Reading and Blogging Review for January
Off to a great 2009! I ended up reading a lot of Middle Grade fiction this month. Short and quick is obviously all I could handle this month. I also decided instead of saying “books read in January” it will be “books reviewed in January.” I know, I know. I get hung up on the slightest little language. But I DO review every single book I read, but I stress at trying to get them all reviewed by the end of the month. I still have three outstanding reviews and I hate to list them without linking them. It looks like I didn’t read much “adult” stuff but all three of those reviews are. And unless I have a huge outrage, I won’t be recommending or ranking them anymore either. Or do you want that? If you do, then I’ll change back. I’d be more than happy. Just testing the waters to see.
Wow, that was liberating. Here’s a recap of what happened this past month here at the Maw Books Blog:

In his honor and for other people who have died or suffered from a heart-related illness, Michelle is hosting a special event for the week of Valentine’s Day.This purpose of the reading event Books for the Heart is to raise money for the American Heart Association and/or to honor a loved one. There are many ways to participate. You can sponsor yourself and donate a certain amount of money for every book you read or every page you read during February 1-14. You can ask for sponsors. You can donate a set amount. You can donate in a loved one’s name. Michelle asks that by participating you commit to donating a minimum of $5 to the American Heart Association. Other than that, you decide on how you’ll participate.
I am going to participate by donating a set amount for every page I read during Feb. 1-14th. If you’d like to participate, visit the post about the event.

- The Kreative Blogger Award from Softdrink at Fizzy Thoughts.
- I’ve been Tink Approved by Jen (aka Ladytink_534) from the Movieholic and Bibliophile’s Blog.
- While not awards, Steph at Reviewer X and Heather at Book Addiction, and Suey at It’s All About Books all said awesome things about me in their Weekly Geeks posts. You ladies are so nice!
I’m a rule breaker and the thought of passing these one, honestly intimidates me. So if you’ve commented on my blog this past month considered yourself bestowed.
Other Items of Note
- I’ve implemented a lot of great new features this past month and thank you so much for your enthusiasm. I’m excited to take this blog to big places this year! If you are wondering how I’m choosing my reader spotlights, I am first going to spotlight my top ten commenters. After that it will be completely random. Also, I would love some ideas of what you’d like to see in the video chats. Anything goes! Tour of the house, garden, kids, bookish ramblings, etc?
- Lots of great stuff happening over at the Blogging Tips group and the Utah Bloggers group at Book Blogs Ning. Lot’s of great advice to help you blog and as a community we’ve helped out at least 13 bloggers improve the layout of their blogs. I’d love to have you join us.
- While I have made a few small changes regarding layout, etc. around here, I have a lot of great changes up my sleeves. So be on the lookout and ignore me if things happen to go a little funny.
- February is looking to be a great month! I’ll have some books reviewed for Black History Month, lots of new releases coming out, Cybils are going to be announced, and at least half a dozen author interviews/guest posts.
- If you aren’t subscribed to the Maw Books Blog why not? Receive updates via email or through your favorite reader. I’d love to go over the 200 subscribers mark. Can’t get enough? Follow me on Twitter.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

Nice wrap-up post. I may “borrow” some your ideas. I haven’t come up with a good way to summarize the month yet.
Thanks again for your help and comments about my blog. I implemented many of the changes you suggested. I hope my blog looks better now.
on February 1st, 2009 at 6:29 amAnother great post Natasha! The time it must take to put this together shows your committment to great blogging.
You know the rating on books, I’ve never done that. For me, it’s enough to know whether you’ve liked it or not or would recommend it if you totally loved it. I find ratings so hard to do for some reason.
The awards-well you totally deserve those! I’m not going to single out people anymore. I read so many good blogs that I’m just going to send to all next time. The only thing I do like is your spotlight on visitors and I think I may do that if you don’t mind anyone stealing your very good ideas. lol.
Have a great Sunday!
on February 1st, 2009 at 11:12 amBeth F. – I’ve found these wrap up post to be really helpful because at the end of the year it’s easy to do my year wrap up post. Also, those who may not follow along all month, will probably sneak a peak at this one post to see if there was anything worth looking at.
Darlene – I used to just rate the books at the end of the month but this month everything seemed to have the same rating. And then what’s the point? As for awards, I would single out individual people if I wrote a post every time an award came in but I try to keep my non-bookish posts down to the bare minimum. And this month was crazy, I would have had to award everyone I know just to keep up with how many I was supposed to award. And as a mom to two small boys I just don’t have the time. I can barely get my other posts up.
on February 1st, 2009 at 11:50 amWow!! you’ve been extremely busy this past month!! I totally enjoy coming to your blog…don’t change a thing!
on February 1st, 2009 at 7:02 pmWhat a fantastic month, Natasha. Even without the links, I love to see what everyone’s reading. I’m behind in my reviewing, too. Driving me crazy!!
on February 1st, 2009 at 7:50 pmI just love the cover of the Mermaid book. I haven’t read it yet but I bought it as soon as I saw the cover.
on February 1st, 2009 at 8:23 pmMan, you must be TIRED. Maybe I’m projecting a little. I’d be tired after that busy of a January! I’ve got the last 8 or so of your posts still waiting for me in Google Reader, I can’t believe you have time to read so much and then post with all the cross referencing links and everything.
I like to know if a reader would recommend a book, but ratings don’t really mean a lot to me.
on February 1st, 2009 at 9:40 pmI’m really impressed with you. Especially with your comment about not having much time to write posts. Your blog always has excellent content, you’re constantly trying to improve this blog and add new things. Well done to you.
on February 2nd, 2009 at 12:42 amCongrats on all the awards..they are well deserved…and can I just say you are much more productive than I am in terms of reading.
on February 3rd, 2009 at 10:20 amp.s. thanks for signing up for the War Through the Generations Challenge!
on February 3rd, 2009 at 10:20 amI’m glad to know that I’m not the only rule breaker when it comes to passing on awards. It’s too hard to pick just a few people when there are so many worthy bloggers out there.
on February 3rd, 2009 at 5:41 pmGreat month! I greatly enjoyed every post! =D
