Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney
Finally! I was so disheartened when I was number 250 something on hold at the library for The Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney. At that rate it would be months before my turn. That goes to show you how popular The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is. It hasn’t been on the New York Times Bestseller list for as long as it has without good reason! So I was thrilled when the publisher Harry N. Abrams sent me a copy. When I opened the package, I turned to my husband and told him that reviewing books was totally worth it to get my hands on this book! And I don’t care what type of books you read, your age, your gender, whatever, Diary of a Wimpy Kid will be sure to give you at the very least a chuckle, but most likely will have you holding your sides in laughter.
In this third installment, Gregory is his normal self-centered who’s New Year resolution is to try to help other people improve because, after all, he doesn’t need to improve, he’s pretty much one of the best people he knows. I loved the book right away when Greg laid down right on top of the heater vent and said the experience was even better than being in bed. I loved it! One of the nicest things that I remember doing when I was a kid in winter was taking my blanket and sitting on top of the heater vent. Okay, I should tell the truth, I may have done this just last week.
A lot of different funny episodes that are perfect for reluctant readers including Greg’s father’s attempt to put him on a soccer team, burying a time capsule to dig back up when time travel is possible, trying to catch a snack culprit, sleeping over with a bunch of first graders and attending the junior high valentines dance. Truly entertaining stuff.
Loved it. Loved it all. I hope there is a fourth, a fifth, a sixth and even a twentieth. I’d eagerly read them all. This is a series that I’ll be buying the whole set when my boys get older. If I get them any sooner, there is a good chance they’ll get destroyed which would be a shame. I can’t wait to share what are quickly becoming classics with my boys, in the meantime I need to get my husband to read these books just so we could laugh together. I really think he’d like them.

So am I only one who reads on top of heater vents?! Tell me that’s not so weird.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

Natasha, that was my favorite thing to do as a child in the winter. I would hunch myself over them after breakfast every morning until the bus came. I’d forgotten about that! In Florida, we rarely have weather that would warrant such a thing, and even if we did, our vents are in the ceiling!
My son, who can’t sit still long enough to read anything, is addicted to these books. I am anxiously waiting to see how this one sells at our Spring Book Fair in a couple of weeks. At the fall one, we could not keep the first ones in stock…I was running to the Scholastic warehouse everyday to get more.
on March 18th, 2009 at 3:02 amI hadn’t ever considered reading this series before, but your raving about it makes me want to! Perhaps I’ll see how long the hold list at my library is.
Thanks for the review!
on March 18th, 2009 at 9:36 amI really need to read this series, my students loved them when I was teaching.
on March 18th, 2009 at 9:51 amMy students at my middle school eat these books up!! I’m hosting a book fair right now and that is my number one seller!! Great series!
on March 18th, 2009 at 10:26 amI love laying on the heater with a blanket. I slept on the floor for years this way (it drove my parents crazy)! Sadly, our heater vents are on the ceiling now, so I can’t anymore…
And, I love this series too!
on March 18th, 2009 at 11:51 amMy kids love this series we just finished reading #2 for the 3rd time. I’m still waiting for my turn on the waiting list at the library for #3 my boys can’t wait until we get to read it. Andrew even wants to start journaling on his own especially if he can draw pics for part of his journaling.
on March 18th, 2009 at 12:11 pmThis one looks like so much fun! Great review.
on March 18th, 2009 at 12:48 pmThe heat vent was my favorite part too – mostly because I still do sit on it with a blanket. Especially when I read
on March 18th, 2009 at 1:28 pmBack when we lived in a house that had a big floor vent, I used to love standing on top of it, but I don’t recall ever sitting down to read there.
My 9-year-old stepson is loving the Wimpy Kid series right now!
on March 18th, 2009 at 2:54 pmI like to sit in front of the space heater. I just love to be warm. I want to read these books. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Yet, I know I’ll be on the waiting list for awhile.
on March 18th, 2009 at 3:49 pmOh dear! Hopefully by 20 books little wimpy kid won’t be so wimpy anymore! I’ll have to pick one of these up for my brother (and then steal it from him).
on March 18th, 2009 at 7:44 pmI am on a long waiting list at my library for the 3rd book. I love this series. So funny.
on March 19th, 2009 at 4:51 amThis might be good for me to read with my little cousin. Thanks for the review.
I still sit on my heating vent. It’s got a lovely wooden cover over it and over looks the street. Its like a little nook where I read and people watch until ,my butt gets too hot and then I have to switch to the couch, bed or chair.
on March 19th, 2009 at 4:30 pmI haven’t gotten around to getting these yet but everyone seems to love them. I read near heater vents but I’ve never read on top of one lol. Besides its a bit too hot for the heat to be on down here!
on March 19th, 2009 at 4:58 pmI haven’t gotten to this series yet. True it’s hard to find in the library on the shelf. But I keep meaning to get to it all the same
on March 19th, 2009 at 5:21 pmI need to get these for Evan!
on March 19th, 2009 at 6:35 pmI haven’t read any of the books in this series, but it is becoming clearer that I am missing out.
on March 20th, 2009 at 9:40 amYet another good review. I’m falling behind the times!!!
on March 21st, 2009 at 10:02 amI LOVE THE BOOKS DIARY OF A WINPY KID IT SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COOL
on March 21st, 2009 at 11:01 pmThis sounds like a great read. I loved the first one and laughed and laughed. As far as reading on heating vents, I’m not one to do that, but I had a brother who would and it would make us mad because he was blocking all the heat from getting to the rest of us. So we would make him move. On the other hand we did try and roast marshmellows as kids on heat vents, never worked.
on March 24th, 2009 at 1:29 pmI seriously remember responding individually to each comment on this post but must have gotten sidetracked and closed my window because obviously I didn’t publish it! Anyways, good to know that I’m not the only one who sits on heater vents!
on March 24th, 2009 at 10:13 pmMy daughter read this one in just a couple of days. She has all 3 of them, plus the journal, and can’t get enough. I heard there’s another one coming out soon (Oct. maybe?).
on May 1st, 2009 at 1:51 pmI did not read diary of a wimpy kid last
on May 3rd, 2009 at 6:41 amsraw but I think I love it because I
