Mary Veronica’s Egg by Mary Nethery, Illustrated by Paul Yalowtiz

Book Cover: Mary Veronica's Egg by Mary NetheryIn Mary Veronica’s Egg by Mary Nethery and illustrated by Paul Yalowtiz Mary Veronica finds a single egg sitting all alone by the pond.  It’s still warm and unlike any other egg she’s seen.  She searches through the grass to find it’s mother but comes up empty.  She decided to take the egg home to take care of it, hatch it and then win the gold ribbon for the Most Unusual Pet at her schools pet fair that week.  She’s sure that it’s something special:  an alligator, a platypus or python.  Her older sister Mary Louise trys to convince her it’s just a rotten agg and her younger sister Mary Margaret is positive that it’s a dinosaur egg.  But when the day of the science fair arrives, Mary Veronica’s egg hasn’t hatched yet and the judge can’t give a ribbon for an ordinary unhatched egg.  Will it hatch in time?  Will it win the most unusual pet ribbon?

The anticipation in this book is really fun.  I was pretty sure that I knew what was in the egg but I was second guessing myself until the very end.  There is also some fun words that would make this a fun read-a-loud book like zinger, zapper, zowzer.  I also liked how it addressed how we don’t always get what we want, we have to deal with disappointment.  But also how are faith and confidence pay off in the end.

  1. That sounds good. I like the artwork. I am a little disappointed right now, I couldn’t find some the children’s books I wanted at our library. They didn’t carry Bonny Becker’s A Visitor for Bear, or Nic Bishops’s Frogs. They did have a few other titles from those authors though, so I put a hold on those. I know it is hard for a library to have everything, but don’t I wish they did.
