Abandoned Book, X-Indian Chronicles by Thomas Yeahpau
I was excited to read X-Indian Chronicles by Thomas Yeahpau for the A-Z challenge hosted by Joy (see my entire list here) So I was sad when I didn’t make it past page 54. The language was just too much. Those X-Indians have quite the potty mouth. I can handle a moderate amount of foul language but when I just glance at a page I can see at least 6-7 swears. Very distracting. And I hate those words floating around my head.
For those of you interested in X-Indian Chronicles, according to the publisher: Mausape belongs to a race that is losing its culture and to a generation that is losing its mind. In stories and poems mixing magical realism with unflinching reality, a young American Indian author offers a raw, graphic view of life on a reservation.
The premise sounded really great. Too bad I’ll be returning this one. Instead, I think I’ll try reading X in Flight by Karen Rivers, a Young Adult novel about a 17 year old boy who finds out he has a special power. Sounds almost like a episode of Heroes. Let’s see how that one goes.
What makes you tick? What makes you stop reading a book?
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

I tend to put books down when they have too many graphic sexual situations, have a premise I find lame, or if they just plain bore me. Out of the 167 books I've read this year, I've only abandoned 7.
on October 10th, 2008 at 9:48 pmI don't like a lot of potty mouth language either; however, I can read it more than I can listen to it because I can skim the words and not take them in when reading. Taking a glance and seeing 6 – 7 words – I think I may have dumped it, too! Hope the next one is better.
on October 11th, 2008 at 5:11 amI don't mind some foul language if it fits the story and the characters but I've read some books where it just seems to be thrown in there for no reason. I haven't stopped reading a book in a while, but when I do, it's usually because I just can't get into it and find my mind wandering while I'm reading it.
on October 11th, 2008 at 6:23 amLanguage doesn't make me stop reading, or even sex. I stop when I notice the writing, in a bad way. If the author is trying to hard to have beautiful writing, and it just clunks.
You might try The X in Sex: How the X Chromosome Controls Our Lives for your X book. I know you don't like books with sex in them, but I think this one is more about how our bodies are different from men, in a scientific way. I haven't read it, but someone else did. Trish, maybe, and I'm not sure which Trish at that!
on October 11th, 2008 at 6:31 pmA lot of cussing doesn't bother me but there are a few that I really don't like. It's hard to say what makes me give up on a book but I do know I don't enjoy being lectured or preached at when I read!

on October 11th, 2008 at 8:59 pmHm. Lots of things can make me stop reading a book. Bad writing. Boring story. Characters I just don't care about. Incessant swearing or gratuitous s-x scenes will do it too.
on October 11th, 2008 at 9:00 pmWell, I'd never give up on a book because of swearing, but I have wanted to give up on a few Palahniuk books because of the sheer gross disgustingness. Mostly what makes me give up on books is bad writing or just not being able to care about the characters or what's happening to them.
on October 12th, 2008 at 5:02 pmLadytink_534 – I know what you mean about a few choice words that you can't stand. Feels like nails on a chalkboard whenever they come up.
on October 13th, 2008 at 2:50 pmhmm. yeah. not big on the swearing. if the book doesn’t hold my interest at all then i can’t read it. i won’t even skip ahead. nope.
on October 26th, 2008 at 4:30 pmThe Book Of Muasape Onthaw is a GREAT book. I read it in a couple hours. I didn’t want to put it down. A little swearing didn’t stop me from reading.
