On Meeting Jodi Picoult and an AMAZING Giveaway!

I was really excited when my local independent bookstore, The King’s English Bookshop, put out their upcoming author tour list and saw that Jodi Picoult was making a stop in Salt Lake City to read from her newest book, Handle with Care. Of course, I had to go. She’s huge!!
I discovered that Jodi Picoult is one of those authors that once you see them in person, you just can’t help but like them. She has this feel good persona about her, which for some reason I wasn’t expecting, I don’t know why (okay, okay, I admit I haven’t liked everything I’ve read). But her energy was great. She began the evening by giving a reading from Handle with Care. And thank goodness, Jodi hates spoilers about as much as I do, so it was a nice spoil free evening. I loved hearing her read because I could hear how she imagined each voice and character as she wrote.
Here is a short video that I took (I would have loved to do more but I was running on low batteries! And I’m really, really sorry for the sideways video! I obviously wasn’t thinking when I took the video on my camera. I thought I fixed it because every time I view it on my computer, it’s normal. But every time it uploads to YouTube it’s sideways. I’m giving up and going with it.)
After the reading, Jodi Picoult took questions from the audience. I tried to transcribe her answers but her stories in response to the questions were so detailed and fun that it was impossible to transcribe. So these are briefly some of the questions and answers, but not even half of what she said. And if there are any mistakes, they are mine and not Jodi’s words.
Question: How did you choose this particular topic for Change of Heart?
Jodi Picoult Answer: While on book tour, she was reading a newspaper about a woman who was suing for a wrongful birth (meaning that had they known there child would be severely mentally or physically handicapped they would have terminated the pregnancy). She had never heard that term before – wrongful birth – and ended up interviewing the woman in addition to many others. It ends up that not a single one of the mothers would have ended the pregnancy had they had the choice. They loved their children, but taking care of them were expensive. In exchange for telling a single white lie while under oath in front of a judge, they would receive the money to take care of them. Easy, no? Picoult was drawn to this idea as well as the mixed message that it would give to a child who was there 100% mentally. Meaning, a mother saying “No, I wouldn’t have had you” and “I’m doing this for your own good.” Picoult spent a lot of time with families who had OI (brittle bone disease).
Question: How long does it take you to do the research for your books?
Jodi Picoult Answer: Nine months! Just like a baby! Her husband gives her a bunch of congratulatory ballons at the end of each nine months. Each book has a different pattern, but for Change of Heart it was 3 months research and six months writing.
Question: Do you do all of your research or do you outsource?
Jodi Picoult Answer: She keeps looking for her staff but can’t find them! Researching the book is the best part of the job and she wouldn’t give it up for anything. It’s exciting and it gets her excited about writing the book. Plus, when would she be able to do all the cool stuff like she does? I can’t remember all that she said, but needless to say, she had done a lot of cool stuff including ghost hunting, living with the Amish, and visiting death row. She also receives about 200 emails a day and she answers every single one of them. They are all written by her, she doesn’t outsource it at all.
Question: What’s your favorite book that you have written?
Jodi Picoult Answer: She says that this answer is subject to change at any time but it’s Second Glance because she had the best research for that book. She then went into this great story about going down to Rhode Island and going ghost hunting. She saw a lot of cool things. Wish I had done video of the answer to this question.
Question: When you begin writing a book, do you know how the book is going to end?
Jodi Picoult Answer: Yes, she definitely knows how it ends before she begins writing. She likes to leave the reader bread crumbs along the way so when the twist ending comes, the reader doesn’t feel duped. She always, always gives clues throughout the book. While she always knows how she is going to get from A to Z anything from B to Y is fair game. Her characters always surprise her.
Question: Most of your books take place in New England. What do you love about the area?
Jodi Picoult Answer: She’s actually from New York, but if a cat has kittens in the oven doesn’t mean that they are biscuits! She now lives in New Hampshire and loves it. One of the last holdouts of American with no strip malls, a green square. New England is antiquated with lots of history. Her books are a love letter to New England.
Question: How do you go from all of this to writing for Wonder Women?
Jodi Picoult: It all began when she wrote The Tenth Circle and her main character was a graphic novelist who didn’t express himself very well, so we read his story through the graphic novel portion of the book. Afterwards, D.C comics called and asked if she’d like to write some issues of Wonder Woman. Her initial thought was no, but her kids told her she’d be crazy. Writing Wonder Woman was the hardest thing that she has every done. It’s not a one man show. She has to work with illustrator, editor, etc. and if she wants Wonder Woman to meet up with Batman that she has to call Batman’s people and schedule a “playdate.” It was really stressful to to be trusted to advance the story and not ruin the characters long history.
Question: How involved were you with the movie My Sister’s Keeper, if at all?
Jodi Picoult Answer: She was just in LA and saw a screening for the movie which comes out in June. The actors are amazing! Even Cameron Diaz is good. It’s beautifully shot. If you’ve read the book, you’ll recognize 90% of the movie. Her friend kept getting mad at her during the screening because she’d keep feeding the lines to her. But she had no say whatsoever about the movie and they changed the ending! Horror. She was so upset and vocal about the change that she got thrown off the set. She says its a great movie and it is what it is. Just close your eyes for the last ten minutes and then go home and read the ending of the book. Definitely go see it.
Question: What was it like living with the Amish while researching Plain Truth?
Jodi Picoult Answer: She got introduced through a Mennonite via a message board and a family agreed to have her live with them for a week on their dairy farm. The father ignored her and they were highly suspicious of her motives because Oprah had just done an episode about living simple lifes and a lot of people were moving down to become Amish. Everything that happened in the book, she did on the farm with the exception of the church service because the Amish hold services every other weekend and she was there on the odd weekend. She did have the bishops and elders talk her through the scene though. Deeds speak louder than words. This was evident when they did Bible study from the English Bible instead of the German while she was there.
Question: Are they are any issues that you wouldn’t write about?
Jodi Picoult Answer: Not afraid of issues. And then she said something else very insightful that I didn’t write down. Sorry.
Question: Where did you get the idea for Keeping Faith? (I couldn’t hear this question and she didn’t repeat it. I think that’s what it was.)
Jodi Picoult Answer: The idea of God as a female figure came while she was playing with her young son, who asked her who God was. Somebody who watches out and protects us she responded. Son: Like a babysitter? Yes, like a great big babysitter. Son: So he’s a man? Well, that’s what most people believe yes. Son: Well all of my babysitters are girls. Light goes off in Picoult’s head. She doesn’t belong to any organized religion and thinks that there are a lot of different paths to get to the same place.
Question: Tell us about your next book?
Jodi Picoult Answer: Her next book, House Rules, is already finished and at the publishers and will come out in 2010. It’s about a man with high functioning Aspager’s Syndrome who is charged with murder. The book that she is researching now that will come out in 2011 is about embryo donation and gay rights.
Question: Before becoming a writer, did you have an interest in becoming a lawyer?
Jodi Picoult Answer: As every English major did at one point or another, she did consider going to law school. She’s very happy to not be a lawyer but enjoys researching all the loopholes in the legal system.

I don’t know that I can pick just one book, but I did enjoy PLAIN TRUTH. I loved that her husband gives her a bunch of balloons each time she finished a book. Some husbands wouldn’t even do that after that many “babies.”
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:21 amI am subscribed to your feed through Google Reader and I just tweeted!
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:21 amWow! What an awesome giveaway! I’m so jealous you got to meet Picoult! She was at a National Book Festival a few years ago but the lines for signing were just too long.
Ok..my favorite book by Jodi is Nineteen Minutes. It is an amazing and emotional book. She always writes about timely issues that other authors avoid. That book stayed with me for some time. I couldn’t forget it.
Ok..now to the good stuff. I follow you on twitter, I subscribe to you on Google Reader. I’m going to post a message on my blog about it now.
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:22 amWow! I think my favorite Jodi Picoult book is My Sister’s Keeper, but I haven’t read all of her work. I actually emailed Picoult one time and got a reply – I’m thrilled to know it was actually from her! I follow you on Twitter and subscribe to your blog through Google Reader.
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:30 amYou are right! This is huge! So, okay. I’ve only read two of her books. Vanishing Acts and The Pact. I think The Pact better, but maybe only slightly. I tried to read My Sister’s Keeper, but had to quit. Just couldn’t deal with it at the time or something. The Amish one sounds very interesting to me. All of them do actually. Though I think Nineteen Minutes might be a hard one for me too.
Okay, so you KNOW I’m a subscriber already, yes? And I will go link this to Facebook and you can see that ’cause we’re friends there too… and I’ll Twitter here and there, though all my friends there are your friends too, except maybe a slight handful!
Hmmmm. What else do I do? Oh, a post! Okay, that will be come in a bit.
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:32 amWhat an awesome night! I loved your post – especially the part about her upcoming books. I have had kids with Asperger’s, so I’ll be interested to read that one.
I’ll admit I haven’t read any of her books, but am dying to read Handle With Care! I have heard so many good things about it. I would love to win this contest!

I already follow you Twitter!!
AWESOME giveaway!!

on March 26th, 2009 at 10:37 amSounds like you had a great time. I’ve never read any of her books. I might be the only one left in the world who hasn’t. Good luck to you all! (I’m in Canada so don’t put my name in.)
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:38 amI’m glad you had such a good time at the reading.
I am reading Nineteen Minutes which is my first experience with her writing and I am liking it so far. I had no idea she had written so many books and from this post, I was really surprised to hear that she is writing for Wonder Woman! How funny is that?
I follow you on Twitter.
I am a follower of your blog as well.

on March 26th, 2009 at 10:46 amI tweeted (http://twitter.com/jennsbookshelf) and blogged (http://jennsbookshelf.blogspot.com/2009/03/amazing-jodi-picoult-giveaway-at-maw.html)
Great giveaway! My fav Picoult is My Sister’s Keeper. It was the first one of her’s that I read and it really stuck with me.
I follow you on Twitter.
And I subscribe.
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:54 amI haven’t read any of her books. But the one I’m most curious about is Nineteen Minutes. I remember my great-aunt reading that book and recommending it to me several months before she died. I never got around to reading it then, so I missed out on discussing it with her. But I’d love a chance to win because Jodi Picoult was one of her favorite authors.
I tweeted about the contest. Quick question, you said multiple tweets over a two week period? Do you want the links to the tweets, or should we @mawbooks?
I do follow you on twitter.
And I also am subscribed to your blog–I think via google reader or an rss feed of some sort.
Thank you for the opportunity!
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:02 amI haven’t read any of her books, sadly. I’m particularly interested in Nineteen Minutes, though. Just sounds like an interesting topic.
And obviously I subscribe to your feed
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:04 amI’m a big Picoult fan. My favorite book of hers is My Sister’s Keeper…I could just imagine myself in the parent’s shoes and how torn I would be with that moral dilemma, whether to use one child to save another. All of Jodi’s stories have a moral dilemma. If I win, I want to share these books with my sister.
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:09 amI’ve only read one — My Sister’s Keeper, but I did enjoy it!
Great giveaway!
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:16 amGreat contest! I love Jodi Picoult, but my absolute favorite book of hers is My Sister’s Keeper, I never mind reading it more than once.
I subscribe to your feed via Google Reader and am now following you on Twitter! I just tweeted about it, and I hope the @mawbooks works!
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:21 amMy sister’s keeper, definitely!
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:22 amI just followed you on Twitter, and you’ve been in my Bloglines for a long, long time… Thank you for this lovely giveaway!
Wow — how exciting! I’m going to admit right now that I’ve never read any of Picoult’s books — mostly because my friends were raving about them so much when I worked at a bookstore, and I decided I was going to be contrary and just avoid them! Of all the books I’ve seen so far, though, I would say Nineteen Minutes or Perfect Match appeal to me the most.
And I already follow you on Twitter.
I’ll tweet this in a few.
Thanks for the chance!!

on March 26th, 2009 at 11:27 amI think I’ve read every one of Jodi Picoult’s books, except for the newest one (yet!). Keeping Faith was my first exposure to her novels. If I have to choose just one favorite, it’s probably Perfect Match.
I’ve read elsewhere that Second Glance is her own favorite among her books, but it’s actually pretty far down on my list – sorry, Jodi!
Glad you had such a great experience meeting her!
As for the giveaway, I already follow you on Twitter and subscribe to the blog.
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:29 amBecky & Alicia – I subscribe to the search of “@mawbooks” in my Google Reader. So if it’s in the tweet, then I should see it.
on March 26th, 2009 at 11:38 amSalemn Falls is my favorite Jodi Picoult book. To overcome adversity and stand up for who are, not what people believe you are takes courage. She did a wonderful job portraying the other side of someone’s personality in this book. Thanks for the opportunity! Indigo
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:05 pmI’m following you on Twitter under sagraven. Thanks! Indigo
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:06 pmI also follow you in Google Reader! Thanks! Indigo
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:07 pmShe was the keynote speakers at BEA two years ago when I heard her speak for the first time. What impressed me how was far she’ll go in her research and how fast she turns a book out. Plus, she seems to a lovely person.
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:16 pmI think Plain Truth and My Sister’s Keeper are my favorite books by far. I’ve enjoyed all of Jodi’s books, that I’ve read, though.
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:45 pmTweet! http://twitter.com/Aleksija/status/1396080352
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:50 pmI’ve read all of her books except the new one. I liked them all, but Second Glance was an especially good read as it dealt with ghosts and ghosthunters. It was really different—it was easy to get caught up in it!
on March 26th, 2009 at 12:56 pmI’m in the middle of Handle With Care and it’s my favorite at the moment.
I also follow you now with bloglines and also on Twitter.
I also just tweeted: http://twitter.com/cfulcher
This is a really awesome giveaway and it’s so cool that you got to go to her signing.

on March 26th, 2009 at 2:16 pmTweeted thi contest.
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:18 pmWhat an amazing giveaway! I love almost everything Jodi Picoult has written, but my favorite is Keeping Faith. I love the way she handled the issue of faith vs. science and the ending that left you questioning everything you had come to think during the novel.
By the way, I’m an e-mail subscriber. I don’t comment often, but I look forward to reading your updates everyday. Thanks!
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:18 pmI loved Nineteen minutes. The way the book showed that everyone involved including the shooter had feelings and reasons to feel the way they did.
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:30 pmThere isn’t any of her books I don’t love!
If I can figure out how I’m becoming an email subscriber.
Hi Natasha!
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:37 pmNo need to enter me in the giveaway (though it is an awesome one!!) – I just wanted to say that every author reading I just never know what I’m going to get. In Jody’s pictures she always looks pleasant but you don’t know if that’s just a pose or if she’s really nice in person.
I have seen JP in person and think she seems like a fabulous person. I think my favorite of her books is Second Glance – I think it’s the most complicated of her books due to the multiple storylines and I really enjoyed the writing. I am subscribed to yo via bloglines. Thanks for the contest!
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:39 pmP.S. Just wanted to say that I’ve been subscribed for a while, not a newbie. Thanks!
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:41 pmWow – what a giveaway!
I’ve only read My Sister’s Keeper, but I enjoyed it. I’d love to read some more of her stuff.
I am a subscriber already (via RSS). I’m hoping you will have something on Laurie Anderson soon…
on March 26th, 2009 at 2:58 pmOk, I’ll be honest. I liked My Sisters Keeper (at least, it was ok) but I hated Change of Heart (I blasted it on my blog). That said, many of the gals in my book club LOVE Jodi’s books so … if I won these I’d split them up between the gals in the club. They’d be thrilled.
Thanks for this wonderful opportunity!
on March 26th, 2009 at 3:10 pmI used to think My Sister’s Keeper was great, but I’m re-reading and thinking it’s not as great the second time around. The other book I’ve read by her was The Pact, which I really liked.
I’m a long time subscriber to your blog, Natasha.
on March 26th, 2009 at 3:16 pmIf I “HAD” to pick a favorite I’d probably pick “My Sister’s Keeper”. It was the first one I read and got me hooked!!!! I just started “Songs of the Humpback” whale but have read about 4 more in between. My favorite author.
on March 26th, 2009 at 3:46 pmI have liked all of her books that I have read so far and have liked all of them for different reasons. I don’t know that I could pick one for my favorite, but the one that stuck with me the most was 19 Minutes. I am an elementary school teacher and it made me think about how what seems like innocent teasing can affect a person and what the outcome could eventually be.
on March 26th, 2009 at 3:52 pmAlright, I blogged about this giveaway (http://jacketsandcovers.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/one-amazing-giveaway/), I twittered it, I already follow you on twitter, and I’m already subscribed to your blog through Google Reader.
As for my favorite Picoult book(s), it’s a tie between Perfect Match and Salem Falls. I love them both because they show how imperfect our justice system is. I like that about her books; they make you question your values and your views.
on March 26th, 2009 at 4:23 pmI’d have to say my favorite book was “My Sisters Keeper”. I loved this book!! It was one of those books that you just can’t put down until you finish it, had me engrossed for days!!
on March 26th, 2009 at 4:38 pmMy favorite is “My Sister’s Keeper”. I’m looking forward to the movie, but concerned they changed the ending.
on March 26th, 2009 at 4:53 pmThis post is fascinating!! The depth of her research is amazing – no wonder her books are so good.
I have not read all her books, but the first one I read is still my favorite — Plain Truth. I did not know she was known for the twist ending and I must say — it caught me WAY off guard.
I am a loyal follower of your blog
— and I even tweet you every once in a while.
Hmmm….I think I may do a wrap up reading post for my March reads – which included We Need to Talk About Kevin – and sneak in a plug for Nineteen Minutes and this fantastic give away!!
on March 26th, 2009 at 5:10 pmMy favorite Jodi Picoult book is My Sisters Keeper because she just deals with real problems and really affect familes. Please include me in your giveaway.
on March 26th, 2009 at 6:36 pmThanks
Debbie
debdesk9@verizon.net
My Sister’s Keeper is my favorite it was my first J.Picoult book. I have not read any of her other books.
on March 26th, 2009 at 6:38 pmMy favorite book was Ninteen Minutes. The story had a great twist at the end and I loved the way she nailed the teen voice.
on March 26th, 2009 at 8:13 pmI tweeted the giveaway here http://twitter.com/monie_g/status/1398503495.
on March 26th, 2009 at 8:17 pmI’ve read all of Jodi Picoult’s books, and until I read “Handle with Care”, I could say that “Second Glance” was my favorite. I was completely submersed in the story and I remember thinking “wow” after I finished the book and wanting to go back immediately and read it again. “Handle with Care” was another great read, however, and could also be considered one of my favorites. I cannot wait for her next book!
on March 26th, 2009 at 8:21 pmMy favorite Piccoult book. .. hummm.. I will go with 19 minutes because I feel reading it gave me insight into the aftermath of all these shootings that have been plaguing our nation. I feel like sometimes after the 3-4 days straight of CNN and media.. that the situation is passed along for the next and we just never get to know. It isn’t always easy to know but Jodi helps us that way. I love her books. I have only read four of them. Each on has touched my life. oooooooooooh I want to win.
on March 26th, 2009 at 8:31 pmI fell in love with Jodi’s writing when I first read The Pact. I couldn’t put it down. Out of all of her books and I’ve read all of them I’d have to say that My Sister’s Keeper is my all time fave! There is just something about that story that touches me. It’s probably because I am a mother of a child who has a life threatening illness, and I lived in California when a family had a baby to keep their terminally ill daughter alive. I love how she takes real life issues and brings them to the surface and makes you think about how you’d handle it if it happened to you.
on March 26th, 2009 at 8:33 pmI am following you on Twitter.
on March 26th, 2009 at 8:37 pmYay another Natasha giveaway!!!!
1. I have had My Sister’s Keeper on my to read list forever. I really want to read it and I have heard great things about it. For that matter, I have heard great things about her other books as well.
2. I will repost when I figure the whole Twitter thing out. You will see my link on Facebook.
3. Here is the link I posted on my blog http://jennifermorrill.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/awesome-giveaway/
4. Woo hoo. I subcribe through Google Reader and have done so for quite a while now.
Yay Natasha!!! I’m excited!
on March 26th, 2009 at 9:19 pmPerhaps it’s because it’s the one I read first, but Keeping Faith is still my favorite Picoult book. I hope to cross the last few novels of hers I haven’t read off my list this year. This giveaway would help with that!
on March 26th, 2009 at 9:20 pmEven though my other comment is awaiting moderation…I figured out the Twitter world and have now completed all the steps! Yay me!
on March 26th, 2009 at 9:45 pmI love all of her books so it’s really hard to pick a favorite! I think it would be My Sister’s Keeper because I really felt for all of the characters and the situation that each of them were in. I was completely taken by surprise with the ending! Loved it!
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:16 pmI enjoy the paranormal and ghost sightings. Her book Second Chance sounds like my kind of book!
on March 26th, 2009 at 10:30 pmHer trip to Rhode Island to research Ghost Hunting sounds very fascinating. Please enter me in your fantastic book giveaway drawing!
Many thanks, Cindi

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite writers. She is very true to her writing and writes with such a strong voice. My Sister’s Keeper was one of my favorite books she has written. The plot was so interesting, one I have not read before and the underlying morals brought out another subject I was not aware of. Winning these books would be such an honor; I’ll be wearing my lucky underwear

This is really cool, Natasha. O.k., I haven’t read any of Picoult, but I thought Seventeen Minutes sounded good. I mentioned and linked to your giveaway on Facebook. I also blogged about it here: http://haikuamy.blogspot.com/2009/03/jodi-picoult-giveaway.html
I also have your blog in my blog list and my feed reader. So I think I covered everything.
I just wanted to comment on the last interview question. I was an English major, and I can honestly say I never thought about or wanted to be a lawyer. There, I said it. Ha ha, I guess I didn’t know any English majors who considered that profession, but I personally didn’t talk to many of the people in my classes. Maybe I’m the odd one out.
on March 27th, 2009 at 1:24 am‘My Sister’s keeper’ hands down. I am a mother so this book just pierced me right through. I could not stop crying while reading it and afterwards. I never had such an experience with any book before or since reading this one.
on March 27th, 2009 at 6:11 amOkay, I tweeted about it, I now will be your pesky follower and I added your blog to my Google Reader. yay!
on March 27th, 2009 at 6:15 amI have read most of Picoult’s books and my favorite would be Perfect Match. Being a mom of 2 young boys myself I found myself drawn to the mother in the story. Picoult takes real-life situations and twists them in her stories. I kept asking myself..what would I do in the same situation? I could not put this book down and read it in a weekend. Most of her books are on my “keep” shelf at home because I know I will read them again. Her books stay with you long after you have read them and they often can spark a great conversation with a fellow reader.
on March 27th, 2009 at 6:23 amWoW lucky you. I love Jodi and have read ALL of her books. I really loved: Handle With Care; CONGRATS.
on March 27th, 2009 at 6:51 amMy favorite book is Second Chance. I could not put it down!! I love ghost stories, and it kept me guessing. I am just starting Mercy. My second favorite was my sister’s keeper. I know so many families that have a second child when one is sick just in case. It’s like having a spare, and it damages that “extra” child unbelievably. I would love having all her books and having new ones I can read again and again.
on March 27th, 2009 at 6:53 amRebecca
Wow! What an amazing giveaway. I’ve only read 4 Jodi Picoult books but at the moment my favorite is still My Sister’s Keeper – although I really like Handle with Care.
Please enter me into your giveaway. I just subscribed to your blog and am now following you on twitter.
Thanks,
on March 27th, 2009 at 7:18 amNely
What a fun event, and how neat that you got to meet Ms. Picoult (and that she agreed to sign all those books!). Don’t bother entering me in the contest, as I’ve already read and released all of those books other than Handle With Care and Nineteen Minutes. You’re so sweet always to be thinking of your readers. I’ll mention this in my link post tomorrow and hopefully even more people will discover your wonderful blog.
on March 27th, 2009 at 7:55 am1) I have yet to read a book by Jodi Picoult, I just realized. I have seen the movie versions of The Tenth Circle and Plain Truth, but didn’t realize I hadn’t read the books! After reading the comments here, I think I’ll start with Salem Falls and My Sister’s Keeper.
2) I posted a link on Facebook
3-12) I am already a subscriber! Love your blog.
on March 27th, 2009 at 9:11 amGreat contest, I loved My Sisters Keeper. The stories Jodi writes are really amazing.
on March 27th, 2009 at 9:38 amoops, wrote the wrong email addy. This one is the correct one.
on March 27th, 2009 at 9:39 amMy favorite Jodi Picult book is “The Pact” I mean honestly how do you know what truly is going on in your child’s life if you are not an involved parent. I don’t mean pushing dreams on them I mean truly listening to them and knowing who they really are on the inside. As I read this book I could not imagine one of my children wanting to commit suicide. It made me want to get even closer to my kids not that I already aren’t but it also made me realize that they need to make choices on their own with our guidance but also so that they are happy about themselves as a human being. I love reading Jodi’s books cause even though they are sad and have bad things happen in them it is a major fact of life that stuff like this happens all the time and we can’t be oblivious to it. Life sucks sometimes and we need to be open to what we can do to make it better.
on March 27th, 2009 at 10:26 amJust blogged about it here too!
on March 27th, 2009 at 11:24 amI haven’t had the pleasure of reading any of Jodi Picoult’s books but I’ve had “My Sister’s Keeper” on my TO READ LIST for a while.
Please count me in – Thanks!

Hi! I would like to be entered for the book giveaway. You were very lucky to meet her and talk to her. Thanks again for doing this.
on March 27th, 2009 at 12:20 pmI’m one of those people who haven’t read a single Picoult book. I love what you said/recorded from the signing about her books being love letters to New England — I love books in which place has a huge role, so this makes me want to read Picoult’s work!
Oh, and I’m already subscribed to your blog.
on March 27th, 2009 at 12:26 pmJust posted about this giveaway: http://sueysbooks.blogspot.com/2009/03/remember-remember-and-some-friday.html
on March 27th, 2009 at 3:17 pmWow! What a great giveaway! I’ve only read My Sister’s Keeper an absolutely loved it. I would really enjoy reading more of her novels. Thanks!
on March 27th, 2009 at 4:25 pmThanks for this great giveaway. I read Nineteen Minutes and loved it.
on March 27th, 2009 at 5:56 pmI haven’t read anything yet – but have 2 on my shelf! I would like to read either Handle with Care of My Sister’s Keeper – or even Nineteen Minutes! I have heard such good things about them. I already follow through an RSS feed, but you are also on my blogroll. I am following you on twitter also!

on March 27th, 2009 at 9:13 pmI have never read any of Jodi Picoult’s books. Change of Heart and Keeping Faith sound interesting though. Most of what I read sounded interesting. So I should give her work a try. Just started following you on twitter.
on March 28th, 2009 at 12:45 amI’ve read several of her books and enjoyed them all except for one, and I can’t remember the name of it. Loved Keeping Faith. 19 minutes was great too! Oh, and I’m following you on Twitter.
on March 28th, 2009 at 1:05 pmMy favorite book written by Jodi Picoult is definitely My Sister’s Keeper. I loved how it dealt with teenagers, like myself. I thought the novel really tugged on your heartstrings. I was really interested in the court trial. I enjoyed the surprise ending, also. It’s probably my favorite book, ever. (:
on March 29th, 2009 at 12:35 pmI also sent 3 emails to my friends and subscribed by email to your blog!

on March 29th, 2009 at 1:59 pmMargay
I started reading My Sister’s Keeper a few months ago, but I was extremely busy that month with two trips, school, and a yard sale, so I had to put it down. What I read of it was fantastic, and when I went back to the library to take it out again, I was put on a pretty long waiting list. I still haven’t received it, and finally took my name off the list in hopes of purchasing it. Then, lucky me, I discovered this amazing contest on Natasha’s blog, which I frequent and have actually won a book from before! Hopefully I’ll win this contest and read not just My Sister’s Keeper, but the six other books included.
I’m also following you on Twitter, and subscribed to your blog. =]
on March 29th, 2009 at 6:20 pmIt really is difficult to pick just one, but I would defenitely say that Perfect Match was completely mind blowing. Could you imagine going through that, and making it out. I love all her books. She is an amazing author. Can’t wait for more.
on March 29th, 2009 at 10:18 pmI can’t read her books. After The Tenth Circle I couldn’t read anything at all for nearly two weeks. Her stories are just SO sad!
No need to enter me.
on March 30th, 2009 at 6:04 amI think The Pact is my favorite both by default (I think it’s the only Picoult I’ve read) and because I really enjoyed reading it.
on March 30th, 2009 at 7:52 amwow, that’s a great Q&A with an author at a bookstore! Amazing.
I would love to be entered because I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Picoult’s books and I haven’t read one yet! I’d probably like to start with 19 Min. because that’s the one that Anna said got her thinking the most.
I am a subscriber in google reader and I headed over here immediately upon seeing your post and Suey’s reminder! LOL
I only do sidebars for contests, but even though I don’t get extra entries, I’ll pop it on the sidebar…because its more fun when there are more entrants.
on March 30th, 2009 at 10:41 amMy Favorite would be Plain Truth=)
on March 30th, 2009 at 12:58 pmThanks for offering the giveaway!
I’d love to get Song of the Humpback Whale. My favorite to date had been My sister’s Keeper but I grew up in Hawaii and we have Humpbacks mate there. They are such interesting animals. All whales actually. What a wonderful give-a-way.
on March 31st, 2009 at 11:29 amI haven’t read this author, but I’d love to give her a try.
on March 31st, 2009 at 12:06 pmThe Pact! I’ve been told, time and time again to read it. Sadly, I haven’t gotten the time to go pick it up. I read the summary, and I was blown away. It seems so intricate and complex. It just intrigued me right off the bat.
I follow this blog, now.
on March 31st, 2009 at 2:16 pmWhat a great contest! I’ve only read a couple of her books, but I think my favorite so far is Nineteen Minutes.

on April 1st, 2009 at 4:36 pmI have only read two, but I would say that I liked Plain truth the best. My book club loved both of the two that we read by Picoult.

on April 2nd, 2009 at 4:42 pmI haven’t read any of Jodi’s books but I plan to. Which would be my choice to read? I would begin with Handle with Care.
on April 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 pmWow! What a fabulous give away. I haven’t read any of her books, but I remember kept trying to get My Sister’s Keeper from the library a few year’s back and never finding it in. Change of Heart sounds really interesting now that I’m a mother.

on April 3rd, 2009 at 1:25 pmMy favorite Jodi Picoult book, by far, is “Handle with Care”. I’d go so far as to say it changed my life! Like the main character, I have two girls – the youngest with severe special needs. The similarities go on and on, right down to spending most of our Disneyworld ‘vacation’ in the emergency room! Jodi really managed to capture the experience of special needs parents in a way I’ve never seen before. This book managed to give me what years of begging doctors for answers, crying to therapists, arguing with my husband, fighting the school system, and venting to friends have been unable to give – perspective. Reading a slightly different version of my experience was like seeing it with new eyes, and it seems to have shifted something in me. I feel lighter and more able to handle our situation.
on April 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 pmNot only is she my favorite author – I’m forever in her debt! I’d love to win as I always have to check and re-check her books out of the library!
Thanks,
Jane
p.s. I’m a subscriber too
I have only read one book by Jody Piccoult but absolutely loved it. Salem Falls. It was about false accusations. Very good.
I am not on Twitter but I am a subscriber.
Thanks for such a great contest!
on April 3rd, 2009 at 3:18 pmOh Good Lord! 117 comments! I will submit my measly entry…I am also a follower BTW. I have read a number of Jodi’s books. They give me stomach aches, but they are riveting. I don’t know how she does it and keeps her sanity, they all have such dark issues. How cool that you saw her live!
on April 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pmI have not read any of her books. Handle with Care sounds like a great read.

on April 5th, 2009 at 1:08 pmWould say my favorite is My Sister’s Keeper. I enjoy Picoult’s style — choices of controversial topics, her research, her “breadcrumbs” as you quoted her above. I’d love to win/receive the books for my April birthday. Thanks for the opportunity to try.
on April 5th, 2009 at 4:45 pmYes, I want to enter but let me tell you how excited I was to find your interview and post…Oh, to live in a city big enough to have great authors visit. If I win this giveaway I will gladly move My Sister’s Keeper to the top of my list!

I think my favorite is either My Sister’s Keeper or Salem Falls. MSK was so touching and heartbreaking and SF was so intriging, I couldn’t put either one of them down. I just loved them all. Harvesting the Heart was really interesting also, I loved the idea of the man on death row performing miracles. She’s amazing and I can’t wait for each new book. I would really love to win your giveaway. I wanted to go to the signing in SLC but was really sick that night, I was so sad I missed it, so thank you very much for posting what you could about the event. on April 6th, 2009 at 2:29 pmI really liked Plain Truth (the Amish one). I thought Jodi did a great job describing that culture. It was fascinating. My Sister’s Keeper was really, really good, but I had trouble dealing with the ending. It still haunts me!

on April 7th, 2009 at 4:04 pmMy favorite Jodi Picoult book is My Sister’s Keeper. I think how she builds the characters and their relationships with the other characters is just brilliant. Not to mention the amazing plot line. The ending leaves you heartbroken, and it certainly surprised me. (and I can be hard to surprise, predicting the endings to most books) I didn’t know the end to this one, that’s sure. I can’t wait to read her new book!!

on April 9th, 2009 at 10:09 amI don’t need to be entered to the giveaway, but I wanted to tell you 1. how jealous I am that you got to see her speak and 2. how much I enjoyed reading the Q&A. Maybe next time I’ll just skip work.
on April 9th, 2009 at 5:44 pmI haven’t read any of Jodi Picoult’s books but I like that most of them are set in New England and honestly would like the chance to read any of them especially Vanishing Acts or Perfect Match. This is a great giveaway and I really hope I win. Thanks.
on April 10th, 2009 at 2:28 amI’m tossing my name in the hat, as I’ve only read “My Sister’s Keeper”.
I’ve also twitted this one, and I follow you on Twitter (how I found out:-)
I’m now following your blog as well:-)
on April 10th, 2009 at 11:21 amI am most interested in “My Sister’s Keeper”. I just read the summary and finally understand why everyone has read it.
I am following on twitter.
on April 10th, 2009 at 5:16 pmI’m so happy I found this post! I was introduced to Jodi Picoult books just this week. I’m always looking for new books to read and the librarian at my college said that his wife really enjoyed the books, so here I am!! I’ve already devoured 3 of her books in 4 short days (it’s addicting). I think out of the three that I have read my favorite has been “The Pact”. I was absolutely speechless throughout the book, it was very mind-blowing. Jodi kept me on the edge of my seat. It was touching to read about the development of such a strong bond and love of two people.
I’m trying to think of ways to describe exactly what I loved about the book but it’s hard because I don’t want to give anything away to those of you who haven’t read it. All I have to say is READ IT!!! It’s a “pull out the tissues” book but I would recommend it to anyone, it’s something that will stick with you forever.
on April 10th, 2009 at 8:31 pmOh by the way, I added you to my email list. I can’t wait to enjoy the rest of Jodi’s books!!
on April 10th, 2009 at 8:33 pmI hope I’m not too late. My computer is going really slow right now.
I haven’t read any of Jodi Picoult’s novels yet, but I’m very interested in them. Right now I would most like to read Handle With Care, because I’ve seen stories similar to the plot on news sites and elsewhere.
I subscribed to your blog on Google Reader.

on April 18th, 2009 at 8:30 amJust an announcement that I will be posting the winners for this giveaway tomorrow. Took a bit of time with the # of entries and the 24 hour read-a-thon. Can’t wait to share it!
on April 20th, 2009 at 8:24 amI’ve included Jodi Picoult’s favorite books of all time on my blog
on May 20th, 2009 at 9:42 amShe’s my all time favourite writer. But too bad you only limit within the US only. =(
on June 19th, 2009 at 10:01 amWhat a brilliant article and give away. I don’t support you’d consider international entrants if they paid for the postage?
Anyway, I enjoyed your post so much I’m going to blog about it, especially Jodi’s response to the ending change of My Sister’s Keeper.
on August 8th, 2009 at 4:47 pmOk, I’m an idiot, didn’t read when the comp closed LOL.
on August 8th, 2009 at 4:51 pmWhat a great giveaway! I saw her last year when she did her Change of Heart tour, and I agree about how likable a person she is! At that time (I think it was April 2008) she had already finished writing Handle with Care. It’s crazy how much work goes into it after it’s done being written!
No need to enter me in the contest. I just wanted to comment on this. =)
