Video Chat: A Few Favorite Children’s Books and a Reading from My Little Boy

videoWelcome to the third edition of the Maw Books Video Chat!  I love today’s video, we are checking out what some of my kids favorite books are.  And you get a great reading from my three year old!

.
.

Books mentioned in the video:

The Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton (love how he has this one memorized!), Dora the Explorere- Choo Choo (he’s never seen the video ever, he just loves the train sounds), Noah’s Big Boat: A Lift-the-Flap Bible Book by Allia Zobel Nolan, illustrated by Steve Cox (lift the flap books are always a huge hit, this one was a gift from their grandparents – they love it), Richard Scarry’s First Little Learners Colors (who doesn’t love Richard Scarry!).

I’ve just asked my kids to bring me the books we talked about in the video. They have now emptied their entire bookshelf onto my bed!  I literally have a pile of books now surrounding me and more keep coming!

What are some of the books that you have to read over and over to  your kids?  To the point where they have them memorized?

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. Great video. It’s terrific to see how enthusiastic the boys are about books.

  2. I read The Very Hungery Caterpillar and The Good Night Book by Sandra Boyton to my son so many times that I didn’t even have to look at the pages while I was reading. He loved those books so much. Thanks for sharing!

  3. It’s awesome that they love books so much! I hope they keep up the enthusiasm. My mom claims I taught myself how to read by first memorizing my favorite books and then figuring out which words went with which shapes, if that makes sense, so your three-year-old may be well on his way! I think my favorite was Mickey Mouse and the Magic Peanut.

  4. I just love this video!!! It is so great to see their enthusiasm for books. And they’re just so darn cute too :)

I don’t have kids. But I can share one that I made Mom read over and over and over and over again. Really there are two. Umbrella by Taro Yashima. And Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb by Al Perkins. I loved the bon polo, bon polos and the dum ditty, dum ditty, dum, dum, dums.

  5. I just loved the video! That is one great little communicator you have there – he’ll be an asset to someone’s drama class, for sure.

I am pretty near word-perfect still on Where the Wild Things Are and Are You My Mother, and my son is now 21. Occasionally, chunks of books I read to my kindergarten kids like Mrs Wishy-Washy and The Hungry Giant come back to haunt me.

(Natasha, I had trouble accessing your blog and then comments, sent you tweet, but as you can see, all is fine now.)

  6. Your video brought back some great memories. I loved the animal sounds.

  7. Beth F. – Thanks!

Samantha – Dad reads this book to them. He says he loves the rhythm of it.

Meghan – Unfortunately, he doesn’t even know his ABC’s or numbers yet. Hopefully, he’ll catch up soon.

Becky – Those sound like great books! I’ll have to check into them!

Kathy – He does know his animal sounds!

  8. Susan – You caught it right when my sister was in fixing a file from the result of a hacker. Seriously, do people have nothing better to do with their day?! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! We have those books you mentioned but I don’t think we’ve pulled them out yet. They are under my bed waiting for their turn.

  9. They are so cute!

We read Knuffle Bunny a LOT. Doggies by Boynton. Pirates Don’t Do Diapers and How I Became a Pirate.

  10. That’s wonderful. I’ve read The Mouse Book (Mouse finds a house, Mouse finds a friend) over and over, also the Missing Piece Meets the Big O and Snug House, Bug House. And lots of others, but those three jump out at me.

  11. So cute!

When my oldest (now 19) was 2 he had Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Suess memorized… among others that I can’t remember now. But I loved how he had that one totally down. Also, to the younger ones (now 14 and 10) we read Goodnight Moon so many times it fell apart. I can’t remember all the rest. I should ask them sometime and do a post. It would be interesting to see if they remember what we used to read.

  12. Great video – it brought back memories. Our favorite was the Berenstain’s B Book. My oldest figured out how to read from that book. It too fell apart.

I must have tried to leave a message when you were fixing your site. Glad it’s fixed.

  13. Very cute kids! He does do great animal sounds.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear is a very easy one to memorize but it is always a favorite. Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? and Thomas and the School Trip have also been favorites. I remember “reading” Danny and the Dinosaur when I was little. I could say every word.

  14. Lisa – We have Doggies too. I’ve seen the pirates books at the store and they look great!

Jeane – I’ve never heard of those one’s before. My oldest loves the mouse (well, gerbil – he call’s it a mouse) at our library. It’s the first thing he has to see when he goes in. Our librarian takes it out and let’s him pet it.

Suey – We’ve never tried Goodnight Moon before although I know it’s really popular. We do like anything Dr. Suess.

Sharon – Well, thanks for coming back! I seriously hope these people don’t come back for a third time. Ugh. I love Berenstain’s books!

Kim – We went through a stage with Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You? He loved doing the different sounds. He does do great sounds!

  15. Cute!! Great sound effects ;)

A few years ago, Barnyard Dance was a big hit in our house, so was Oh My, Oh My, Oh Dinosaurs! also by Boynton. My girl has that memorized. Goodnight Moon was a favorite as well. Now we really like Olivia and The Pigeon (drives a bus, finds a hotdog).

  16. I don’t have any children but I do remember reading books when I was a kid so many times that I had memorized them. Dr. Seuss especially since the rhyming made it so easy. Oh there was another too, Jillian Jiggs by Phoebe Gilman. I doubt I’ll ever forget: “Jillian, Jillian, Jillian Jiggs! It looks like your room has been lived in by pigs!”

  17. Your video is great – a three year old reading from books and believing he is getting it all right – just the way it should be. I think all moms could take a leaf from your life book.
Reading from memory does help them learn, but it is also important (in my opinion)to introduce new books to keep the learning and interest alive.
My new book for the little ones would do that. Maybe you will look it up one day.

  18. I loved loved loved this!! I hope that when Ethan gets older he will love his book collection I’ve been hoarding for him (right now he just wants to rip out pages!)

  19. They look just like you:) so cute!

    on February 21st, 2009 at 9:21 pm
  20. Chris – We have the dinosaur book too. Never really got into Goodnight Moon. It’s too quiet of a book, I think for my little guys.

Ladytink_534 – Ha, ha! I’ll have to look that one up.

Irene – Thank you so much for your kind words! I will go take a look at your book.

Kristina – Thank you! I must admit this is my favorite video chat so far because I just can’t get enough of them. I’m embarrassed to say how many times I’ve watched it. Maybe another video chat topic would be showing off how many ripped books are in the house. You wouldn’t believe how many pages I’ve ended up throwing away.

Tracy – Really? My littlest one looks more like me but my oldest looks just like my husband. Whenever we go out, I’m never told I look like them. Except for the hair color. Our hair color is identical. If you put them together you wouldn’t be able to tell which was which.

  21. My daughter loves Richard Scarry books, especially “This Is My House.” You can sure spend a lot of time browsing and reading the Scarry books. As far as Boynton goes, we recommend “Blue Hat, Green Hat.” Always good for a laugh.

  22. Natasha, your kids are so cute! Loved this video. Sandra Boynton is huge in this house. My daughter loves her animal books like Barnyard Dance, Moo Ba La La La and Fifteen Animals. She just loves making all the animal sounds. Do you have any of her music books/cds? My son loves them. I am going to have to replace some of our Boynton board books soon because they are all getting a little too much love. They are pretty much shredded. :-)
