A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree by Colleen Monroe

A Wish to be a Christmas Tree by Colleen Monroe and illustrated by Michael Glenn Monroe is a touching story of the power of friendship to lift another’s spirits.  Each year families would come to the Christmas tree farm to choose the perfect tree.  One of those trees has no other wish but to be taken home and loved.  But he’s grown too big and too tall and he knows that nobody would want him.  His heart is full of grief and sorrow.  But his woodland friends love him very much and desire to make his wish of becoming a Christmas tree come true.  So while he sleeps they decorate him with berries, nuts, and garland.  When he awakens they tell him that he is more than just a Christmas tree, he is special each day of the year simply because he is always near.   The message of this Christmas story is:

With that they gathered around the tree
and suddenly the tree could see,
it wasn’t as important to be a Christmas tree,
but to always be the best friend you could be.

I read this book to my three year old and while I couldn’t get through any of the text, he enjoyed looking at the illustrations, which were great.  So I would suggest it for maybe ages 4-8.  It’s a cute story with a good message about how perhaps what we’ve always wanted is right in front of us and the importance of helping a friend in need.

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. I love this book, too. My friends gave it to the girls a couple of years ago. They love the illustrations and the story. My husband, however, hates the story. It’s too sappy for him. Interestingly enough, I’ve not been able to find this book this year. I think I know who the culprit is…
