My Losing Streak is Now Officially Over!! New Book Arrivals

Until about two months ago, I could say with 100% certainty that I had never won a single thing on a blog.  Ever.  I’d see books that I liked, leave a comment, hope to win.  I don’t enter everything I see.  I’m pretty picky about what I put my name in for.  So what that translates into is the fact that I actually wanted to win.  But 100% of the time, I would lose.  After about 10 months, I was seriously wondering where all of my luck was and resigning myself to the fact that winning books on blogs was just a thing not meant for someone with the likes of me.

Well, I’m now happy to announce that my losing days are over!!

It all started when I won a lovely bookmark from Dewey at A Hidden Side of a Leaf.  I couldn’t believe it!  My first prize.

And then a couple of weeks later, Amy at My Friend Amy held a giveaway on Twitter in honor of BBAW to the first few people who DM’d her.  And she sent me not one, but two books!  (You are on Twitter aren’t you?  Seriously, there is this entire back conversation with book bloggers that I didn’t even know was going on.  But now I’m in the know how.  Follow me).  I was sent A Tale Out of Luck by Willie Nelson and An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination, A Memoir by Elizabeth McCracken.  Both look good.

Right after that I was ecstatic to win a book from Jessica at Bluestocking Society from her Lit Flicks Challenge.  She sent me Atonement by Ian McEwan, which is on my challenge list and I happened to have checked out from the library when I received it.  Back to the library with that copy, I have my own!  Now, I just need to sit down and read it.

I was getting giddy. I won stuff!   But then it got better!  Jen at Devourer of Books held her awesome 100th Review giveaway and I won not one, not two, but three more books!  The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, which I’m really excited about after it’s rave reviews.  I had this on hold at the library, I gladly canceled it.  Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay which I had just finished reading when I received this copy.  I’m very happy to have my own copy for my personal library!  This one is one worth having!  One can never have to many books can they?  And The River, By Moonlight by Camille Marchetta (I may already have this one in my review pile.  I’ll have to check, if so I’d like to pass it on when I review it.  Keep spreading the love!)  Thanks Jen!

After that I was seriously thinking, wow, I can’t believe I’ve actually won something!  How long could it last?  Apparently, just a little longer because I snagged one of Hatchette’s Spooktacular Box of Books giveaway from Rebecca at Rebecca Reads! That alone was something like 10 books!  After this, I thought I was tired of Halloween.  But now I can’t wait to dig into these next year for some themed reading around Halloween time.  They are:  THE HERETIC’S DAUGHTER By Kathleen Kent, ISOLATION By Travis Thrasher, THE 13 BEST HORROR STORIES OF ALL TIME By Leslie Pockell, THE MONSTERS: Mary Shelley and the Curse of Frankenstein By Dorothy Hoobler and Thomas Hoobler, THE MYRTLES PLANTATION: The True Story of America’s Most Haunted House By Frances Kermeen, Ghostly Encounters: True Stories of America’s Haunted Inns and Hotels By Frances Kerm, THE TERROR By Dan Simmons, DRACULA By Bram Stoker, WHEN GHOSTS SPEAK: Understanding the World of Earthbound Spirits By Mary Ann Winkowski, and THE HISTORIAN By Elizabeth Kostova (my husband was really excited for this one, when he saw it he said, “Hey – this is the book I want to read!!”).

How cool is all of that?  Cool.

Thanks all!!  I can now confidently say that I have now won something from a blog!  Yay!

  1. (Your post is giving me a freaky message telling me to not be shy and to leave a comment. So here it is.)

Congrats! I’m glad I could add to your winning streak. I have to say, one of your giveaways was the first I ever won a book from a blog. so just returning the favor.*

(*Actually the winner was chosen by random.org, but I can pretend, can’t I?)

  2. Rebecca – Are you on a different computer than normal? That freaky message has encouraged more than one lurker to leave a comment! It can tell how many times somebody has come from an IP address and has not left a comment yet. Thanks for the books!

  3. (No same computer. I think maybe the network resets or something. Our internet was super slow for a day or two but now it’s back to normal. I don’t know how this works….)

  4. Fabulous!! I find that mine comes in spurts. I won’t win or get anything for a while and then it will all come in a wave. Although, I rarely enter giveaways anymore–just can’t keep up with the books!! I’m drowning here. ;)

Enjoy the spooky books–some great ones in that stack!!

  5. Congratulations! Winning is so much fun, isn’t it!

  6. I really wanted that spooktacular box of books so I’m jealous. :) I hope you enjoy the loot! I won quite a bit when I started, but I haven’t won anything in a long time.

  7. Congratulations! I have The Historian on my To Read list….my friend has it, and I am waiting for her to finish!!

Actually…you won quite a few books I’ve wanted to read. Congrats again and good luck on your future entries!

  8. That’s cool. I like winning, but so far have only won a book from you and a $10 gift card to Target from Supermomcentral (dot) com. I didn’t get the gift card though, the girl forgot to send it (even after I reminded her it didn’t come). Then she just moved so I have given up hopes of receiving that. Oh well.

  9. Oops, that address was supermomcentral.blogspot.com. In case anyone wants to visit. It is a blog for mom’s. She has contests every week, and other good tips.
Sorry, I know this has nothing to do with books.

  10. Wow! That’s quite a haul. Good for you. There’s nothing like getting new books except getting them free. Keep up the winning streak – except when I’ve entered the same drawing!

  11. Wow sounds like you have the same horseshoe I have lately! I’ve won over 18 books in the past month alone! Including the Hatchette books you won. Congrats and enjoy!

  12. Wow! That is incredibly awesome. I’m a little jealous :)

  13. That’s amazing! Congratulations!

I had a winning streak like that when I started blogging, but over the past few weeks it’s been a dry spell. Almost like a message from above saying “you have too many unread books already.” Not that it’s going to stop me from trying to get more! :)

I remember the first time I saw the message to comment (the one Rebecca thought was creepy) and it startled me the first time too. Obviously it worked though, ’cause here I am.

  14. Wow! Congrats. It seems to come in waves sometimes. :) All at once or none at all. Enjoy all your reading. :)

  15. Congratulations on all the wins.
I’m here saying hi from the Comment Challenge.

And I just followed you on twitter.

  16. I think your good luck rubbed off on me. I just went over to Confuzzled Books and found out I won! Woohoo! So much for the dry spell. :)

  17. Rebecca – Neither do I! The message should only show if you’ve visited at least five times but have never left a comment.

Trish – I don’t enter all of them, that’s for sure. Just the ones I want.

Kathy – Thanks. I’m basking in my good luck as this is the first time I’ve experienced it.

Jenn M. – I got some good ones, didn’t I? I can’t wait to start the Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Society (that’s a tongue twister!).

amy BTW M – I freely admit that it takes me a while sometimes to make it to the post office, but that sucks to not get it at all.

booklogged – We’ll just have to make sure we don’t enter the same ones.

Callista – 18! Congrats to you!

Janssen – I’ve been jealous for ten months! Glad it was finally my turn!

Alyce – I have way to many books to read too! I’m glad that message got you here! I like having you around! And congrats on your win as well!

Mari – I guess that means I’m due for another dry streak.

Steven – Yay! You are actually my first commenter from that challenge. I hope you find enough here to come back often!

  18. With all the giving away you do it’s about time you won something I’d say! Congrats!

(And I’m happy to be your Twitter friend as of this very day!)

  19. Congrats! That’s awesome. And speaking of winning: I just received my Darfur Awareness prize in the mail this afternoon! I can’t wait to start listening to my first-ever audiobook! Thanks Natasha :-)

  20. Hooray for you! I just received my first book blog prize also…The Kitchen God’s Wife, from you! Maybe it’s the beginning of a streak for me, too.

  21. Wow! That’s quite a good haul!

As to Twitter, I am really avoiding joining in on Twitter, simply because I already spend a lot of time on the computer on forums and blogging! If I Twittered as well, I would never move away from this chair! But now I feel as though I am missing out by not being there!

  22. Congratulations on your winnings! Fun, fun, fun! I hope they all bring many hours of pleasure. :)

  23. Awesome!

  24. I just got my Darfur prize from you this morning. Okay, it came yesterday, but I had a headache last night and went to bed. My husband woke me up at 10 or so and said, “hey, you got this book in the mail!” and wanted to know if I wanted to open it then and there. Yah, not so much.

I hope you enjoy all of your new books!

  25. I won 2 books once, which was cool. And a website I’m a member of (bookbrowse.com) gave me an advanced reading copy of a book, so that was cool too. I love the bookmark!

    on November 11th, 2008 at 10:31 am
  26. Holy cow! That’s a whole lot of winning!

    on November 11th, 2008 at 11:13 am
  27. Woohoo! That is a nice haul. I’ve won book giveaways twice but I rarely enter them anyway. I’ve probably only entered 4-5 and won twice so I guess I have a pretty good record for winning. :-)
