Dinosaur Books for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers

Dinosaur Roar by Paul & Henrietta StricklandBook Cover: Ten Terrible DinosaursOne of my kids favorite books (well, actually mine) about dinosaurs is Dinosaur Roar! by Paul & Henrietta Strickland.  It’s a fun little board book about opposites with really fun and creative illustrations.  Dinosaur roar, dinosaur squeak, dinosaur fierce, dinosaur meek, dinosaur fast, dinosaur slow, dinosaur above and dinosaur below . . . plus more.  I’d love to check out the other book in this series, Ten Terrible Dinosaurs, but haven’t had a chance yet.  My almost three year old struggles with counting to ten, so we may have to check this one out sooner than later.Book Cover: FlapdoodleBook Cover: Dinosaur Stomp

One of our favorite pop-up books about dinosaurs is Dinosaur Stomp! A Monstor Pop Up also by Paul Strickland. When we go to the library, my little guy makes a beeline for the hamsters and then for the pop-up books where we always read Dinosaur Stomp!  Another great pop-up book is Flapdoodle Dinosaur by David A. Carter.  Our library also has this one and my little guy loves it.

And of course, let’s not forget Jane Yolen’s wonderful series about dinosaurs which includes How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms?, How Do Dinosaurs Count to Ten?, How Do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food?, How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?, How Do Dinosaurs Go to School?, How Do Dinosaurs Learn to Read?, How Do Dinosaurs Learn Their Colors?, How Do Dinosaurs Play With Their Friends? and How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?  I’d love to own all of these!  The illustrations by Mark Teague are great.

Book Cover: My Big Dinosaur BookAnother one of my kids favorite series of books is anything by Paul Priddy.  These are the books that my 16 month old ALWAYS pulls out first.  He’s got a great picture book about dinosaurs called My Big Dinosaur Book that feature large bold pictures that will help your child learn their dinosaur names.Book Cover: That's Not My Dinosaur

Another great series that my kids love is the Usborne Touchy-feely books where babies can feel different textures.  Their favorite is That’s Not My Train and That’s Not My Puppy.  The dinosaur book in this series is That’s Not My Dinosaur by Fiona Watt.  My little guy loves to find the little mouse on each page.

Book Cover: Oh My Oh My Oh DinosaursLast but not least, let’s don’t forget Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! by Sandra Boynton.  You can count on some great illustrations and quirky humor.

These books are all listed in the Maw Books Amazon store.

So why the dinosaur books?  Because we went to the dinosaur museum this past month!  $2 Tuesdays in August makes it a price hard to pass up.  We went twice.  Once with grandma and grandpa and again with friends.  There they got to see dinosaurs up close, dig for bones and play with sand and water on the erosion table.  Let’s just hope they do the $2 Tuesday promotion again soon because they had a BLAST!

Dinosaur & Little Boy Dinosaur & Little Baby

And tell me.  That little one on the right?  Boy or girl?  Because apparently HE is being called a girl everywhere we go even though I always dress him like a boy.  Even with the camo shorts, he’s confused for a girl.  Sigh . . .

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. How do you possibly read everything you do with those two cuties?

The Pirate loved Dinosaurs for a long while, but seems to have gotten over it. We have most of the ones you mention, his favorite being the Priddy. I LOVE hearing 2 year olds say “Parasauralophus” or however it’s spelled. In fact, I think I’ll do a dinosaur book hunt tonight to refresh his memory (and hopefully get us OFF the pirates for an evening!)

  3. There is a newish (I am not sure how long it has been out) book called When Dinosaurs Came with Everything by Elise Broach. I think it is a fun book to read and my son really likes it.

  4. My four year old son loves Dinosaur Roar! It was one of the fabulous freebies from our local library. I don’t remember which event, but each year they have “Trick-or-Read” and “Book Bingo” events with free books.

Your son is a cutie! My son had that problem too at one point (being mistaken for a girl). I just figure it’s because we have beautiful boys! :)

  5. We’ve been reading and enjoying Dinosaur Roar! too. It’s been a long time favorite here. We’re also fans of the How Do Dinosaurs… series by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague.

  6. I have read Ten Terrible Dinosaurs and it is really cute. I kids liked it too. :) One of the first books I ever read by myself as a child was Danny and the Dinosaur and I loved it (I actually didn’t read it, just recited the words because I had memorized it). I’m not sure what it is but most kids seem to love dinosaurs. Thank goodness they don’t usually watch Jurassic Park when they’re little.

  7. Have you tried Hudson Talbott’s We’re Back! series? The first one was made into an animated film: We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story, Going Hollywood! A Dinosaur’s Dream, & Your Pet Dinosaur- An Owner’s Manual.

    Definitely a boy.

  11. Natasha, my daughter had no hair until she was about two…just peach fuzz. I seriously had people come up, more than once and ask me why I was dresssing my baby boy in pink. Some people just shouldn’t be allowed to think without some sort of filter installed.

i have to share this here because you obviously have taught your boys to love and respect books as well. At our trip to the library today my daughter picked out a small chapter books she wanted and started to thumb through it. She gasps, turns to me and says, “mommy, someone was disrespectful to this book!” She was visibly upset about it and asked if she could go find the librarian, who kindly thanked her for knowing the right way to treat books. Just thought it was funny and I’d share. :)

  12. Great list. And, what cute boys – I don’t think the boy on the right looks remotely like a girl.

I left you an award over at my blog if you want to check it out.

  14. These are cute book covers. Don’t think I want to find out how how they eat though, just in case people are on the menu.

  15. Oh, I LOVE Dinosaur Roar. I was helping my kids clean their rooms last night (I was doing most of the work, of course), and I came across it stuck in a toybox. My babies are a little beyond the board book phase (6 and 10), and I can’t help feeling a little nostalgic about it.

Oh, and HE’s adorable so handsome!!
