Room for a Little One, A Christmas Tale by Martin Waddell
Room for a Little One, A Christmas Tale by Martin Waddell and illustrated by Jason Cockcroft is beautiful. It’s Christmas Eve on a cold winter’s night. Kind Ox lays in the stable and welcomes all who needs a warm spot in which to lie. He welcomes the Old Dog, who welcomes the Stray Cat, who welcomes the Small Mouse. All are nestled down in the hay when Tired Donkey arrives with Mary and Joseph. “Come inside,” says Kind Ox. “There’s always room for a litle one here.” And so Jesus was born in the warmth of a stable with the kind and lowly animals all around.
Room for a Little One is a lovely retelling of the nativity story. I love how it illustrates that there is always room at the inn for another little one. That Jesus was born amongst the most humble of circumstances. The illustrations by Jason Cockcroft give the book a magical, other worldly feel. It was absolutely beautiful to read. I would love to own this as the board book for the small hands in our home.

on December 24th, 2008 at 12:17 amI love this book! But I don’t know about the board book; I loved how large and encompassing the pictures were. I haven’t seen the board book, but I would imagine it would take away some of the majesty of the beautiful illustrations!

Rebecca – The picture book was beautiful. It’s true board books are always less than stellar but it’s either that or risk ripped out and torn pages at our house!
