Wake by Lisa McMann
I read Wake by Lisa McMann in one sitting, it’s unlike anything I’ve read before. And it’s another paranormal romance, a genre that I still can’t quite believe I’ve read so much of this year, once I realized exactly what a paranormal romance was.
Life, for seventeen-year-old Janie is one where she must never let her guard down. Ever since she was little, she has always been sucked into other people’s dreams. And now that she’s in high school, where more kids sleep in class, it’s harder to make things appear normal. Every time she’s a witness to somebody else’s dreams she herself goes into a dreamlike state, and if it’s a nightmare, she’s thrown into seizures. She learns a lot about people through their dreams, who has a fear of being naked in front of a group, who’s dreaming about having sex with somebody else. Sometimes it’s amusing, other times, it’s anything but.
One day, Janie is a witness to one the worst nightmare she’s ever seen. It’s horrifying. The thing is she doesn’t know who’s dream it is, so when she finds out it’s her new found crush, Cabel, she’s confused. Especially, when he begins dreaming about her. Does she trust him enough to tell him her secret? And will she be able to gain control of her gift (or is it a curse?).
Wake is written in short episode like chunks and makes for the perfect quick read to curl up on the couch with. I thought it was fun and I think it definitly has teen appeal. I thought some of the premise regarding Cabel’s job seemed a bit unreal and forced. I had a hard time swallowing it, but it’s this job that I suspect will take center stage in the sequal Fade which comes out this February. I will definitly be continuing on with this series to see where Janie takes us.

I’m not sure that paranormal romance is for me, but this sounds intriguing.
on December 30th, 2008 at 10:28 pmWhat Charley said. So, what’s the creepiness factor? Is it scary at all?
on December 31st, 2008 at 1:08 amI loved this book. It’s really not scary at all. I love the paranormal romance genre. Although I like it to be heavier on the the paranormal than the romance. I agree with your take on Cabel’s job it was a little to much but it was just a device to get Janie to realize her potential and use in the next book. I can’t wait for Fade.

on December 31st, 2008 at 12:42 pmCharley – If somebody had told me that I’d be reading paranormal romance, I would have said, “What? What’s that?”
Ali – No, it’s not scary. No creepiness factor. More of a mystery I guess.
Shannon – I can’t wait for Fade either. And agree that the job was used as a device to carry the story further.
S. Krishna – You’re welcome!

on March 10th, 2009 at 6:35 pmWas not impressed by this book. The swearing and other stuff bothered me too much. I cant believed that this was classified as a YA book at the libarary. I wouldnt want my teen reading it. I finished it but I’m not interested in the sequel.
on April 4th, 2009 at 3:45 pmI read this one last night for the read-a-thon. It was great for that, but not what I expected (I expected more scary/creepiness) and I thought didn’t live up to what it COULD have been. I’ll do a real review last this week, but I wanted to see what everyone else thought too.
