Second-Grade Pig Pals by Kirby Larson

Book Cover: Second Grade Pig PalsSecond-Grade Pig Pals by Kirby Larson is one of her first books, first published in 1994.  It was really fun to read this one knowing that she’d soon hit her stride and win a Newbery Honor for Hattie Big Sky, which I which I absolutely loved.

From the cover: To celebrate National Pig Day, Quinn and her second-grade classmates are taking all kinds of piggy things to school to display in the classroom’s Pig Patch. Too many pigs can drive a kid crazy, but Quinn is excited anyway – there’s a new girl named Manuela in the class, and Quinn wants to be her best friend. Quinn and Manuela’s friendship takes off quickly, then hits a snag because of a misunderstanding. Can the two girls solve their problems and still make second grade “pig perfect?”

The illustrations seemed really dated to me although it isn’t that old.  They could have been much better.   With that small snag, Second-Grade Pig Pals was a quick fun read, but honestly, one that I’ll probably forget quickly.  Still, I won’t hesitate picking up Cody and Quinn Sitting in a Tree, its sequel.  Second-Grade Pig Pals did an excellent job emulating the relationship between two young girls, at a time in their lives when small, simple things seem really huge and how easily one can become friends, fall out of being friends and being friends again.  Almost reminded me of being back in second grade again, although I don’t think I was so lucky to have a pig in school.

Kirby Larson will be joining us tomorrow for an awesome author interview.  Don’t miss it!

  1. Thanks for the reminder of Hattie Big Sky. I have that on my TBR list, but needed that little push to get in on my 2009 list.

  7. I’ve been meaning to see if my library has this book. I’ve been curious about Kirby Larson’s other books since reading Hattie Big Sky. (One of my favorite books read this year.)
