Video Chat: Talking Book Stacks and Blogger/Indie Bookstore Relations

Welcome to the second edition of the Maw Books Video Chat!  Today, I am sharing the book stacks that I have in the house.  They are towering and they are huge!  I also talk a bit about a new found relationship that I’ve forged with a local independent bookstore in the area.

And, if you make it to the end of the video, there is a surprise for you courtesy my husband and kids (who doesn’t know I’ve posted a video of him).  It’s a special shout out to Jen at Devourer of Books.  I also did the video three times trying to bring it under the 5 minute mark and it just didn’t happen.  Perhaps if I stop saying “um” and “pretty excited” all the time.  I’m still getting the hang of this and still nervous.  I promise to try to cut it down in the future. Also, still figuring out the compression settings. A question.  What topics or things would you like to see in these bi-monthly video chats?  I’d love the ideas.

The bookstore mentioned in the video is The King’s English Bookshop.  They totally rock!  Betsy Burton, the owner, has written a memoir about bookselling called The King’s English.  Do check it out (I am).  What do you think of that whole concept?

By the way, how do you like the new look?  It’s small, but boy did I need the change!  More changes to come (hopefully!).

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. I’ve read the book about The King’s English and loved it!

Sheesh, good luck with all those stacks! I haven’t checked out anything from the library forever it seems. (Except The Graveyard Book!) It stresses me out too much.

    Cute kids! :)

  3. You are so cute! At the end your kids were louder than the rest of it and freaked my husband out from the next room.

  4. Suey – I have too much checked out from the library!

Steph – Thanks! I’m probably smiley because I’m nervous. Will read Jellicoe Road!

Lisa – Freaked me out too! By the way, I’ve been meaning to tell you that my oldest has the same set of pajamas as your littlest one. The one with blue and brown stripes. We have good taste!

  5. You are so cute! And you have a lot of books and was that the Scent of Sake? I want that book!!!! Oh the jealousy.

  6. Amy – That IS the Scent of Sake! I was particularly excited for that one.

  7. You are so organized! I am not.

The kids are so cute. Your little guy freaked my cat out. :)

  8. I’ll second the you ‘must’ read Jellicoe Road :) This is a fun feature. I like all your stacks–and I love to know someone else is just as over-committed as I am :)

  9. Oh, your husband is going to love that you posted that :p

I love this feature Natasha! You should never worry about your videos being too long. Personally, I think the longer the better! I can watch people talk about books all day…especially when there’s stacks and stacks of them! lol. Can’t wait for the next one!

  10. Hunger Games! I am so excited for you to read that. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

  11. Wow. You really are ’super excited’ about so many things! Very cute. And your kids are gorgeous! My husband always lets me use his library card! He has no say in the matter, of course!

  12. I also love the video chats – it’s great putting a face to a blogger and I think we all love hearing about books. I wouldn’t worry about them being too long. I’m kind of jealous about your stack of ARCs from The King’s English Bookshop! Wish I had an indie near me.

Also, your kids are adorable. =)

  13. Like the change. It’s nice. We stopped by The King’s English a couple years ago when we were in SLC visiting, and none of us — not my girls, not my husband, not me — wanted to leave. It’s such a charming place. You are so lucky to be living nearby.

  14. Loved your video chat. It makes everything so much more personal. Great job on your relationship with The King’s English.

I bet your husband is thrilled have danced on your blog!

  15. Chris – I’m not as organized as you think. But I do have my piles!

Becky – That’s my problem. Over committed! Let’s hope that I make it through February.

Chris – Oh good. I’m glad you watched the whole thing! I seriously did it three times. Sometimes my mind just comes up a blank when I’m talking. I’m sure that I’ll get better as I go along.

Lenore – When my book club leader found out that I was number 50 at the library, she let me borrow it. I hear it’s good – like EVERYWHERE!

Michelle – I’m way “super excited!” My husbands library card is in my wallet. He hates that! I can’t wait until my kids are old enough to get a card!

Meghan – Thanks. I wish you had an indie near you as well.

Melissa – I’m so happy that you’ve been there! My little boy broke a glass item while we were there. It’s at times like that that you want to leave. So actually, those ARC’s cost me $14.

  16. Beth F. – My husband watched it when he got home from work. He didn’t mind! LOL. This is the guy who dressed up as joker for Halloween and wanted to post a video of it!

  17. The new blog layout is really good! The lighter colour works well & having both sidebars on one side is great — puts the focus back on your post content. I like it.

  18. I enjoyed your book chat! I just started the potato peel book – I really like it so far. And I have a copy of the King’s English; there are some great lists in it. Lucky you to get to go there all the time. Oh, and I use all my families library cards, too!

  19. So jealous of the ARCs! I’ve only been the King’s English once, but it was delightful (helped that I was getting books signed by Shannon Hale…) And yes, if you had them checked out before they were chosen as winners, it counts (only because I had Graveyard checked out as well…)

  20. What an awesome video Natasha! Those book stacks look so familiar. Before I forget, the new look is great. For a laugh, my dog never likes when I turn up the volume on the computer so while I was watching the kids do the happy dance I didn’t expect your little one to add a little singing so of course I had the volume on high. Needless to say Buddy was doing a happy dance around the house. It was hilarious.

  21. What fun!

  22. I think I’ve been to King’s English once in college. I might have even been buying books for a class or something.

  23. I love these videos!! I don’t care how long they are either, I could watch anyone talk about books all day! I have a question about all those books in the shelves behind you, do you keep everything you read? Or are those unread? I think your kids are adorable!

  24. That was a great video. I loved the book stacks. That is a ton of reading next month. My husband would love to be the star of a video on my blog…he’s always acting funny.

    Have a great weekend.

  25. I will have to check out The King’s English if I am ever in the SLC area again. It has been years and we always talk about going out there for a visit but never do.
I love books stacks! Sometimes I will just sit down and go through my stacks and then get all giddy with excitement in anticipation of reading them. (I need to get out more, perhaps?)
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but you only get 10 holds and 30 items out? I couldn’t survive! I don’t think I have a hold limit. If I do I’ve never hit it yet. One library I go lets me check out 100 items. The other only 50 but you can renew 5 times. I love my libraries! :-)
