GIVEAWAY: Newbery Honor Book, Savvy by Ingrid Law
Yesterday, I was thrilled to interview Ingrid Law who just received a 2009 Newbery Honor for her debut novel Savvy. Savvy is such a fun, whimsical book with a lot of heart and I really enjoyed it. I’m thrilled to pass on another copy of Savvy to one of my blog readers (I’m just super sad that I wasn’t able to have it signed when I was at the LA Times Festival of Books.) If you haven’t read Savvy yet then you definitely want to enter for this one. Or if you have a young reader in your home or know a young reader, this would be the perfect book for them!
To enter, simply share with me your savvy. What’s a savvy you say? Why I’m glad you asked! In the Beaumont family, at the age of 13, each child receives their own savvy. Think supernatural ability. No one knows what savvy is going to appear on their special day and their new talent must be tamed. Mibb’s mother can do everything perfectly, even if she makes a mistake, it’s a perfect mistake. Her grandfather can create land and her late grandmother was able to catch radio waves and put them in jars. Rocket, age seventeen, can create electricity, and Fish, age fourteen, can control water. In fact when he turned thirteen he wasn’t able to control his savvy and the whole family had to movie after he created a hurricane.
But what’s so wonderful about savvies, is that we each already have our own. A deep, special hidden talent that is just waiting to be discovered and nurtured. And I think that’s partly what makes this book so special, it explores finding our own special savvies.
In my interview with Ingrid Law, she said that her savvy would be to breathe underwater and to fly. In other interviews she’s mentioned that her natural savvy is that she smiles a lot, her silly savvy is that she’s clumsy and spills things all the time.
My dream savvy? That’s a hard question. I would love to snap my fingers and have the house clean itself and the food cook itself. That way I could have time to do other things. A savvy I already have? Hmm . . . I’d like to think that I have an eye for detail. Nothing escapes my attention.
If you’d like a copy of Savvy for yourself or as a gift for a friend, share with me what your dream savvy would be. If you could have any supernatural ability, what would it be? AND what’s a savvy that you think you already have? To qualify, you must answer BOTH of these questions. Think of it as me getting to know you better! Open internationally and will close Wednesday, May 6th.

I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

Fun questions:
If I could have a supernatural savvy it would be super speed. I’d love to be able to get chores done as fast as Clark Kent have. But I always wanted the ability to snap my fingers too and have the house clean itself. That’s something I wish for often. But super speed would come in handy in others ways as well.
The savvy I already have is my extra sensory perception. For example, I can tell if my son’s back is bothering him when he is miles away, or if someone is pregnant and sometimes before they even know.
on April 29th, 2009 at 6:48 amMy supernatural savvy would be to freeze time, so I could sit around and read book after book (and maybe do a spot of cleaning) while still having time for everything else in my life.
My real savvy, hmmm. I am a fantastic multi-tasker, to the point where I almost HAVE to multi-task in order to be able to concentrate on what I’m doing.
on April 29th, 2009 at 7:57 amGreat questions! For my supernatural savvy, I would like to be in more than one place at a time. I have to work, but would also love to be able to spend some extra time with my boys. And, since I volunteer a lot, it would give me the opportunity to do a little more for the community.
My savvy is definitely an extra sensory perception. I believe I share it with all of my siblings. We all seem to call my Mom within minutes of one another. I can generally tell who is calling when the phone rings, without looking at the phone. My oldest son is empathic..he picks up and seems to “absorb” the emotions of others around him. He can also generally explain those individuals are feeling that way. We first noticed this when he was a toddler. I think it’s fantastic.
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:01 amFor my supernatural savvy, I’d like to be able to see something through someone else’s eyes and let that person see it the way I do for just a minute.
My savvy in real life is that I smile a lot and can make people laugh.
I’d love to read this book.
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:07 amOh my gosh – I feel like a beauty padgent contestant…my Supernatural Savvy would be to bring Peace and Harmony to the world, and end Hunger!
Not original, but certainly sincere!
Thanks for the giveaway!
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:18 amI would love to have a savvy where I could imagine a place in my mind, and then I am there (similar to the movie Jumper). I love to travel, and I always wish that I could do it more and at great distances.
My real life savvy is being able to make up random recipes and it turns out tasty. I have never had to throw out food from a mistake, and my husband cannot figure out how I do it without measuring or just by thinking about ingredients that would taste well together. We just recently turned vegetarian so this savvy has really come in handy!
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:24 amI would love to have a supernatural savvy where I have the power to heal people. My real life savvy would be massaging people. They seem to want me to give them a massage every time were chilling. Maybe 1 should start charging them, but then i won’t be a superhero.
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:31 amWell, I’d say my real savvy is speed-reading!
Dream savvy… telepathy. I’ve always been fascinated by the idea. (Blame the Betazoids on Star Trek!)
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:42 amI would LOVE to be able to teleport to any where at any time. I HATE traveling and I’m ALWAYS late. ALWAYS! And if I try to be early, I’ll be super late! Never fails.
Obviously, my skill of time arrival is not my current Savvy! Currently I am very organized and I have a GREAT memory!
This book sounds amazing! I’m totally adding it to my must read list!
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:03 amMy dream savvy would be:
The ability to clone myself so I can be in many different places at once.
A savvy that I already have:
The ability to quickly assess a situation and make a decision… quickly. A lot of people cannot do that.
Thanks for the giveaway!
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:13 amLeisa – But having super speed still means that you have to do the work. I’d rather not do the work at all! BTW – did you finish that season of Smallville you borrowed?
Jen – Oh yes! Freeze time. Especially to sleep. I never get enough sleep anymore. With the blog, you’d think I had a newborn in the house. I go to bed way to late! That’s fantastic that you can multi-task!
Jenn – Well, we talked about your savvy a bit on Twitter. My sister (Leisa above) has that exact same savvy too. I’m a believer.
Jeanne – That would be a great savvy to have. To walk in somebody else’s shoes so to speak. Your natural savvy is the same as Ingrid’s!
Libby – That is an ambitious and unselfish savvy! What about a savvy that you already have?
Natasha – Hey! Beautiful name!
I’d love to have that savvy. To travel anywhere at anytime. I’m very, very tempted by that one. I wish I had your cooking savvy. I really do dislike cooking. I bet your husband loves that.
Liyana – Wanna come over to my house? I feel a crick coming on in my neck!
Britt – I don’t know if I’d like somebody to read my mind but it would be fascinating to read somebody else’s.
Jessica – A great memory is awesome! I’m good with some things, others not so well.
Ti – I’d like to clone myself too. There is always to much to do and not enough me’s to go around.
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:32 amOh, I loved this book!
What savvy I want: to always say the right thing to people
What I probably have: to always say the wrong thing to people
Hm…a little disconnect there.
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:38 amGreat thought provoking questions. I chose not to read the comments before I wrote this, as I didn’t want to be persuaded to change my orinigal thoughts.
My dream savvy would be to say just the right thing at just the right time. I am often tongue-tied OR what I mean to say does not actually come out the way I want. This savvy would eliminate a lot of miscommunication.
The savvy I already have? that is tough as I don’t think I am very savvy. Perhaps my organizational skills. Some might label me obsessive/compulsive – but I truly do strive to have a right place for everything – and to keep a clutter free environment.
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:50 amok — I really want you to know that I did NOT read Melissa’s comments before I wrote mine. Perhaps she is my missing twin????
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:52 amMy dream savvy would be to read other people’s minds!
on April 29th, 2009 at 11:27 amMy natural one is the ability to listen and keep a secret.
Invisibility would be my pick. I am very in touch with my intuition. Sometimes it’s scary how good I am at predicting things.
on April 29th, 2009 at 11:32 amReal savvy? I can find things, sometimes even when I’m not in the same place as the person who lost it or the missing object. (Mostly this is just being observant, though.)
Dream savvy? Making time stop (several people mentioned variations of this) so I could get more done (reading, blogging, knitting, spinning …) would be great.
on April 29th, 2009 at 11:57 amI’ve always liked Wolverine’s ability – to have the quick regeneration. That way I could stay young and still do dangerous things. The only problem with that is you still feel the pain of injuries. I guess I could live with that. What savvy do I already have?? I am going to say getting along with others. I try not to stir the waters too much.
on April 29th, 2009 at 2:36 pmWhat a fun contest! I think we all would like to have the house clean itself with a magic wave of our arms. Super speed is a good one too because then you could get ANYTHING done quickly. So I think super speed would be my dream savvy.
Hmm…I think the savvy I already have would be either a creative savvy or a craft savvy. I like to think I can think creatively about things and I’m drawn to various crafts as well as photography.
Thanks for hosting!

on April 29th, 2009 at 2:40 pmMy dream savvy would be to create TIME, of course! The savvy I already have is that I don’t lose things. Other people may lose things for me, but *I* don’t lose things- not keys, not glasses, not anything.
(Now off to read everyone else’s. I skipped them because I didn’t want to steal someone else’s answer!)
on April 29th, 2009 at 2:59 pmI’d like my savvy to be the ability to have all my belongings perfectly organized and quick & easy to retrieve (is that such a librarian answer or what?)
I think I have the savvy of having a great weekly menu on a tight budget.
on April 29th, 2009 at 3:24 pmGood topic! I’d want the common sense, wisdom that age brings back when I was a teen and could have used it more!
ie: thinking an education and career for a woman wasn’t all that important & thinking I was fat at 105 pounds WHAT? yeah not too bright there LOL
on April 29th, 2009 at 4:51 pmI want to teleport. I love to travel and see new places. How great would it be to live here but be able to go to Europe for dinner and be home by bed? I would love to transport myself (and luggage! LOL) in the blink of an eye. But I’d want my friends to do this too, so I wouldn’t have to travel alone.
What do I have? Hummm I don’t think this is quite what you mean, but I do have a particular talent in the kitchen: I rarely repeat meals and I rarely use a recipe and I don’t need to taste the food to know if it will be good because I can taste the food in my mind. I think anyone could do this, but my friends say no. So that’s what I’m going with.
on April 29th, 2009 at 5:03 pmOMG! I swear I did NOT read (the other) Natasha’s answer! I posted my comment before reading the others. Are we twins separated by birth? No one will believe that I commented before reading. Wow!
on April 29th, 2009 at 5:05 pmMy dream savvy would definitely be the ability to travel in time. I’d love to see how other civilizations lived.
The savvy I already have? I have to go with my ability to read quickly. That was definitely an acquired savvy; I’ve had a lot of practice at it.
on April 29th, 2009 at 5:08 pmMy dream savvy would be the ability to see into someone heart.. to really know them and to see what makes them tick… and what they need…to be able to touch others in a profound way.
My daily savvy….I come up with amazing dinners from leftovers! Which in this economy is a real talent!!
on April 29th, 2009 at 5:32 pm@Beth F.- That is TOO funny! I can’t believe that both answers matched.
@Natasha— our name rocks! And yes, my husband LOVES that I can cook. He brags to everyone all the time about it!
These are a lot of fun to look at! I bet the author would have a blast reading these.
on April 29th, 2009 at 5:37 pmDream savvy- That would be to remember whatever I choose to. I have an awful memory; sometimes it’s a blessing so I would want to choose what to remember and still forget the rest : D
Savvy I may already have – is that sometimes I know when something is going to happen, like going to the store knowing I’m going to bump into someone I know and then do.
on April 29th, 2009 at 5:45 pmI was waiting to post until I thought of a better savvy, but I know I’ll forget if I don’t do it soon! My dream one: my first thought was the power to heal people. But, we do have relatives on the other side of the word, and somehow being able to get back and forth to see them (or get them here) without spending our life savings would be lovely. My real savvy…this is the hard part of the question. Can I steal the t-shirt slogan “I make hypoallergenic milk”? I don’t eat wheat, dairy, nuts, eggs, apple, and a few other things while nursing my son, and I still manage to find nourishment somehow.
on April 29th, 2009 at 8:33 pmHmmm….I think I would like for my mind to process things really quickly. So that I could learn new skills and such at a much faster rate.
My true to life savvy? I think that relationally I have a really good memory. (I remember things about people and friends really well)
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:16 pmMy savvy would be remembering where I put everything because I keep losing stuff!
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:24 pmOooooo … I want to play. I’m always stuck waiting for public transportation, so it would be real cool if I could teleport! Thanks for the cool giveaway!
on April 29th, 2009 at 9:27 pmok, if i could have any supersaavy? i’d have a perfect memory…i would never forget about things i need to do, would not need the calendar function on my i pod touch to beep me and would never be late for meetings.
my true life savvy? hmmm….i work with 6 and 7 year olds all day and still have my sanity (and the patience to go home to my own four year old)
here is hoping i win!
on April 29th, 2009 at 10:04 pmMy dream savvy would be to be able to always say the right thing at the right time. My natural savvy I already have is (this is harder to think of) that I can figure out almost any acronym given the proper context.
on April 30th, 2009 at 6:19 amOh I would love to be able to fly. Not because it would be useful so much as because I’ve always thought it would be fun! I used to dream I was flying all the time.
I’d love to read this book!
on April 30th, 2009 at 6:29 amHi there! It was so great to meet you at the FOB! I’m so entering your giveaway. Okay, my savvy is the ability to concentrate for long, long periods of time on…reading! Okay, maybe a little too obvious there. I wish my savvy was to be able to create more time
on April 30th, 2009 at 8:51 amThere are so many, it would be hard to just pick one, but I think If I had to choose, I would pick the ability to control the weather

on April 30th, 2009 at 10:24 amMy dream savvy would be shapeshifting, because if I could change my form at will, I could in theory live forever or give myself other abilities.
My real-life savvy? I guess worldbuilding for sf/fantasy stories. Or finding stuff.
on April 30th, 2009 at 2:22 pmMy dream savvy would be to have the ability to fly, although I’m strangely afraid of airplanes. =P
My real life savvy is probably being able to sense things. Like, for instance, I can tell when my friends and family are sad, mad, etc., and am usually able to know the reason behind it.
Thanks for all of these marveleous giveaways! (:
on April 30th, 2009 at 5:43 pmMy dream savvy would be to remember every single day of my life. I once read about a woman who could do this and that sounded so cool.
on April 30th, 2009 at 6:41 pmThanks for the giveaway!

I would have the ability to heal people. I guess I have a cooking savvy. I can taste a dish and usually replicate it in my kitchen.
on May 1st, 2009 at 5:35 amThanks!
Dream savvy: time travel
Already have: organization
Thanks for the giveaway!

on May 1st, 2009 at 10:19 amI would love to have a savvy where time would slow down for me to have more time to read. I love a good book and although I read daily there are so very many books I am wanting to read.
on May 1st, 2009 at 10:22 pmMy super savvy would be to be able to make quick decisions that would result in positive outcomes.
My natural savvy is to empathize with people and make them feel good about themselves.
on May 1st, 2009 at 10:40 pmThese are fun questions, but I had trouble with the first one.
My dream Savvy would be to get rid of physical pain, sort of like white lighters on Charmed could do.
I think my personal Savvy is my ability to teach. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do and I just love to see the light in a child’s eyes when they “get it!”

on May 2nd, 2009 at 7:08 amAs a reading teacher for the past 37 years (and retiring in 5 weeks but who is counting) this would be thrilling to win one of Ingrid Law’s book. I have seen this around but not had a chance to read it and it sounds fascinating! If I could have a savvy I think it would be to have good health as I think without it, nothing else matters and I could use some now in case there is a Savvy giver around! As for my own savvy….gee, I guess because I have such a passion for reading and writing that working with kids all these years and helping them to develop a love of books…some who enter saying they hate reading do not feel that way in June and that is I guess a savvy I have but I know it is something that I certainly take a pleasure in. So glad I finally had the nerve to come by…as your fame is far and wide and only blogging for barely 5 months, well, silly, isn’t it? Glad I did as I can see how a good blog should be run….I guess it takes time. I hope you come by and visit…would love some pointers on mine! Thanks for the giveaway! FINGERS CROSSED!
on May 2nd, 2009 at 9:13 amMy dream savvy would be to fly, because then I wouldn’t be afraid of heights anymore.
My real savvy? Hmmm… I make excellent blueberry cobbler and chocolate chip cookies, so I’ll say I have a secret baking talent. =)
lorin_arch (at) hotmail (dot) com
on May 2nd, 2009 at 6:27 pmHmmmm….dream savvy?? Probably the ability to stop time. I never have time to get everything done…and I’m late everywhere I go!!
Real savvy?? I’m really good with people. I can talk to anyone whether they are 5 or 80! That’s probably why I’ve always done so well in the service industy.
on May 3rd, 2009 at 4:21 amI would love the ability travel anywhere in the world in a second, and anyone who is touching me can go along. I can imagine dropping my son off to school. It would take 1 second, rather than 20 minutes round trip! After, I would put on my bathing suit, and head to Fiji for the day. At night, I may dine in Paris. My savvy I currently have is the ability to be extremely patient with my son. As a result, he is an incredible person. I’d love the book, because he recently turned 13, so it would be fun for both of us.
on May 3rd, 2009 at 11:01 amOH OH OH OH! I loved this book! My big regret was that I didn’t have time to read it with my daughter before it had to go back to the library!
If I could have a Savvy…hmmm…I’m going to go with the classic being able to fly or being invisible. Though I am mildly pretrified of heights…maybe I should change that!
Such a fun book! I enjoyed this more than The Graveyard Book which won the Newbery.
The savvy I think I already posess….hmmm…patience and the ability to tune out the sound of children whining.
My daughter says her Savvy is to draw pictures and “learn stuff.”
My daughter say she would like to talk to animals. Wait, I have to clarify she says, she wants to talk WITH animals.
on May 3rd, 2009 at 9:50 pmMy dream savvy would be to know the right thing to say and do for people in every situation. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have that instinctual knowlege of what people needed?
My real savvy might be that I’m a good listener and come across as non-judgmental.
I’m really looking forward to reading this book! I’m going to go put it on reserve at the library right now.
on May 4th, 2009 at 12:43 amThis books sounds great!
My dream savvy would be the ability to transport myself anywhere instantly.
My real savvy is probably that I am very organized and meticulous.
Thanks for entering me!
on May 4th, 2009 at 8:53 pmForgot to add that my real savvy is that people like telling me their problems!
on May 6th, 2009 at 8:02 amI’ve mentioned before that my dream savvy would be to remember where I put things. My true savvy is knowing when to hold my tongue. Believe me! It’s gotten me out of a lot of trouble!
on May 6th, 2009 at 8:05 amWell, usually I would say that my savvy would be invisibility, but as I’m stuck writing several end-of-semester papers right now I’d want a paper-writing savvy. Snap! Bam! Papers done. Free time (for reading and writing): start. Yesss.
on May 6th, 2009 at 1:19 pmI’ve just random.org’d the entries! And the winner is . . . #52! Congrats Carey! I’ll be in touch with a mailing address. Great savvies too!
on May 7th, 2009 at 8:41 am
