The Host by Stephenie Meyer
I finished reading The Host by Stephenie Meyer a couple of weeks ago and I still don’t know if I have my thoughts together on it. Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, tries her hand in the adult forum. I’m sure many of us asked ourselves, can she do it? Can she weave a story without Edward or Bella in it? My answer? Yes, I think she can and did.
But (yes, there is a but), I do think The Host was a good 150 pages too long and too wordy. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary descriptions and I wish it was cut down. A lot. In fact, when I reached the part where they arrived in the caves (if you’ve read it, you know what I mean, if you haven’t well then, I’m sure you soon will) I actually put the book down for about four days without picking it back up. I even asked my neighbor (ALL of my neighbors have read it) if the characters ever get out of the caves and when does the story pick up? She assured me that they do and it will. She was right and once I crossed that hurdle I quickly finished up the book. In fact, I stayed up way to late and once I turned the last page, I looked at the clock to find it was 2:30 in the morning.
I read somewhere the tag line of The Host being “Science Fiction for those who don’t like Science Fiction.” Which would actually be me because to tell you the truth, I haven’t read much science fiction as it’s not my genre of choice. So seeing that I was indeed a member of the intended target audience, I was curious to know if that tag line were indeed true. The Host bases it’s story off of science fiction. We’re talking “worm-like” aliens have taken over Earth by inserting themselves into the human bodies and forcing the human mind or soul out. In fact, the aliens believe that they are doing humans a favor because the humans are so violent and messed up. And well, these aliens are loving, peacekeeping, and much to nice. The Host was definitely of the science fiction persuasion, but the tag line was true. It didn’t bother me and thank goodness it was more about a love story than anything else.
Wanderer, nicknamed Wanda (a name that I couldn’t stand to read, has been inserted into Melanie, one of the last remaining human lifeforms. Melanie had survived by being on the run with her boyfriend Jared and her little brother Jamie. There is only one problem. Melanie refuses to “fade away” and Wanda finds herself having to deal with the human who won’t “get out of her head.” Wanda inherits not only all of Melanie’s memories but her physical longings as well and finds herself falling in love with Jared. She decides to do something nobody in her alien race has done before, and that’s sympathize with the humans. She becomes determined to find Jared and Jamie and soon discovers more than she bargained for.
Jared and Jamie have found a pocket of resistant humans and when Wanda does finds them not everybody is happy. After all, this is Melanie’s body but Wanda’s mind. Through Wanda’s interaction with the humans, she discovers what it means to truly be human. She also learns about love. I thought there were some interesting questions brought up. Is love about appearances? Is it a physical attraction? Can two people love the same person and continue to co-exist in the same body together? Well, that last question probably isn’t very probably and likely when thinking about ourselves. Also, what does it mean to be human?
There really was only one way for this book to end and I did see it coming a mile away. I honestly, don’t know how it could have ended any other way. But that didn’t stop me from wanting to see it for myself. My mother-in-law (waving hello, because she reads all of my posts) really liked the Twilight Series and was really excited to read The Host. So I was looking forward to hearing what she thought about it. She said she didn’t like it. And for one reason. Star Trek. Did I remember that episode were Dr. Beverly Crusher falls in love with a man only to find out that he is a worm-like parasite living in that hosts body? In fact, I loved Star Trek when I was younger and my family and I watched it every night without fail. So I had to think back on this one and after looking it up I do remember this episode.
In this particular episode (which is also called The Host), the host body is hurt, so Dr. Crusher has to perform a transfer and Ryker volunteers to be the next host body until another suitable replacement is found. Can Dr. Crusher still love her boyfriend even if it’s Ryker’s body? And it gets even more interesting when the new host body does show up and it’s female. (And if you’re a Star Trek fan, this is the first appearance of the Trills, the symbiotic lifeforms that play a large role in Deep Space Nine, mostly through the character Dax. Just a bit of trivia for you.) Anyways, here’s a little trailer for Star Trek, The Host trailer.
And my mother-in-law is right. Quite similar. I wonder, is Stephenie a Star Trek fan? Did she see this episode when she was younger? Did it sit there in the back of her mind and now can’t remember where she came up with the idea of a worm? I’m sure all authors get their inspiration from all kinds of places. The similarities didn’t really bother me and in fact I didn’t even make the connection until our conversation. So there you have it, I indeed did pull together Star Trek and Stephenie Meyer together in the same review. Now who else is going to give you that?!
The Host is definitely worth trying. Like the Twilight series, I think it will be one that you love or don’t love, a hit and miss. Stephenie does an excellent job pulling together the paranormal with a human interest love story that will keep you turning the page for more (well, once you get out of the caves, that is).
Up next: a HUGE Stephenie Meyer giveaway! So big, it’s getting it’s own post. Seriously, don’t miss it!! And check out my thoughts about attending Stephenie’s book signing for The Host here.

on June 16th, 2008 at 1:05 amAfter my wife finished The Host, she suggested I read it next because it was more my thing. She hasn’t done that with any of Meyer’s previous books, so I assumed this one was different.
Your review helps, maybe I’ll give it a shot.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:58 amThis is probably the 5th review I’ve seen of this book. I’m always on the lookout for “sci-fi for the beginner” so I can introduce family/friends to this wonderful genre without scaring them off. It seems like this is exactly that kind of book – thanks for the review!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:03 amI’ve been hearing a lot about this novel and it’s good to read a review that doesn’t automatically rave about Stephenie Meyer’s writing talent.
I’m actually waiting on this book from the library, so hopefully I’ll be able to read it soon.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:28 amI have to admit that I didn’t really want to read The Host at first. I was worried that it would be nowhere near as good as Stephenie’s other books were. But, after reading your review and others like it I think I might try it out… Like you said, ‘the host is definately worth trying’.
Thanks for the review!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:33 amOk, I have to say that I agree with you on some parts. The book to me was hard to get into at first. But (yes, there is a but lol) I loved when Wanda first entered the caves. It’s actually the part that made me want to read more and more.
I also do not like the name Wanda and think that Jeb and Jamie are to accepting of Wanda at first. I expected a little bit of dislike in the beginning.
But anyways, Great review!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:35 amI loved the Host. I also saw the ending a mile away, but you never know so I finished it to see. It still made me cry and laugh..so I know it was worth the read, just like the Twilight series.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:36 amThis book sound really awsome and I can’t wait to read it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:41 amat first, i did find the book a little too “wordy”. but my friend suggested the book to me and i really wanted to know if melanie would get her body back. the story picked up a little too late; i thought that as well. evertyime they hurt Wanda ( i preferred Wanderer, the name reminded me of the fairy Wanda in the fairly odd parents) it made me tear up. besides the fact that you found the ending suprising (i didn’t i knew stephenie meyer grows attached to her characters), i agreed a with a lot of points in your review. excellent job!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:44 amoh entry number 2!!! wahooo! and it sounds like a good read.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:47 amI totally agreed with you about the whole ‘Wanda’ reading the name. I think it totally humanized her, and sort of let me forget that she was an alien. Which lead me to also believe that it was ’science fiction for people who don’t like science fiction’.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:47 amHowever, I have to disagree with you about it being too wordy and should be 150 pages shorter. Sure, it could be a little shorter, for example the beginning, but I absolutely adored the descriptions. I found it easier to picture and relate to.
Also, I loved the part when they got to the caves. I got hooked then, haha.
When I read the host it definetly felt like her writing style and a bit reminisent of twilight in the way that its two guys fighting over a girl and her being kind of timid and scared but accepts the outcome and works with it. I did enjoy most parts of the book however, I found it very very long (much longer than it needed to be) and I didnt like when people where getting physical with her all the time. I did like that the Uncle took them in and wanted Wanda there. Great review of the book!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:48 amI agree that it was too long. But I still really liked it.
Very interesting catch on the Star Trek episode. If you ever get a chance to talk to Stephenie Meyer again you will have to ask her if she was inspired by that episode.
The name Wanda bothered me through the whole book! I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’m also glad I’m not the only one who stays up til all hours of the morning to finish a good book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:51 amI loved The Host. That’s interesting about the Star Trek thing, though. Hmm. I wonder if that’ll show up in any Stephenie interviews in the near future.
“Are you a Star Trek fan?”
I hated the name Wanda too, but I see the need to give Wanderer a human name. It would have been more difficult for everyone else to accept her if she had still gone by an alien name like “Wanderer”.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:51 amI actually set the book down for a good week or two during the caves. I mean, the caves are pretty interesting, but it slowly became monotonous. While it probably had that feel because the caves are meant to be rather tedious in the story, it was frustrating reading through all that and wanting something to actually happen.
I wasn’t expecting the ending, but then I wasn’t expecting anything in the first place. This was a good book, but it was a little mindnumbing in comparison to Twilight, especially when I first found out there were 619 pages. I think you’re right that some of it could have been cut, and I personally think that the climax wasn’t set up very well, and that there should have been a little more actually happening between the first hundred and last hundred pages.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:54 amMy grandma is a fan but she didnt even finish The Host. A lot of people have said the same as you, not really too wordy but just didnt get their attention. Which I find weird because I loved it :-p It wasnt as good as the Twilight books but I thought it would make an amazing new series. To each their own I guess
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:00 amI liked it, too. But I have to disagree. I enjoyed the descriptios; they helped paint a picture of the setting, since I have never been to a desert. I would love a sequel because I fell in love with these characters, too. I’m eager to re-read ‘The Host’ just like I have the Twilight Saga.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:07 amI just read this book this week and I liked it a lot – probably more than any of the Twilight books. Agreed that it’s a bit too long, but not horrible.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:11 amI definitely agree with you that it was a slow beginning. However, I was so excited to have another book by Stephenie Meyer that I kept on reading anyway. However, I found when I decided to read the Host again that I didn’t start at the beginning. I skipped to where she was already at the caves and more exciting things were happening (aka Ian). If you could enter me in your contest I’d appreciate it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:13 amIn all truth i am not a big fan of science fiction…so when i heard of this book i wasn’t so thrilled either.
Your review say what i was thinking the whole time i was reading The Host. I thought that the book was a little too long and that some parts went on for a while, but at the end of the book i really liked it.
Really good review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:14 amI’m so behind the times. I’m never read ANYTHING by Stephanie Meyer. I just put all of the books on my bookmooch wishlist because I need to catch up. It is getting to the point where this is like not having read Harry Potter. I’m off to your other post to comment there so I can enter this contest and be ‘cool’ again.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:19 amI know that this book is harder to read than the books in the Twilight series, but it’s worth it to give this book a chance. We should all give the book a chance or the love of Stephenie (Meyer that is). This was a review that was honest and interesting to read.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:23 amI have to admit when i first ehard about the Host i wasn’t sure i wanted to read it because i didn’t think it would be as exciting or as GREAT as the Twilight saga!!!
But this review has made me want to read it!!1it seems just as good as the Twilight Saga!!! and i would love to read The Host!!!
AWESOME REVIEW!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:35 amI couldn’t put it down, I don’t know how you could stop reading it! But i’m with you on the Wanda, it just didn’t fit right I thought.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:35 amWow good review! I read The Host to and I thought it was a little slow and wordy in the beginning but most of it was necessary information.
When it picked up towards the middle I reallyy loved it and it’s close to how much I love Twilight!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:37 amThat is interesting…it is so similar to the Star Trek episode. Thanks for including that in your review.
I agree with you that it did get a little dragged out when they got to the caves. Thank goodness for Jeb…he was pretty interesting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:40 amI agree with your points that, it was a bit too wordy & could have been shorter, but was still a good book.
I, too, fell under the tagline “Science Fiction for the people that dont like Science Fiction” – I actually havent read any at all, but it still captured my attention.
I noticed you said your mother-in-law said it was ‘Star Trek’, I have never seen that so I wouldnt be able to make the comparison, but I dont see why relating to another thing would make it a bad book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:40 amI really loved that the fact that the book answered all the questions you proposed. And what it took for Wanda to be human. I sympathised with her in the caves. That was probably the sadest part for me. It aggravated me so much that she was mute in those first few weeks in the caves. I was actually yelling at her to say something. lol.
But i agree with you that the Star Trek similie is quite interesting. I guess a million people are gonna ask her if this is how she got her idea. Does anyone know has she came up with the idea?
If you haven’t read The Host and still haven’t after you read ThIS review, then somethings wrong with you.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:42 amGreat review!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:42 amI agree with you on the slowness of the caves part in the book. I did want to stop reading for a couple of days but I kept reading hoping it would get better (I mean it was Stephenie Meyer so it had to right).
When I first found out it was a science fiction I didn’t know if I wanted to read it because that isn’t usually my kind of book. Now that I finished reading it, I can’t help but love it like the Twilight series.
This review is somewhat in comparison as to what i think of one of eclipse’s chapter. (i know this is the host but still) stephenie is a great author no doubt in that but she does get carried away sometimes when she is describing something in the host was the scene in the cave, while in eclipse it was the chapter about the legends.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:43 amPlease enter me in the contest!!!
“the humans are so violent and messed up” LMAO It is very true about humans, just look at the wars and history, they tell all.
I found this review great because I’ve been needing to read it and I wasn’t sure if I even really did want to. Knowing what happens makes me sure to want to read it now, especially because I ahve the details and scenes of boringness in mind
. I also don’t exactly read science fiction so I am excited to read The Host even more.
I also do want to win haha
And if I do, then I’ll be able to get The Host and not have to buy it hahaha
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:44 amGreat review- it really summed it up well, in my opinion. That’s interesting about the Star Trek episode. Enter me in your contest, please!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:46 ami absolutley LOVED that book! im really suprised at how well you summed it up. i tried once for my friends and i just to her you have to read it to understand it! but thats weird about the star trek episode thing!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:52 amI love to win stuff, so I’m going to double my chances with another comment. Thanks so much for hosting such a fab giveaway.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:58 amThe Host was definitely a good book, but it’s no twilight. I hope she’ll write more to it. It doesn’t seem complete.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:59 amI may get stoned to death in saying this that The host was my favorite book the Stephenie has written. Unlike you I found myself incredibly bored on the part in the begining. It seemed slow to me. Just full of dreams and seeker/soul terms. Sure she was doing things but they had no real meaning. I like your summary of it too. I almost completely HATE scific and this was for me. I had never noticed the conection between star treck and the host. (Maybe due to the fact that I don’t watch it.) Stephenie said that she had a dream where worms were stilling her children and decided to make souls into those. So that they could be both pretty and ugly depending on what you are. It was an overall good review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:01 amTEAM IAN
please add me to the contest thingy.
The Host is not as good as the Twilight series, but it was pretty good anyway. The Host was still a better book to read than some other books I’ve read.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:03 amI have been hesitant about reading The Host because science fiction is not really my thing, but your review made it more appealing to me than others that I have read, so I’ll have to give it a shot.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:03 amThis book sounds great! I can’t wait until I get to read it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:06 amMy friends tell me this book is fantastic! I can’t wait to read it! It interesting that Stephenie Meyer wouls write about aliens…
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:11 amI agree that the beginning was a little dry and boring, but once you get into it, it gets really good. Nice Review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:13 amThe reveiw was great and I agreed on all levels; I also thought it could have been shortened about 150 pages. Thanks for also pointing out the likeness to Star Trek! I never would have noticed!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:17 am(Entry #2! YES!)
THat was awesome!! Especially with the star trek little trailer very good similarity! I do have to agree with you when it comes to teh caves….I kept on saying in my head “can we get out now?!” but of course yeah but it was a relief when they finally do…and we hear about more people other than that the book was awesome!! Stephenie Meyer is the only author that has been able to make me cry while reading a book…ever!! and thats a good thing!! lol again …AWESOME REVIEW!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:22 amThat was a great review. I totally agree with you about the whole Wanda name. It bothered me for a while but then i got over it. The whole time i was reading it though i kept hating Jared for being such a butt to Wanda, but i still kinda liked him. It was wierd. I’m with the way it ended though. I was wondering if Stephenie was going to make it a sad but peaceful ending where wanda dies or a happy ending. But either way would have been good. about the last 5 chapters i was like crying the whole time. Idk if anyone else did but when ian got all made i totally broke down. It was so sad… I really like the little star trek comparison. awesome
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:34 amthat review was so great.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:36 amthis book was so amazing.
it really opened my eyes to different
genres of books. and this is
definitely not the last sci fi book i will
read! =)
The host was absolutely a great book, but I pick Twilight over the Host. I do agree with you on being too wordy, and I too, cant stand the name Wanderer. I was really, really tempted to get a sharpie thin line and scratch out the ‘a’ and put ‘erer’ after it..
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:39 amI’m happy that the Host is more a love story than a sci-fi story.
Great reveiw.
Wow, it’s great to see a review that’s not “OMG, OMG! Jared and Ian are soooo hot!” (not that I don’t agree), but I love how truthfull the review was. I laughed when you said you couldn’t stand to read Wanda’s name. I agree that it was kind of long, but it kept me attached. At first I was a little confused when I read the first few chapters, but I went back and re-read them and was suprised by how much I missed the first time through! Great Review! 5 Stars in my book!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:46 ami loved the host
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:48 ami read it becuz stephanie meyer wrote it or else i probably wouldn’t have been interested i read it and read it and couldnt let it go i would be devastated when i wasn’t reading it i finlly finished and have to say i wasn’t oo happy with the ending
this review really shows what the book about it shows what the book is about which is that true love know no bounds
I have not actually read The Host yet, but your review makes me wonder about the big questions in the book. I’ve never been a fan of Star Trek, but maybe the book won’t have that feel for me.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:52 amI also thought that The Host was too long. I think she could have gotten the same point across without so many descriptions.
I did like it though. I got so carried away reading it one night, I was up until 4 in the morning finishing it.
The ending was also quite predictable. But I still enjoyed it.
(I would love to be entered into the drawing again please
)
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:05 amI liked the ending but I wish it would have gone in a different direction.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:07 ami do agree with you on the part about it being a little bit to wordy. there were some parts were i wanted to put it down too. i was in the middle of finals week when i was reading it and it was hard to stay in the little desert fantasy. I think steph has gotten to be a better writer though and this was another good opportunity to explore her writing style. I noticed while i was reading that the humor that embodies stephenie was coming out in her writing and i could see her actuallly saying some of the sarcastic comments mentioned.
haha. a lot of the parts about the inner confrontations between mel and wanderer about the boys cracked me up! i will agree with you on the other fact that it was a like it or hate it book. but regardless ive already read it twice. haha
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:08 amI’ve been wanting to read this because I am a fan of Stephanie Meyer, but not a huge fan of reading sci-fi. I do love watching it on tv though, lol.
Thanks for the great review! I am definitely intrigued now.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:14 amgreat review!! the only thing is that i actually think that they needed to spend time in the caves. it helped build the characters personalities and such. plus, if i knew that one of stephenie meyer’s books was cut down 100 PAGES, i think i’d explode. i can’t get enough of her writing.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:19 amI do, however, agree with you on the name Wanda. I swear, i hate that name. ugh.
maybe i am just blind, but i had no idea about the ending! it was a complete suprise for me!!
I think the Host was a REALLY good book. Yes, it was a bit wordy but it didn’t really bother me, it just helped me get a better picture of what was going on. The beginning was a little bit boring but after that I could not stop reading. I laughed and I cried AND I loved the ending.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:20 amwow i’m sooo incredibly glad that i’m not the only one who didn’t fully love love love this book. i talked to all of my friends and they all enjoyed it, but i have to say that i didn’t really.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:22 ami agree with a lot of your points – it was kinda too long for me, and i kept putting it down wondering if they were ever going to get out of the caves. [and no offense to anyone named wanda, but it did get kind of annoying reading it - just not one of my favorite names in the world]
I’m glad you gave both positive and negative comments. It does seem interesting though.I think ill read it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:23 amI agree with you on most of this . I thought it was too lengthy, and I struggled to get through those 100+ pages . But, I did enjoy the descriptions . It helps me get more into the books .
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:30 amI didn’t like the ending . I didn’t want Wanda to leave Melanie’s body, no matter how inevitable it was .
: )
I loved The Host. When I finished it, I moped around the house for two days, attempting to read other books but quickly deeming them unworthy after reading such a masterpiece. Personally, I was really into science fiction when I was younger so this book wasn’t much of a jump between genres for me.
I’m so glad Wanda got a new body. To be honest, sometimes her complete selflessness irritated me at some points throughout the novel. I felt like saying, Think about yourself for once! The character of Ian was awesome and although my heart will always lie with Edward (wink, wink), Ian certainly holds a special place inside me. In general, Jared was an annoying character for me. Yeah, he’s gorgeous, but he abused Wanda in the beginning! I guess I can see where he’s coming from, but still…I didn’t really like him. Jamie was adorable and reminded me of my little brother.
The ending was really good. I too could see it coming, but that didn’t make it any less sweet. I really, really hope Stephenie writes a sequel, or maybe even a trilogy!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:36 amI agree with you about the name Wanda. It never really stuck with me and I think I preferred Wanderer. My friend also agrees with your views on the book’s wordiness, but I love long books so I didn’t mind the descriptions. I’m glad you ended up liking it. I don’t watch Star Trek so I never would have noticed the similarities, but I don’t think Stephenie Meyer would ever copy the plot of a tv show on purpose. Maybe she did see the episode and forgot, like you mentioned. Anyway, great review and I can’t wait to read one on Breaking Dawn!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:42 amI really enjoyed the Host myself. Maybe even a little more than the twilight series. I do understand the whole slow start of the book though. When my mother started reading the book she thought the beginning was too slow too. I also didn’t like the name Wanda it just reminded me the cartoon character from the Fairly Oddparents. I still very much enjoyed the book and it has become one of my all time favorites!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:44 amI loved The Host. It gripped me from the very beginning. It was hard to read certain parts, yet they were so true to the volatile parts of human nature! It would be interesting to see where a trilogy would lead.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:44 amhmm, i totally agree with you! Esp. about the ‘too wordy/long’. I wonder if SM actually will continue The Host and make a trilogy or whatever? Wanda…not sure if i like it or not. I guess it’s okay!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:48 amI’m split between if I loved The Host, or if it was just okay… I have to admit, when I started reading it, I didn’t like it very much, but because it’s Stephenie Meyer, I gave it a shot. I agree with you on many things. The Host brought up questions about love, life, and what it means to be human. I found myself bawling at the end. Yes, there were plenty of slow parts that could’ve easily been cut off. I don’t mind reading long books, but some of it was just unnecessary. Overall, I’ve come to the conclusion that I loved it. I mean, how can you not love Ian O’Shea?! But he’s no Edward Cullen :].
I really like your reviews, by the way.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:52 amThat review was good! I wonder if Stephenie really did get the whole thing from Star Trek? It’s something to look into. I’d like to be entered for the contest too, thanks!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:59 amI totally agree with you. I loved the Host, but the entire time I was waiting for Edward to pop up (and I think he did, sort of, in Ian). Once I FINALLY realized that Edward wasn’t going to show up, I was a fair bit into the book.
When I started re-reading it, I completely skipped the first half, because I thought it droned on too much. I understand that the story has to be established, but it was too long.
I loved the review. It completely sums up MY opinion on the book too!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:59 amhmm, i agree with you all the way. It was REALLY long! Awesome job on the review!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:02 amI have not read the host yet, but I plan to as soon as I can aford it. lol ^.^ I love to read reviews on it though so that I can get more of a feeling for the book. I love science fiction, so I am sure I will love this book also. thanks for sharing your ideas about the book with me. ^.^
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:06 amI pretty much agree with your review…cept that once I got past chapter 8, I couldn’t put it down. It is kinda predictable, and I did love Ian pretty much from the start and saw that coming, but I liked it. And I cried at the end. And I do hope she continues on the story. “Wanda” was tough for me too cuz that’s my grandma’s name, lol. Thanks for the offer for the book!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:06 ami completely agree with what you said. At first I did not want to read The Host. I thought that Stephenie Meyer could not write anything as good as the Twilight Series. Also I’ve never like Sci-Fi, but man was I ever glad to be wrong. I completely loved it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:07 amThanks for the awesome review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:13 amI thought it was really interesting with all the in-depth you went on with the Star Trek/Host Similarities. This is my second review I have read of the host and by far the best.
I love how you add in all of those rhetorical questions because it really gets my mind thinking and working. Keep up the good work!
The beginning is the part my friends tell me they couldn’t get through. I personally like the beginning, but I haven’t even made a dent in finishing it =[
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:17 amThe beginning is the part my friends tell me they couldn’t get through. I personally like the beginning, but I haven’t even made a dent in finishing it =[
I do agree that it is lengthy, but it is an adult novel. I guess that means more description? No clue. But I’m sure it’s amazing. I have to finish it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:18 amGreat review. As much as I love Stephenie Meyer’s books, it gets old always reading reviews that gush about her writing style and new fame. I also found the book a little wordy, but it didn’t seem like padding to me, so I kept reading, and ended up loving the book, once it gets going. The Star Trek connection is interesting, I’ll have to ask my brother if he remembers that episode!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:18 amI have not read the book The Host yet, but I want to. Your review makes me want to go get the book and compare. And [[you're really good at writing reviews]] Good Job. =]
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:21 ami havnt read the host yet but i also heard it was really long. awsome review! at first, i didnt want to read twilight, but my friends forced me to, so i read it and got hooked. im pretty sure the same thing will happen when i read the host.:]
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:22 amI love the Twilight saga but sometimes Stephenie Meyer makes the books a little too long (especially in New Moon) so I’m not surprised that The Host is like that too. I was actually thinking about what I should do while I’m waiting for Breaking Dawn to come out and I guess I should give The Host a chance. I’m not really that into science fiction but reading your review made me want to read the book. =)
(And BTW I would like to be entered in the draw please.
)
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:24 amI havent read the Host yet…but it’s on by TBR list…if only i had more time
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:29 amI have yet to read “The Host” but judging from you’re review I can’t wait till I do. I know nothing can top off the ‘Twilight’ series but at least it’ll give me something to do while waiting for ‘Breaking Dawn’. Keep writing more reviews! I’m glad you included some negative aspects of the book as well, not everyone does that.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:29 amI haven’t read The Host yet, but your review has convinced me to go and buy a copy. I actully like the tagline for the book, because I also am not a huge sci-fi fan.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:29 amThe Host was an amazing book. It was, as i just knew it would be, long and very well written. I have always loved to read and Stephenie’s books are definatly ones I can read over and over and yet still laugh and smile at something that happens. Your review of the book was also very well written. I relly enjoyed reading it. I give you two tunbs up! Great job!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:31 amI would love to enter to win the host.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:31 amI thought The Host was a wonderful book. A more mature or “important” story, I guess you could say, than Twilight. Of course, it didn’t suck me in quite as much as Twilight did- for the first little while, at least. But such beautiful insight into what it’s like to be human…
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:39 amGreat review!! This is the kind of review everyone needs ’cause it’s down to earth and actually shows what someone in the real world thinks of the Host. And it shows the book’s faults and flaws. And it still makes people want to go read the book! Thanx Natasha!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:40 amWell, I’m commenting for the giveaway, but I DO also have my own opinion of the book!
I rather enjoyed it, though I did find the trekking through the desert a bit tiresome >.>
And what’s the point of a book other than to entertain the reader? The storyline entertained me, so I felt fulfilled
Although the ending did make it seem to me as if she had just Given Up. Even though there really was no other way, I couldn’t let go of the feeling that she’d just…stopped trying with Melanie. Or something.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:49 amStephenie has amazed me once again! I was very nervous about reading The Host because, as the teenage girl I am, didn’t know if I myself could handle a book without Edward and Bella. But, I most certainly did. This book is amazing, realy, teaching us about ourslefs and the way we act, who we are and why we do what we do. Her writing just got ten times better (I did not think it possible)and her discriptions captivate you. You learn many life lessons that Stephenie brings out brilliantly in this epic novel. I can’t wait for the many she has in store.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:54 amI haven’t even read The Host yet and I’m already hooked up. This was incredible. I loved the rhetorical questions cause it made me think about it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:58 amIt’s also very interesting how you referred to Star Track – I have never seen this episode, in fact, I haven’t watched Star Track at all , but now I am really curious .
I was entirely sure ( 100%) that I would buy this book, cause I’d read everything by this genius woman, but now I’m even more convinced
it’s in my hands.
CAN’T WAIT TO READ IT NOW :O !!
First, I want to say that was a well thought out review. Second, I do agree with you on most accounts. Sometimes it did get tiresome. I always told myself it would get better. That’s how I finished it in 3 days.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:58 amTo be honest, I haven’t actually read this review yet. I am still in the process of reading the Host (I work full time and act on a Murder Mystery Train at night so my time is limited). I didn’t want anything spoiled, so I didn’t read the review yet. I’m only about 100 pages in to the book so far. I’m really enjoying it so far. I think the concept is really interesting, and I’m really looking forward to reading more… I just wish I had more time! (Now can this count as an entry in the contest?
)
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:59 amThis was a really good review, and I do agree with you on somethings. I think it took a while for me to actually get into reading the book, but once I did I couldn’t put it down. Some parts seemed to drag out a bit though and could have been cut out, I did like the ending though. It seemed like there was still hope for Earth. =]
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:03 pm(contest entry)
I think that your absolutely right when you say that many people questioned whether stephenie could write something w/o bella and edward. it wasn’t just the author either. myself, being a reader, had a hard time reading w/o bella and edward. it was a great book and i’m in love with all things meyer. star trek and stephenie meyer all in one? that’s a connection to be remembered.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:04 pmbella&edward101
I enjoyed reading The Host. I do have to say that it took me awhile to finish it. It seemed a little drawn out and yet I could have just been impatient.
The best thing about The Host is that it is her best written book so far. Her writing has developed a lot since Twilight.
Thanks for the review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:06 pmThe host was AMAZING…. (I reread it 3 times before i started giving it to my friends to read!!!!!!!!!!) =D
Stephenie is just a FRICKING GENIUS!!!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:07 pmI agree with most of your review (including a distracting choice of Wanda), except for when you described The Host as too wordy. That’s what I especially loved about the book. Stephenie took the time to make sure every reader understood what was happening in the book. Although the cave part was a bit draggy, I still enjoyed the details.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:12 pmTo tell you the truth, I haven’t read “The Host” yet. My friend was actually telling me about it the other day but I zoned her off the minute she said “science-fiction type of book.”
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:23 pmI hope your right that it really isn’t like that and that it’s more of a love story. You did a better job in convincing me with your review than my best friend of 12 years did! =)
I agree with alot of your points about the book. It did get a little wordy at times, though I love long books. I also wasn’t a fan of the name Wanda, but hey, it’s Jeb.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:27 pmI’m a huge Twilight fan and had a little bit of a tough time getting into the Host. But I once I was I couldn’t put it down.
Now, you said you saw only one possible outcome for the book. I saw two. I thought that Wanda was acutally going to die, but I guess Ian and everyone wouldn’t have let that happen.
I was a little reluctant to read this novel because it sounded a little too out-of-this-world, but I think I’ll read it for sure, now. I just need to find the money to buy it…
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pmI liked this book a lot, and I also wondered if she was a Trekkie. I liked that the book was going for people other than sci fi lovers and I think it works.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pmI really enjoyed your review. I completely agree with most of your comments. Accept for the Star Trek (I’ve never seen it so wouldn’t be able to actually compare them) i agree with them all. The book did drag a little for me at the beginning when Wanderer (agree with you there to the name Wanda annoyed me) was in the desert and then big action in the caves. It went in waves for me for a while, exciting then less. Didn’t stop me from reading the entire book in two days but hey, I’m a Myers fan we’re all crazy.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pmI actually feel that the cave seen was long but somehow i liked every minute of it..this sounds like me avoiding an answer but very honestly i cannot explain why i would i usually hate scenes that continue forever. I’ve never been much of a fan of miniscule details. I laughed when I saw the name Wanda so i just had to mentally ommit it and replace it with Wanderer. I too am not a big sci-fi fan, and I don’t watch much Star-Trek but I find it interesting that both the title and theme of the episode and books are the same. Overall i did enjoy the Host but have yet to actually own a copy(wink wink)and the rest of the twilight series for that matter(nudge nudge) Stephanie certainly did make fantasy and sci-fi enjoyable for a usually real-life story fan. I never thought i’d see the day where I would say that books about vampires, werewolves, and aliens are extremely well written
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:30 pmNow I haven’t read the Host yet but now I definetly want to. Sci-Fi is definetly not my genre of choice (forced to watch Star Trek 1 to many times) but I love Stephenie’s writing so much I think I’ll give it a try. When I first heard about the Host I didn’t think it would be a long as it was but when I saw it I was shocked! It is so big! Maybe she could cut down a word or two.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:30 pmThat’s funny but I thought the same thing about Star Treck…And I don’t know for you but I think SM sometimes takes obvious elements from other books, in twilight, for example, there was a lot if it…
And I agree, there were a lot of unnecessary details in The host. I bought it the day it went out and I still HAVEN’T FINISHED IT YET ! Which is really weird for someone like me…
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:31 pmI’d love anything that’s by Stephenie Meyer – but it’s scifi, and I don’t normally read that. But if she’s tying romance into that, then sign me in! Your review does help, but a little too wordy? Hmm, I’d have to look into that. Thanks thoughh!
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:34 pmIt sounds really cool. I’m not a big sci – fi kinda girl, but i’m always willing to try if it’s Stephenie and it gets a decent review. Thanks for the warning about a lag part. It will help to get me through it to know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel of scifiness. Thanks for the review
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:35 pmi don’t like sci-fi either but.. it sounds like a greta book!!! i hope i get to read it soon
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:38 pmOh wow! Since I’m not a big Star-Treck fan (actually I have never even seen a commercial before now)I would have never noticed that particular similarity and in fact if you hadn’t included that little snippit I wouldn’t have belived you.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:39 pmAnd I think you were right about the caves being a little slow but as to 100 pages too long I don’t know.
Oh and you seriously only saw one ending? I read like three! I kept waiting for it to end and then it didn’t!
I’m not trying to critisize or anything your opinion is your opinion I’m just expressing mine…if you don’t mind. =)
I haven’t read The Host yet, which is kind of disappointing considering how Stephenie Meyer is my favorite author, but you have to admit she isn’t the best out there.
However, I doubt 3 chapters in The Host is considered as actually ‘reading’. But my friend, has finished it and she’s a fantastic reader, and what I mean is she’s fast, loves book and can read almost anything unless it’s crappy. She said the book is so good, but she’s still confused. And I am too, though I should be considering how early I am in the book.
She also spoke how The Host ended happily, while Meyer could have made it really terrible making all fans/readers coming to her house with torches ready to burn her down. So she came to a conclusion that Breaking Dawn would be ending happily as well.
Although this review of the book and all the inferences isn’t mine…I just hope I’ll read the book soon and get my hands on a copy fast.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:39 pmI’m a huge Star Trek fan, lol. I wonder if I’d like this. I’m iffy on sci fi, I like some of it, but some is too much. My parents are big into sci fi & I have noticed that a lot of stories are quite similar. I think the same thing about Vampire books though. I guess there are only so many ideas
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:44 pmI agree with you that the beginning was very wordy. I found it hard to get into for quite awhile. Even when she found Jared and the caves I didn’t expect him to be so hostile towards her. I definitely like Ian more. Overall I liked the book, but it didn’t have the same pull/obsession that Twilight did. I also had a hard time with the name Wanda. No offense to anyone with that name, but it didn’t really fit her. Wanderer was much better. The Sci-fi part of it was minimal. The love story made me mad though. I understand Wanda’s pull towards Jared, but I didn’t like that Jared had some feelings for Wanda in the end.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:14 pm~nice review~
No, no, just kidding. I have yet to read ‘The Host’ ( I just finished ‘Eclipse’) and I was wondering how it would compare. Your Star Trek reference put some things into perspective for me. I think I will give it a try while I wait for ‘Breaking Dawn’ to come out.
I think the wait just might drive me slightly crazy.
Jenn
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:29 pmCan’t wait to read it1 Sounds like a very good book!
=]
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:29 pmI know what you mean about the book being dull in spots and having to put it down. But everytime i did i had to pick it right up again i felt the book was to addicting to really put down for a long time.
I do see the similarities between the host and star trek i had watched the episode recently with my father and i noticed they were similar but i thoght that stephenie did a good job anyways writing the book. It held my intrest and thats hard to do when sci fi is involved.
btw nice review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:30 pmI liked the length of The Host. Maybe I’m just weird that way, but the words all fit together nicely and I read it in a weekend. (Yes, I was a little pressed for time because I had to hand it back to my friend on Monday, but I didn’t rush through it at all.)
I can’t stand Science Fiction. It never seems real and part of what I love about reading is being put into a different situation. Science Fiction just doesn’t do that for me. Then Mrs. Meyer comes up with the Host and I can no longer say I’ve never read a Science Fiction novel. I loved The Host, it was brilliant.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:42 pmi just finished the Host and LOVED it! =D
jk
i read it in just 3 1/2 nights staying up till around 2:00. it was NOT too long! shame on you for thinking so!!!!!
but you were right about the ’scifi 4 ppl who dont like scifi’; i never liked that crazy alien, starwars, startrek, stuff. Just not my thing, i guess.
i guess we’re all entitled to our own opinions.
-??gab
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:43 pmyou made me want to read it! i guess i’ll just have to buy it…or win it!! ha ha! it sounds very interesting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:46 pmwell, that really was a great review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:51 pmi love learning other people’s POVs about Stephenie’s work.
it gives you other perspectives to look through.
i happened to love The Host.
i never really got into science fiction, and when i heard The Host was a science fiction book, i have to say, i wasn’t too excited about it.
but she said it was ’science fiction for people who don’t like science fiction.’
and it IS stephenie meyer, so i read the book.
it took me about two days, and i couldn’t put it down.
it was so amazing.
i havent read the book yet..but your review made me want to read it more than i already did! Your review was awesome and i loved it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:51 pmI liked the review! I’ve read The Host and i think you really did do a good job explaining it! Maybe i can convince my sister to read it if she reads this review! :}
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:53 pmyou brought up a lot of intresting topics in this review espicaly the star trek part because i to use to watch them every night with my dad ((the reruns anyway)). I also get stuck in wordy books myself but sometimes that extra detail gives you more feeling and insite into the situation but i havent read the book yet so i wouldnt know. I think i would like to read this book even though i’m not really into the science fiction stuff but it sounds good enough to me.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:57 pmI totally agree with what you said about the science fiction part of it. It is aliens but its so much more about love and i was also very grateful for that too. Very thorough!
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:58 pm(this is to be entered into the giveaway)
I agree that the beginning was very wordy, SM (I think) has a hard time writing beginnings because the beginnings of Twilight, Eclipse and The Host were very sluggish. I thought that once they were in the caves, it would be like HP 7 which I have kindly dubbed “Harry Potter and the Extended Camping Trip”. But it wasn’t, I liked it quite a bit. I cried at the end of the book for a half hour, at the library no less! I think this can be called sci-fi for people who usually don’t read sci-fi because it’s a lot more about human nature and those kinds of issues then stereotypical sci-fi is.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:58 pmI have read the Host too and I definitely agree with you on many of your points. The first thing that I thought was “when is it going to pick up” and like you, as soon as she got to the cave, I COULD NOT put it down. I think that she does this to make sure that we understand and can relate to the character more.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:00 pmAnd like you, I don’t usually like sci-fi books, but I really liked the Host, I believe, because of the underlying love story. I thought your review was very truthful and I think that a lot of readers will agree with you on The Host. And she says that she might write a sequel, so we should keep our fingers crossed!
So…I skipped some of the paragraphs because I’m one to believe that they are spoilers. Haha. I haven’t read The Host yet and it’s killing me!! I can’t afford just yet to go buy a $20 book. It’s really annoying because I, a huge fan of Stephenie Meyer, can’t read her latest book that has been on the NY bestseller list. Really annoying. I’m waiting to get the book in July when it comes to my birthday. =\ It’s been a long wait. And would be awesome if I found out sooner rather than later about The Host. So I am responding so that I can get another entry for The Host and the Twilight Saga. =)
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:02 pmtotally agree with you.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:06 pmthe book became good in chapter 14.
there was too much information and it just confused me more.
i love the book so much.
the only reason why i read was beasuce it was written by stephenie. i hate scifi but i loved this book
she did a fabulous job.
i wanted to say that my fav. charachters are ian and wanda(dumb name but hey i didnt write the book)
dont like mel and jared so much. they are very selfish.
but nontheless stephenie is a magnificint writer and she did a great job again.
I was also forcibly reminded of Star Trek while reading certain scenes in The Host, as well as the book Ender’s Game. If you liked The Host, You should check that book out, too.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:20 pmAs a funny side-note, I have a friend who is dating a guy actually named “Dax.” :p
Your review makes me want to read the book. I’m really interested in it now and can’t wait to get a copy to read! It sounds so interesting!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:25 pmI am definitely interested in this – the rogue soul story in David Mitchell’s Ghostwritten was my favorite. You should check it out.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pmWell…I do agree with you. It was a bit long and the beginning just dragged on and on, but after chapter nine or ten, it became really interesting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:26 pmI hate – no absolutely loathe the name Wanda. Wanderer was so much better. My friends and I talked about this. Wanda sounds like a goldfish name, not a suitable name for the main character. But the characters were very enjoyable. I loved Stephenie Meyer’s characters and writing style, although it is not perfect.
I read this purely for the Stephenie Meyer factor. If she had not wrote this I never would have picked it up. But I enjoyed it thoroughly.
In first place, I haven’t read the Host yet….(im on the waiting list in the library)……But I think after reading this review you have given more reasons to read it……I have to say i loved the review. You did a good job explaining the story without giving too much away and sort of atracting people to read it. I especially liked the comparison between Star Trek and the Host…and the video…
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:27 pmWell, we both agree on the name “Wanda” Still kinda funny though. I liked your review alot, but I actually liked how descriptive she was. Very insightful and exqusite mind that woman has. And I think that she was putting alot of sensory details into the cav because its the main setting and something that nobody has really seen before. Your review was nicely in-depht and nice to read.
ps. I’m really excited about your give away and reading your other posts!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:32 pmVery good review… I agreed with many points you made. Although I wasn’t able to put the book down for 4 days like yourself, I also wasn’t that drawn into it in the beginning. The beginning of the novel is good, but it was only once Wanderer was in the caves that it really got interesting and sucked me in. And I also don’t like the nickname Wanda. It just didn’t seem to fit her; I preferred it much more when they called her Wanderer. And the last point I’d like to make is that Ian is what really made the book for me! I love him! He was so great!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:32 pmI so agree with the caves. I actually skimmed the cave pages. So far it is a good book. I am looking forward to staying up late to finish it. I feel so sad that the parasite thinks it is better than humans.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:47 pmthis truly is a good review. i didnt want to read it at first but after i read this review, im going to buy this book. im sure im going to love it a lot, after all its from my favorite author.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:51 pm(contest entry)
I agree with a lot of your points. Yes, the book dragged in many places. I found especially when the humans were (VERY SLOWLY) getting used to Wanderer in Melanie’s body that the book dragged. But I loved the kaeidiscope of emotions and love. Let’s face it, Twilight gives you young, passionate, romantic love, and some friendship. The Host dishes up a mother’s love for her child (very poignant and strong between Jamie and Melanie/Wanderer), slow erosion of stereotypes of both the aliens and the humans, sisterly love between Melanie and Wanderer, even love for quirky old Jeb (one of my favorite characters, BTW).
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:52 pmSo I’m with you pretty much in your review. Once I got past the slow chunks, I couldn’t put it down. Overall, I consider this one a triumph for Mrs. Meyer and I would definitely read any other books she writes related to The Host.
this was a very interesting review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:26 pmi read the host about 2 weeks ago and i agree with alot of things you talked about in your review. it’s nice to know what someone else thinks about the book because no one i know has read it yet.
I like the hole star trek video
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:28 pmit gives me more of an understand towards the book.
i do agree with you that she was able to pull this book of just as well .
but of course not as great as twilight.
thanx for the review!!!!
p.s. your giveaway is amazing and sign me up again
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:29 pmI agree with your review as well. I was one who about gave up on the book when I got to chapter 3, but I’m glad it didn’t. Come chapter 5 I couldn’t put it down.

on June 16th, 2008 at 4:45 pmI was surprised at the range of emotions I felt through out the book. I went from not liking Wander and feeling for Melanie, to really liking both of them come the end of the book. I got say, I got a good laugh out of the star trek video. LOL
I enjoyed all the characters in Stephenie’s book. For me, once I was done w/the book, I found myself liking all of the characters, even when I didn’t like them during the book.
I think Stephenie did a great job at putting the different points of view of survial in the story. I loved The Host! I liked the fact that it made me think alot, especially on what I would do if I was in the different character’s shoes. I recommend it…. just don’t give up when you get to the slow parts.
Thank you for doing a fun give away! What a great idea!!
I have not yet read “The Host” but I am curious to start it having read your review. I am in love with the Twilight books, and I have high hopes for “The Host”. Sci-fi is not typically my genre of choice either, so this should be interesting. Also, very curious about Star Trek…
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:53 pmYay for the contest!
enter me!!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:58 pmThe review is really helpful. I haven’t read “The Host” yet but I really want to. Now I know that when the cave part comes up to read through it fast and maybe skim it. Thanks for the review
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:58 pmGIVE ME THE BOOKS AND T-SHIRT!
by the way that was good review. enter me!!!
I like the host
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:59 pmI totally agree with you that I couldn’t stand reading the name Wanda. I definitely don’t like it. And I also had moments where I wondered if the book was going to pick up at some point. I’m glad it did, and really enjoyed it once I got into it. Never watched Star Trek, so the comparison was kind of lost on me, but I trust you there!
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:59 pmI skimmed over a lot of the review because I really don’t want to know much about this book before I read it. I am a big Star Trek fan and I thought I had seen every episode but that one seems only vaguely familiar and I can’t remember exactly what happens. I don’t really mind if Stephenie did get the idea from Star Trek because I think most book ideas stem from something. It seems almost impossible to come up with a completely original idea without some influence from something else.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:01 pmI loved the Host. I read it all in one sitting and finished around 3am. I do agree with you on the name Wanda. I kept thinking what is she an old waitress from the 70s. I did think the book was long, but I loved it. I especially loved the ending. I didn’t fully see it coming, but I hoped. You never know if an author will kill your favorite character as I found with my Weasly twin. That’s interesting about Star Trek. I didn’t see that one, but while reading I thought about the Wrath of Khan with the whole slug/worms in the ears. interesting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:15 pmI haven’t read the Host myself yet, because my library doesn’t seem to carry it. I know what you mean by long and wordy, though, as I’ve read many books like that, particularly award-winners, and I couldn’t finish the book. Very oftenly, I just toss the book before I get to the third chapter if it doesn’t catch me.
Hmm.. It does sound a bit like Animorphs, as I used to read as a child.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:20 pmI’d have to agree with you at most parts. When I first saw the book, I was a bit iffy about buying it, because the story was really science fiction, and honestly, I’m not a fan of sci-fi. But when I bought the book, it was hard for me to actually get into the story. But after awhile, they story became much, much better, when more of the drama was happening. (:
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:21 pm(lol, I couldn’t stand the name wanda either.)
I actually agree with you about the descriptions. Often times, I would skim through the pages just to get to the juicy part. I like to imagine what a place looks like to myself rather than have someone describe it in great detail. I also didn’t like Wanda’s name, too, but I got used to it after a while.
Stephenie is one of those authors that write about a very popular theme (ie. vampires) but creates her own little version of it. And by doing so, there are always new readers every day who never read vampires book–or dislike it, etc–and fall in love with her books. I think The Host is the same, as you mentioned above about “science fiction for those who don’t like science fiction”.
One of the things that I loved about the book was the variation of love. Stephenie explored every aspect of love, which is different from Twilight. I love the Twilight Saga, but The Host tops it off. The theme is more in depth.
Overall, I respect your input on The Host. This was a great and honest review, and I really like how you decided to finish the book, ’cause I think that book is worth reading.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:25 pmAfter reading the review I’m not sure if I want to read it or not. It sounds like a good story so, I’m sure I will enjoy that, but I just don’t want to be disappointed. Haha hearing the names Wanda and Melanie are kind-of comical since in The Twilight Saga all the names of the characters are old fashioned. I’ve read some other sci-fi books from authors i enjoy and have ended up enjoying them, so yeah, maybe I’ll look into reading it. =) thanks for the inside look.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:29 pmEvening, I think the human and paranormal aspects sound very intriguing. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy, though. Your review makes this book sound like it is worth the time to read. Many thanks, Cindi
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:30 pmThis review was very interesting to me. I haven’t read the book yet, but was planning on it. I love how you pulled together Star Trek and Stephenie Meyer, and you’re right, who else is going to give you that? Your view of the book is interesting. I like how you didn’t hold back and actually said that there were some parts you didn’t like, and explained why you didn’t like them. I’ve seen reviews of books that said they liked certain parts, but didn’t say what they didn’t like. (Not very good reviews, right?) Well, good job and I am anticipating that this book will be good. (I just don’t want to get stuck on the cave part like you did, ;])
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:33 pmSo i totally agree with you on the part where it was a little too long… i was also asking people who had read it, if they ever got out of the cave. I also dont read sci-fi so at first I was a little hesitant but then after i loved it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:35 pmI really liked the review. I really havent read The Host yet but it sounds really interesting. Also… ENTER ME!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:35 pmI have not read the Host yet. And, from your review, I’m still not sure if I’m excited to read it. Of course, I’m going to read it, since it is by STephenie Meyer, but I don’t know. A friend of mine mentioned that you can’t be reading this book and expect Edward to pop up somewhere. So, I’m slightly unsure. And yes, yahoo for the contest!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:35 pmHi, I honestly didn’t like your review. Stephenie Meyer has been described before as ‘not using a sentence when she could use a paragraph’. This is how she writes. If you don’t like that, don’t read her books. Wanda has a nickname. I honestly found it endeering. Of course, if that doesn’t float your boat, I don’t blame you. About the ending, sure it was a teensy bit expected, but I believe that the true ending was how self-sacrificing Wanda was willing to be and then later finding out that she wasn’t the only one of her kind.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:38 pmVery good review. I definitely agree with your point about the caves. For me the first hundred pages or so really dragged for me. But once I got past that hump, I flew through the book. Thanks for your great view points!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:39 pmThis review was actually very interesting. When the host first came out, I was hesitant to read it-most people were-mainly because there was no Edward or any beautiful, dazzling vampires. But this really got me thinking. Stephenie is an extra-ordinary author, and just because there’s not a particular character, a book can be magnificent if well written. Thank-you for making me realize that by not only incorporating your own opinion, but also of some people around you. Now, I’m absolutely going to read it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:47 pmi actually agree with you with the cave and the ending. i think i had my expectations for this book way too high because of twilight series.(which is the greatest books ive ever read)
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:47 pmbut i did enjoythe book very well.
I loved this book, I read it in a few days in it was awesome
)
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:49 pmyay! new entry!
The Host is awsome! And so is twilight!!!
Stephenie inspired me to be an author later on!!!(I’m 12)
I am writing Twilght Fan-Fiction.
A LOT of people say
1. “Dang! That’s a big book!” or:
2.”…why do you like to read!?”
My responce is this:
1.”No…it’s not big to a person that actually reads.”
2. “I love reading, you should try it somtime!”
Kids at middle school can be quite critical but especialy in 6th grade!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:54 pmAlso adults say I’m too young to read Twilight, or Host… but I can’t help it! It’s my passion.
(p.s I’m not a nerd!)
Please enter me in the contest. I haven’t read The Host yet but i can’t wait to.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:54 pmWow, the books sounds good. I actually don’t mind descriptions. If I don’t read for too long, my desire to read decreases (big time). I think I’ll read it. If I *ahem* WIN *cough* it, it’ll be much easier for me to be able to read it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pmI haven’t read The Host and haven’t decided if I should. I am not a Sci-Fi fan AT ALL, but I am a Stephenie Meyer fan; I’ll just have to wait and see what happens. It was nice to see that your review was unbiased, you didn’t gush over Meyer just because she has other well written books in publication.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:05 pmI definately know what you mean about it being 150 pages too long. The only other thing that really bothered me was that i felt the bond between Ian and Wanda (yeah, i can’t stand the name either..) was a little unsatisfying.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:13 pmI have this in my reading pile, but I have yet to read it. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it though. I am anxious to see personally, Stephenie’s writing in a different light.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:14 pmYou said you thought people will love The Host or hate it, but which side are you on? I liked it a lot myself. Being a huge fan of Twilight I do like that series better but I really liked the Host. I like how I really felt sorry for Wanderer even though she is a parasite and I felt bad for Mel at the same time. I love the relationships in the story and the way it makes one think of human nature.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:15 pmI have not read the host yet sadley…=[
I’ve been trying to get a copy into my hands..but the libreary that i go to does not have it on its shelves yet, but a friend of mine did tell my that she will let me borrow it once she is through (I feel bad because I rush her =P)
Your review of the book sounds familiar, I think it is a lot like what my friends have been saying.. i.e. the cave scene.
Great review though! =D
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:15 pmWe’ll have to wait and see if i agree with it though [;
I definately agree that The Host should have been shorter, but rather than throwing out 150 pages, I think I would’ve condensed the first 150 pages to 15 or 20.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:27 pmMost everything that happened in the beginning was important to the story, but it was slow and hard to get through. Once they got to the caves I flew right through it and refused to sleep until 8am when I finally finished the whole thing!
Like you, I also thought it was a bit long. (I even skipped some parts…ok, chapters) But I still really liked it. She has a way of writing that just makes you want to devour the book in one sitting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:28 pmi’ve never read the host before. all the libraries have huge waiting lists and don’t have enough money to buy it myself. i liked this review though. this is my kind of book… a clever story line, a little bit of romance, and lately, i’ve really liked reading about parinormal creatures. wow. this review made me just that more excited to actually read it. (well except the cave part but you can understand that ) thank you so much
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:47 pmHAHA i couldn’t help but laugh at the Star Trek connection! wow, i would’ve never know that. I agree with you that the book did drag on a bit and was TOO detailed. Im not too into reading Sci-fi either but the romance really tied it together. i loved the book a lot! so i happy to know there are others like yourself that enjoyed it as well.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:54 pmI was going to take this book out of the library, but the fine police caught me before I could smuggle it out the door (just kidding. I don’t smuggle things… per se). But now I’m going to have to.
The Star Trek parallel made me laugh. And yay! I love how Stephenie Meyer pulls the paranormal into human terms.
*Aella*
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pmI have been waiting for the Host to come out for a long time (not as much as Breaking Dawn, hehe) And when the first chapter came out on the website I was thrilled, but very confussed with the whole transfer thing that was goin on, so I stopped reading. I am now waiting to borrow it from my friend who said it was good. I did like your review because it cleared up a lot of what was going on. Thank you for your review, I am no longer confussed.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:20 pmLovely review~ You made me lol at the Star Trek connection, as did many other people.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:21 pmI agree that it did drag on a lot lot near the beginning/middle ish. It got a little (gasp) boring, but when I got to the end it seemed a little rushed, but very..riveting. (Did I use that work right? Lol)
I do think that The Host was a nice refresh from all the vampireness. It was really good, as good, or even better (double gasp) than Twilight!
I must admit, I’m a sci-fi fan and I’m excited about reading this book. As I was reading your connection to Star Trek, I thought of another sci-fi show that has the same type of body invasion…The X-Files. In this case, it was the opposite of a love story…what you would expect from this show. Anywho, my point is, the idea of a body invasion is a common theme in sci-fi. Adding the love story may not be so common.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:22 pmi read the host not knowing what it was and in the beginning, i had my doubts, but when i got deeper into the book it was amazing. i fell in love with all the characters and felt sympathy towards melanie and wanderer. this book was just great.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pmi haven’t read the host yet, but your review made me borrow it from the library today! and thank you for the warning about the first 150 pages being slow…i usually don’t read books that i can’t get into within the first 10 pages, but i’ll know to keep reading even if it does bore me a bit. and your summary of the story let me know what to expect, so thank you again!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pmFirst off I would like to mention I haven’t read the book yet. I have borrowed and read the Twilight series and actually loved it even though I am in my mid-twenties. I got excitied when I heard that The Host was more geared towards adults. Based on this review and others I think I may give it a shot. I have read a lot of paranormal romance books so maybe this book will be good. We will see !
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:40 pmI have not read the book yet, but i am going to. I have heard nothing but good reviews about the Host and am eager to read it. A bit of a turn off to me in your review is “a little too wordy and 150 pages to long.” That makes me think that I am going to be bored reading this particualr book, but I understand that this is your interpretation of your thoughts on the book. That was the only thing that turned me off to reading it… that was until i read the rest of your review and now i am very eager to read. Next stop… BORDERS! I have to get my copy!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:45 pmyou make such great points! I pretty much agree with everything you said especially the part about the caves. I read almost a book every or every other day and that part was the only part that made put it down!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:45 pmThe Host IS JUST A MASTERPIECE!!! I MEAN I CAN’T PUT IT DOWN!!! I TRY TO BUT I CAN’T! I always find myself reading till 12 a clock midnight!!! But even then i still wanna read it!!!!!! GREAT JOB!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:47 pmi havent read this one yet….but i plan to “D
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:02 pmHey! So I read this book in like 2 days… It was amazing. I think I liked it more than the Twilight series…well equally. They are both great. I could really relate to Wanda (Wanderer). Ian was the perfect guy, he cared about Wanda so much. I loved Jamie and Jeb too. Jeb believed her from the start. I loved how he could see the good in her.
I agree with you about the caves, that is where it really got interesting. There was alot of explaining and confusion in the beginning. The tag line is very true. I am not one for science fiction or aliens (they scare me) but, this was a whole different thing. Well, great review, thank you for holding that contest of yours.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:05 pmHi! I wanted to thank you for your review. I have not read The Host yet, which is why I liked your review. You described the book, but you didn’t give away any key parts..or important parts. You didn’t spoil it for me at all. I find it hard to find reviews on books where it’s spoil-free. Just the other day, my friend asked me if I knew what The Host was about..I told her what I knew, but it wasn’t much. Now that I’ve read yours, I can easily tell others what it’s about without ruining anything.
I also like that you didn’t praise the book completely. I love Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, but I also know that sometimes author’s will write a book that isn’t as good as their previous ones. I like that you kept The Host and the Twilight Series separate and reviewed The Host as a book alone. I will definately go buy the book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:16 pmI feel like Maw books have been invaded by alien bloggers. Holy cow!!! Free stuff brings people out of the woodwork.
I too stayed up to 2:30 am to finish the book. Then got up and went to the gym and that afternoon did my 3 years olds bday party. I think I deserve a medal. (for stupidity)
I like the Wanda character so much more that Bella. You could admire someone like Wanda. But Bella is a bit self absorbed. That doesnt mean I wont read the next book. Her writing is addicting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:21 pmDo NOT enter me in your contest.
I agree, the book was kind of lengthy. But in a good way. It gave me a reason to procrastinate studying
.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:24 pmAnyways, I like the Star Trek connection. I’ll have to go watch that episode now.
The cave thing bothered me too. Yes, its cool that Jeb basically made these caves himself, but after seeing too much of them, I started wishing for a look at the sky.
Overall, great review!!!
The Host was an amazing book! I found it a little confusing at first, but as it started to make sense, I couldn’t put it down!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:42 pmI have not been able to read this book yet but am waiting to try and raise some money to get it. I like how your review talks about the struggles of getting through the book but also talks about how after getting through the hurdle you are left with a good, hard to put down read. I am a bit disappointed to know about the similarities to the Star Trek episode but am hoping that the only similarity is the parasite and the parasite falling in love with a human I guess I’ll see when I get to read it. All in All I thought your review was really good, it touched the good and bad on the book and reflected on another persons opinion as well. Your review also touched on an important aspect (to me any ways) which is the similarities to the Star Trek episode including the name. GOOD JOB!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:46 pmI definitely agree that the first 100 or so pages at the beginning were confusing and she explained things a little too much. But at the caves it really got interesting I’ve really never have watched star trek but it did remind me of a book I had also read called Uglies. I also agree that it was a pain to read the name Wanda but oh well. I still don’t really know were to rank the Host. I feel that I won’t find a book better than Twilight but it was so good that it has to be at equal value. Anyway really great review.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:47 pmThe aliens ate my comment. Seriously, I just typed in a comment, and my computer did weird things, so I think it was lost.
So…I’m still not convinced that I want to read this book. Like you, I’m not a sci-fi fan…and worms? Eeeeeew. Of course, if I win a certain contest, I’d read it.
I think part of the reason I’m so ambivalent about this book is that I’m in denial over the Twilight series ending. I love Meyer’s vampires so much, I afraid to be disappointed by anything else she writes.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:56 pmI totally understand what you’re saying about when they enter the caves and how long they’re in there, and about after the ‘hurdle’.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:57 pmI too, finished very quickly after that. I loved the Host!!! Your review was interesting, thank you. Oh, I’m excited for the prize drawing! I really want to be entered into that contest, woo hoo. -for the host—’three hearts, two bodies’ and go Ian AND Jared!
I read Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse and LOVED them solely for EDCULLS. Stephenie Meyer really has terrible grammar and has trouble keeping her characters consitant and in character. I read the stories for Edward Cullen and there’s the possibility that I would read The Host to see if she could construe another character who might capture me as he does but I wouldn’t read it for her writing skills.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:59 pmLove this review!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:19 pmIt really cleared out about what THE HOST is really about.I have read Twilight and New Moon and I loved them both amazing.
I really really really want to read THE HOST now!!
This is a really good review! I haven’t read the Host yet, but I am definately looking forward to doing so once I get the book. I love science fiction novels, and I am really glad Stephenie wrote a book in the genre. This review had a great overview of the plot, and I can’t wait to read it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:25 pmI’m not worried about THE HOST seeming derivative of anything – I think parasitic hosts are actually a fairy common theme in SF. I can think of many movies, TV shows, and novels that have involved them.
For some reason, I’m really focusing on the Star Trek part of the review, mainly because my former roomie loved the show. She was like your mother-in-law and could remember random episodes in detail. It really surprised me one day when she started arguing with a bunch of CS boys about various points in Star Trek because she’s such a preppie, suburban type. ^_^ It’s always good to remember you can’t pin people down so easily.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:29 pmI agree with many points you made, such as the long and slow beginning. I was rather impatient throughout that part, but I pushed through it anyway (thank you, school-required readings!). I could also guess how this book was going to end, though I cried when she ‘died’. Yes, I’m a sap.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:33 pmThe ending, though somewhat predictable, still managed to end the book nicely. The message of the book was also conveyed quite well.
I absolutely loved this book. My friend, a fellow Twilight lover, and I went out to buy it the day it was released. It has a really interesting beginning, and at about Chapter 8, I got to the point where I could not put it down. I made a huge mistake of starting it around the time of finals, so i did not study for for my finals (or did only a little) because i was so hook on this book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:34 pmOne of the most interesting parts of The Host was the description of the other alien planets. Each planet was unique and well thought out. Characters in the novel ask many particular questions and Wanderer gives detailed answers. It is just mind-blowing how thorough these planets were imagined.
I loved the way it was in the perspective of the alien. Usually in sci-fis, aliens are shown as the enemy to be feared, but it is almost impossible to hate Wanderer. Though she is an alien, she is a character that is easy to relate to. She is so naive and innocent; she seems helpless. I was so torn between wanting Wanderer to live her cycle out as a human and wanting Melanie to have her body back. It is just such a fresh and unique situation.
I completely bawled my eyes out during the last two chapters. I had to actually put the book down so I could cry for about five minutes. It was just so emotional. About halfway through, I wondered, “Just how can this end happily”, but amazingly enough, it ends in a brilliant way.
Personally, I like Twilight more than The Host, but that is not to say The Host is not an amazing novel. Twilight is just so phenomenal it is on a whole other level. The Host is a good summer book to read by the pool or the beach.
I haven’t read it yet, but have only read rave reviews which seems to be the standard for her
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pmI haven’t had a chance to read this book yet but your review makes it seem rather intresting. I’m looking forward to reading it now.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pmI’ve yet to read the book but I have just borrowed it from someone and will be starting today. I’ve heard the same thing about when the characters get stuck in the caves. Apparently there is quite a lull between pages 60 and 200. Hopefully I will get past that and the similarities to Star Trek (: P) and enjoy the read. Thanks for the review! And I am entering in the giveaway contest btw.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pmwow I hope my post gets counted all the way down here…
anyways I came onto this to get my name in that hat again but now I really want to talk about the host. So here goes…
First off I must say that I agree with you about the ending being seen from a mile away, but as you said, that didn’t make it any worse.
I must say that for me the story picked up once they got in the desert. And although I love long books this was wordy.
And it reminded me of animorphs. Just the whole parasite in the brain stuff was just way too similar. Of course that was where the similarities ended.
I could go on and on about this book, but over all I think stephenie meyer proved tremendously that she could write a book without Edward bella and Jacob. Well done stephenie!
Please count this in the drawing. Thanks!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:47 pmHey! I need to read this book. I’ve read the Twilight Series and I’m sure I’ll love The Host too! I read the interview so I am positive!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:49 pmI agree that the Host was really good, although you are right about those first few pages being cut down a bit. There seemed to be a lot more of Wanda cowering than was necessary. I think I enjoyed it even more than Twilight, but I haven’t quite decided yet. The two are so different to me, it’s hard to compare them.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:12 pmi havent read this yet, but its sitting on my book shelf staring at me. Like literally the eye is staring me down.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:32 pmI agree somewhat with what you have said. But I reveled in the detailed descriptions instead of being bored by them. They helped me place myself in the environment, and relate to what the characters were going through. I’ve never been one much for the desert, but after reading this book I have a new appreciation for it and its beauty. Personally I enjoyed The Host more than the Twilight series. With the older characters I felt more comfortable with their reactions and actions. Twilight’s characters are teenagers, mature teenagers, but teenagers non the less. They still act on impulses and let their hormones get the better of them.(rarely) The Host’s characters were both physically and mentally more mature, and their feelings and thought processes reflected that. I just felt more comfortable with the more mature characters and could relate better, even though I am still a teenager. I never would have noticed the Star Trek connection if you hadn’t brought it to my attention. I find it to be an interesting coincedence, but no more. To me the concept and story are far enough seperate from anything else I’ve come in contact with that it is distinct and defined. I agree with the statement that The Host is a Science Fiction story for people who do not like Science Fiction. I believe your review was descriptive and your opinions well informed. Well done.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:37 pmI read somewhere that Stephenie Meyer got the worm idea from a dream she had where giant worms were stealing some children she knew. She said she used worms because humans would see them as scary but in the right context they could be seen as beautiful.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:40 pmPersonally, at first I thought that Wanda would split into baby worms at the end, but then remembered reading that she may write sequels, so that wasn’t really plausible. I also agree that she shouldn’t have been called Wanda.
I would love to be entered into the contest to win the Stephenie Meyer collection.
This is the first review that I’ve read for “The Host”. And now, I am more than excited to read it. However, I have to admit that I am a bit nervous about the caves part and ‘extra pages’. Thanks for the heads up!
When you mentioned that it was 2:30AM and you were still reading “The Host”, I couldn’t help but laugh. That’s how I was when I was reading the Twilight Series.
I just know that I will fall in love with “The Host”, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the book, (which is why I’m trying my best to do all eleven things and have my entries doubled for the giveaway!)
Great Review….It makes me want to read “The Host” so badly!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:50 pmThanks for the review!
I’ve been looking for a good review for this book that doesn’t just consist of “a good read”, “a breath taking story between…”, and so on and so forth.
It was nice to hear some negative aspects of the book as well as the positive.
I have still yet to read the book–to much activity this summer!
But thanks again for the “good review”, haha.
I’m looking forward to see what the results are for the book giveaway!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:01 pmI haven’t read The Host yet, but from your review I really do want to give it a try. But as you were saying before about the story getting a little boring, I can relate. I did that with The Vampire Diaries, but had to urge myself to continue reading it because I had already started it. Though the fact that you this book is similar to Star Trek really amuses me. I wouldn’t say that I’m a BIG Star Trek fan but just that I do enjoy watching the reruns, and gives me even more of a reason to read The Host. If the tag line being “Science Fiction for those who don’t like Science Fiction.” was found true to, then hopefully the same will apply to me.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:08 pmThis book was a little harder to get into than the Twilight saga but I loved it. The characters were so real and their reactions and emotions so believable. I cared for the characters and their relationships.
Please consider this an entry to your contest as well.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:22 pmwow! I it was a good review and it gave me an idea of what to expect when and if I read the Host. I am not a Star Trek fan so maybe I won’t see that comparison, but I am worried about it being too wordy. I hope to be able to read this book soon.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:24 pmI haven’t read The Host yet, but you have raised some interesting questions that gives me a little extra incentive to read the book. Meyer seems to rely heavily on emotions throughout the Twilight saga, and I would be interested to see how she deals with emotion in a more adult arena, with the added complications of having two minds in one body. However, I am a little turned off that you so definitely predicted the ending. I love a twisted end, and it doesn’t seem as though this delivers. Still, I wouldn’t turn down an opportunity to read this one.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:41 pmI am definitely not a BIG fan of sci-fi, but The Host was so different. It kept me awake for hours, it made me cry A LOT, It made me want more. I fell in love with Ian even though, Jared is supposed to be the one everyone loves, I also really liked Kyle even though he was the bad guy. Just how Stephenie write is… i don’t know. It’s amazing. She can make good out of bad i guess.
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:13 ami really very much agree that i wasn’s sure stephenie could write a book without edward and bella and i wasn’t sure if i could read one by stephenie without them but i agree that she has done a fabulous job!! i also really like that you added the science fiction for people who don’t like science fiction thing! i also agree that i thought it was too long and the beginning was kinda too descriptive but it was still good!! good review i like that you aired alot of your opions!! thanks!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:25 amHmm, I have been a bit skeptical on starting this book, because it’s not really my genre. But because I admire Stephenie Meyer so, and I know how great of a writer she is, I might give it a try. It also may take a little for me to get into it, but I will indeed try.
That is, as soon as I get it for myself. Because, like I said in the other comment, I don’t have it and my sister won’t let me touch her copy. Hah.
Shows you all the appreciation me and my sisters have for Stephenie. Truly great writers can reach out to many people, and many didn’t groups of people, like Mrs.Meyer has attempted. Kudos, Stephenie. Keep up all this amazing talent of yours!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:31 amI was able to post this the first time..so here we go.
I disagree with a majority of what you posted. I think that she did need to give as much information as she did or it would have been very confusing and I do think that every page was significant to the book. Whether they be bridges to significant parts, or significant parts themselves.
I found that the ending was not as predictable as later on in the book. Yes, Melanie would become great friends with Wanderer and later on it became obvious…but it was not as predictable. Wanderer does have a bit of a stubborn side about her even though she is quite peaceful. There is such a thing as predicting the ending because it is what you want, and never looking at it is as unpredictable because that is the only way you could see it.
Star Trek being like The Host…that’s a load if I do say so, no offense. The only similiarity is what we call ‘posession’. I found The Host to be much more interesting than Twilight in places, in others not so much. But every page was worthy of it’s height.
This review is honest and written well, unlike my post here which shows many rambles. I enjoyed reading it even though I disagreed.
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:50 amI am not a fan of science fiction, but being a loyal follower of Stephenie, I’m willing to give The Host a try. Now I haven’t read The Host yet, but your observations and questions have intrigued me, and given me further incentive to read the book. Hopefully when I start reading the book (that is as soon as my local library gets their orders in) I’ll get just as in to it as I did with the Twilight Saga.
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:04 amI would love it if this counted as an entry in your giveaway!
I love THE HOST. It was awesome! I finsihed reading the book in two days and i had to go to school too. I can’t wait until the sequel!!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:22 amI am not a Sci-Fi fan at all but it being a book by Ms. Meyer I would really like to be able to read it. I have reserved this book in the library but so many people are trying to borrow it so Im still on the waiting list. Also, reading your review made me interested even more. I guess its not just all about vampires for Stephenie Meyer and thats what excites me!
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:27 amI appreciate reviewers who aren’t afraid to give both sides of the story – what appeals to them and what doesn’t – without being nasty about it. I think you did a fine job of stating the pros and cons of this book, as you see them. I can’t wait to read it for myself.
on June 17th, 2008 at 3:34 amWhat an in-depth review. I listened to a Podcast interview with Stephenie Meyer where she did discuss THE HOST a few months before it’s release. She said that she didn’t write THE HOST intentionally as sci-fi but more as the love story that you mentioned. She said that the publishers had to categorize it somewhere and because it was about aliens invading humans and Planet Earth, they put in Science Fiction. I just finished TWILIGHT and LOVED IT!! I am very interested in reading this book and actually recommended it to a friend of mine the other week based on the Podcast and she went out an bought it right away.
on June 17th, 2008 at 3:42 am(Please throw my name in the hat for your SM giveaway!)
When the Host first came out I wasn’t going to read it. I was kinda worried that it would be as good as the others. But then I said come on this is Stephenie Meyer we’re talking about. She writes great books. And I wasn’t let down. The Host was awsome. I loved Ian.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:27 amSounds like an interesting premise, but 150 pages too long? Bleh! I’m not sure why, but I haven’t had a strong desire to read any of her books. I was going to leave a comment on your other blog, but there are so many already! I’m not entering, but I did email a friend (a sort of nonblogger), so I hope she comes by to comment.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:51 amI’m still not sure about this book. I’m not afraid of science-fiction, I’m just not sure it’ll live up to the feelings that the Twilight series evoked for me. Maybe once that series is over and I give it some time, I’ll pick up this book. Maybe.
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:05 amInteresting review. I have to agree with you on some points about the part of the book when they’re in the cave. To me that seemed to lag on, and I found myself longing to “see” new surroundings. I myself, am not much of a sci-fi reader , because I have trouble making my mind believe certain things in sci-fi books. That being said I don’t get much pleasure from movies or television programs of that genre either, so as you can imagine I did not make the connection with Stephenie Meyer and the Star Trek episode.
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:55 amI very much liked the ending of the Host. I thought ahead of time, that it might end like that, but then her (Wandas) request stomped out that flame of hope. Ahh, but Stephenie tricked me again. And I’m glad she did, I was really tearing up.
I think my favorite part of the book was right before she was going to go under the knife, and she was saying her goodbyes to Mel. It was so emotional and actually had me tearing up.
I love the message in this book about the whole “I’ll love you no matter what” phrase, and how it is put into play in this book between Wanda (oh that was the other thing, her name reminded me of the character from The Fairly Odd Parents…kind of ruined it for me) and Ian (I love Ian as much as Edward
I tried to comment yesterday, but I don’t think it worked, so I’ll try again! Now, what did I say? My short review for The Host is: “She did it again!” Yes, I loved it. It didn’t drag at all for me. I think the whole premise is great. I didn’t remember the Star Trek thing until seeing it here. Now I remember it. Kinda cool I think.
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:08 amI’m reading The Host right now. I’m glad it’s sci-fi for those who don’t do traditional sci-fi. Otherwise, I might not be reading it. I don’t remember that Star Trek episode, maybe it was one of the few I haven’t seen.
(please count this in the drawing!)
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:00 amGreat review. I try not to read reviews before an anticipated book or movie cuz I don’t want to have expectations. I think you were right on in your description of the novel. We obviously all love the Twilight series, and were expecting something similiar. But, how can anything ever live up to that? It can’t.The Host was a great book, it just wasn’t Twilight. Thanks for the Star Trek comparison. Quite interesting.
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:09 amI read The Host and yes I agree, you can write a book without Edward and Bella in it. I loved The Host a lot, but not as much as the twilight series. It is the best science-fiction book I have ever read!! I hope you continue to write plenty more books since Breaking Dawn will be the end to the Twilight Series , but you will also be writing Midnight Sun which will be really cool because I already read the first chapter on your website and it is really awesome!!!! Continue to write fabulous books!!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:11 amI thought “The Host” was good. No Wait… beyond good. I have a special place in my heart for the “Twilight” series, but I love “The Host” just as much. There are two compartments in my heart. One labeled: “Twilight”; and the other “The Host”. Lovin’ them both (have loved, will love forever…). I think that it was loaded down with words, but those word were necessary. ALL. OF. THEM. It illustrated the emotions, reactions and motives that we needed to see/read; while she still leaves some things to the imagination.
The gist: Read it.
You might not love it, but you need to read it to call yourself a Meyer fan.
P.S. I really do love Ian.
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:34 amThe Host was an awesome book, but I prefer the Twilight Series. I really liked the name Wanderer and it just broke my heart when they changed it to Wanda.
P.S. This is my post!
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:46 amThe Host was an amazing book. Stephenie Meyer did it again. Not only with the supernatural but with romance also. I recommend this book to young adults and older. You will be blown away.
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:55 amit sounds interesting but i’m on the fence i dont know if it would be something i would want to read but then again i almost want to read it just to see what it’s lioke for my self.
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:10 am*like sorry
and the review is intersting comparing the book to star trek, wasnt really a fan of the show tho…
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:12 amYou have done a very lovely review on the host. I’m so excitied to read it.
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:39 amYour review made me really want to read The Host. It’s been on my list to read for a few weeks and now I want to read it even more.
I like that you were honest about feeling as thought it were 150 pages too long. Sometimes when an author is popular it seems like people feel they HAVE to give a 100% A+ review. It was nice that you enjoyed the book and made it sound like a really good read, but also gave an honest opinion about it.
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:58 amThe Host is absolutely amazing. It was emotional in some ways, but also incredible. When I first read about Ian.. I would have never thought.. But, now I love him!
I recommend this to anyone who’s up for adventure, love, and Stephenie Meyer! Haha.
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:43 amI haven’t made up my mind about this book yet. It may be one of those that I don’t read unless it falls across my path.
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:57 amWhen i was reading it, i got pretty into it, i do agree that there was a lot of unnecessary description. I really thought about it,im not the biggest fan of it. but it was a really good read. and i would for sure recommend it. i pretty much agree to everything you wrote. very good review for the host
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:22 pmThanks for the warning about sticking it out… I tend to be stubborn and stick it out, but sometimes when a book drags I will put it away for a long time before finishing it… but as a Trekkie I’m a bit more interested because of the similarity… I’ll want to be able to compare it!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:30 pmOMG I LUV THIS CONTEst! im a big big FAN Of STEPHENIE MEYER AND ALL HER BOOKS! THIS CONTEST IS GREAT PLEASE ENTER ME IN ! YOU GUYS/ GIRLS ROCK! AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:34 pmWow you write really good reviews! (and im NOT just saying that for the contest though i do want to win) I liked your review cause it was like a summary of the book mixed in with your comments about it. I totally agree wiht you on the caves part! i got kinda bored as well…that coudve been cut. haha and reading that when you finished the book it was liek 2:30 am made me laugh! thats exaclty what happened to me! except i think it was like 3:00 AM cause i started reading late. anyways thats all. ^-^ oh thats cool that there was an episode of Star Trek that was like The Host. it seems interesting mayeb ill check it out on youtube. ^-^
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:37 pmNice Review
JK I agree with the wordy part. I’m only on,like, the third chapter and zI already think she needs to cut to the cahse but it is preety goo so far. I also don’t really like Sci-fi so when I first saw the book(I didn’t know Stephenie was the author, I was just browsin Hotbooks.com and I saw it) and I saw the “science fiction for people who don’t like Science Fiction” I was like “i’ll be the judge of thaqt but like I said it is pretty good so far :
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:58 pmI’m really sorry. That above message was poorly typed. I didn’t look over it and I didn’t see how many typing errors I made. I’m very sorry. I think you can still read it though right?
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:01 pmSorry last message!
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:02 pmThe above review is my Win Stephenie’s books thing! I just did #2. Movin’ on to 3
Oh I want to read this book! It looks complicated and mysterious at the same time, and I’m really curious to discover what the story is. Thank you for making this review, it convinced me to buy it because I was not really sure if I’d like it before I read your post.
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:18 pmI didn’t read the Host yet, but by your review, I can tell it is gonna be good.
You seem to be a very good reader (like me). If you love a book, you will stay up in the morning just to find out what will happen (like I did). You find yourself talking about the book online, with friends, or even to yourself (like me).
Good job!
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:29 pm(please enter my name in the contest for the Twilight series. Thank you!)
Great review! I like how you really didn’t reveal too much for those who haven’t read it yet.
To be entirely honest, I was hesitant to begin reading this book, mainly because my friend who read it said it was an “alien romance.” I’m not one for aliens, but then again, I wasn’t one for vampires before Stephenie Meyer either. Now, I’m a fan of both, but only if they are done correctly, and Stephenie Meyer does an amazing job with them.
I thought it was very well done and agree with most of what you said in the review. The questions it raised about love and being human really made me think.
I thought the ending was a bit predictable as well. I just didn’t see any other way that it could have ended after all the special connections she developed with the humans.
I have to disagree though about it being too long. I thought it was just the right length. I loved all the details and thought it improved the story making it easier to picture. I too was anxiously waiting for them to leave the cave, and thought they spent too much time down there.
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:31 pmSorry, I didn’t mention that I don’t want to be entered in the contest.
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:51 pmI love Stephanie Meyer’s books. But this isn’t even close to how good the twilight saga is.
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:02 pmIt is still good.
I like the way you explained yourself and that you could give the plot without taking the secrest out
=]
At first, I just found this book down right depressing with the end of the human race, a defeated resistance, etc.
, although I still prefer Twilight
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:27 pmBut then I started to enjoy it
I have to admit- I’m a bit scared to read The Host.
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:55 pmI have such high expectations for it! But I definately will now.
Thank you for the article.
I still haven’t read anything by Meyer, but this review made me REALLY intrigued. I’m really planning to read the entire Twilight series sometime in the future, but now I’m thinking I’ll pick up The Host first. If I could just find the time… darn TBR pile!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 3:17 pmi strongly disagree that it was too long! i loved the detail. every word totally fit, in my opinion. i wouldnt have minded another 30 pages of it! Stepa genius
on June 17th, 2008 at 3:22 pmI started reading “The Host” but i never finished it. I agree it was a little to wordy, especially the first 4 chapters.
on June 17th, 2008 at 4:39 pmI agree.
I would have liked it more if it was cut down.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:00 pmIt was hard for me to just keep reading, and not drift off to something else.
i loved this book! the twilight series is by far my favorite and ive read all of them at least ten times. the host, however, is just as good if not better than the series. the love story was so deep and phenominal i refused to put the book down until i read it in its entirety. it was a reminder that if the name stephenie meyer is on a book, than its definately worth reading.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:09 pm“I do think The Host was a good 150 pages too long and too wordy. There seemed to be a lot of unnecessary descriptions and I wish it was cut down. A lot.”
I completely agree. As an avid reader, I was a bit frustrated with some of the unnecessary descriptions. However, I look at it this way: this is Stephenie’s first time to wander into this genre and especially for an adult audience. She got a little carried away but that essence we have all come to love was still there. You could tell in the description of the characters themselves.
Anyways, those are my two cents on Stephenie’s first adult-based novel.
I would also like to request to be added to the contest. Thank you!
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:37 pmI haven’t read it yet. Still waiting on my copy from the library.
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:23 pmI haven’t read it yet either. I’m waiting for my sister to finish. ^^
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:42 pmThis book just came to me via my book club that I use when I just can’t wait for the library or swap. I really appreciate the thoughts you put down and the questions you raised. I do get tired of reading short and non-critical reviews. You have raised my interest in the book. . .
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:50 pmI actually think that people reading The Host should put the author out of their heads while reading it. People are so used to Twilight that they seem almost disappointed in the weirdness of this novel. I do admit I did the same thing and until the cave part, I was almost itching to put it down and write it off as a failure. I’m glad I didn’t, because this novel is excellent and beautifully written.
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:05 pmI don’t know if I have to say this here, but I’d like to be entered into the giveaway
Anyways, I completely agree about the Host being too long. The first couple hundred pages I was very sad, thinking the Twilight series was a one time thing, because I was honestly bored. But when it finally started picking up, I loved it.
I also agree on the fact that it basically is science fiction. I’m not sure how it’s science fiction for people who don’t like it, because, well, it’s just science fiction lol. Anyway, thanks for the review!
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:33 pmSounds pretty interesting! I haven’t had the chance to read it yet but I certainly am planning on doing so very soon. Thanks for the great review!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:43 pmYour review really makes me want to get the host and read it!! I sadly havent had a chance yet! Once i get the money I will then comment again on whether i agree with you or not
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:27 pmI agree with you on your opinion of the caves, but rather, I found it a bit more interesting. The story starts off really slowly, and just a

on June 17th, 2008 at 8:29 pmtad long and tedious, but Stephenie Meyer really pulls it all together. I loved the Host, it was really a phenomenon.
And that’s curious about the Star Trek episode.
But, I still like Stephenie Meyer’s version better
I also liked how it was long, I disagree with you at that point. The longness made it more..interesting, even if it was too detailed. It paints a very vivid picture in my mind and I like that. Besides, if it was short, I would be groaning that it was too short, because I would still wonder. I guess the details are for people like me
But anyways, this was a really great review, keep writing them. Your output on it is interesting :]
I have not actully read the Host but I have read the exerp on Mrs. Meyer’s website and I loved it. I thought it was extremely interesting! I can’t wait to read the entire book!
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:36 pmI haven’t read The Host yet, but it sounds amazing! You’re good at reviewing, this wasn’t as boring as some others that I’ve read =]
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:46 pmThanks for such a great review! I’ve been dying to read this book. Stephenie Meyer is such a great writer…..her books are such page-turners!
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:57 pmI couldn’t agree with you more about The Host being a little too wordy. It seemed slow at a lot of different points, and I’m just happy to say that Stephenie is such a good writer that that fact didn’t bother me too much. Great review! I agree with most all of your points!
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:00 pmi think the host seemed a little slow and repeted in some parts but other then that it was a very good book
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:33 pmI love science fiction, and I definitely would like to read this book. I have a hard time with wordiness at times, but other times I think it’s appropriate. Guess I’ll have to see!
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:03 pmThe Host is definitely worth the read! I got it from the library and i admit at first, I wasn’t that hooked but after i read more into the book I couldn’t put it down.I also thought it was a little wordy (is that how u spell it?)at some parts but i got over it haha. Awesome review.
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:32 pmThanks for doing the super amazing give away!!!
I haven’t had the chance to read The Host yet, but reading this review, it sounds interesting! It’s nice that you put in so much thought in the review and want to inform other people about it. Can’t wait to read it!
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:11 pmGreat review–I completely agree with everything you said! I cringed at the name “wanda”. I don’t know why, it just didn’t seem right to me. And I also completely predicted the ending, and I NEVER predict anything correctly! But I also agree that I loved the book, and as soon as I read everything else I’m trying to get through, I will definitely go back and re-read The Host. I’ve had such a hard time convincing people to read The Host because it doesn’t pick up as quickly as her other books. I loved the story though, and the idea of the aliens thinking they were doing good because we as a species are killing our environment and are typically violent and angry. I loved the concept of the book, and I would love for Stephenie to further explore her writing expertise! (after she finishes with the whole twilight thing, of course!) Anyways, a great book, and to anyone who hasn’t read it yet, DONT GIVE UP!
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:25 pmI’m actually trying to read The Host myself. I’ve had it with me for the last two days, trying to get myself to read it but giving up soon after. I’m kinda glad I’ve read the review since I started to doubt if it was even worth reading(It’s soooo long!). Now, I’m actually going to start reading it right away, it will take me forever (Im a slow reader) but I’ll do it!
on June 18th, 2008 at 1:36 amWOW…your grandmother is right! *Hi grandma from an icky ol’ hospital in RI* Now I have to find out if it’s love or hate for me, win or lose…is it that much like “The Host” Star Trek episode..my father used to make me watch it every week when I was a child and he remembered it too… now I have to find out if YA can go Adult. I NEED TO KNOW. Thanks so much for putting this into perspective for me…and “THE HOST” show that is long in my past! You’re wonderful as always, keep me in your prayers! xo Amy in the Hospital in RI xo … celebrating her birthday here again. Thank you ALL so much for caring for me and for being so nice to the girls helping keep the blog up so very nicely. (Because they really have no idea, but I love them so…like all of you) xoxo Sorry to take up too much space!
on June 18th, 2008 at 1:41 ami also havnt read the host yet (it sucks to be 16 and jobless) but your review did not give that much away so thankyou because some reviews i read think its a good idea to tell you the ending of the story umm …why?
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:27 ami understand what you mean about unnecessary descriptions, they sometimes appear in twilight but i think it kinda gives you a more vivid picture of whats going on or what something looks like or it could just be one of the most boring things to read evvvverrr. thankyou for your review it was “nice” only joking i especially liked the part about how it brings up some quistions like Can two people love the same person and continue to co-exist in the same body together? lol that was my favourite , ugh i know what you mean about the name wanda i just keep thinking of candy floss and i fish for some reason x
I haven’t read The Host yet… *sigh* I’ll have to go pillage the library… again… This is what comes of having no money.
Actually, I had kinda forgotten this book even existed, so thanks for reminding me.
#2 on contest checklist = done.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:02 amHonestly, I couldn’t get past the first chapter. I just couldn’t make myself get into it. I don’t know if it was due to it not being Twilight, or if even “Science Fiction for people who don’t like Science Fiction” is still science fiction to my mind (I haaaate science fiction).
But I do agree that (from what I read) Stephenie really did go into A LOT A LOT of detail that didn’t really need that much detail.
(and #2 checklist is done
)
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:55 ami never thought about the whole star trek thing before. thanks for pointing it out. but honestly i love the host all the way! when i read it i was squealing just as bad as i was for the twilight series. (caves or not) i love it! i couldn’t stop reading it. anyways. you brought up some nice questions .. they’ll leave me pondering for a while. btw.. if you could enter me to win all of stephenie meyer’s books i would greatly appreciate it! thanks again!!!
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:08 amI think you did an excellent job in this report. I like knowing the negative as well as the positive about a book. It does not deter me from reading it, but makes me look forward to seeing whether or not I agree with your viewpoint. I don’t usually read Science Fiction or anything that looks like it, but your report has piqued my interest in this book by Stephenie Meyers.
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:21 amThe Host was an amazing book and your post describes it well. Also, consider me to win all the grand prize. Checklist #2
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:47 amYou’re right, it was too wordy, i couldn’t stand the name Wanda either, i thought it was so stupid (the nickname not the book). Maybe i’m stupid but i didn’t see the end coming until Mel stopped being there the one time.
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:16 amI loved this book. I disagree with you, only a little. I think the descriptions made it so perfect…I could not put it down. But, I have to agree, Wanda? Ew. I hate that name.
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:47 amOkay so I started reading The Host but the truth is I didn’t really understand it I stopped reading it and i’m going to read it this year now but I stopped because in 13 and I guess it wasn’t really clear to me? But other then that I LOVED all of your other books!
on June 18th, 2008 at 12:35 pmI hadn’t before considered reading this book due to the sci fi theme. However since you said you made it through it I will give the book a chance. I also thought your Star Trek ref. was funny and I totally think Stephenie must be a star trek fan! Please Enter Me In the Giveaway!
on June 18th, 2008 at 1:30 pmI haven’t been able to get my hands on a copy of the host since all the copies at the library are taken and my inability to put a copy on hold due to the fact that the password was lost. I only read one other review it talked about how slow the book was and that it wasn’t very good. I still wanted to read it since it was by Stephanie Meyer but I was still a bit hesitant. Now that I know the whole thing isn’t slow I’m much more excited to read it.
on June 18th, 2008 at 2:45 pmAt first, I was a little hesitant in reading The Host but I decided, “WE=ell, is Stephenie Meyer wrote then why not give it a shot!” so I did and it was well worth the read. I’ve seen a lot of people comparing it to Eclipse and some saying it’s better. The jury’s still out for that verdict. I think both stories are interesting in their own right and it’s hard for me to compare the two. But as I thought about it and tried to compare the two, I realized The Host was like Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse all rolled into one. It has that forbidden and just overall romance of Twilight. It has that bit os depression and despair of New Moom and it has the obvious love triangle (although wouldn’t it technically be a rectangle in this case?) that Eclipse has. So that’s pretty much what I think. It’s a fantastic novel and though there does seem to be too much detail, it’s still fabulous overall. And if you’ve read the Twilight series, it might not be the best thing to try and compare the. The series is different from The Host and it deserves it’s own credit, not to be shadowed with Twilight. Great review! It was nice to see Stephenie being completely praised.
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pmi havent read the host yet, but all my friends said it was kinda confussing, but REALLY good. when i read your review, was like, okay i totally get this
except for the wanda part…..why wand- OHHHH! wanda-wanderer. DUH! ha. wow. anways, mi liked your review, im sure i’ll understand tyhe book a lot easier than my friends can HA!
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pmAs soon as found out that Stephenie Meyer was writing another book, I swore that I would be one of the first to get my hands on it. I bought it the day it came out and read and read and read until I was done with it two days later.
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:10 pmI really, truly loved this book and I was glad to see Stephenie Meyer writing something else, aside from the oh-so-wonderful Twilight series. From the moment Wanda met him, I adored Ian. The entire book I sat there, reading, wanting for them to get together and I was sooo happy when they finally did.
I really liked reading your review of the book because it gives a bit of the negative insights of the book, instead of only positive. I agree that it was a little wordy, but I found it alright to get through, once you really got into the book. A few things are still a bit unclear to me, but I think that, once I read it again, it will become clearer.
Thanks so much for your review! Please enter me into the contest!
I totally agree with you. All of Stephenie’s previous books have been glued to my hands, and The Host was much easier to put down, I even found myself snoozing at some parts. All and all though “The Host is definitely worth trying.”, just as you said. Great review! This has been one of the most informative I have read, I even got a lesson on Star Trek!
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:12 pmI was sooo excited once I got my hands on The Host!!! I read it in 3 days! I cried soooo much but it was a great book and I loved it. I love Jared and Ian!! =)
on June 18th, 2008 at 4:20 pmi havent read the host yet,
on June 18th, 2008 at 4:37 pmbut i really want to.
at first i wasnt sure if i really wanted to read a book by stephenie meyer with edward and bella in it, but after reading your review i think i am going to give it a try.
great review !
I will be the first to admit that, yes, I am a nerd. One of the biggest of them all, in fact.
Along with one of my friends, I started the Meyer revolution at my school and I was fascinated and astounded to see it grow as fast as it did. The phenomenon just exploded, it was just like, I woke up one day and “BAM!” it was everywhere.
I have yet to read “The Host” (stupid summer reading projects, grrr…) but it’s next on my list.
on June 18th, 2008 at 4:57 pmWell, this is one of my favorite topics! I would love to say I would have picked up The Host on my own, but I’m not sure I would have looked at it twice if I didn’t know who Stephenie Meyer is (if I lived under a rock). I guess that is a good thing, because besides the Twilight saga, The Host is my favorite book. I hope I am not being biasied because Stephenie is my favorite author.
The Host: I think of it as a science fiction book for non science fiction fans. It shows a diferent side to the apocalypse, almost a peaceful side, I like this because instead of following the crowd, The Host shows something not alot of people have thought about. It sucks you into the story from page one and still hasn’t let me go; I finished it about a week after it came out. I still think about it almost everyday.
The Host showed everyone that Stephenie Meyer is not just a one hit wonder, meaning that she can’t only write one genre, one story, and one set of characters. This excites me beyond belief because I hope to see her book for many years to come!
on June 18th, 2008 at 5:20 pmAlright so I read the Host and I liked it, not as much as Twilight, but still. And I don’t watch Star Trek, but that was a very good comparison.
on June 18th, 2008 at 6:23 pmThe caves part was indeed slightly tedious. But I’m an avid reader so I’m glad I pulled myself through that. Haha.
It doesn’t bother me if she got her inspiration from this episode. But it’d be really freaky if she had never heard about this episode. Whoa.
The review was great, hope I’m being put down for the giveaway, as I am following all of the steps on your list. Thanks.
Loved the review. I agree with your opinions for the most part, just a few differences. I thought you were right about the book being a bit wordy and just not needing a few chapters but really, when I think back, even what seemed to be unneeded set the tone and added to what we knew. I just think Meyer maybe isn’t quite as good as Rowling in the long descriptions which made things feel slow paced. I like sci-fi and the soul idea was interesting if not original (Heh, Star Trek) and the whole book was questioning humanity and what it means to be human. So I agree with your comments on that.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:17 pmI didn’t think I was going to like the host at all and I even put off reading it for a while but in the end I actually really enjoyed it. By the end of the book I really cared for Wanderer. I agree I dislike the nickname Wanda and if Meyer writes more I hope she doesn’t use it again but that’s doubtful. The beginning felt long and it probably was 100 pages too long but I’m really glad I read it. It was very different from other books I read and I’m glad that I gave it a chance.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:33 pmI bought the Host the day it came out, and I fell in love. It is right up there with Twilight. Loved the video on Star Trek, but I never really liked that show, probably because I never really got into it.I loved your take on humanity and worms.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:48 pmI first heard about The Host when I was browsing books on Amazon. I didn’t realize Meyer was the author until I had already glanced at the summary and decided I’d like to read it.
It did run a little long. However, the two questions I took from it are the same you had: the idea of loving two people in one body and what it means to be human. Although Meyer didn’t go as deep as she could have on that subject, it was definitely an interesting idea to ponder.
The souls took away the violence from our world, didn’t need money (rather did “inventory” at stores), cured diseases, and overall seemed to improve our world. Since you are reading from a soul’s perspective, you tend to be more sympathetic to them and have their opinions; as I was reading, I asked myself, “What’s so bad about these souls?”
I realized it was silly to think that, since I’m human and wouldn’t necessarily want someone to just take over my body and mind. So it really makes you wonder, does being human constitute violence and disease? Or is it that those travesties are there, and we as humans try to rise above them and be a good person IN SPITE OF those things, rather than because of, as the souls do?
on June 18th, 2008 at 8:02 pmhmmm, for me it was different, i couldn’t put the book down. I’m not sure, but everything that happened in the cave interested me, that i loved it so much! I guess it’s because that’s where Wanderer found out about all kinds of human love! =] And i have to say that i fell in love with Ian, hes Hmm i don’t exactly feel the same way about the Host. You said you could put the book compassion….is just amazing *sigh* All in all i LOVE the Host. It was one of the best science fiction books i have read, haha maybe that’s becuase it’s my first one! *shhhh*
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:39 pmWow! i didn’t know that Star Trek and the Host had those similarities. Either way though i think the Host is a great book!
I think though Stephenie Meyer didn’t notice that either, but who knows, someone needs to ask her =]
So i say your review is one of the best ones i have read! =]
[[Contest]] #2 Done! *Check* =]
Ahahaha, I love how you related Star Trek into this. It’s my favorite thing to geek out about! Even though I haven’t read it yet (hardcover books are expensive, but yay for this contest), it added a certain allure to it. And I get what you’re saying. It’s weird how little things – even inadvertently – can influence one’s endeavors so heavily. One last thing: isn’t it Riker, not Ryker? Maybe a worm is in my brain that’s confusing me
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:07 pmI loved The Host! All the description that Stephenie put in helped me connect more with the characters.
The intake I got from reading The Host is that love really concurs all. Melanie’s love for Jared and Jamie was what didn’t let her “fade away”, her love for these two humans was so strong that even being “invaded” couldn’t crush it, it just was in a way shared by Wanderer and her. Also, how Ian loves Wanderer. He loves her for her, not because of the body she is in, but because of the way she is. Even though she is not the same species as he is, he tells her that she looked beautiful as the “little worm” after the transplant. Those examples are nothing but the definition of what true love is. And well lets not forget of Edward and Bella.?sigh?
Though many readers seem to hate some of the characters for example:
Wanderer – for taking over Melanie
Jared – for disliking them(wanderer&mel)
Kyle – for being evil
I actually loved all of them from the very beginning, because without them behaving or being the way they were from just the beginning or throughout the whole story, The Host would have been lifeless. Even in the Twilight saga there had to be characters that caused trouble and even though the reader hated them at times, without them the reader wouldn’t feel as attached to the characters.
I enjoyed reading your review. It was different than others I have read, but I liked your intake of the story. I’m going to have to see that Star Trek episode ?. Contest #2
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:36 pmMy daughter, who doesn’t read much, just finished this book! She could not put it down! She read every minute that she was awake!! She loves all of these books!
on June 19th, 2008 at 5:15 amPlease enter me in contest
I haven’t read The Host yet because I don’t have it…oh and because I am still obsessed with reading Twilight over and over again! It sounds like a fantrastic book…I hope I win so I can read it
on June 19th, 2008 at 7:34 amwow….. I didn’t know about the star trek episode, and i used to watch it with my parents lol. But, I really did love the book. The first 100 pages or so goes reall slow but after that I fell in love =D I couldn’t put the book down. I loved how stephenie described the feelings of wanda and melanie together in one body, it made me relate more to the characters better. And my god could Jared be anymore mean, and could Ian be anymore clingy. well all I got to say is I can’t wait for the sequel which is rumored to be almost done. I can’t wait
on June 19th, 2008 at 1:02 pmI’ve read Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series a few months ago and fell in love with it, like most others.
However, I did recognize and acknowledge that it was just the intensity of Edward and Bella’s relationship that really kept me tagging along with the books. Without it, I do believe the books would not have had much success.
I thereby presumed that “The Host” was going to be of a similar style, as in having a general plot in the background, while focusing on a single aspect (like a relationship) all throughout the story, despite it being Stephenie’s attempt at an adult novel.
This review was quite helpful, mostly because it doesn’t just state generic aspects of the book and is more personal than those found on commercial websites, etc.
on June 19th, 2008 at 2:34 pmI read “The Host” and I thought it was amazing.I agree with alot of what you said. I wasn’t sure how I could read it though with Twilight on my mind all the time. At first it was hard to get into it but after a while it was hard to put it down and I also found myself reading until 2:30 in the morning. So i was rather impressed with it and I think Stephenie Meyer is a wonderful author. Great Review!!
on June 19th, 2008 at 2:37 pmDue to unfortunate school circumstances, I haven’t gotten to read “The Host” yet, but I’m getting to it. I actually stood in the middle of Borders (while shopping for school books) and read part of it. I got a lot of strange looks. I think everyone thought I was pretty insane (not too far from the truth, actually)
I agree with waht Travis P. said. When people pick up “The Host” to read it they think “Hey, this was written by Stephenie Meyer. Didn’t she write those wonderful ‘Twilight’ books?” and they expect the exact same thing. But this is an entirely new genre and a completely new novel. Take it for what it is, not what you think it should be. If you’re going to criticize her books, then don’t read them. It’s a form of entertainment, don’t freak. OK?
Well, that’s enough rambling form me. Bye!
on June 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pmOne of the girls I work with has said that, although she likes the book, it is hard to get into and isn’t is good as the Twilight Saga. I think that maybe that’s the problem a lot of people have with it – in the backs of their minds, they were constantly comparing it to Twilight. In addition, though, I’ve heard there’s lots of background and so you have to be a bit patient with it. I thought the first Harry Potter book was hard to get through, as well, but look how that ended up!
Anyway, I would love to read the book and hope to do so soon.
on June 19th, 2008 at 4:56 pmI read most of the review, but it had too many spoilers for my taste XP I like not knowing what books are about at all until I’m done with them. Stephenie Meyer is amazing: Science Fiction for Dummies, essentially. It makes the genre a heck of a lot less scary.
on June 19th, 2008 at 9:46 pmI haven’t read this yet but I would love to! As soon as I get to the library this summer it’s going to be the first book I check out.
on June 20th, 2008 at 10:48 amI like most of the review. All things are suggestive I personally couldn’t put the book down from beginning to end. When your reading
on June 20th, 2008 at 10:51 amStephenie you have to remember that when a sentence will do a paragraph is better.
I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet, I am still finishing up the Twilight Series, but this is a great review with many excellent points. I want to check out the book as soon as I get a chance!
on June 20th, 2008 at 11:36 ami am seriously in love with this book i really hope there is a sequel because she kind of left us on a cliff hanger!
on June 20th, 2008 at 1:42 pmI havent actually read the host yet, but i cant wait!! I’ll have to get it next time i go to the book store, which i dont do often cuz book store + me = dangerous. i spend way toooo much $$. Your review only makes more more excited to start the book!!
on June 20th, 2008 at 2:26 pmI didn’t like The Host nearly as much as the Twilight books, but I did like it. I agree with you that it was predictable, and I HATED the name Wanda, too! I’m not a Trekkie, so I didn’t notice the Star Trek connection – interesting.
on June 20th, 2008 at 4:05 pm“Science Fiction for those who don’t like Science Fiction.”
That’s funny because I do like science fiction. Oh well, I haven’t read The Host yet, but this is a great and thorough review. Hopefully, I’ll get to read it soon.
on June 20th, 2008 at 5:33 pmThis is definitely intriguing… and since I loved the Twilight series I’m looking forward to reading this. I know it will be different, though, and your review has given me an idea of what to expect – thank you!
on June 20th, 2008 at 6:16 pmI like your review even though I haven’t finished the book yet. Actually I just started to read it. I’ve never realy been a fan of star trek… so I can’t compare. I hope the book doesn’t drag out like you say…. I might end up putting it aside for awhile and I hate doing that.
on June 20th, 2008 at 7:56 pm~Audrina
i unlike some people think that the host happens to be one of stephenies best books, the host really hooked me in and had me way in-tune with the characters, I like your review, The cave scenario may have been a little bit too drawn out but I still loved it
I love this contest of yours by the way
on June 20th, 2008 at 11:43 pmI’ve read so many reviews about this book and the more reviews I read the more I want to read the book. I know that this book is going to be so diffrent from the twilight series and i’m really looking forward to reading it. which is why i want to win this contest to be able to read it.
on June 21st, 2008 at 3:18 pmWell, I’m going to write this in hopes that no huge Twilight fan reads it and harasses me till the end of existence. This is a time when 322 posts is to my advantage.
I have only read Twilight, so I’m not totally familiar with Stephenie’s writing style. However, I did study composition in college and felt a little let down when I first started reading Twilight. It is totally clear that Stephenie, though INSANELY popular, is still an amateur. Well, maybe not an amateur, but a beginner, for sure. (But, to her credit, she did an INCREDIBLE job creating tension in Twilight, which I think is what made it so popular. And, I’m in love with Edward. But besides that…)
While your review is great, it has confirmed my fears about “The Host” and I don’t know if I will read it. Maybe someday, in my pursuit of being a YPL librarian.
Thanks for your amazing blog!
on June 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pmI haven’t even finished Twilight yet, so I didn’t want to hear too much about the HOST yet…but I will probably read the whole series just to read it and then compare notes. Thanks for the review though…I don’t like books that drag on either.
on June 21st, 2008 at 10:50 pmi haven’t read all the twilight but i want to read host because it sounds good
on June 22nd, 2008 at 11:40 ami loved you twilight series so i will be sure to read the host!!!!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 11:42 amYour review greatly helped me in deciding whether or not if I should read The Host. I especially love the comparison of Star Trek, it gave me a general aspect of what I should be looking forward about the book. Taking your advice, I’ll read The Host and hope that I will not be disappointed.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 1:27 pmthe host is an excellent sci-fi read! Usually I am not very interested in sci-fi books but this book was one-of-a-kind!This book can keeping you reading till the middle of the night! I kept on reading my mom begged me to come eat dinner!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 2:49 pmDespite being more emotionally attached to the Twilight series than to any other books, I wasn’t really excited about this book, but after reading this I might just give it a shot!
I love how you ended the review…I always wonder what inspires authors or if they knew while writing a book about something strikingly similar
(btw I would like to be entered into the contest)
on June 22nd, 2008 at 4:30 pmreally nice review. i have yet to read the host so, i guess i will be dreading the caves!! : S
sometimes, i have to agree (sorry stephanie!!), that she DOES add much unnecessary descriptions, but because she ellaborates soo much, it gives you that nice “real life” visual image in your head. I aspire to be a writer, so i look up to stephanie, & the people who critupe her books, because it’s hard to give constructive critisim on wll renowned books!! good luck to you, & thank you for the review. i look forward to reading “the host,” along with breaking dawn!
urs truly!!
p.s. i would like for this to count as one of my entries for the contest!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 6:27 pmTime Magazine recently had an interesting article about Stephanie Meyer, and at one point they make some quip about how wordy she is. I assume she’s that way in the other books, though, too? I haven’t read any of her books, not for lack of desire, but the ol’ so many books, so little time.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 9:37 pmI agree about the description of the caves being too long. You did a great job on the review, but I got lost at the Star Trek part. And my friends and I do the same thing, connect odd things to Stephenie Meyer’s books.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 9:48 pmI also agree that the taglines were a little off, but I disagree with the “both Melanie and Wanda love Jared” thing. When I first heard this, I thought she would be in love with HIM, not inheriting Melanie’s love for him and falling in love wiht memories of him. While I was reading it, it seemed like she reluctantly liked him and wanted to be with Ian. But that just might be because I don’t like Jared.
Could you please enter me into the contest?
i want to win the contest!! I haven’t read The Host yet, but after i read your review it don’t sound half that bad. It’s just that it sounded like something off the scifi channel, i have to watch those shows all the time cause my grandpa, but i’ll think i read it.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 10:00 pmThanx for changing my opinions about it.
I loved the host SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much!!!!!!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 10:11 pmsome people have different opinions on the book
but it was still awsome!!!
I’ve only read Twilight so far, but I thought that was a little on the wordy side as well. I still think the The Host sounds like it’ll be enjoyable.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 7:00 amThe Star Trek connection is kind of funny.
That is a great review. I had not known that much about the book, I was interested in it simply because I had also heard this was her adult book. I really enjoyed knowing that it can be compared a bit to Star Trek and that there is a spot that might be more difficult to get through. I am happy to know that after that cave section is past that it turns out to be so good.
I am really looking forward to reading it. Thank you for taking the time to do such a thoughtful review.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 8:20 amHa ha! I hadn’t heard about the Star Trek connection from anyone else, but that really cracks me up. I’ve found that most of Meyer’s books seem to be on the overly-wordy side, but she’s still fun
on June 23rd, 2008 at 9:59 amInteresting review that has made me decide to read the book. I am NOT a Star Trek fan but I do believe that this could capture my interest!
on June 23rd, 2008 at 10:31 amThat’s a nice review…I’m just kidding. Here’s the thoughtful part of the comment:
on June 23rd, 2008 at 1:43 pmThat’s a really great review. I read The Host and loved it. I’m sorry but I don’t agree that it’s 150 pages too wordy, but still I liked your review.
I haven’t read this book, but after reading your review I have mixed feelings. However, I will still probably read it eventually — especially if I happen to win it! So with any luck….
on June 23rd, 2008 at 2:53 pmWow, this is a very detailed review. I didn’t intend on reading The Host, mainly because I don’t like science fiction but now that I’ve read someone elses perspective I think I might have to pick it up.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 3:10 pmwell i didn’t intend on reading the host either but one of the girls on the girls (that i do have a slight crush on ) was reading it and i told her to lend it to me suprisingly it was great from this i got into twilight and now i can’t get enough
on June 23rd, 2008 at 5:05 pmThank you. While reading the description I was trying to figure out where I’d seen a similar story line. Star Trek. Bingo!
I’d still read it though. It sounds right up my alley.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 6:48 pmI haven’t read the host yet, but all my friends are talking about it so I know the general plot, and I never connected it with that startrek episode (and I totally saw that episode). I think you might be right about some of the inspiration =)
on June 24th, 2008 at 3:57 amI’ve read The Host already and I think it’s really good. And I would think something would slip up about the Twilight series into The Host. But it didn’t. And I find it weird about the connection between The Host and Star Trek. And your review was awesome.
on June 24th, 2008 at 12:39 pmI’ve only recently found out about The Host, and didn’t know it was a part of a series. It does look interesting… even if a little slow. I remember watching that STNG episode.
on June 24th, 2008 at 9:47 pmI got a copy of The Host from the library on a one-week loan, and, like you, ended up putting the book down for a while once they got to the caves. I never picked it back up, except to return it.
Maybe I’ll try to re-read it again later. Heck, let me rephrase that: I will try to re-read it later. I’ll just have to force myself past the caves, I guess.
on June 24th, 2008 at 11:12 pmI really think there’s a place for newbie science fiction — by that I mean, books that kind of ARE sci-fi without being so far gone that people who haven’t read sci-fi much can’t (or won’t) touch them.
I’m starting to think I actually like science fiction (that may be tested this weekend), but for years I was so turned off by even the idea of it.
on June 25th, 2008 at 7:33 amI never really understood what The Host was about until reading this review. Now that I do know, I am actually interested in reading it, though I do really dislike science fiction. But if it’s really ok for the science fiction hater, I’ll look forward to reading it
. I love Stephenie’s Twilight series, but there are some noticeable weaknesses in her writing and plot, so I guess it is to be expected. Loved the honest review
on June 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pmI’ve heard so many mixed reviews of this book. But none of them can say WHY they liked or disliked it. I’m still thinking I’ll give it a shot. I love all her twilight books
on June 25th, 2008 at 4:56 pmI loved the Host. Although, I must say, I was fed up with Jared half the time. I didn’t how Wanderer aka. Wanda could be so in love with him when he treated her so bad. Even, in the end. Uhh, I love Stephenie Meyer, but he make me so mad! I get why he was like that, but still. Really good review, I must say. It’s interesting about the Star Trek stuff. I never knew about that. Now I want to check it out. Ha.

on June 25th, 2008 at 5:42 pmk, first, i’m sorry, i can’t read your review yet
on June 25th, 2008 at 9:26 pmcuz i haven’t been able to read The Host yet
i hope to soon!
but whenever i do read it, i will read your review
and second, The Host’s description didn’t seem like anything i would read,
but then all of stephenie’s fans were talking about how good it was,
so i decided to read it as soon as i get a copy of it in my hands
but i think maybe she has a thing for mythical creatures
vampires, werewolves, aliens, oh my
i have not read the host yet. i was actually a bit worried about reading it. But after reading your review i might just have to try reading. whats the worst that can happen. like you said you either like it or you don’t.
on June 26th, 2008 at 10:34 amI haven’t read The Host.
I’m not much of a sci-fi person.
But I’ll give it a shot.
The trailer seems a little,
on June 26th, 2008 at 10:39 am80s.
lol.
Great review! I was thinking of buying the Host, seeing as everyone says it’s quite an amazing book, and your post helped me confirm that I am buying it. Mainly because I want to read the cave part for myself and see if it is in fact too wordy. Thanks for the heads up, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it!
on June 27th, 2008 at 7:23 amThanks for sharing your thoughts on this book. I haven’t had the pleasure of reading anything by Meyer yet, but I thought this adult release sounded really intriguing. Based on your review I’d say that I’ll definitely have to give it a try, even if it is a bit too long in parts.
Thanks for including me in your Stephanie Meyer giveaway draw. “)
on June 27th, 2008 at 12:32 pmI never had a problem with anything in the book being to wordy or long. I thought the whole thing was fantastic! I was also kinda worried that I wouldnt be near as good as Twilight but I read it and I did love it! Although Twilight Series is still my all time favorite Host is my second favorite. lol.
on June 27th, 2008 at 10:58 pmI’ve been wanting to read The Host since it came out. I like love stories, but I’m not sure if the body invasions mentioned are really my thing. I’ll give it a try anyway, thanks for the heads-up!
on June 28th, 2008 at 9:08 amI’m new to the Sci-Fi world also but I picked it up because Steph said, “it’s Science Fiction for those who don’t like Science Fiction.”
I had a hard time getting through to some spots as well but later, Ian kept me intrigued.
Thanks for the review and the awesome Stephenie Meyer giveaway!
on June 28th, 2008 at 6:45 pmIf I read this book, it would be my 2nd “big book” right next to my first, Twilight. I’m now more hat willing to read it now thanks to your review.
I just know I’m gonna put down the book at the caves part. I can just feel it! But I’ll read it!
Isn’t Stephanie Meyer wonderful?
THANKS AGAIN!
on June 28th, 2008 at 9:52 pmI thought Twilight was good, but for me I think I actually liked the Host better. I think it jus felt a little more grown up or something.
I could care less if she got the idea from Star Trek, because really the thing that I like about Stephanie Meyer’s books isn’t necessarily originality or perfect writing, but the fact that the books hold your attention and keep you wanting to read!
Thanks for your review. Made me rethink the story again. Thanks for the giveaway!
on June 28th, 2008 at 10:33 pmI agree with “Brooke” about The Twilight Series being really great, but The Host EVEN better.
I’ve always been one of those people who don’t like SciFi much, but The Host COMPLETELY changed my opinion on them.
It’s very interesting that she got the idea from Star Trek, but i don’t think it’s wrong or anything. Everybody needs to get inspiration somewhere!
Thinking about it makes my heart race! =D It was beautiful, different, frightening, amazing, heart wrenching.
on June 29th, 2008 at 5:01 amI thought The Host was too wordy also. At first it really just did not capture my interest. I found that after Jared decided to be more accepting of ‘Wanda’, i could really get into the book.
on June 29th, 2008 at 11:31 amI like Stephenie Meyer’s other books better, but The Host was not bad.
I haven’t had a chance to read the Host just yet not only because I am on a very tight budget, but because I am still on hold at my library for it. But you put alot of thought in your review and it has actually prepared me for the book. I am looking even more forward to reading it once I can get my hands on it now that I know more of what its about and what to expect from it.
on June 29th, 2008 at 12:24 pmwow! I’ve heard about the host.. but didn’t realize that stephanie Meyer wrote it too.. (geeze.. I’m so stupid sometimes)
but honestly, it sounds really intriguing. I’m not totally into scifi either so it’s a good thing you warned me or I might never have picked up the book. As well.. it’s good to know that the story lags a bit around the caves, so I can prepare myself to keep reading.
your review is excellently written and it really has helped me find a new book I might be interested in.
on June 29th, 2008 at 3:58 pmThis is the first review of The Host and I find myself wanting to read the book. I enjoy sifi so thanks for the review.I am looking foward to reading the book.
on June 29th, 2008 at 8:55 pmI enjoyed what I read of your review…however I didn;t read it all because I’m waiting to borrow it from a friend and didn’t want any spoilers.
on June 29th, 2008 at 9:15 pmI just looked at this at Barnes and Noble! It does sound like a good story… glad it’s not all about sci fi.
I’ll be sure to pick it up on my next stop there!
I also like how it sounds like it brings up interesting questions and seems to be a book that has more levels than initially thought. can’t wait to start reading!
on June 29th, 2008 at 9:25 pmMy daughter loved Stephanie Meyers Twilight series, but never has been a sci-fi fan. she has been so anxious to beging reading The Host, I hope she’s not disappointed.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:49 amI think what kept me going was what i saw as a commentary on humanity….what it means to be human….maybe i’m thinking too deep, but its what kept me going in the caves….
on June 30th, 2008 at 11:32 amI have not actually gotten to read the Host yet. but i will now. you wrote a really good review. and i will now try to find the book so i can make an oppinion of my own on it.
on June 30th, 2008 at 1:25 pmI have to admit that I haven’t read The Host yet. After all that I have heard from people, I want to read it. I was hesitant about reading soemthing without vampires but I think I can manage something new. Im very picky about the books that I read. Thank you for both The Host and the Twilight series.
on June 30th, 2008 at 2:19 pmI have to admit that I haven’t read The Host yet. After all that I have heard from people, I want to read it. I was hesitant about reading soemthing without vampires but I think I can manage something new. Im very picky about the books that I read. Thank you for both The Host and the Twilight series. I also think the review kind of made up my mind
on June 30th, 2008 at 2:20 pmThe Host was amazing. When I first heard about it, I was kind of skeptical. My friend bought it and said she loved it. A few days later a went out and bought it. I read the whole thing in two and a half days. I couldn’t put it down. I agree with you on one part though. It was a little lenghty but still very good. It is deinitely a book I would read multiple times.
on June 30th, 2008 at 2:33 pmI agree with many of the things you said in your review. Yes, The Host was a little to lengthy and wordy at times. I agree the scene involving the Caves could have been much shorter. I was skeptical about reading the Host when it first came out as well, reading Science Fiction is not my cup of tea. After helpful reviews like yours, I finally picked up the novel and loved it.
Your comments about Star Trek were quite interesting. I’m much too young to remember it, but now I’m intrigued enough to want to see the episode.
on June 30th, 2008 at 3:37 pmI heard about The Host on http://www.stepheniemeyer.com on my daily visits. At first I though it be a good book for me to keep me busy until the release of Breaking Dawn. I thought, thought being the keyword, I could read it throughout the summer and not finish it in a day or two, but I was taken by surprise when I couldn’t stop reading it. It took me only two days to complete it.
on June 30th, 2008 at 3:41 pmI didn’t find the book too wordy in fact that is one of the reasons i love stephenie meyer’s writing it goes into detail about the characters thoughts and emotions. when it came to caves i got even more interested i was already suspecting that jared was alive but i wasnt sure and then when he came out i was like oh thank heavens. I really found that part interesting. & as for the star trek i never got interested in those shows but im pretty sure if stephenie meyer were to direct this movie it be a hit and much more interesting. But i do see the resemblance between star trek and the host, but the host is much more grab-you-by-the-horns than star trek!
Great Review!!!!!!
Thanks for the review. I’ve been wanting to read this book for awhile now and have requested it from the library. It helps to hear what others have to say about it.
on June 30th, 2008 at 3:55 pmWow. That is extremely wierd. I mean the star Trek referance, not the review
Personally, I adored The Host and read it in one day. After forcing (in a good way) all my friends to read it (they loved it!) I then proceeded to my mother…a much more daunting task. But with my skillfull motivation and cunning determination, I think she’ll finish it…eventually. Your review of The Host is much longer than any other I have read, and I appreciate it, because I am really craving some in depth The Host analysation conversation. So this most definatly satisfied my needs. Although you and everyone else mentioned how you were bored during a large chunk of it, I wasn’t. I suppose it was my body responding to more Stephenie Meyer besides the Twilight saga (of which the first I have read 15 times…no joke!) congratulations for getting through it…wish my mom was such determined!
on June 30th, 2008 at 3:55 pmI definitely agree with you about Stephenie Meyer accomplishing her attempt at an adult novel, but I wasn’t bothered by any plot-lag. I couldn’t put it down, even during the cave parts. I work at a bookstore and I often quote the tagline of this book to buyers who are unsure about their purchases, because it is very, very true for The Host. I’m not a Sci-Fi fanatic myself, but I really did enjoy The Host. Also, I’d never made that connection between the Star Trek episode and her plot–Wow! It doesn’t bother me either, to be honest, but I could see why your Mother would be irked by it.
Also, please enter me in the contest.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:04 pmok so before now i never got into the whole sci-fi thing. but this book puts it in such a different way that i couldnt help but love it.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:05 pmThat is really interesting. I’ve heard mixed reviews, some love it some hate it. I enjoyed your description and criticism and it makes me want to go out and read the book.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:05 pmI started reading The Host but can’t seem to finish it. I guess I’m more into Twilight. I know someone who finished it and was a little emotional at the end so I’m guessing it’s really worth reading. Plus, there’s a love story, I’m a sucker for those.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:57 pmI think you’re right about it being too long. I honestly haven’t finished the book yet. There are just waaaay too many extra scenes that could have been and have had the same result. Okay so far, no TwiMoonClipse though.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:01 pmthat’s kind of a fascinating review. it reminds me of a series I used to read, called Animorphs. in there, there were Yeerks (slugs who could take over the brains of any creature) who landed on earth and started trying to take over and a group of kids who fought them.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:35 pmbut one question: do you mean that Wanda fell in love with Jared and actually went through with her feelings? did she tell Jared about all of it?…..yeah, yeah, I get the point, I’ll read the book.
this book was AMAZING! it took me like the first hundred pages or so to actually get in the book but once i was hooked and i couldnt stop reading it! it took me two days in a half to finish it! unfortunatly it is soooo not better than the TWILIGHT SERIES!
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:39 pmI totally understand what you were saying about there being unnecessary description in The Host. I feel that way about a lot of books, however not with this one. But I agree that there were some things that weren’t needed. The whole Star Trek thing is interesting. I’m not a big fan of Star Trek or anything so that doesn’t bother me in anyway, but I can see how that might affect the opinions on the book of those who are familiar with Star Trek. I really enjoyed everything you had to say about The Host.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:51 pmThis book was very interesting to read, especially since it’s one of Stephenie Meyer’s first books that slice off of the “Twilight” series.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:59 pmThis review covered just about anything, and I’m quite sure that Miss Stephenie herself would have been quite satisifed with this eloquently written review.
The whole “star trek” thing was funny too! Except then you realize, “OH, wait, she has a point…” and I love the video you added in between as well.
All in all, this was a woderfully written, down to earth, no fluff-in-the-middle review. Fabulous.
I loved your review. Your thoughts on the book are very similar to mine, though I didn’t see the ending coming a mile away.(haha) The caves did bore me for a while but I kept reading because I know how good a writer Stephenie Meyer is and knew she would some how but her own spin on things and she did. A lot of my friends do not want to read the book because there is no dazzling Edward or clumsy Bella but now that I have read your review I’m going to show them and I’m sure this will change their minds. =]
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:07 pmNice review. I agree with you! I didn’t really realize what it was that threw me about the caves bit until you said it-and you’re right, it was a little bit too wordy. But it didn’t bother me. I love The Host
And that’s really interesting about the Star Trek eposide being so similar! How funny
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:09 pmOh, and I forgot to mention-one reason why I like The Host so much is because of how different the descriptions of “aliens” are from today’s ‘little green men’. They look very different, have different senses, a different range of emotions, different social habits, and different ways of communicating.
I thought that was pretty cool. I’m kind of a sci-fi geek
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:15 pmI was indeed wondering if I’d want toread a book without Edward and Bella..I think I’ll still check it out, but I’m a little wary as to the ending. I hate knowing what’s going to happen before it does!
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:17 pmI haven’t read the book yet, but from what I hear, everyone raves about it. I was hesitant because I’ve been hearing TOO MANY good things (as in too good to be true, you know?). It’s nice to read an objective review that points out both the good and the bad points of the book. More kudos to you.
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:20 pmI love how the Host makes a person expand their minds and think about events they have never thought of ever happening before. The whole plot is so impossible but after reading the book, I half expected to turn around and see someone with silver eyes.
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:57 pmI was able to read The Host 1 month before it came out and I seriously regretted it because it was the HARDEST THING to not reuin it for EVERYONE!!! It was SUCH an awesome boook! I had to seriously bite my lip for like a month so as no to kill it for all of my family and friends! It would have been even MORE awful because I was the one who got EVERYONE HOOKED on Twilight and Stephanie Meyer! YEAH! But… I was able to do it and now it is safe to say that this book made me laugh, cry and shout at it till I was on the verge of INSANITY like every Stephanie Meyer book should:) Very excellent review and I give Stephanie 1,000,000,000,000 high 5’s for making me love the characters in her head as much as she does! THANKS STEPH!!!
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:05 pmI’m in the middle of The Host, and i’m really enjoying it. However, i do think it’s a tad bit lengthy, but i do love her attention to little details most writers don’t include. It’s a really interesting story so far and i can’t wait to finish it! Stephenie Meyer is an amazing writer and I love every one of her books!
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:13 pmPhenomenal. No other way to put it.
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:36 pmI agree completely about Wanda…I felt Wanderer fit her so much better. This was definately a little too large to read in a day…it took me three days and had some slower parts. Even so, its still one of my favorite books.
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:56 pmI’ve heard about the book, and Im looking foward to buy it, as soon as I will be done reading the Twilight collection!
on June 30th, 2008 at 8:01 pmIt was truly a good review. I commend you. I think that it was an excellent choice to pick back up The Host. I couldn’t put it down. Though, in all of the excitement leading up, I was nervous to pick it up, afraid that it would not meet my expectations. Though, it certainly did. Your take has given a completely different insight on some things.
Make sure to include me in the giveaway!
Thanks!
on June 30th, 2008 at 8:19 pmnice review!!!! Just kidding. It wasn’t nearly as addictive as the twilight series. Like you, I found myself becoming a bit bored. It just seemed…monotonous. But the last 200 pages or so, I ate through the book like it was a pie and i was in a pie eating contest! Initially, though I liked Wanderer, I was sincerely hoping she would end up dead. I’m usually incredible at predicting endings, but I didn’t see this one coming. Probably because I was rooting too hard for Wanderer to bite the bullet and somehow leave Melanie alive. but then, when she was going to sacrifice herself, I felt bad, and suddenly, I wanted her to live somehow. Yay!! Happy endings!!!! Don’t get me wrong, I love ginormous books as much as i love marshmallow fluff, but this book seemed too big for its story line. The middle, though, not boring, was just devoid of action and substance. I probably would have liked it more if it wasn’t by stephenie meyer, only because twilight gave me such high expectations of her and the host didn’t quite meet them.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:01 pmThanks so much for telling me more about the Host. I am hesitant in actually reading the book since its Science Fiction. Like yourself I don’t read much of the genre. But I’ve heard from a lot of people that they enjoyed the book no the less.
I also tend to put off reading books when comimg to a boring/wordy section. Glad I’m not the only one.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:04 pmI agree that it was a bit wordy, but I think she did an awesome job with the characters. It makes you feel like you’ve known them forever.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:07 pmI like the idea of a soft science fiction like this. I can’t get into regular science fiction–too technical and science-like but I think this sounds really great.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:19 pmI agree that the beginning of the novel was slow and by the end of the 13th chapter, but I told myself that I wanted Stephenie a chance to recover, and from there I just couldn’t put the novel down. I also believe that those first couple of chapters, while slow, were also vital to the storyline. Some things could have been skipped, but the added to the story later in the novel.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:27 pmPlus the longer the story ran, the more I got to know the characters. It felt like I was there with them in the cave. Stephenie Meyer did an awesome job as always building and describing her stories so that we readers can live vicariously through the characters.
Wow, I haven’t actually read this one yet. I’m not into science fiction either, but this is apparently the book for me! I’ll just glance over the cave parts and move on, as soon as I read the book that is. I tend to just drop books for a few days too when they reach sad/boring parts, but you made me want to read this one. Oh, and please enter me in the giveaway! Thank you.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:28 pmI really have to disagree with you. I don’t think it’s long. I like detailing. It’s Like With Edward and Bella. I don’t want minimum’s. I want ALL of it. If she talks about Sitting in a cafeteria for four pages however, that’s different. I don’t really know about the Caves… didn’t catch all of my attention. But, i Still kept up with it. I value your opinion. But I still disagree. I do wonder if she will make it a series like Twilight. And, the Star trek thing. I never watched it. But if that’s a video from the movie’s. It also makes me wonder. It is similar. She might have watched it one day, and it just gave her an Idea. Ya know?
on June 30th, 2008 at 10:07 pmumm i heard of the host never read it except for the twilight series. i guess science fiction isnt ur thing either lol we have something in common. good thing u told me b4 hand that there is 150 pages of unesscary stuff i hate that. thanks for writing this i hav a little more info now about the book “The Host”
p.s. enter me 4 the contest
on June 30th, 2008 at 10:29 pmI am reading the Host now. It took me a little time to get interested in it. It was a little hard at first. But I am really enjoying it now. I usually am not a sci-fi type of chic but I have really gotten in to it and I really love Stephenie Meyers work.
on June 30th, 2008 at 11:09 pmThanks for the review. I loved “The Host” and wasn’t able to put it down for long. However, I do like to “dabble” in science fiction, so that may be the difference. It was interesting to recall the Star Trek episode. I was a “Trekkie” as a child.

on July 1st, 2008 at 10:46 amHi,
on July 1st, 2008 at 1:45 pmI LOVE Stephenie Meyer, I read the Eclipse, then I realize there is more then that book. I went and read the trilogy, and most recently I read Host. I love all of them and cannot wait for the last book in the twilight saga.
Please enter me in the sweepstakes. Thanks
Maggie
i love the host i read it before i read the twilight seires i loved it and im also hearing that they might make a movie out of it too i hope soo i cant wait to see if they do and i also cant wait to see the twilight the movie and i hope i win all the books
love lia
on July 3rd, 2008 at 3:13 pmi absolutely LOVED this book!! i think it was equally as amazing as the twilight series if not better! i think she did a great job of describing the scenery and the impact of the situation!! i thought it was perfect!!!!!
on July 5th, 2008 at 9:38 pmI just finished reading “The Host”, and although I have not read any other books by Stephanie Meyer (a problem I am solving by going out and gettng the other books today), I found this story to be riveting and exceptionally easy to get into. I would highly reccomend it to anyone-as for a movie, after the first 5-6 chapters I told my husband I thought this would make an awesome movie-if done correctly!
on July 8th, 2008 at 9:33 amI, like many others, wasn’t planning on reading The Host, though I loved the Twilight series, simply because the whole concept didn’t interest me. However, I picked it up in the airport, and read the entire thing on a 4 hour flight. I agree it had slow spots, but it kept me entertained, and I think it was definitely as good/better than the Twilight series! I found the emotions of the story incredibly captivating. I laughed and cried throughout the story. I’m hoping for a sequel to it!
on July 13th, 2008 at 12:54 amwhen i read the twilight saga, i found out about host. i didn’t think it would be as interesting as twilight but when i read it i was COMPLETELY wrong! it was one of the most interesting books i have ever read. i hope there are more like it.
on July 14th, 2008 at 3:44 pmI agree that it’s obvious Stephenie is an ameture, but inspite she does an excellent job, and in the host, I felt she was a more seasoned writer. I have to say, at first I almost gave up on the host. I was confused the first two chapters. But I really enjoyed the Twilight series and didn’t want to give up, so I started over, and somehow, around chapter 4 it started to click. I was so glad when I started to understand the story line, and who everyone was. I enjoyed the book very much. I didnt think it was to wordy, loved the descriptions, and the end was exciting, what was with the two blank pages at the end though?I thought it was over, and was relieved when I realized it wasn’t.
on July 17th, 2008 at 7:57 pm[...] THE HOST, by Stephenie Meyer. Aliens have taken control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but one woman won’t surrender. [...]
on August 17th, 2008 at 12:01 ami think this review will was great plus i think most of ur books are great so even if people think its bad u can’t juge a book by its cover so as long as the books good which i know it will be then ur set.
on August 22nd, 2008 at 8:09 pmYes, I just finished this book, and yes, I saw the Star Trek parallel! LOL It was one of my favorite episodes of the show.
Anywho, I will be posting my review today. I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for reviewing this book. I liked The Host a lot more than I thought I would after the Breaking Dawn debacle…ok the disappointment.
on August 25th, 2008 at 12:12 pmokay so this book is my favorite book ever, it’s the greates story. You may not see it as i do but it IS a love story and truly shows what it means to be human more than it does show the sci-fi part so people who don’t like sci-fi this truly is the book for people to start liking it. I am in absolutely love with this book. I read it starting at 8pm and as soon as i turned the last page i looked up to see it was 5:30am!!!!
on September 14th, 2008 at 7:37 pmIt was that good!!!!
I totally loved the host.
on September 20th, 2008 at 11:54 pmI loved all the characters and hope that you decide to write another one to continue. it was the coolest alien book that i have ever read. I really liked Ian, even though Jared sounds better looking, I really think he is a gentle man. do you think it would become a movie? i mean i really love that Twilight is becoming a movie, but the host would be the best alien movie to go and see, but make sure you have a really cute guy playing Ian, and Jared. I loved all the twilight books and hope that I win the competition becasue I really don’t think my friend will let me borrow her books anymore, I have read tham dozens of times. I cant wait till the movie comes out, it will be so much fun to watch the cullens on screen instead of picturing them all in my head, even though I like doing that because you can day dream about Edward all day long!!!
I loved your bok host and hope there will be another book on wanda in her new body. I have not as of this moment read any of the twilight series but i will if not for any thing else just to see the differance styles of writing you used. thank you for a good book it one kids can read. Keep up the great writing i will be waiting for more to come out.I use to get into all the V.C. Andrew book and wish she had not died she was a real good writing and it seem like i will be adding you to my collection.I borrowed the host from the libary and went right out and bought it when i was done reading it.It now has a home with all my V.C.Andrews book good luck.
on October 14th, 2008 at 6:12 pmI enjoyed the book, i never really found it too wordy or too descriptive at any points. i thought the relations between the characters and the psychological struggles were done very well. [spolier] ultimately, i found that the ending was a little bit poor for me. i thought that the right ending happened 20 pages before the real ending to the book. I thought that the book should have ended on the operating table, when she faded off after saying goodbye to everybody. I was very touched by that ending, it demonstrated the selflessness and sacrifice of Wanda and how much she cared for those around her and inside of her. The additional two chapters where she gets a new body and whatnot seemed a little too much for me and hurt the overall mood for the end of the book. I thought that ending was a little bit too predictable and it didn’t have the same feeling that the one i wished for did. [end spoiler] Ultimately, i found the book to be pretty good and i would recommend it, i just thought that the ending made it a pretty good book and not a great book.
on December 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pmthe host and the tiwlight light books rock. i think that the host is the best book that she made so far! i just really love the action in it and the way you can feel as if what happens in the story came true. meyer is one of the best authors of this century!
