Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl

I read Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl for my Children’s Literature Book Club. This month we read books being made into movies.  Fantastic Mr. Fox is being made into an animated film with big names such as George Clooney, Bill Murray, and Anjelica Huston.  It’s slated to be released in November of this year.  I’d love to see how adapt Fantastic Mr. Fox to film.

From the book jacket:

Every evening as soon as it got dark, Mr. Fox would say to Mrs. Fox, “Well, my darling, what shall it be this time?  A plump chicken from Boggis? A duck or a goose from Bunce?  Or a nice turkey from Bean?”  And when Mrs. Fox had told him what she wanted, Mr. Fox would creep down into the valley in the darkness of the night and help himself.

Boggis and Bunce and Bean knew very well what was going on, and it made them wild with rage.  They were not men who liked to give anything away.  Less still did they like anything to be stolen from them.  So every night each of them would take his shotgun and hide on his own farm, hoping to catch the robber.

But Mr. Fox was too clever for them.

The three farmers are true villains that decide that anything must be done to catch Mr. Fox, this includes digging out the entire hillside in search of him. The other animals aren’t pleased with Mr. Fox though.  His escapades and the farmers stakeout are hurting their way of life.  Will Mr. Fox be sly enough to come up with a clever plan to please his friends and keep the farmers at bay?

Fantastic Mr. Fox was a fun, cute story told in Roald Dahl’s classic irreverent humor.  I enjoyed this quick read and it would be a perfect book to read-a-loud with younger readers.

  1. Ooh,thanks for the reminder! I used to love this book when I was young and it’s one Roald Dahl that is absent from my children’s bookshelves, and therefore hasn’t been shared with them. I’ll have to find it at the library tomorrow :)

  4. Cool about the movie! I own a whole collection of Roald Dahl books, but on a whim I checked out the audio version for the kids in the car. It was a collection of 5 or so stories and every day it was, “No….don’t turn the car off yet!”

  5. Jupiter – Somehow I made it through childhood without ever reading any of Roald Dahl. So they are all new to me!

Charley – I have the BFG, but haven’t read it yet.

    S. Krishna – I’m discovering him for the first time this past year.

Jenn M. – I think the movie will turn out great. I’m sure the audios of these are fantastic. Quick enough books to hold their attention.

  6. The audios are read by Roal Dahl himself which makes them even better.

  10. I used to love this book! (Still do, I suppose…) I didn’t know they were making it into a movie. With actors like that, at least it sounds like they’re putting in effort to make it good!

  11. Roald Dahl was such a favorite of mine as a kid. I could not even tell you how many time I read Matilda.
That said, I never read this one. I will have to do so, especially is they are making it into a movie.

  12. The Fantastic Mr Fox…

Currently, it feels like Hollywood movies that are based on novels are better than the other ones. There are action movies, suspense movies and all other types of movies that you can think of but movies based on literary work are truly amazing. Amongst…
