Woe is Me, I’m Computerless

Oh, sigh . . . I hadn’t realized how much I depended upon the computer and the internet. I have officially been without a computer for the past couple of days and it seems that we need to buy a new one. Ours was getting old, slow, and it finally bit the dust. I’m at my husband’s office, so I can post this message and so we can get online and order a new one. We even got a babysitter just so we could go get online. How’s that for a fun Saturday night?

So what does this mean? This means I really should have taken my own advice and prepared some posts for a week such as this one, but I don’t have anything ready to go up. So this means for perhaps the next few days or maybe a week I’ll be lucky to get anything put up (depends upon how much I can type in the half hour alloted to me at the public library), I’ll be slow in responding to comments, and I’ll be unable to visit any book blogs. I don’t want you to think that I’m ignoring my blog, your comments, and most importantly, your blogs. I just won’t be able to visit.  I’m going through withdrawals already!  Thank you for your continual support, kind words, and some recent awards that I’ll be passing on as soon as I can.

In the meantime, make sure to enter my current giveaway where I am giving away two books of your choice to four people. That’s eight books! To tell you the truth, I’m kind of saddened. I was really hoping that this giveaway would be doing better than it is, but I’ve only got ten entries so far. Why did I wish it was doing better? Because it’s about Darfur and well the people in Darfur need all the help they can get. Simply by entering, you’re making a small difference by increasing awareness. And that’s what they need right now.  And well, I need to clear out some books.  So hop on over and take a look. And trust me, the quiz is super, super easy!

Since I won’t be blogging for the next week, I’ll be reading. I’ve got seven books waiting for reviews (now I’m wishing they were written already), ten books checked out from the library and I stayed up till 2 am last night because I could not put down Escape by Carolyn Jessop, a memoir about being married to a polygamist. My second book this month on that topic, as I also read Shattered Dreams by Irene Spencer.  Her book was so completely fascinating and utterly disturbing that I had to read another one and it’s equally as disturbing.  I’m also in the middle of We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families by Phillip Gourevitch. I’ve got Maus and Maus II by Art Spiegelman lined up as well as Story of a Girl by Sara Zarr (Sweethearts is one that’s waiting for a review).  I’ve had Atonement by Ian McEwan checked out from the library for months and will soon be reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho for my neighborhood book club.

Since I can’t go blog hopping at the moment, what are you reading right now?  Do you like it?

Oh, and guess what? My subscribe to comments?! I swear it’s working now! The php mail server was rebuilt and people are now receiving follow up comments! YAY! So excited!

Have a great weekend . . . off to look at new computers.

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. Bummer!! But fun that you get a new computer! I’ve been out of a computer for about 3 months now so I feel your pain :( I’ve been having to use my mom’s. I just finished reading the Translator, so I think it’s great that you’re trying to get people involved in Darfur knowledge! Amazing book…just reviewed it yesterday. Hope your computer woes are fixed soon Natasha!!

  2. I just finished Shattered Dreams and I read Escape not that long ago. I have also read about 4 more books (one by another of the wives of the man that the author of Shattered Dreams was married to… uh. did that make sense?) written by former polygamist wives as well as one autobiography of a woman who lived in polygamy her whole life (in the early 1900s). It is really fascinating!

I hope your computer gets fixed soon.

  3. Oh, ouch!! In a week I’ll be going to my parents’ for 12 days, and they just have dial-up that takes FOREVER. I am so spoiled! But I do always get a ton of reading done at their house!

  4. Boo, being computer-less is no fun at all. I can’t believe that only 10 people have entered your contest! I don’t even care if I win, because I have soooo much to read right now (like 25 books just for review), but I think this is such an important contest that I wanted to be part of it.

To answer your question: I just finished “Glimmer Palace,” which I really enjoyed, about a girl growing up in Berlin. It spans from before WWI to the lead-up of WWII. I’m also reading “Great Peacemakers” and I just started “Aberrations,” although it is too early to tell about that, I’ve heard good things.

  6. Follow up comments ARE working!! :) I hope you get things squared away with the computer soon–I can completely imagine how frustrating that would be!

I’m sorry that the contest isn’t going better–if I didn’t already own 95% of the books I’d definitely enter. Of course, I’ve gotten my fair share of book booty from you in the past (um, that sounds kind of bad…). ;)

I hope you like Atonement–its one of the best books I read this year. I’m currently reading Water Keep (for the Far World tour) and really enjoying it.

    Have a great week!

  8. You know you might even enjoy a little bit of time offline. I was offline for about two weeks before, during, and after my vacation and I enjoyed the break. It made me more refreshed when I got back into the swing of things :-)

I am sorry to hear your computer’s broken. I hope you get a new one or get the old one fixed!

  9. Oh, good excuse to get a new one and you will love it! I would enter too but I already own all the books you are giving away. I own way too many books! I have Shattered Dreams, I will have to get around to it now after what you said:) Have a fun time shopping:)

    Enjoy your reading time.

  13. No computer = not fun! You’ll get some great reading time, though.

Let’s see, what am I reading… I’m rereading Athansius’ “On the Incarnation”. I picked it up again just to read the fabulous introduction by C.S. Lewis (”On the Reading of Old Books”), but I decided to reread the entire thing. I’m also reading “Jane Austen: Her Life and Letters. A Family Record”, by William Austen-Leigh and Richard Arthur Austen-Leigh (two of her nephews). I’m really enjoying it.

    http://stores.lulu.com/stephenjhill

Stephen J. Hill’s, “The Music City Madman”, an imaginative, and highly entertaining novel or terror & suspense. Follow FBI special agent, Mark Peterson and local detective Wayne Tilson on a twisted and unexpected path as they hunt for this fiendishly clever serial killer who’s striking a chord of terror into the heart of the country music industry. America’s city of country queens is frozen in shock and the madman has plans for them all. The chill will be felt down your spine as Stephen J. Hill immerses you into a fiction without end, wrapped inside a killer’s delusion.
