger Games didn’t come out over here until Jan) so at least I won’t have to suffer through all the reviews and still have to wait!
on June 8th, 2009 at 1:08 pmYeah, I feel the same way, Natasha. Thrilled to get it, couldn’t have possibly resisted reading it immediately, but now … wishing I still had it ahead of me. I’ll bet there won’t be ARCs for book 3, either. So it’s going to be a long, long, long wait.
on June 8th, 2009 at 2:19 pmA long wait…can’t handle it! Haven’t even had a chance to start Catching Fire yet.
on June 8th, 2009 at 4:20 pmNot feeling sorry for you at all. At least you get to read Catching Fire while the rest of us drool and wait.
on June 8th, 2009 at 5:05 pmI can’t wait… I want to read this book NOW!
on June 8th, 2009 at 5:54 pmHi there, I’m a new blogger and found your blog by following the grapevine from one blog to the next. I follow you now, so visitors to my blog might follow the grapevine to you too!
I had no idea there was such a community of book review blogs out there! It will be impossible for me to read everything that catches my eye via your reviews, but I’m certainly going to build up a great “wishlist” of books to read!
on June 8th, 2009 at 5:55 pmI loved it. Thought it was better than The Hunger Games. But I think the anticipation…it happens so rarely with books, I love the way it brings readers together as a community.
So I say…read it now!
on June 8th, 2009 at 7:14 pmOh my god, I NEED to read this book. September feels so far away. I only just finished The Hunger Games a few days ago but my husband says it’s all I’ve been talking about. And somewhat strangely, I’ve been carrying the book around with me, even though I’ve finished it. I just can’t help myself!
on June 9th, 2009 at 1:53 amI am jealous that you got your hands on this book prior to publication!
on June 9th, 2009 at 5:48 amI think that’s what I’ll do. I just know how impatient I am and I have a good feeling that I’ll enjoy this series a lot so I think I’m going to wait. Or at least I’m going to try to wait…
on June 12th, 2009 at 2:34 am**cries**
September is so far away! Now you’ve gone and made me want to read this book even MORE. I read Hunger Games several weeks back and I was so entirely sucked in (as most are) that I’m just beside myself to get my hands on this and read it as soon as possible.
The worst of it all is that I’m trying to avoid hearing about it from all the wonderful bloggers who’ve already had the chance to read it. I skim posts to make sure nothing important is divulged so I don’t get spoiled as I think it’s going to be worth not knowing as I read the book. I don’t want to ruin it.
I’m glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you not divulging big points of the story
on June 12th, 2009 at 9:26 amSigh! I just checked out the first one from the library. I think I’m going to wait until all the books are published!
on June 12th, 2009 at 11:55 amYou’re right, the end of Catching Fire is going to drive me crazy. I hope Suzanne Collins already had the third book planned out and is already on her way to finishing it, because she’s gaining rabid fans left and right. I am glad I got the ARC of Catching Fire, but I am going to be rereading the first two books over and over until the third comes out.
on June 12th, 2009 at 12:26 pmThanks everybody for your comments! Keep them coming especially when you get a chance to read it. Can’t wait for this one to be released.
on June 12th, 2009 at 7:01 pmI can’t wait to read this as slowly as possible to drag out every nuance and emotion.
on June 21st, 2009 at 9:37 amI finnished Hunger Games a month ago but now i am going to keep rereading it untill i get a coppy of Catching Fire. Hopefully i wont read it in a day like i did the first one. I dont want to have to wait for the 3rd one!
on July 7th, 2009 at 8:21 pmI love these books and Collin’s writing. Thanks for these review it just makes me more excited for September 1st. But how did you get an ARC copy of Catching Fire?
on July 9th, 2009 at 12:00 pmI just finished my ARC of Catching Fire…wow. No kidding, I can’t wait to read the next book! (I’m also FORCING myself not to post the review that I’ve already written!) Do we have an ETA on book 3???
on July 26th, 2009 at 6:47 pmOMG!!!!!!!! a librarian got the advanced reader’s copy, and let me borrowed it, and it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and major major cliffhanger!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARG!! can’t wait until the 3rd, sooooooooo tempting to talk about it!!
on July 27th, 2009 at 3:58 pmI am soo jealous that you got an advanced copy!!!!… I’ve been waiting for catching fire since I finished Hunger Games LAST September!!!
on July 28th, 2009 at 7:59 pmIt seems like everybody reads books before I do, even though I usually read them the day they come out!
Can I borrow it? I live in Utah
on July 28th, 2009 at 9:10 pmOMG! how did you get a copy?! i have read the hunger games about 20 times, no lie I LOVE THAT BOOK!! i have been in pure AGONY waiting for Catching fire!
on August 6th, 2009 at 6:53 pmMy friend’s dad works with Scholastic, so she gets ARC’s allllll the time. She got the ARC for Catching Fire, but the line was so long that I just told her I want to be first after her for the third one and that I’ll just by Catching Fire on September 1st.
Gah, I can’t wait though, but it will be perfect timing because I’ll be in the car all day and at the sk8ing rink, so when I’m not sk8ing I’ll read it, and I’ll get the big backseat in the car so I can lie down and read.
on August 22nd, 2009 at 10:15 pmI’ve been waiting a while for this book. Now that it’s out and the reviews tell me Miss Collins is keeping up the good work, i’m already worried about having to wait for the next one. In the mean time, i’ll just concentrate on reading Catching Fire as slowly as i can without driving myself crazy.
