Cover for Stephenie Meyer’s Breaking Dawn Revealed
It’s released! The book cover for Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. What do you think? Who’s the pawn? Who’s the king? Or is it queen? I think it’s okay. It’s certainly bold. Click here to read my post about what Stephenie thought of all of the other book covers.
I understood (as I said in my last Stephenie Meyer post) that they would be putting up the entire first chapter of Breaking Dawn on Stephenie Meyer’s website today. But this is their statement: Many people are still having a difficult time understanding the concept of Eclipse Special Edition. It is Eclipse, but includes the cover art and first chapter of Breaking Dawn. We will be posting the cover art on Monday, June 2nd, but will not be allowed to post the first chapter on our site until within a few days of the release on August 2, 2008. So it looks like it won’t be available online in it’s entirety. If they post it, I’ll update this post with a link. In the meantime, it looks like I just might have to sneak on over to the bookstore and read it in print.
Pre-order Breaking Dawn through Amazon and the Eclipse Special Edition through Amazon.
Will you just wait until August or do you want to read the first chapter now? Do you like the cover? Do you hate it?
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

I like that cover – though am interested to know what it means.
I think I’ll wait for the book rather than read the first chapter
on May 31st, 2008 at 12:14 amI think reading the first chapter somewhere would drive me crazy, because August will not get here any sooner! I still can’t make my mind up about that cover. I’m intrigued though.
on May 31st, 2008 at 12:45 amI still need to read Eclipse but i’m excited to read the first chapter of Breaking Dawn! I’m not sure about this cover, I kinda liked the naturey/natural feel of the other covers. I’m sure by August it will have grown on me!
on May 31st, 2008 at 3:32 amI am so going to stop by the bookstore and read the first chapter – why not, right? Anyway, the book cover is ok, but nothing special – kind of like the rest of the Twilight series covers.
on June 1st, 2008 at 11:13 amThe cover is pretty stiff isn’t it? But it is big and bold like the others. I’m tempted to also read the first chapter but I’m not sure either. Somebody told me that it was pretty wordy.
on June 4th, 2008 at 12:13 amI really like the cover – the contrasting colors are appealing to the eye, and if I saw it in a bookstore I’d definitely pick it up!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:05 amI couldn’t wait, I rushed to the bookstore to read the first chapter a few days after it came out.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:19 amAs for the cover, I think it’s definitely the most -surprising- one. Chess is not at all what I would have expected! That being said, I love the look and can’t wait to find out what it means (old Bella becoming Bella the vampire, perhaps?).
I have a feeling there is a lot of symbolism with the chess pieces and where they’re positioned but i don’t know yet?
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:19 amI think the Queen is Bella of course
but is the pawn Jacob or Edward?
I think its Edward waiting for his queen :]
I like the Stephenie Meyer covers. They may be categorized as teen fiction or young adult, but they don’t give off that look when you see them.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:31 amI think the cover is amazing! I think it means that the plot in Breaking Dawn will be very complex. Like a game of chess, there will have to be lots of characters (chess pieces) working together and against each other. Maybe this means that there will even be ‘pawns’ – people will have to die. I think that Bella is ‘the queen’ and the pawn behind her will be Jacob. In the end I think he will die to save her, somehow. I hope this doesn’t happen, but it seems likely.
I can’t wait!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:36 amI’m not so sure I like the cover. I guess I still expected there to be more red but maybe this showes a change like we are hoping for in the book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:36 amIm like everyone else…I am curious to know what the cover means? I like it..its different from the rest.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:38 amI love the cover and can’t wait to read the book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:44 amoh my goodness, entry number 3 and I’m thinking my next step will be to go to the library and get one of her books!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:48 amThis cover through me for a loop when I first saw it. After a while of thinking in endless circles, I came to a conclusion. The Queen (that’s what I think it is) it the New Bella. Stronger, better, “pure” (appearance wise). She’s about to take over the old Bella, the red pawn, unless the pawn makes a different move.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:51 amSo I think it means unless Bella makes a change, then she will be a vampire with Edward, but if she moves and deviates from the path, then she might end up with Jacob still.
I love love love that cover. I’m trying not to think too hard about it because I’ll drive myself nuts until August. I really like the fact that the pawn is red… that’s significant, somehow, I think. I can’t help but think that Edward is the king (IF it’s a king), but I don’t know. Could be Bella, since she hopefully gets changed in this book.
I went to Barnes and Noble the day the special edition came out and devoured that cover and the first chapter. (And the prologue! Ahhhhhh.) I didn’t buy the special edition (I hate the little white circle) but I definitely looked it over.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:56 amI have never understood this cover. It looks interesting, but it also feels very different from the other covers. I’m just hoping they reveal what it means within the books. I also read the first chapter while in the store and that was certainly revealing, but still didn’t explain the cover…
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:58 amWell the front chess piece is a queen (or seems to look more like a queen than a king) and I think that the fact that its white and at the front means that she will be changed and now she is stronger and she is able to take care of things. The pawn being red is her in her mortal form not a vampire and she has less power in that form to take on the other chess pieces but she has the power to change and move all over the board in any direction she wants. If that chess piece in the fornt was supposed to be a king it could be like edward protecting her from the other pieces? Just a thought
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:58 amThis cover is interesting to me because it doesn’t seem as abstract as the other covers. It’s more bold and a bit more “masculine” (does that make sense?). To me, it really seems like a “one of these things is not like the other” book cover. It just doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the series. I do, however, think it’s intriguing. I know you’re big on book covers Natasha. Would this one grab you and draw you in if you saw it at a book store? I think it would for me.
As for reading the first chapter of Breaking Dawn, I’m going to wait. I’ve already pre-ordered from Amazon!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:00 amI am absolutely in love with the cover although it did take me a while to feel that way. It seems a little more… busy… than the other book covers. They just seem simpler somehow? I dont know :-p But it is very cool and the first chapter was amazing, as expected
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:02 amI liked the cover. But I’m a little confused. I’m hoping she ends up with Edward, but I’m not so sure anymore.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:08 amI really like the cover for Breaking Dawn. But the cover confused me a little. I know the means of Twilight and Eclipse, but i dont know the meaning of this one.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:24 amI love this cover! It has a very different feel to it than any of the previous covers. The thing that stands out to me the most is the fact that there is more white than red on this cover. On the three previous covers the main colors were red and black. I hope that it signifies loss of humanity aka blood. I am so excited to read BD! I can’t wait!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:24 amThe book cover is definitely an intereting one where I wonder what the meaning is behind it. Hopefully, the book cover gives a little insight of what Breaking Dawn. I can’t wait to read Breaking Dawn to find out whether Bella turns into a vampire and actually marries Edward.I really hope so!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:29 amI love the cover. I’m really excited to find out what it means. I hope the white queen means Bella becomes a vampire! But I still have no idea what the red pawn could mean…
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:30 amI snuck over to B&N to read it too, and I wasn’t the only one there doing it either…I’m so excited for it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:38 amI snuck into B&N to read it, and I wasn’t the only one
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:39 amI agree with some other people. The large Queen (it is a queen) is Bella in her new (white, cold form). The small pawn in the background is her overcoming her temptation of being a “newborn”. It’s on a chessboard because like Jacob said, it is war. This book is going to be amazing. I’m so excited!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:39 amI read the first chapter already and I can’t wait till August! Less than like 2 monthss =] The cover is good to even though it’s different than the others.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:40 amI personally think that the cover is way to busy. My eyes keep wandering all over the place. Maybe thats what they want? idk. When I saw the cover at the bookstore, I just stared at it. I bet people thought i was incoherent or something. lol
I dont know anything about chess. But i think that the white one is the queen. Maybe the chessboard represents her life and in order for her to become the queen(the vampire) that she has to cross many obstacles.
I am going to laugh hysterical when it is revealed that the cover means nothing and doesnt represent BD at all. Like the new moon cover.
After reading the first chapter, I was shocked about charlies and renees reactions to the wedding. and the fact that the wedding is almost here. wow!
but while reading through it, i became aware that Bella really and truly misses jake. I will be the fist to say that he annoys me . but she really does miss him.
I have this gut feeling that shes not going to go through with becoming a vampire. and thats shes gonna leave edward. I know, i know to the people reading this, she made her decision in Eclipse, but i dont think she totally made her decision there. I mean look at the reluctance she had to say yes to edward. idk, but something majors gonna happen..
and i cant wait 46 days to find out
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:40 amI love the cover it isn’t as easy to figure out as the other ones this one would also grab your eye if you were in a bookstore!!!!
I know the Queen is Bella, but the red pawn is hard to figure out!!!! I guess we’ll have to read it and find out
LOVE THE COVER!!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:41 amI like the overall cover, but it seems different from the others in the sense that its a full picture instead of one object.
At the Houston Signing for ‘The Host’, Stephenie mentioned that she did help with the cover, so I know that it has more meaning than the New Moon cover does.
I personally can see Bella as the Queen, the piece of value, of power, & Edward as the Pawn, the piece that the Queen decides its fate.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:44 amThe book cover looks pretty cool. It keeps me thinking about what it means or represents. The first things that I thought of when I saw the cover was, ‘Who or what is supposed to be the pawn and queen?’ and ‘Why a chess board? Does it mean there will be a war?’ I can’t wait until Breaking Dawn comes out so I can finally get the full answers to my questions. All I have now are theories that I probably way left field. lol
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:48 amI like the cover although i am not sure what it means…
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:49 ami have a theory…
i think the queen is bella as a vampire because it is white-ice-eclipse-like edward. Then the pawn is how Bella would have been if she stayed with Jacob because it is red-fire-sun-like Jacob.
Anyway it is just a theory and i am not compoletely sure of it…
Enter me in the contest to win!!!
The cover is pretty cool. Yes, it is a queen. I liked it, and even have my own theory on it, its basically this, the red pawn is Bella as human, it’s fading because her human qualities are fading, like the blood, sweat, human stuff. And the white queen is like purity, because once she is a vampire, she has lost the human qualities listed above. But she still has per personailty or so. Bella emerges as a vampire and is new, also maybe saying something about her power.
My friend had a theory where “the white peice represents all Bella wants to become but the red peice is always there and maybe theres some sort of backing out or something? i mean why have her old self in the background – why not get rid of it?
or is there a new enemy preventing her becoming all that she wants as everyone cowers before the queen?”

I also read the first chapter illegally (shhhhh!) but it was because I was curious as to what is said and someone had posted it as a pdf and it was on a forum, don’t worry, I’m pretty sure they were taken down, but it is pretty cool, Bella and her new car lol.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:51 amHonestly, the first time I saw the cover I was a little suprised. I did not hate it, but it made me very curious. Stephanie Meyer is so talented that readers even want to analyze the cover. I love how the K in Breaking Dawn looks like it has a fang coming out of it. The entire cover as a whole is very symbolic of what the book holds for us. The red and black chess pieces look very intense and interesting. I love the cover as a whole and can not wait for Breaking Dawn to come out.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:52 amThis cover is like the others, and it isn’t like the others. I think it makes a huge statement. The queen is Bella, but who’s the pawn? I can’t wait to find out!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:53 ami want to know what it means soo badly! i’ve heard so many explinations of what they think it is (but its to confusing for me to tell you again!) i just cant wait!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:55 amI don’t know what it means, but it’s very different from her other 3 Twilight covers. I definitely think Bella is the pawn, but the king could be a number of people, though I’m thinking the Volturi since they are the highest power in the vampire world.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:59 amI love the Cover- I wonder if it’s just something the publisher came up with, or if it actually means something, I don’t know.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:00 amThe Breaking Dawn cover is confusing to me, but if I had to guess, it would probably be about Bella making some decision. It’s your move!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:04 amThe mystery of what the cover represents only adds to the suspense of what is going to happen in Breaking Dawn. I cannot wait to get this book!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:05 amI can’t help it- I read the chapter…xD Twilight is so addicting.
I LOVE the cover its not what I realy expected but it is intresting, but the real thing I love about it is the meaning ( but then again it depends on how you translate it) I translate it like this: The chess board represents the game of life ( so does any board), the color white represents a new begining- while the color red means anger/passion…its very intresting..lol xD
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:06 amI don’t like the cover. The first three books were very subtle and this one is too flashy.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:08 amI was absoulty surprised when I saw the book cover. I Couldn’t belive it. It seemed so unlike all the other books. When I thought about it i really decided that it was a great cover with I can guess a Hidden meaning. It was a lot different than the red glass shattered thing I was expecting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:09 am-I think the white queen could simbolize Bella after the change compared to her former self the pawn.
- Also the pawn is red which could symbolize the bloodlust that she will feel but in comparision to her love, her talent, and just her. (the white queen) The lust means nothing.
-Or it could just be a really nice cover.
Please add me to the contest.
It’s really nice, but unexpected. Who would’ve thought they’d use a chess board. It also looks slightly weird set next to the other books because the white is so dominant in this one.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:16 amIt’s a very mysterious cover…I believe that the queen symbolizes Edward and the pawn could be Bella or even Jacob. And perhaps because the pawn is just out of range from the queen, it will mean that the pawn will be spared, either Jacob or Bella. Anyways, that’s what I think about it. What do you think? I can’t wait for Breaking Dawn! It’s torture!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:16 amI love the cover! The complexity of this one doesn’t quite fit wi he simplicity of the others, but I still like it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:21 am(Entry #3)
This cover is WAY different than what i expected. Its not like any of the other covers. Well it has the same style and all but the meaning is totally different. Bold is an excellent word. I really wonder too what this all means. IM SO EXCITED!!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:36 amI don’t know anything about chess, so it’s hard to find a deeper meaning to the cover.
It’s alright, but it’s not my favorite choice. I’m sure if I understood the meaning behind it I’d like it more. I do like, however, how they’ve kept up the theme of red, even though the white queen overpowers the red in this case.
I was surprised that Stephenie Meyer doesn’t like the “New Moon” cover.
As for the chapter, I ran into Borders and read it, haha. But I can’t be teased by first chapters anymore; I’m ready for the whole thing.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:47 amI read the first chapter and thought it was AMAZING! I can not wait until BD comes out! I just about fainted when I saw the cover! I love how it keeps you guessing on what is going to happen. It’s got a lot of people shooting out theories and it has made me very excited! It’s a new look for a twilight cover (it has more detail), but it sticks to the basic red and black theme.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:50 amI really like the cover, just because it’s different than the others. I make you have to think more to find it’s true meaning. I’ve been tossing idea’s back and forth, trying to decide what it means and I think I’ve finally got it. I think that the white queen piece symbolizes Bella as human. And as the queen, she can move anywhere on the board, or choose anything. And I think that the red pond piece rrepresents Bella as a vampire. It’s a pond because she’ll basically be a newborn.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:50 ami like the cover but i wish it had more!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:51 amall her bookcovers r simple which is good becuz it showz that dont judge a book by its cover the covers r simple but the books r extroardinary
I think maybe (more like I am hoping…) the pawn is Bella before the change, and it’s showing her journey (across the board) to become a vampire (the Queen)… this may be a long shot, but that’s what I want to happen so that’s what I’m reading into it
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:54 amI like the cover but I don’t think it really goes with the other covers in the series. The other ones are kind of simple, but this one has a lot happening.I’ve already read the first chapter and it mad me laugh.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:58 amWhat I like about the Twilight Saga book covers is that there is a reason behind the cover image. You need to finish the book and think about how the image goes with the story and you can come up with an idea that is totally different from other’s ideas/
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:05 amThe morning that Eclipse special edition came out, about a half an hour after the bookstore opened, my friends and I were in there reading the first chapter of breaking dawn. It was sooo good, and its hard to wait until August for the rest.
.
I read somewhere predicting what the cover meant and they said something like when a pawn gets all the way across a chess board they become a queen, so maybe that means Bella is making it, and will become a vampire. I sure hope this is the meaning
(Please enter me for the drawing! Thank you!)
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:12 ami went to borders and read the first chapter with my cousin. i was laughing so hard the cousin told me to be quiet before i gave us away! haha. anywyas i wont spoil the entertainment for those who havent read it so i’ll get to my ideas about the cover… i think that jacob is the pawn in the background… he’s being put on the backburner
and edward is her chosen white king/queen in the front
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:13 amI like the cover, but I think the white’s a little too dominant I have no idea what it’s supposed to mean, though everybody seems to think the Pawn is Bella.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:17 amya. i’m really undecided at this point about the cover. sometimes i think its edward and jacob, other times i think that its just two sides of bella, (like the magnets), then i think that its bella and edward, then bella and jacob, i just don’t know!! but i do like it!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:23 amI cant wait to read the book and determine what the picture means.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:24 amI have theories but they cant be determined until i read the book.
I CANT WAIT!
I LOVE anything related to Stephenie Meyer. I have absolutely no idea what meaning the cover art has. I read the first chapter and it was amazing, I needed some Bella & Edward already…everytime I think about Breaking Dawn, I think I might go crazy if the days don’t go by faster.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:25 amhmm when i first saw it i thought it was ok, but when i think about it – like others said here – it doesn’t fit in with the simpler covers of the other books in the series and for that i find that i don’t really like it as much
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:29 ami’m guessing that breaking dawn will have some kind of a war going on (maybe with the volturi?) since theres chess involved
I like it, but it’s so unlike all the others . There’s a lot going on, as opposed to the simple covers we’ve grown to love .
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:32 amI am anxious to find out the meaning of it .
: )
After studying it for a while, I decided that I like the cover. It’s not as beautiful or elegant as the other covers, but it must have some pretty heavy symbolism behind it. I’ve heard many theories, but right now I’m putting my bets with the one that states that the red chess piece is blushing, warm, fragile Bella and the white chess piece is Bella after she gets changed — strong, white, cold, powerful. Still, I think it’s going to be a little deeper than that.
I read the first chapter, and it was awesome. I’m not going to discuss it here, in case anyone reading this comment hasn’t read it yet, but it seems like a great start to a great book. Can’t wait!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:40 amI think the cover is beautiful, though I haven’t quite analyzed it yet. I just can’t imagine who would be a pawn. There are certainly minor characters who could be pawns, but I’d like to believe only major characters are put on the cover. I think the chess board symbolizes some huge struggle in Breaking Dawn, something other than Bella’s changing (if she does). I can’t wait to read it. I already read the first chapter, but instead of satiating my hunger, it just made me want to read more.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:41 amI like her covers, they’re very minimalistic. I don’t read too much into whether or not the cover has alot to do with the book. I also don’t read the first chapter, I’d rather just wait for the book and read it all at once.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:45 amI have so many thoughts about the cover!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:52 am1). It could be Bella in her past life and as a vampire (pawn=vulnerable human bella, queen=strong vampire Bella)
2). The pawn is Jacob and the queen is bella
3). The queen is bella and the pawn represents her lust for blood.
4). Jacob’s bella and Edward’s bella
Either way, i think that the queen is bella. It’s probably going to be really deep or something…
I got the Eclipse S.E. the day it came out, ran home (more like drove, or got driven), sprinted towards my room, and devoured the first chapter, screamed at the cover, and got mad because I wanted to read more.
Here are my thoughts on the cover:
I really like it. It’s mysterious, elegant, and very foreshadow-y. I do believe that vampire Bella is the white queen, and the red pawn is the human Bella, which is losing, or being lost. The cover is much more complex than the others, but that might mean that the book takes on the same quality.
The first chapter:
Hahahah, I love the fact that Edward gave Bella a “before” and an “after” car. People are wondering what the after car could possibly be. Well, I think I have the answer to that one. Remember in.. hm, was it in New Moon? When Bella and Edward are riding in her truck and Edward says something like “You know what you’d love? A nice little Audi coupe. Very quiet, lots of power…” There you have it. But the before car is just hilarious. I mean, come on, missile proof?! But Edward is overtly paranoid about Bella’s safety…
I’m not going to write any more, because someone might not have read it, or doesn’t want to (?!). But those are my thoughts on Breaking Dawn (so far!). Btw, I hate the fact that Jacob is gone…
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:02 ami love the cover!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:03 amI love the cover. The covers to the Twilight books are very symbolic (well, at least to Stephenie Meyer with the exception of New Moon). I think the cover is that the queen is Edward (or Bella’s love for Edward), and the red pawn is Jacob (or Bella’s love for Jacob).
And I read the chapter immediately. It is sort of like my ‘fix’ for the addiction. Lol.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:04 amI saw the cover and it certainly stands out! I think the Queen is obviously Bella, and the red pawn in her bloodlust? Maybe because the queen can move any way, it signifies all the options open to her (werewolves, becoming a vampire, staying human?)
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:04 amThat’s just my thought, but I think the cover looks good and I want to know what it actually means!
This cover strikes me because it is so much more bold than the other covers. This is going to be one serious book! That said, I did read the sneak preview of Breaking Dawn…i was excited simply because it was a taste of a highly anticipated book, but it certainly didn’t offer much insight!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:04 amWaiting for August!!!
I like the cover. It’s very different from the covers of the other books, though still simple. I have all sorts of theories about what the cover could mean (most of them have already been mentioned in comments). I’m almost certain that it represents a war though, since chess is basically a game of war.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:07 amim not sure how I feel about the cover to be honest. its very interesting at the very least. lol. and I am very excited for the book. I suppose I was expecting somthing a little simpler. lol. *ponders*
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:09 amThe cover is not what I was expecting, and so different from the others. Probably my least favorite. But maybe after I read it, I’ll understand more clearly…? thanks for the book win offer!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:10 amWell, I definitely think that the white queen symbolizes vampirism.. and the red, everything that she’s leaving behind, her human life & her friends…family…
…that’s my two cents.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:14 amI can’t wait to read Breaking Dawn!! The cover is really striking and I wonder what the meaning behind the cover is. I have lots of theories, but they can’t be determined until I read the book!!!! I can’t wait any longer!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:18 amThat’s an interesting cover choice.
I would like to know why the little pawn in the background is red instead of the normal black, and why the queen is so big. At least- how they portray it.
I hope everything will piece together when I get to read the book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:18 amAs posted on my blog, I loathe the cover. My loathing actually surprised me, because I absolutely love all the other covers. And yes, it’s a Queen chess piece.
I just don’t know…it’s not elegant enough. Symbolic? Yes. But they had the apple, the flower, the ribbon, then…chess? Doesn’t fit. Maybe I’ll feel different once I read the book.
NYC signing! Woo!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:20 amI loved the cover when I first saw it. I thought the queen was bella and it was white because she had been turned into a vampire, so she wouldnt have any blood in her. I think the red pawn is far away because she has left behind her humanity…I dont know. Its just my theory :]
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:26 amWow I hounestly don’t know what I’m going to do until Breaking Dawn comes out!!! I think this is my favourite cover so far because it is so bold and original and also peoplecan think of alot of theories just by looking at the cover. I think it shows Bellas transformation (at first a nobody but once a vampire a queen).
(And BTW I would like to be entered in the draw please.:) )
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:28 amsquee! i LOVE the cover. it’s so cool…
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:29 amI deffinitly think the queen piece is Bella. But I have yet to figure out what the red one means. But this is my favorite cover out of all of them.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:31 amI’m very interested in buying Eclipse Special Edition and reading the first chapter of Breaking Dawn.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:33 amSince I haven’t read Eclipse yet, I never really wondered what the cover of Breaking Dawn would be before it came out. I’m still not sure what the cover should suggest. Of course the Queen piece stands for Bella; the red pawn might symbolize Edward and blood. I can’t wait to read and really find out.
I LOVE the cover!!!!! It really is my favorite one!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:34 amAt first I thought the cover had too much white in it but then I realized what the white was for. I’m assuming the white queen represents Bella as a vampire (powerful, pale, and beautiful), while the red pawn represents Bella as a human (with her blood still in tact). I’m sure many people came to this assumption as well. I can’t wait to get my hands on it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:35 amI like the cover. Its not really what I was expecting, but thats one reason I like it so much. See I think that the red pawn is Bella as a human. You know all small and helpless. I think that the white queen is Bella as a vampire, all strong and beautiful. Well thats what I think!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:36 amI LOVE THE COVER!!! It will probably be easier to connect to the story than the others, I think. It’s a little reminder of how Bella’s going to change from human(red) to vamp(white). Anyway, love it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:47 amWow!! I really do love the covers to our wonderful Twilight series, and this one is no different. We all knew they would stick to the color scheme of course! I think it’s a little more, I don’t know, busy than the other covers. But I still love it.
I think it has significance to Bella being changed, but it could still have something to do with Jacob V. Edward. I’m not sure. Either way, I can’t wait to read it!!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:52 amI love the coever of all the books. when you see them in a store you know who and what they are. i’d have to say my fav is the cover of new moon, i just love how the flower looks.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:53 amI rather liked the cover…though it did surprise me that it was something with, like, a background. I mean, the hands on Twilight didn’t have a body behind them, the flower on New Moon didn’t have a garden behind it, the ribbon on Eclipse didn’t have a sewing machine behind it… Okay so that last one was silly, but sewing machines are what I think of when I think of ribbons! Hehe…
My friend sat in the book store and read the first chapter of BD
My other friend’s grandma bought the book for her, and then she lent it to me
So I don’t have to wait for chapter one! Just the rest of the book like everyone else
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:54 amI LOVE this cover. I must admit, in the beginning I wasn’t quite sure what to think about it. It didn’t really match with the others, but after actually thinking about it , what it could mean, I really loved it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:01 pmOme the Volturi is coming. That’s what I first thought when I looked at the cover. But my second thought was .- could this be jake ? ( let’s hope not )

I really love the cover. I think it’s my favorite of all four. Although I did like the Twilight cover a lot too. When Eclipse Special Edition came out, I was scared to read the first chapter. I thought it might be like the fisrt chapter of New Moon, where it left you hanging and you needed to no RIGHT THEN what happened next. (I went out and bought New Moon not 30 minutes after I read the first chapter in the back of Twilight!) I’m relieved it didn’t happen like that.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:04 pmI think the cover is beautiful! I actually pulled it off of my Eclipse SE and put it on my wall. I’m going along with those that think that pawn to queen represents Bella’s transformation from lowly human to powerful vampire.
As for whether or not I’ll read the first chapter… yeah, been there, done that. LOL!
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:05 pmOMG! ok my first thought…
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:06 pmchess theme:the many battles that will occur in the process of things being wraped up for this epic saga.
red pawn:bella as a human!
white queen:bella as a vampire!
Ahhhhhhh i hope im right!
The cover is very intriguing….I believe that the queen would be Bella…. and the pawn is probably Jacob (b/c pawns can only move specifically…. and his kiss already took him 2 spaces in the beginning)
I read the first chapter of BD…. it was a little different (I wasn’t expecting the “idea” of how the Mother felt.. to be so…. calm)
I AM COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS….. =D
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:10 pmI’m actually in love with this cover. I really like that they stuck with the whole black cover with a red item. this cover is just so beautiful.
the red piece is a pawn and it’s the weakest piece in chess. the white piece is in fact a QUEEN (not a king) and it’s the most powerful piece in chess. i’m not sure what this means although i’m leaning towards it having to do with bella’s transformation. possibly, it has to do with bella’s power after being turned. the tagline is that it will ‘take your breath away’. breath being italicized. duh…vampires have to breathe. i don’t know. nobody really does know and nobody will until august 2nd. all i do know is that we should all remember that stephenie meyer always has a few tricks up her sleeve.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:16 pmbella&edward101
I have had some deep thinking about the cover and it came down to this:
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:16 pmI see the red pawn standing in the white space as human Bella standing in the light. But then the huge white queen in the black space as strong vampire Bella standing in the darkness. I think that since the queen is closer to us it means that Bella’s death will be close and human Bella will be slipping away.
(contest entry)

Of course I had to read the first chapter. I had the opportunity so I took it.
I really do not know what to think about the first chapter, though.
Also a lot of people do not like the Breaking Dawn cover, but I love it. It is more bold and bighter but I believe it is going to say a lot about what happens in the book. By the end of it we are all going to say “Wow, this cover actually makes sense”. Well, I hope that is how it is going to be.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:20 pmMy theory is that the chess pieces might indicate a final showdown between the Cullens and either the werewolves or the Volturi. For some reason, I’m banking on the Volturi because chess is a game of strategy and for some reason i see the Volturi using more chess-like strategy if they ever came looking for Bella. The werewolves I think would use more military-like strategy. At least that’s what I think.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:27 pmI’m a very big fan of the cover. They stuck with the original color scheme while still picking an awesome cover. To me, it’s confirmation that there will be some type of war in Breaking Dawn. Maybe with werewolves, maybe with the Volturi, who knows?
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:29 pmI went to the bookstore the day Eclispe SE came out the read Chapter 1 of Breaking Dawn. I loved it.
I was surprised by the cover actually, it’s not really what I was expecting. I definetly like it though, just a little confused by it. I think the queen is Bella, ofcourse, but I can’t figure out if the pawn is Edward or Jacob. I think it might be Jacob though, the pawn trying to stop the queen, maybe Jacob trying to stop Bella’s wedding.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:31 pmHmmm, it’s an interesting cover! It really signifies the whole Edward and Bella difference. I think Edward is the red pawn in the background, and Bella, the white. It shows that she loves him and it’ll be a huge ending where I hope she will still end up with him!
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:31 pmI love this cover. It’s my favorite one of the series. I wish people wouldn’t think it’s ugly though. It looks like the only two pieces left are the queen and pawn. Maybe the fact that it’s just those two means everybody else might be wiped out? Even though a chess game ends with the falling of the king. I’m way too excited for this book and cannot wait for it to come out.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:37 pmI like the cover. It is alot more bold than the others. All the covers of Stephenie’s books i like, but the twilight red against black themed covers are my favorite because i like the effect and meaning (blood and darkness?) My theory about the Breaking Dawn cover is it symbolizes Bella in her human form passing over into her vampire form the red pawn being=insignificant blood filled human the white queen being=pure white, powerful beautiful vampire. And this is a chess game and in chess when a pawn reaches the end of the board it becomes a queen…if it gets there..so maybe this theme of chess will be present in the book, about Bellas journey to “the otherside of the board” Another theory is similar but Bella could be the red pawn but the white queen in an enemy that could possibly reach Bella before she reaches the end of the board aka vamprism.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:39 pmAll in all it is a very interesting cover. I did read the first chapter..I just couldn’t help myself i went into my bookstore took down Eclipse special edition and read for about 20 minutes. I got quite a few stares but the 1st chapter i may now inform you is very funny, filled with Stephenie’s original style.
i usually cant figure out what a cover means until after i’ve read the book a couple of times!!! and i guess that saga continues!! although it does make the book look very intriging..
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:42 pmIt’s a bigger cover then the last three, but i love it. It makes me wonder if it’s one of those meaningful covers that stephenie came up with herself or if it’s a red herring like New Moon that means nothing. My theory about the cover would be that the white piece rules all, an the red pawn has no where to run and hide. Checkmate, end game.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:42 pmI love this cover it really makes you think! I’m curious to see if the white really symbolizes purity like alot of people are guessing or if it holds irony within.
on June 16th, 2008 at 12:56 pmI am sure that the cover will make sence once we all read the book. It should concidering Stephanie said that she was able to design most of the cover herself!
I love the cover. Out of all the covers, this one is my favorite. The white piece is a queen, and I am betting it represents Bella, but I don’t have a clue what it means. A lot of people think the pawn will represent Jacob. I can’t wait to find out!
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:18 pmAnother entry for the contest. I am not going to speculate on the cover, I am sure it will be clear once I have read all of the book and I dont want to be disappointed if I guess wrong. I read the first chapter and it only made me more anxious for more. At least the wait isnt too far off, only a a little over a month or so left.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:25 pmThe cover is interesting. I think that Bella is the pawn, but I dont know who the queen is. The explaination to this cover will really be interesting.
The first chapter just made me want to read even more of the book! I can’t wait for August 2nd! My best friend pre-ordered the book for us and we’re going to stay up all night reading it!
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:28 pmIt symbolizes BELLA! I’m pretty sure…
Can’t wait to find out!
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:31 pmi went out and bought eclipse special edition and i can’t get the first chapter of the book out of my head.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:35 pmI love the breaking dawn cover art i think its going to have to do something with the book but i mean the pawn playing with the queen doesn’t make since so i have no clue what could be comming.
I like the cover. Well I’m trying not to read too much into it.
I feel a bit slighted that the publishers want people to buy another edition for Eclipse, just to get the 1st chapter of Breaking Dawn. Not sure why that can’t be posted on the website like the others. Oh well….I suppose I can just go to the bookstore and read it there.
Jenn
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:35 pmI love the cover but what struck me was how different it was from the other more minimalistic covers. I think it is representing Edward’s (white queen) ultimate triumph over Jacob(red pawn), but there are a lot of other things it could stand for.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:40 pmI like the cover – it’s quite different from the others in that it’s less simplistic, but I like the boldness of it. Definitely suggests a vampire theme – the red being blood, so I suppose Edward would be the pawn? O:
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:42 pmi think that jacob is the red one and edward is the white queen because he can defeat all!! which includes the pawn, which is jacob!! ha ha! i can’t wait to read it!! yay!
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:48 pmI think it might be vampire Bella (the red queen) taking over human Bella (white queen). I’m just guessing.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:49 pmstephenie said it had a huge significance.
on June 16th, 2008 at 2:55 pmi’ve heard a lot of different theories, and i’m ver nervous and excited to find out what it means !
i have no idea what i think it means.
my mind is going crazy and jumping to a new conclusion ever ten seconds !
it’s so intense.
i can’t wait to read the book !
i know it will be amazing.
The cover was totally unexpected but i love it! I really want to know what it means tho. reading the first chapter just made me go crazy and made want to read Breaking Dawn so much!! Your so lucky to have been able to go!! im so jelous right now!!:P
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:00 pmIt is a very interesting cover and i am certainly dying to know wha it means. I think maybe that Bella is the pure queen and she is on the black square becasue she is approaching a darker life (if you will). Jacob, having always been described as red skinned, is the red pawn. Pawn because Bella used him and now he is behind her. he is on the white because he is still alive and will always be alive (well he won’t be a vampire i mean). Although he is behind her, she can’t get him out of her life. This foreshadows a final confrotation of vampires and werewolves. yep so thats my interpretation.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:02 pm(this is to be entered into the giveaway)
I like the cover a lot its bold and something that would catch the eye of a buyer just like the other covers. If the pieces on the front stand for anyone i would say the beautiful piece in front might symbolize bella after she is bitten ((if that does happen)) to show her transformation but i could be totally wrong. Or it could mean ((like a game of chess)) that a bigger battle could be coming.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:04 pmWhen I first saw this cover, I was like “omg, wtf?”- it just didn’t seem to me to go with any of Stephenie Meyer’s other covers. but then I was reading a transcript of one of her interviews and she said that she actually designed the cover by herself, so it must mean SOMETHING- right?
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:07 pmwhat it means to me: there is a white queen towards the front of the cover, and a red pawn. To me, both of these symbolizes Bella- the red pawn: her human life, red symbolizing her blood, and the pawn is usually seen as the easy chess piece to throw aside during a chess game. The white queen: her vampire life- cold and hard. A queen, lovely, important, and hard to destroy.
So I think that Bella will indeed become a vampire, but that is just my opinion! Can’t wait for the book to come out!
I think the white queen is Bella and the red pawn is some conflict that is in Breaking Dawn! That, of course is just a thought! I can’t WAIT until BREAKING DAWN come out!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:07 pmI think the white queen is Bella and the red pawn is some conflict that is in Breaking Dawn! That, of course is just a thought! I can’t WAIT until BREAKING DAWN comes out!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:08 pmi ? the cover.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:10 pmdefinetely not what i expected though, but whenever do stephenie’s books give us what we expect?
Eclipses’ cover was the only one I really got, it was how the clean break between Bella and Edward didn’t happen and instead it was all messy. I’m not really sure about this, but heres my guess for breaking dawn; chess is a game of skill, wits, and diplomacy. The cover has a white queen and a red pawn. The queen can do pretty much anything, there are almost no rules governing its movement, but if it is captured the game is over. The pawn is a very weak piece and very insignifigant, but has the power to capture the queen and end the game. I think it may have something to do with the least powerful character having the power to determine the story’s outcome.
but truthfully i’m just as clueless as the next twilighter on this one. =D
-gab
i cant wait until it comes out.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:11 pmas for the cover i think the queen is bella and the pawn is jacob and the whole bored is edward.
jacob fights however he can.
edward patiently stays and wait and thinks every decision bella makes is write for her.
so edward wont interfere in the game, but jacob will.
the cover is very diffrent from the rest but i like that it still has red in it.
Okay. When I first saw the cover my first reaction was that it wasn’t as beautiful as the others. It just seemed out of place for me but I quickly got over that because it doesn’t matter about the cover…it’s the content.
My boyfriend (who was amusing me) and I stayed up till 2 a.m. discussing what the cover could possibly mean. I had the same question as to what piece was the first one: the king or the queen. I realized later that it was the queen. So I started to think of every possible way that this could work in the story although Stephenie has said many times that the covers have no relation to the story. It’s fun trying either way.
It finally hit me as my boyfriend kept saying that Bella is going to be the queen of all vampires (he’s never read the book only knows what I’ve told him). I started seeing Bella as the queen piece after she is turned into a vampire who is strong and more dominant. The pawn is also Bella as her weakling human self. I took it in the way that the vampire Bella was leaving the human Bella behind. She wasn’t going to be this weak pawn piece she was going to be this strong queen vampire piece that is lethal.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:12 pmoops, that ? was supposed 2 be a heart.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:12 pmWhen I first saw the cover I was a bit surprised since its very different from the others…I still LOVE it thought. The reason i love it because there are so many meaning that the cover can have. But I think that the both pieces represent Bella. The read pawn symbolizing Bella as human being and the blood that flows through her and then The White Queen symbolizing Bella as a vampire..strong and beautiful. Still i won’t be sure until i read the whole book althought the first chapter was a good preview.
P.S this is an entry for the contest too.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:12 pmHmmm…
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:12 pmI’m really not sure how to interpret this cover.
As usual, Stephanie’s new book cover really makes no sense (probably until you read the book) Not that New Moon’s cover ever made any sense to me… -_-
But, anyways, I think that Bella is the queen, and the red pawn represents the danger that is following her…
I don’t think she’ll survive this fight, in Breaking Dawn. =(
Oh and fyi, this is an entry to the contest. =P
I like the cover, it makes the want to read the book.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:28 pmWell, the minute I saw the cover, my friend and I immediately began to analyze it. (Stupid Troy). I think that the white queen is Bella because white symbolizes purity, innocence, good and the queen is the chesspiece everyone wants. The queen could also represent Bella’s transformation. A pawn can become a queen if it reaches the other end. Bella’s finally reaching the end of her human journey. Jacob is the red pawn, for red and white are opposing forces and the placement of the pawn shows that it is not too significant. The pawn in placed in the queen’s shadow and pawns are plentiful. Edward would not be a pawn, he would be the king. He is that important.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:33 pmI really want to get the Eclipse Special Edition. I want the poster of Breaking Dawn on my wall! I am really intrigued about the cover art, its beautiful. The queen piece looks so pure, can it represent Bella’s humanity? Or the Cullen’s white skin and power? I cant wait to find out, so keep posting!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:38 pmomg i LOVE the cover..like it resembles Bella and Edward so jmuch. Edward being the White cold playing piece and bella being the red one..as in with blood HAH i LOVE IT
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pmI love this cover. The first thing I noticed when I saw it was how red seemed to be the dominating color on the last books, but white is definitely the more dominant one on Breaking Dawn. I think that this change is because of Bell’s change from human to vampire. I believe that the red pawn represents Bella as a human… hence the red, since she has blood flowing through her. And then the white queen represents her after she is changed into a strong, pale vampire.
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:46 pmWhen I first saw this cover, I interpreted it as Edward being the strong white piece and Jacob being the red pawn seeing as who Edward is pale, strong, and older and Jacob is dark, hot (both ways
), but also a very important role. But Rebecca above has a good theory that the red pawn is Bella as a human and the white queen is her as a strong vampire. Please enter me in the contest!! Thanks!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:50 pmat first when i saw the cover i was like what is it supposed to mean. but when i read that it supposed to represent bella i thought about it and it made sense. so im ok with the cover, at first it didnt seem like it fitted in with the other covers but now im used to it and i like it a lot!
PLEASE ENTER ME IN THE CONTEST!! THANK YOU!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 3:55 pmI love the cover- not going to venture on what represents which character, because although the cover art USUALLY means something, I remind readers of Mrs. Meyer’s comments on the New Moon cover- it was a red and white flower thing, and she said didn’t mean anything, it just looked cool. basically. So the chess might not mean anything but complexity, strategy, or sacrifice.
plz contest entry kthnx!
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:00 pmi think the cover is very unique.
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:31 pmbut i dont know how i feel about it yet.
i dont hate it but im not sure if i like it.
maybe after i read breaking dawn and when we all find out what it means i’ll have a better look at it.
i think the queen could be bella and there will probably be a battle…
p.s. sign me up for your book contest again
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:32 pmI love the cover
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:33 pmbut i would love to get a hint to what it means
i have my own theory too but
i think its more obvious
and the the white piece is a queen
:]
This cover is different then the rest. there’s a lot more going on comparatively, i kinda like it. the chess thing is cool.
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:38 pmfor me, the cover seems different than the other books. it definitely goes along with the red and black theme, but it’s different because most of the books have one significant item on the cover whereas this is like a whole scene which has a lot going on. i don’t hate it, but i definitely didn’t expect this. i think both the chess pieces are bella, the red pawn is her as a human (still with her red blood) and the white queen is her as a a vampire (white, elegant, beautiful). i can’t wait till the rest of the book comes out!
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:43 pmI like the cover…so far. I want to see how it ties into the story before I decide whether I really like it, or not. I think that the white queen represents Bella as a vampire (powerful, strong, pure) with the red pawn representing her former, weaker self.
on June 16th, 2008 at 4:56 pmI am loving this contest!
It sure got me thinking! Not that I have any plausible thoughts, but I’m a lot more intrigued than I was before. (Is that even possible?)
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:00 pmI like the cover, it’s cool kinda different from the others, but I don’t believe anyone’s theories, im just gonna wait till it comes out.
GIVE ME THE BOOKS AND T-SHIRT!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:05 pmThe cover is okay. It’s a little busy compared to the last three, but I think it works.
I read the first chapter and it was good!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:06 pmThis is a pretty cool cover.
I’ve seen many different theories.
One of them is, that the ‘k’ in breaking is edward [king]. and that the queen represents bella after the change[pale, strong, marble, powerful], and the pawn represents bella before as a human[weak, blush, red-blood.
Another was that the chess board represents the battle field, and that the pawns represents the werewolves[red=warmth]and that the queens are the vampires [white=pale]
Either way, I love it!! (:
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:15 pmThe cover’s fine but honestly I don’t really care that much. There are some covers of books that I really like and that catch my eye but in general, cover art doesn’t mean very much to me. Sorry.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:16 pmOkay, I can see this differently. Both pieces are Bella: red pawn=Bella alive and white queen=Bella vampire. Or I think Bella’s the queen as a vamp and the red pawn could be all humanity in her past. Or Could be white queen is for vampires and their extra abilites and red pawn is for humanity (maybe the pack) which is definitely weaker, but still can defeat the queen. Just my thoughts.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:22 pmI think the cover of Breaking Dawn is definitely appealing to the eyes and definitely to Twilight fans, like me. In my opinion, I think the chess pieces are representing Bella and Edward as a couple. And I think the pawn wou;d be Jacob… small, young, and just not good enough for Bella. I cant wait to find out if I am right
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:23 pmWhen I first saw it I didn’t like it at all. I don’t know why, it just didn’t fit for me. Then I started pondering the possibilities of the symbolism behind it (I blame my honors major themes class) and I am really excited now to see the meaning behind it! There are so possibilities!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:31 pmHi, I think the cover is okay. I really enjoy book covers and the cover would not make me read the blurb! I am thinking that it could have been more antique looking. Thanks, Cindi
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:34 pmI think it’s something to do with the white, spotlight vampire and the dark, Quileute pawn in the background. Typical. But it also could be Bella, being taken advantage of by something else.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:37 pmat first when i saw the cover i thought it was ok, i wasn’t jumping for joy or anything like that but now it is growing on me and i really like it now! As for who those chess pieces resemble I have no idea but when it Breaking Dawn comes out, hopefully we will find out! Great review by the way!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:38 pmI LOVE THE COVER!!!! It’s more colorful! The preface scared me!! LoL… I’m worried… I think that The pawn resembles Bella while she is human. Weak and blushing. Then, the queen or whatever represents her as a vampire; powerful and pale! Yahoo for the contest!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:39 pmVery brief, but you summed up basically everything.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:40 pmI am quite positive that the queen is Bella. Now, notice how it’s white. I think that this means that Bella will turn into a vampire, having very pale skin as described in every book in the series. The white symbolizes the very pale skin of a vampire. Now, the red pawn. I think that it symbolizes Jacob because, as we all know, he is a werewolf. When I see the color red, I see it as a very warm color. Red – warm color; Jacob – warm blooded. See where I’m going here? So when I look at the cover in this light, I see Jacob (or the red pawn) looking at Bella (or the white queen) at a distince, knowing that the vampire and the werewolf are mortal enemies. He would feel that he wouldn’t have the same relationship with her as he did before, all because Bella decided to change.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:42 pmI like the cover. I actually bought the special edition of eclipse (i just recently got into the series so i don’t own all the books) and of course went straight for that first chapter. I almost wish i didn’t because now i am so excited for breaking dawn and really don’t want to wait!! Thanks for your post!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:44 pmWhen I first saw it, I couldn’t believe it was the cover of Breaking Dawn. I really didn’t like it because I thought it didn’t really go with the rest of the books. But now I think it looks great. It really stands out and I think Bella is the queen in the cover. Also… eneter me!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:45 pmI love the cover, there’s so much symbolism in it. It could represent Bella leaving her human life/love for jacob behind her. or it might be saying that something small will overpower something big?
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:51 pmand…please enter me
omg!i absolutely love the cover.
i think the queen represents bella and and the pawn is jacob.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:51 pmoverall this is just is making me more crazy until i read the book!
I like it… but I don’t LOVE it. But I do think it’s bold, like you said. It’s interesting, and makes you ask question and think about how the book will relate to it. (I still like the Twilight cover best :])
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:52 pmThe cover is quite striking, I must say. I think I remember reading somewhere (it must have been here) that the cover art doesn’t really mean anything and Stephenie isn’t all the crazy about some of it, but it still seems like it must means something.
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pmI absolutly love it! The chess… very… Twilighty!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:59 pmI think the Voturi is the Red Pawn and the huge white Queen is The “Vegitarians” or… Edward and Bella’s love for each other.
I put some thought into it and I love it!
THANK YOU 4 THE WIN STEPH’S BOOK CONTEST!!!
I love the cover. Can’t wait to read the book. It’s gonna be so awesome. Yay!
on June 16th, 2008 at 5:59 pmI like the cover. It’s the queen. At first, I was like “Bella’s the queen of the vampires!” haha. Your opinions are interesting.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:00 pmI love how they keep the same color schemes for all the books, makes them all seem to flow together, for lack of a better word. I am DYING for Breaking Dawn!
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:09 pmi posted about the cover on my blog as well! i really like it, i am betting on some sort of symbolism that will play out in the story. i have so many theories! i can’t wait until aug!
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:15 pmome, i love that cover! i’ve had to stop myself whenever i found myself trying to decipher the meaning of that simple picture. i just don’t want to be disapointed when/if i find out that the cover has no meaning like the cover of new moon. but still! there are soo many possibilities!! i love chess anyways so its fun look look at
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:20 pmI’m a dork and bought the special ed. of Eclipse (I’m so making the Team Edward shirt
) I read the first chapter and I really can’t wait 46 more days! The cover art is a lot different than the other books but I like it. The queen is probably Bella but the pawn I am not so sure of. The word pawn has such an interesting connotation I can’t fathom to guess who it is. I can’t wait to read the book and put it all together.
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:21 pmI can’t wait till Breaking Dawn comes out tear tear thought because its going to be the last one 4 a while but I am preety sure its going to amazing just like the other books can’t wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:29 pmI like the cover but it feels much busier than the other covers for this series. I don’t know if it will look as good on the shelf when it’s next to the other three. Does that make sense?
As for the first chapter…already read it! I read it at the bookstore the day it came out. Wonder how many people do that without buying the special edition?
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:31 pmthis cover is so cool. i wonder if i actually has to do with the actual story unlike the other books (like new moon and elcipse) it makes me so excited to read the book. her covers are always so luring and i find myself looking at them for several minutes
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:50 pmi really can’t wait to read the first chapter but i know i have to or else i am going to suffer all that much more until the book comes out
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:52 pmI LOVE THE COVER! it was so shocking and brought me back to a scene in eclipse with alice and edward playing chess. I think Bella is the white queen. White usually symbolizes purity and all that. But the red pawn im not so sure of. I already bought special edition and am completly even MORE excited for the 4th book! can NOT wait!
on June 16th, 2008 at 6:57 pmokay so i have a lot of theories…(and i simplified them so they won’t be so long)
1) the cover is so complex and stuff because the book will be too…
2)The chess board because maybe there will be a war, and there will be a lot of shifting a lot since like chess everything is moving…
3) kind of attached to #2.. the “battle” will be between warewolves(red) and vampires (white), and i think sice the white queen is the dominant one, then the vampires will win.
4) White queen signifies Bella turning into a vampire since it looks all marble and stuff…
5) White queen= bellas new self
red pawn = bellas old self
6) Queen= bella
pawn = either edward or jacob
7) the queen can also move in any direction whereas the pawn is kind of like…well… it is the one that kind of… commits suicide??.. in order to protect the rest
however if achieves to get to the other side of the board it can turn into any it peice it wants (might be bella)
9) since the queen can go in any direction…well so can bella
10) somebody will be left in the past…
11) Either Edward or Jacob will die
because in order for a game of chess to be won, one of the kings has to die( the game is over when there is only one king left, and whoevers king is left wins)…but it doesn’t nesserarily have to be death if the piece(character) is captured(killed)
12) The battle/war could also be internal
13)whatever the type of battle it is… it will revolve around stategy
14)white could also sybolize bella getting married [if it is a queen and the queen is bella] … (but i don’t really think that is the main thing)
15)If eclipse’s cover was kind of meant Bella breaking of her ties to her past then…( i think you could figure this out)
I am sorry i am just rambling about things that i think…. I am sure that i reapeated myself quite a lot actually…
Well yeas those are Some of my thoughts on the cover
————-
LOVE the first chapter, you can tell that Jacob is still going to be a major part of that book by the way he is brought up in the first chapter, its not over like she said in eclipse. Edward is so cute by gettin her that car.
Oh, did I mention that i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE… the cover for breaking Dawn. I think it is my favorite. However first I have to make sure what it actually means
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:16 pmJust seeing the cover makes me anxious *bites fingernails*. It seems to be a lot busier than the other ones, not to mention more…tactical. I hope that is saying things about the direction of the book. I’d really love to see some serious plot twists.
But I do like the cover. Chess is intensely fawesome.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pmThe cover is pretty! …But I don’t get it. I’m thinking…the queen is Bella, but the red player? And there’s only one? I’m so confused. Maybe the board itself symbolizes something?
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:22 pmThe cover threw me off at first when I saw it, but after reading some theories from others, I am now convinced of my own theorie. I believe that the red pawn in the background is Bella’s former life, everything that she ends up losing. In the game of chess, the pawns are normally the first ones to go. And the White Queen or King, is the end result of her life. Its what she now has to deal with, in the game of chess, the queen and the king are basically the key pieces that you need to stay alive, with this in mind, just think that the white chess piece is her end result, and there is no going back on anything that she has done in the past, either she stays alive and wins the game of life, or dies.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:27 pmThe cover is very interesting…I’ll take my shot at finding the meaning of it. Maybe the White Queen is Bella as she finally decideds exactly what she wants…remember in Twilight, she toils over want she is going to decide, however, once she makes up her mind she follows through with it. With Edward go along with it as well? I HAVE NO CLUE!!! Now, I haven’t read New Moon or Breaking Dawn, so I am probably out in the cold with my analysis, but it’s still fun try and decipher!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:34 pmi don’t really understand the cover. i’ve heard many things like, “both pieces are bella” and things like that. i see what they mean because bella loves both edward and jacob, but i just don’t like it.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pmi absolutely love the cover! i actually think the white queen is edward, and the red pawn is jacob, and they grow further apart in the book. or the red pawn could be bella and edward and bella are separated by other people who like him/her, like the theme in midsummer’s night dream, but in the end they reunite! i can’t wait to find out what happens though nevertheless, even if my theory is completely wrong!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pmI’m not sure what to make of the Breaking Dawn cover. I don’t really understand the pawn and Queen pieces. But to be completely honest…. it’s the coolest of all the covers.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pmI don’t know exactly how i feel about it yet. it seems really different to me compared to the other three covers. The other three seem….. natural or sumthing in that category. But on the other hand this cover seems to have a secret meaning behind it that everyone seems to be trying to unravel. I give it a 7/10 but i CANNOT wait!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:48 pmI love this cover! It leaves so much to speculation, Stephany Myers says that her covers reveal to much… Humm i wonder.
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:53 pmI ALMOST PEED MY PANTS WHEN I HEARD THAT EDWARD AND BELLA ARE FINALY GETTING MARRIED!!! AND I CAN’T WAIT TO READ YOUR NEW BOOK!!! I’M SO EXITED!!! I AM GOING TO TRY AND BUY IT AS FAST AS I CAN!!!!!!! I LOVE YOUR BOOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:55 pmThe are alot of ways to interpret the cover. Of course to me the queen represents Bella. Since the queen is white in color maybe it represents Bella as human. The color white in many cultures and religions is a symbol of purity and good. Bella is both of those. The red pawn could represent the vampires as a collective unit. The pawn is in the background waiting and watching the queen (Bella) in the middle . Lastly, the surround blackness could represent the unknown journey and obstacles ahead. But that is just my opinion. I like the cover no matter what just b/c it gets you thinking before you even open the book!
on June 16th, 2008 at 7:57 pmi really like this cover, except i had to ask a friend which chess pieces they were
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:03 pmThe cover is interesting but, confusing. Not all the covers have made complete sense so, I am a little unsure.
The first chapter was amazing. Only 46 days, 4 hours, 44 minutes, and 53 seconds left!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:15 pmI love this cover. It’s all about symbolism, very clever!
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:22 pmI am not sure how I feel about the cover, honestly. I will admit that it does catch my attention and I do like it in that sense; however, I have no idea what it means! It’s so difficult to figure it out. I think once I read the book and figure out what it means, I think I will like it a lot more.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:24 pmI read the first chapter at my local Barnes and Noble. I sat down in the middle of the floor and read it there…
I think this cover is much more elaborate than the other ones. If you think about it, the others have been simple objects(apple, flower, ribbon) that could mean differnt things. When you add the two pawns standing on a floor that is a checkerboard (black and white/good and bad???), it makes it much more elaborate and could add so much more meaning.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:30 pmI think the chess board is slightly more interesting than the ribbon and the flower. At least it gives me something to think about.
And nope, not reading the first chapter.
on June 16th, 2008 at 8:59 pmTo tell you the truth when I first saw the cover I hated it! I thought, as many others did as well, that it was too busy and had nothing to do with the story. But after looking it over and thinking about the other books I began to realize what It might suggest. In my opinion it is ment to symbolize a strategy that takes lots of concentration and much observation from both sides in order for one to win. The two sides of course would have to be good and evil but in this case I think its more about right and wrong. I think the cover is trying to give the illusion of Bella’s chooses and which it is that is right and which is wrong. Now this could be whether or not to become a vampire or it could be whether or not to take the right path after becoming a vampire (right path being feeding on animals as the Cullens do- and wrong being feeding on humans like Victoria and James) or it could just me the choses she is going to have to make about the people that she is going to have to leave behind such as family and especially Jacob. This is my take on the cover I may be right but most likely I’m going to be wrong lol but at least from the information given in the other books this is the conclusion I’ve come up with lol
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:04 pmHmm, yes, the white one is a queen.
I think that it could mean there is something bigger in store for Bella and the CUllens then they had hoped. Like, with the Volturri.
Or, something else I was considering.
Bella is a white queen piece because she stays human, and the pawn is Edward. He is red because he is a vampire, and sees himself as damned. I can see him decide to not turn Bella into a vampire because he thinks he’d ‘taint’ her, so to speak. This cover could be Edwards view watching Bella grow as a human, while he’s in the backround, secretly protecting her.
I dunno.
I certainly thought it was odd compared to the other covers. That’s why I wonder if maybe this cover does have something to do with the occurences in the book.
Contest entry, btw.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:05 pmOh, it’s deffinately a queen, I think. I think the queen is Bella, that she is going to have the most power, like, ever and is either going to overpower or use(one of the following): Jacob Black, Edward Cullen, OR the VOLTURI!(which would be the pawn). I could not wait so of course I read the first chapter. I liked it, and I’m especially glad they know where Jacob is, you know just so he didn’t die or anything. I think Jacob is deffinately coming back though. But it’s so nerve racking, because what all the released phrases and the first chapter support that they deffinately get married, but then I think maybe Bella decided to change her mind after all(about waiting or not(on her request)). OOH I’m excited. Oh and I’m also excited for the contest and drawing. I want to be entered. P.S. Where will you be on August 2nd, 2008?
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:08 pmI know for a fact that the white piece is a queen, since my brother plays chess. I think that it’s supposed to represent Bella at the end of the book, though I’m not sure what change was supposed to occur to her. I have no idea what the red one is, either. I also believe this is my favorite cover of the Twilight series.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:17 pmI definatly love the cover. It’s not really what i thought the cover would be but it good.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:24 pmPeople think that the white piece is bella and the pawn is something thats in her way like an obstacle.Nobody really knows who it is until someone reads it.I really want to go to the book store and read the first chapter but since i haven’t read eclipse i won’t get it, so i guess i have to wait till august.
I am definitely going to wait to read the first chapter of Breaking Dawn until it comes out and I have the book in my hands. Othewise I’ll be going nuts with suspense! I’m not sure what I think of the cove art for this book. I don’t think I’ll know if I like it or not until I read it. I won’t understand it until then.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:30 pmEntertainment weekly has the first chapter now. I havent read it yet. Not sure what to make of the cover yet either.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:31 pmThe white piece is a queen, which I can see other people have already informed you. (I need to play chess again. I’ve totally lost my edge and I was never that good.)
I think it seems like pretty basic symbolism – white for Bella, represents her humanity and youth well, and as for being in the forefront and the queen . . . she is the protagonist and the books center around her. Events hinge on her actions. Then Edward in the back, staying away from the light (can you imagine a sparkly chess piece), all red and stained by the experience of mucho years. Really, it’s pretty. I like the covers for the series, very striking, but TWILIGHT remains my favorite. The forbidden apple offered so sweetly . . . NEW MOON and ECLIPSE’s covers felt like they were just making matchy-match. Well, ECLIPSE’s was okay but I didn’t think the lily on NEW MOON did anything to represent the contents.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:35 pmThe cover looks really great. I really want to know what the book cover means though.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pmThis cover is my second favorite, my first being the Twilight cover. I like the boldness of these compared to the seemingly meaningless covers of Eclipse and New Moon, although many of my friends disagree with me there. I think the white piece is a queen and that it stands for Bella in her new vampiric form, no longer the blushing human (and pawn) that she was before. I’m entering in the giveaway contest. Thanks. :]
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:46 pmOOO! I love the cover, although I have a VERY vague idea of its meaning. Still, it looks AMAZING! I can’t wait for the book to come out! I’m also entering the contest.
on June 16th, 2008 at 9:52 pmOkay so my theory is this very long thing involving all the books. It centers around this idea of how all the book covers have white and red in them. (with the exception of eclipse which only has red.) the white stands for vampires, being pale (white) and the red is humanity because of our red blood.
In twilight the hands are white, symbolizing Edward, who is protecting the apple (red) which is bella. It may just be me but I think of apples as innocent which if you compare her in all the books, bella is in twilight.
New moon I’m still developing more. In general he flower is bella. As you can tell from the red “drop” the red is coming off, revealing white. This represents how much farther bella has come in making her decision to become a vampire.
In eclipse the red ribbon is bella. She is being ripped in two because she is being forced to choose between Edward and Jacob. The smaller part at the top is Jacob’s bella while the larger part is Edward’s bella.
Finally breaking dawn. As many have said the red pawn represents bella’s weakness as a human in her mortality. The queen is how she sees herself as a vampire, strong and indestructable. Although it can be debated the queen us widely thought to be the strongest chess piece.
Thanks for reading that if you got this far. And I would like to be entered in the contest. THANKS!
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pmI like the cover, although I’m dying to know for sure what it means. I thought the really interesting part was that the pawn in the back was red, not black like most chess sets you see around. Very interesting…
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:15 pmI Love the cover!! its much more intricate than the other 3 yet its still simplistic with the red accent. i think that Edward is the big white one and the smaller red one is Jacob. He is lurking in the shadows behind edward and its only a matter of time until he attacks.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pmI have read the first chapter, and believe me, this book will be one of her best. To me the cover is bold, but depending on where the book goes, that might be just what it needs. It doesn’t seem to tie in with the others as well, but seems to have more meaning behind it. I am not one to judge a book by its cover, but I do believe covers hold as much as the book. For a picture really is worth a thousand words. I do know that it is a picture of the queen, and not the king. Personally I believe the queen to be Isabella, and the pawn could be a wide variety of people. It could show Edward supporting her. Jacob still persuing her. The Volturi fearing her and what she has become. Or, like New Moon this cover could mean next to nothing to Stephenie Meyer and we could all be analysing it, and there is nothing to find. I am waiting(not well) for the book to come out, in hopes that it will shed some light on this mystery. Until then, all we can do is guess.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pmI don’t like this cover as much as the other ones, simply because it doesn’t match as much. The other three had a main focus on something red, floating right in the middle, and little else. This one has the white chesss piece as the main focus and the chess board underneath it and a red thing in the background. However, I am sure it is symbolic in some way, but since I have no idea how to play chess I’m not sure what the pieces themselves might mean. As for the colors, I think the white one is suppossed to represent Edward since he is so pale, and the red one is suppossed to be Jacob, hanging out in the back, since Bella is always talking about his “russet skin”.
on June 16th, 2008 at 10:46 pmI would love to be entered into the contest to win the Stephenie Meyer collection.
I’m not sure why, but I’m not liking the cover. To me, it’s just not clicking right now, but this is how I’ve always felt for the rest of the book covers as well until I actually read the book, which is weird (I think…or atleast to me it is weird).
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:05 pmBut anyways, right now, the cover doesn’t interest me. If I saw it on display, without knowing that it was “Breaking Dawn” at a bookstore, I don’t think I would go near it, which is pretty stupid because that’s judging a book by its cover. But whatever…. what really matters to me is what I’m reading, not the cover.
And like everyone else, I am very interested in what the cover’s meaning is, since the covers for the other books had some interesting meanings.
I read the first chapter after my friend acquired the book for her recent birthday, (since my parents won’t buy me the series and seem to think that magically, somehow, I will acquire mucho dinero to buy the series myself) and I thought it was just a regular good-written first chapter.
I love Stephenie’s witty writing style.
I thought the cover of “Breaking Dawn” was great in its symbolism of the story to come.
I have surmised that the red pawn in the background symbolizes Bella before she becomes a vampire, small, red-blooded, and a weak piece in “the game of life”, and the white queen chess piece in the foreground symbolizes Bella after she is changed…hopefully.
After she becomes a vampire, she will become regal, beautiful, powerful and even whiter than she is now…having no blood and all.
Although I think that the cover symbolizes what I hope the story is going to turn out like, I’m not quite sure if it matches with the others. I’m not quite sure why, but if I were to describe what I mean by this statement, I guess it stands out because of its having of more than one subject in the artwork, and that it obtains a solid ground…board…whatever you want to call it, while all of the others have an item, or items (apple in hands), floating in the obsidian space behind them.
So, all in all, I thought the cover was pretty good, and the first chapter just made me want even more–which makes it an excellent first chapter!
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:17 pmI wouldn’t say that I hate the new cover but I also wouldn’t say that I like it. Maybe it’s because after looking at the Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse covers, that I come to think that the Breaking Dawn cover doesn’t match as much as I thought and hoped it would. But from observing the cover, my opinion would be that the Queen is either Victoria or The Volturi, and the Pawn would be Bella and/or Edward. In another way the Queen could be Bella and the Pawn being Edward/Jacob, only because the Pawn is somewhat in the dark and the Queen is in the spot light. It could represent Bella’s big decision between Edward and Jacob, or how everything is now coming down to Bella to keep things in order.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:22 pmWhen I first saw this there was a lot of squealing and yelling in the middle of the store. I smacked my friend a few times in excitement. I love it. It’s a little more complex than the other covers and I’m interested to see how that ties in.
The chess idea could mean so many different things. Control, strategy, power.
Please consider this an entry to your contest.
on June 16th, 2008 at 11:25 pmI’m fairly sure the white one is a Queen, which is largely seen as the most powerful player, and the most important player in the game. The Pawn, of course, is more well known for paving the way, providing distractions, and making sacrifices. But I don’t see these as pieces working together, they’re clearly not on the same team. The pawn is encroaching on the queen, the pawn is sneaking up on the queen. I think the queen represents the supernatural–or, more specifically, vampirism. The pawn would be humanity. Vampires and humans have been on opposite sides of the table since they differentiated from each other. While, of the two, vampires are clearly the more powerful, humanity is not to be counted out. The supernatural should not be so arrogant as to count out the effect humans can have on them, particularly illustrated by the effect Bella has had not only on Edward but on the entire Cullen coven, and the Volturi, and so ultimately this one little human has had an international effect.
Strategy is obviously going to be huge in Breaking Dawn; trying to orchestrate anything with Bella in the middle of it has proven itself to be a bigger commitment than, say, with a person who doesn’t attract trouble. Bella’s humanity has recently come under the scrutiny of the Volturi, despite their relatively peaceful departure from the Olympic peninsula at the end of Eclipse. Strategy will be important to Bella in reconciling whatever feelings she has for Jacob, although clearly her feelings for Edward surpass that. Strategy will be hugely important especially when it comes to the time of her change because it will violate the treaty between the werewolves and the coven, and if Bella does not try to reconcile the two sides I would be seriously disappointed.
I like it.
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:04 amI love the cover of Breaking Dawn. I just love how all of the covers same the same color schemes to them. I also love the chess pieces like this story will be a little bit more complex than the others.
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:16 amomg!!! i think this is one of the best covers i have ever seen!!! i love it soooooo much!! i am still trying to figure out what it means though……..
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:27 amAt first, I was a little confused. But now I am ecstatic about it all! I definitely need to know the full meaning of it, but I get a little of it.
The white queen is Bella and the red pawn is Edward. That’s about all I got, and I will not understand it fully until I read the book. Obviously.
But! By reading the first chapter of it in the special edition my sister bought, I can tell that it is going to be the most INTENSE book so far. It will be packed with action and AMAZING things! I cannot wait. August 2nd couldn’t feel further away…
I am SO-O excited!!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:38 amThe cover is amazing. All of the covers in the Twilight Saga are incredible, but this one is perhaps the most eye-catching. Forgive my lack of knowledge on chess, but i think the front piece is a Queen and the red piece is a pawn. As to what they could possibly mean, I won’t know for sure until I read the novel… Another question unanswered until Aug. 2.
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:50 amHi again!!
I’ve read many opinions on how people take this cover. At first I thought it meant Edward is the King and Jacob the pawn in the back, but then someoen told me it’s a Queen…soo therefore I’ve come to the agreement with opinions I have read.
That the Queen is Bella as a vampire leaving her humanity behind. Of course I will not know for certain until the book is read. Can’t wait!!! August 2nd is coming up!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:55 amIts really different compared to the first three covers but I like it nonetheless. Its very mysterious and it really makes me nervous. I dont know why, of its because of the chessboard and chess pieces– that comes off as a face to face, head on battle between Bella and Edward, for me. It also kind of makes me sad for some reason. I do hope Breaking Dawn doesnt end tragically for our beloved characters ala Romeo and Juliet. I will be crushed.
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:32 amThat piece is the QUEEN BTW. My dad taught me how to play chess, using the pawns first, when I was about three or four. Then when I hit five he taught me how to play all the other pieces. In high school, if one of my boyfriends could play too, he would challenge them to a game. He would quickly kick their ass in under two minutes and absolutely humiliate them. Dad was on the chess team in high school and then later palyed with fellow M.I.T. classmates throughout college.
on June 17th, 2008 at 3:52 amI love the cover and am looking forward to it’s release in August.
I like this cover, it’s very intriguing, and I think the fact that it is a chess board will play a very significant role book in the.
on June 17th, 2008 at 4:02 amI must say the cover is alot different from the others. But it really has me thinking. I think some of the mean is stragety. Thats one of the key elements in chess. Oh and by the way this is entry number 3.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:31 amHmmmm Like many people have concluded from the Breaking Dawn cover:
I think that the white figure in the front is infact a King. If you look in the titled the “k” in “breaking” is longer then the other letters and almost points to the chess piece. There are two possibilites for this piece. It could either be Edward, or it could be a new vampire. As we all know Vampires are strong and pale. And what is powerful in chess? Well…the King…well, I think it is I’m not sure I don’t play chess. It seems logical
The red Pawn, in my mind, no doubt represents Bella. Weak and full of blood.
With that said, I think the book cover either show Bella following a vampire..or a vampire leaving Bella. Possibly Edward?
Someone else in the twilighter forums also pointed out that the “d” in “dawn” could be flipped down to make the word “pawn” changing the title to “Breaking Pawn”. The pawn is the smaller chess piece in the picture, is it not?
I don’t know…maybe I’m very confused. Forgive me, if I have messed up the names of the chess pieces, and/or what they look like. As I have stated before, I don’t play chess.. :]
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:06 amI like the cover. But you know, who cares about the cover really?
We just care about what’s between them, right? I read the first chapter the other day. So excited!!! I was telling my friend, it’s like a bunch of friends that you’ve missed, and they’re coming back for a visit. Can’t wait to see them again.
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:17 amI think the cover is quite interesting. Many possibilities. It gets me thinking…
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:08 amMe and my friend have been trying to figure it out and I think The white Queen in The front is Bella as a vampire and the red pawn is Bella as a human because I think Breaking Dawn will be all about Bella as a vampire and Edward being her husband if Jacob doesn’t ruin it for them.
I got the Eclipse Special Edition and On the Breaking Dawn poster that came with it there is a small paragraph from Breaking dawn. I read it and memorized. I began to think it is a riddle and I think I have solved it, but am I right about it being a riddle? I think the cover looks really cool!!!!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:16 amThis is my favorite bookcover yet! I think that it has a lot of hidden meanings. And I love the color sceme.
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:48 amI think that we are all upset that this will be the last book in the series. But none of us will be disappointed in which it turns out. We all know that Edward and Bella belong together. And I put my trust in Stepenie Meyer and believe that the ending to the series will be awesome!
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:59 amHonestly if i hadnt read the rest of the series and this was just some random book [i occasionally judge books by the cover] i’m not sure if i would read it. It looks kinda intersting but alittle blah…
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:16 amI was kind of slow on hopping onto the Twilight series bandwagon, but now I can’t wait for Breaking Dawn to come out. Getting to see the cover art makes it even harder to wait for the book to come out.
I do have to agree with some other people who posted, though. If I hadn’t read any of the series or anything, this book cover might not interest me.
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:01 amI love the cover, but to be honest, I’m kind of scared. It looks kind of mysterious, and a bit dark. As if something really bad and unexpected is going it happen. Or maybe I’m analyzing the cover to much. Haha, who knows?
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:47 amI like the cover!
I don’t really like first-chapter-sneak-peeks into books… I just get mad that I can’t read more!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:00 pmi like the cover aswell. it def. has some signs about bella’s humanity in it. i read the first chapter, nothing REALLY interesting happend, i cant wait until the august 2nd !
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:25 pmOMG I LUV THIS CONTEst! im a big big FAN Of STEPHENIE MEYER AND ALL HER BOOKS! THIS CONTEST IS GREAT PLEASE ENTER ME IN ! YOU GUYS/ GIRLS ROCK! AND GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:35 pmI think the cover art is powerful and crisp. I like something that grabs your attention like that. All of her covers are intense.
As for reading the first chapter I am not of a fan of that, seems to take something away from the whole thing. Just my humble opinion.
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:47 pmI don’t really know how i feel about the cover. >
on June 17th, 2008 at 12:57 pmPersonally, I love the cover. I find it ironic that my friend’s art project was chess pieces, mostly the pawn, and there it is on the front cover of Breaking Dawn. And like most people, the cover of Breaking Dawn is just another hit in the head making you realize that it’s finally here. It’s so pretty, I think it’s probably the best cover. But I still like the apple on Twilight’s cover and the flower on New Moon.
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:03 pmoh poo! my full comment didnt get submitted! i said a lot more. oh well….mainly i just wanted to say that i really want to know what the cover is supposed to mean and im interested to know what Stephenie Meyer thinks and if she likes it. Also that i wanted the first chapter to be posted online but since it wasnt i went to wal mart and read it there in the book aisle. I really liked the first chapter and it made me even more excited for the book to come out! ^__^ hee hee. and i met a twilight fan at wal mart reading the first chapter too!
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:04 pmhey ya. This is for the contest!!! I like the cover but It’s not like the other ones though but it’s still nice. I think the white piec e is suppused to be Edward and the FRed is Jacob. Because Edward is winning(that’s why the white i up frot) and Jaob is in the shadows
I don’t really like Edward as of the third book. I seriosly hope that last comment hasn’t affected my chances of winning!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:09 pmI’m sorry about my terrible typing skills. That was supposed to be red not Fred. I’m pathetic
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:11 pmI’m kinda confused about this cover. It’s not what I expected at all. I think it’s pretty, but not as much as the other ones. And the king could be Edward. Or Bella, if it’s a queen. Then it would mean that she’s a vampire now…because it’s white. Uh I don’t really know, there’s a meaning for all this, but I guess we won’t discover it until the book is released. And does the red pawn means like…sacrifice?
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:23 pmI like the cover. It is interesting. It makes you wanna open the book as soon as you get it and figure out what the cover means. Stephenie’s covers always have meaning. I wonder what this one means……..
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:30 pmi REALLY like the cover! i’m interested to see what this one means. maybe it means that bella finally has the gameboard in her favor due to the fact that she is supposed to be changed? who know?! i also really like how red is incorporated into all the covers- it’s a nice touch on a reoccuring theme
on June 17th, 2008 at 1:56 pmI’ll admit that it surprised me- it was just so different than the other covers!
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:30 pmBut I know that once I’ve read the book (and trust me, I’m dying to do so) it’s symbolism’ll make sense
once, again, here i am enteringggggg!
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:32 pmI love the cover for Breaking Dawn!!!!!!!!!!
3rd entry
Its looks amazing.:) I’m really interested in what/if it will mean.Maybe it’ll just be a nice pictue as in New Moon? I hope not. I think the white piece represents Bella as vampire. And the red…I’m not sure.:) Maybe something about blood?X_x
on June 17th, 2008 at 2:58 pmi read the first chapter. it didnt give anything away…the cover is my favorite of all of them. my first thought was that it shows Bells as the pale queen. she over shadows her human self. at least i hope so =)
on June 17th, 2008 at 3:31 pmIm really interested in what the cover means. Its a very different from the others.
on June 17th, 2008 at 4:44 pmI looked up something on the internet, trying to figure out what the cover means.
I read that the white queen in chess can also mean death. I certainly didn’t know that.
But it means death in a good way. Like…being reborn.
I love it.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:02 pm:]
!This is For the contest!
Cant wait for the book to come out!
Every Book she has written for the Twilight series has a cover interesting to it, maybe it because all of her books have a meaning to it?! But this is difficult to guess what it could be is the queen represents the Volturi and its power over the other Vampires, and the red pawn as Bella, I imagine this is because she is so vulnerable and weak.
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:06 pmlike all of the other covers i think this one will explain itself when the book is read. it makes me want to go rob a book delivery truck on Aug. 1st
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pmWe have an entire blog going over at our official MySpace about what the cover could possibly mean.
A lot of the theories are incredibly interesting.
A queen and a pawn… makes you think, doesn’t it? I personally feel it’s quite different from the “traditional” Twilight series covers but I like it.
The pawn is red which could mean Bella in her human form: weak and fragile, able to be manipulated easily.
The queen is white: strong and authoritative, white as in the stone-like surface of a vampire’s skin. Perhaps Bella in her vampire form?
This comment, like my others is for the Stephenie Meyer contest. Thanks for listening to what I have to say!
on June 17th, 2008 at 5:42 pmI think the the cover is AWSOME!!! Just like all her covers are AWSOME!! =)
I’m still trying to figure out what exacitly it is that means though….
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:15 pmRead the first chapter in the first day the special edition came out. I LOVED IT!!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:24 pmWell when I first saw the cover of Breaking Dawn I really couldn’t understand what it meant or stop screaming with excitement. Was the white piece Edward and the small red one Jacob? Or was it the other way around? Anyway I was impressed. I personally like it. It has a lot of details to it. Stephenie Meyer has really got us wondering.
I can’t wait until I get my hands on the fourth book of the series.
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pmI do like her covers cause they grab you. I have just started Twilight and while I read fast, I don’t need to read a excerpt yet.
on June 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pmMy opinion on the cover is that, like in a game of chess, once the weaker pawn makes it to the end of the board it can become any piece it wants, so Bella will reach the end of her human life and become a vampire… I hope.
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:09 pmI really like the cover! I think it’s bold and intrigueing. I think the Pawn is Bella’s human life (red because red signifies blood-she’s filled with blood and life) and it is getting overtaken by the queen, which is Bella’s vampire life (white signifying the paleness and cold of the vampires). Those are just my thoughts!
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:35 pmThe cover that you’ve chosen for Breaking Dawn is beautiful.I love all your book covers they all kinda say something about the book in away that i can’t quiet explain the apple, the flower, the ribbon, and now the pawns i love it thats all there is to say.
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:40 pmI like it but I can’t help but think it stands out too much from the covers of the other books. Its different but I still love it. Then again I wish they would have blended it in with the other covers a bit more–I just think it needs more red in it. I guess I’m just undecided.
on June 17th, 2008 at 7:46 pmThe cover is amazing I was so exicted when it came out.. but devasted that I am not able to read the first chapter! I am the girl who keeps her friends updated on this sorta stuff we all decided we would go to the release party at the local barns and noble as well as the Twilight movie!! soooo excited!!!!
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:32 pmI’m honestly not quite sure of what I think of the cover. I like it, but it’s not as…elegant as the other covers. I’m guessing that the pawn and king/queen [I'm not sure what it is, I forgot xD], represent Edward and Jacob in Bella’s life? But I’m not sure about that..maybe one represents her life, and the other her future?
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:35 pmIt’s definitely an interesting cover and poses a lot of question. But it’s intriguing and captures your attention. :]
And I don’t know if I mention this in here either, but I’m also entering for the contest
I love it! It must have something to do with Edward! He just is so intalectual much like chess! I can’t wait for the books I trully love this series!
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:38 pmI absolutely love this cover! But I have no idea what it means! I’m hopeless at chess; I had to ask my mom which pieces were on the cover. I didn’t think I was going to read the first chapter until August, because when I read the first chapter of Eclipse before it came out and I was (metaphorically) dying for the book. So I didn’t want to read the first chapter this time, to avoid my metaphorical death. But I went shopping with my mom and saw the Eclipse special addition. . . and pretty much pouted until she gave in and bought it for me. I read it in WalMart. People were looking at me because I was talking to it. But I love the first chapter. I was laughing out loud when they told Charlie. And I was shocked by Renee’s reaction too. I really thought she’d be mad at Bella. . . but whatever. I’m pumped.
on June 17th, 2008 at 8:56 pmI must say that at first I was a little surpised by the cover, it wasn’t at all what I thought it would be! I’m pretty good at chess but I still have no clue what it means, I’m thinking that the white Queen could repersent a Vampire and the Red Pawn a human, but I’m not sure so I guess I’ll just have to wait and see….
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:21 pmI thought the first chapter was great!!! But I was a surpised that Charlie or Rene didn’t thow a fit when they found out that Edward and Bella were getting married! Anyway, I’m really hyper right now thanks to that chapter, and I can’t wat till I can get my hands on the book!!!!!!
i love the cover, but i really am wondering what the red pawn means
on June 17th, 2008 at 9:34 pmI like the cover. I haven’t read ANY of the books yet, though, so I must remedy that.
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:04 pmI LOVE the cover, although I think it kinda won’t look right if you put all 4 books together, but I still love it. I can’t wait until Stephenie tells us what it really means ( I have quite a few theories but they’re probaby wrong My friends and I were even arguing abut it haha)Can’t wait for Breaking Dawn!!!:D
on June 17th, 2008 at 10:38 pmI actually really like the cover. I’ve seen a lot of negativity towards it, but I think it looks pretty cool. I can’t wait until August!
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:01 pmI think the cover is very attractive, but it’s also mysterious. No one can really know exactly what it means until they read the book! But it looks very symbolic. I read the first chapter of Breaking Dawn, and of course I thought it was great! But it was too early to show any meaning behind the cover. I’m so excited!
on June 17th, 2008 at 11:15 pmI have no idea whatsoever what the cover art might mean. It’s intriguing to find out! I can’t wait for the book but I’m certain that if I read the first chapter before the book comes out I’ll go insane wanting to know what happens… so I’m doomed to wait! August 2, right? :]
on June 18th, 2008 at 1:40 ami like the cover i was definatly (sorry cant spell that word or many other words lol)not expecting it at all but i think thats what makes it so good and its the last cover so i think thats why theres a little more going on in the picture but i like how it uses the good ol’ white red and black it wouldnt be twilight otherwise. i sort have some theories about what it means but im trying not to think about it too much so then il have a nice surprise when i read the book , one theory i have though is that the white one (sorry i dont play chess) represents bella maybe as a vampire and the red is what shes leaving behind like jacob and charlie ect or even if shes not a vampire all the things she is living without eg immortality ect i dont really think that the chess peices represent jacob and edward i think stephenie meyer might of done something a little less obvious but i could be wrong . i am soooooo excited i cant wait any longerrrr and i love the cover!!!!!!!!!!!!
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:38 amHmm… you know, I really don’t like this cover as much as the one for Twilight or Eclipse. It doesn’t really fit with the rest somehow. I think it may be too complicated to look at. And right now, the meaning behind it is completely ambiguous. It may be easier to understand after reading the book… yeah that usually works.
#3 on checklist = done.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:07 amI love the cover. I think it’s a little different from the theme of the rest of the covers, but since we all know that the white chess piece is a queen…I think we can all assume it’s Bella. I mean, who else could it be? OR MAYBE! It’s Stephenie, and she’s getting full of herself
JK!
But I think that the Queen piece is Bella, and the red pawn is actually her before the “change”.
Of course, I don’t know chess, so the moment the cover came out, I had to look up my assumption that the white piece was a queen lol.
(#3 on checklist is done
)
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:58 amahh. when i saw it i was so excited. i have read so many theories i honestly don’t know what to think. a lot of them make sense. i dont know if i can wait for aug. 2nd!! ahh. it seems so far away!!! but i did read the first chapter. might i just say. omg. wow. and that’s all i really can say for right now. haha. i liked your post about the other books to. it helped answer some questions. i didn’t know that ian wasn’t suppose to in the host. but i am sure glad that he was!!! sigh. i love ian. and edward. (just to make that clear because my friends think that i don’t love him anymore =[ but that’s not true!) btw. third post.
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:25 amI like this cover because not only do the stark graphics stand out, but as you alluded it makes you wonder who is represented by the chess piece. I’d love to find out by winning a set of her books to read. Please put me in the drawing.
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:26 amThanks.
I think the cover makes a bold statement. People may pick it up just to see what the book is about.
on June 18th, 2008 at 9:29 amI like the cover. Somewhat intriguing. There have been so many different theories. Although, the covers have never really been indicative to the plots of the novels. I think the publisher just chooses what they feel is dramatic looking and what they feel will drive us nuts speculating the meaning.
on June 18th, 2008 at 10:51 amI think that the pawn is Bella because there’s no way for that pawn to win without someone ele stepping in. also because it’s red and newborns eyes are red (right?). the queen might be Alec because SM said something about his power shown in battle.
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:19 amI read the first chapter as soon as I could. Seeing as how I was way to poor to go out and by the book, I sat in Barnes and Nobles for ten minutes, looking at the cover and absorbing the first chapter. I loved it, and I think it’s a great start to Breaking Dawn!
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:50 amAs to the cover…I’m not sure its meaning. Maybe the queen is Edward, and the pawn is Jacob, because that’s how they’ve become to Bella. I don’t know, its just a thought.
I really like the cover but i’m not sure yet what it means? I really like this cover because I think it makes the reader think about the book more because like why would there be two chess peices on the book and I just think that the reader has to think more! I know it made me think.
on June 18th, 2008 at 12:39 pmIt wouldn’t be my first choice when I went to the book store. I am somewhat disapointed because meyer’s previous covers have been so interesting.
on June 18th, 2008 at 1:32 pmOh, my goodness! I was completely freaking out when I first saw the cover. I’ve been trying to figure out what it means, though, but I’ve thought about it a little. I think that the pawn might be Jacob and the queen might be Edward? Because Edward is a bigger part of Bella’s life than Jacob? …Oh, I really don’t know, but I’m really excited to find out!
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:13 pmI actually love seeing this cover. I have no idea what is really means but I think one of them is Bella don’t know which one.
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:24 pmI really am undecided about the cover. Though, I do remember first picking up Twilight and thinking, “Who would put an apple on the cover of a book?” And now that I have read it, I don’t think that there could have been a better cover than the forbidden fruit, so perhaps after reading Breaking Dawn, I will have a different view. As for the first chapter I told myself I wouldn’t spoil anything until the book came out, but of course I couldn’t control myself and went to the nearest book store as soon as I could and read the chapter.
I don’t want to put out any spoilers, but lets just say its amazing!
on June 18th, 2008 at 3:26 pmI like the cover but I’m really unsure of what it means…I can’t wait for August 2nd!!! It too far away!!
on June 18th, 2008 at 4:24 pmthe first time i saw this cover i didnt really like it,
on June 18th, 2008 at 4:42 pmi thought it didnt really connect to the rest of the covers in the series.
but it did grow on me,
i do like the cover now,
and im interested to see what it means,
i think the pawn is bella when she is human and that the queen is bella when she turns into a vampire.
Such exquisite art work!
I was surprised that this theme was chosen, though. It doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the covers. Maybe it’s just me. Oh, well.
I love the amount of thought that everyone is putting into the meaning of the chess pieces.
I have read the first chapter, and yes, it is now a constant nagging in the back of my mind, “What hapens next? What happens next? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!” I almost can’t stand the tension! Although, (and I don’t mean to spoil it for anyone that hasn’t yet read it) the part about the car being missile proof is pretty funny (and necessary).
on June 18th, 2008 at 5:04 pmThe Breaking Dawn cover…
It has to be my second favorite cover, my favorite being Twilight because I so atuned to it.
I think white has always been humans and red mythical creatures. ;]
On Twilight the forbidden fruit was Edward and the apple was red. On New Moon, there is a falling red leaf, the was the Cullen leaving. On Eclipse, the ribbon is split in half, the larger for Edwaud, the smaller but still there part, is for Jacob. Those are my theories anyway.
This is my theory for the Breaking Dawn cover: The white chess piece is upfront with a red piece lurking in the back. I think the white piece in the front is because a large section of the book is about Bella saying goodbye to human ties for her upcoming transformation which is the red lurking in the future.
on June 18th, 2008 at 5:30 pmOf corse this is just my thought but I think it makes alittle bit of sense. ;]
WOO! I love this cover. I don’t know why a few fans wouldn’t like it. It’s different, sure, but you gotta be open minded! It’s unique. Not exactly sure what it means. I think I read somewhere else an explanantion as to what it could mean. But I forgot about it, as I do not play Chess. It’s too smart for me, lol. Maybe it’s showing how Edward is more important to Bella than Jacob is. But that’s Eclipse stuff, so nevermind. I suck at this. I hope I’m being put down for the giveaway, as I am following all of the steps on your list. Thanks.
on June 18th, 2008 at 6:28 pmThe cover is something I never would have expected, which is why I love it! If the chess pieces are based off characters we already knew then I wonder if it stands for Edward and Jacob or if Meyer has even written Jacob a major part in the book.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:22 pmI think both the pawn and the queen are Bella. The pawn represents Bella when she is a human. The pawn is weak and red which is a symbol for blood I think. The queen represents Bella after her transformation where she is a vampire and strong and cold.
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:36 pmThe pawn is Bella before her change, and the queen is her as a vampire. Blood to pale stone? weak to strong. I love the cover. It’s probably my favorite so far!
on June 18th, 2008 at 7:53 pmI LOVE the cover!!! I loved how they kept the same style, the red and the black and the white! =] I bet there is a significance to the cover, and everyone has their theory about it, and I think the cover could mean, that the red pawn would be Bella still as human and the queen would be Bella as a vampire. Hoepfully she turns into a vampire! i would be ecstatic!!!

on June 18th, 2008 at 8:58 pmBut who ever is right! we’ll find out.

I like the cover – its just so aesthetically appealing (similar to all of Stephenie Meyer’s work). I like how it’s zooming in on a small part of the chess board. I hope that there isn’t just one answer to what it is representing — I want there to be depth in the novel so that it can apply to several situations.
on June 18th, 2008 at 11:13 pmI,too love the cover! I also like all of the different takes on the book! I still have to catch up with the others so that when I read this one, I understand!
on June 19th, 2008 at 5:18 amAnother entery please
I love the cover art…I have been spending some time staring at it lately and trying to figure out some meanings behind it…I have come up with a few. I am glad she did something so bold and different from the 1st 3, it definitely provokes some heavy thought and makes it even harder for me to wait for the release party!
on June 19th, 2008 at 7:39 amGiven the opportunity, I would most certainly read the first chapter!
When I stop to actually think about it, I haven’t really had any opinions about any of the books’ cover art.
I suppose “Twilight”’s was simply appropriate, as the apple is a symbol of temptation to “sin” or in the story’s case, “danger”.
I never quite understood both “New Moon”’s and “Eclipse”’s cover art — not indicative of the lack of thought put into them, but just of my inability to have a little more insight into things.
on June 19th, 2008 at 2:41 pmI suppose the case is the same with this cover art, since I just don’t get it. I do, however, agree that it is bold. I know nothing of chess, but if the cover art reveals anything about the move made, I certainly think it signifies something to happen in the book; a foreshadow of sorts I guess.
I really loved the cover! I’m curious as to what it means and I’m super excited for Breaking Dawn to come out. I can’t wait! I haven’t read the first chapter yet I think I’m going to wait for August 2nd. I can’t wait to find out what happens!!
on June 19th, 2008 at 2:43 pmI feel that the cover is totally Rockin awesome. I was looking at the cover and it totally confused so i cant wait for the book to come out so i can figure out what it means cause in “Twilight”, “New Moon”, and “Eclipse”
on June 19th, 2008 at 3:23 pmI liked the consecpt of them i think the main characters were very true and how you right is helpful to understand what is going on. i cant wait till Breaking DAwn Comes out because im sure it is another great novel in a teriffic sieries. Also the host is totally freakin awesome. THe way you wrote and told the story sent shivers up my spine. I love the way it ended!!!!!!!!!!! So on August 2nd, 2008 im going to Barnes and noble to wait all night to get Breaking Dawn And i don’t care how long i have to wait!!!
So, I stood int the middle of my Borders (again) and just stared at the new cover. I mean, I literally just stared at it, for like, 10 straight minutes. I got some really weird looks that day.
Then I read the first chapter. OMG! Talk about AMAZING! I read it! And I’ve regreted it ever since. It’s driving me absolutle BONKERS! I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!! I reeeaaalllyyy want to know!!
on June 19th, 2008 at 3:59 pmI’m really intrigued by the cover of this book. I’ve read all of the comments here and now I’m thinking several ways I wasn’t before!! So I won’t even try to guess what the symbolism is behind this.
I LOVE how they use bold imagery – I think this is my favorite cover of hers so far.
on June 19th, 2008 at 5:02 pmI’m puzzled as to what the cover could mean! Yeah, there’s a queen and a pawn, but who do they represent?! It’s driving me insane!!! Midnight parties galore— I’m going with, like, 10 people!
on June 19th, 2008 at 9:37 pmI absolutely love the cover! I think that the red piece is Jacob, sort of like the heat of being a werewolf is symbolised by the red. And the queen piece is Bella after turning into a Vampire. She has him cornered but what will she do? – Hmm, maybe, just a thought.
on June 20th, 2008 at 10:47 amAlso, I’d love to join the giveaway, I love reading and especially if it’s about vampires and things like that =D
Ha ha. I was hoping to read it online as well. So instead I stood in front of the Special Edition display in Costco and read it while my kids screamed at me to hurry up.
on June 20th, 2008 at 10:55 amI absolutely love the cover. It is my favorite, other than the Twilight one. I think bit is bolder and deeper than the others are. I also love the color scheme of it with the grey marble and the white and red chess pieces. It makes the book seem very mysterious. I am so excited!!!
on June 20th, 2008 at 11:23 amI think the cover is great. Looks very interesting and mysterious.
on June 20th, 2008 at 11:38 amI really like this cover. it isn’t my favorite, but it is still really cool looking!!
on June 20th, 2008 at 1:15 pmim in love with it i cant wait to actually read breaking dawn but i really wish i understood why she picked that as a cover oh well i will just have to wait like everyone else!
on June 20th, 2008 at 1:44 pmThe cover is growing on me. I didn’t like the first time I saw it. It doesn’t have the stark sexiness of the first three, but I’m intrigued to see who the chess pieces symbolize.
on June 20th, 2008 at 3:03 pmAll I can say is wow. When you consider the character of Edward it suddenly has so much symbolism. I have a feeling I’ll be thinking about this cover for awhile…
Thanks for posting it!
on June 20th, 2008 at 6:18 pmWhat a striking cover, I love it!
on June 20th, 2008 at 7:36 pmI like the cover because it does make you think of the pawn. I want to read the first chapter now… but I think if did I would go crazy until the book came out. I’m Already dieing to read it, why torture myself?
~Audrina
on June 20th, 2008 at 7:48 pmthis cover is very…hard to understand…it poses as a thought producer for many people…it really is strange and i can’t wait to find out what it means
on June 20th, 2008 at 11:45 pmI have to say, the cover does make you think. I really don’t get the concept of it, why did it have to be chess pieaces? Does it mean that Bella is the white queen, and there are other vampires after her. That means they can be the red pawn. A different color for a different team, meaning enemy…hahaha So I’m guessing that the Cullens have taken Bella in and their life is like chess, they have to make the right moves or else they get cought by the enemy. This is really a mind-boggling image to make concept of. Besides all that, I can’t totally wait to read what you have instored for us!
on June 21st, 2008 at 12:14 amWell this is an amazing cover, but i really feel like it dosen’t really fit with all the other covers. This cover is too busy, but i still love it. My thoughts are that the red pawn is Bella’s human life and the Queen is Bella’s vampire life. I know that this is the end to the Twilight love saga and Bella and Edward have to end up together, but, since I’m a Jacob fan, I still wish that Jacob and Bella could end up together, but I’ll read what ever you have for us!
on June 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pmI think it’s a rather striking cover. I’m one of those people who DOES judge a book by its cover, and that one would make me buy it.
That, and it is the final book in the series.
I haven’t even read New Moon, and can’t until I suffer through a self-imposed GRE practice test… though all this talk of another romance is killing me.
on June 21st, 2008 at 3:33 pmGosh I never even thought that the covers had much meaning until now. I will totally look at them differently now. Thanks for your blog, it rocks!
on June 21st, 2008 at 10:54 pmi can not wait to read breaking dawn!!!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 11:45 ami wa sknd of upset when eclipse ended!!
But now im excited!!!
breaking dawn sounds pretty interesting
on June 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 amBreaking Dawn’s cover would have to be my second most favorite of the Twilight series after Twilight of course. The cover is very striking and almost in your face, presenting itself boldly. What’s the most unusual thing about the cover are the chess pieces because in the game of chess, the pawn can turn into a queen. I think that’s a major symbol but am not quite sure on who or what the queen and pawn stands for. Maybe after reading the Breaking Dawn, it becomes clearer.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 1:02 pmI think that breaking dawn cover is my favorite! the picture has bright bold colors so it kinda pops out! I think its interesting because it makes you think. Ok, who’s the queen(bella) and etc.! I love it!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 2:59 pmDefinitely another striking cover…
I think saying the queen is Bella is a pretty safe bet. I would guess by the red of the pawn that it symbolizes Edward. If that is the case, then it is also significant that there is a pretty clear path for him to get to her.
[contest entry]
on June 22nd, 2008 at 4:41 pmbeautiful cover….i luv the artwork on it! the colors are so deep, so passionate, so bold, i wonder if they have any deeper meanings………… i also wonder if the whole cover, over all, has any deeper meanings. oh well, i guess we’ll find out soon enough! :p
spoiled it for myself, & i wish i didn’t… :’(
although, i must say i would’ve PERSONALLY not picked the cover for this book, because it doesn’t follow the traditional “twilight saga” cover/art work, but i guess it’s ok….but i luv it as a piece of art itself. too late to wait for the book to read the first chapter though!!
oh well…
thnx for the post (as always)!!
urs truly!!
p.s. please count this as one of my entries for the contest!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 6:33 pmI hope this cover is as meaningful as the cover for Twilight!! It certainly looks that way!! Maybe the story is like a chess game–lots of players, sacrifices for overall victory, lots of tricks, traps, and plenty of plotting and thinking.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 7:31 pmIt’s a very striking cover, but I really like it!
I wouldn’t pick up this book if there wasn’t so much hype behind Stephanie Meyer. But I’m really big on a good cover, and I don’t think this is one of them.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 9:44 pmI don’t really like it, but just because my OCD wants it to match the other two in color sceme, with only red centerpieces. Also, I don’t get chess, so I can’t figure out what it means. I’ll probably like it more once I read the book and understand it.
on June 22nd, 2008 at 9:51 pmCould you please enter me into the contest?
The cover looks sooo cool, but it doesnt match the title but i bet it will still be an awsome book!!
on June 22nd, 2008 at 10:14 pmI think chess analogies are a little overdone and not very original but the graphic design is done well. The red really pops.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 amI think of all of them, this is the classiest cover.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 7:02 amI am even more interested in this book after seeing the cover. The bold contrast of red with black and white. The idea of the pawn being front and center, the game of chess is so intense and I am wondering if this book will be too.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 8:09 amI think the cover is okay. I liked the others WAY better. But it interesting to try to figure out what it means.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 1:45 pmI got the special edition before I saw the cover for the first time. I must admit, its a hard cover to decifer. There could be many explinations on what it could mean. I don’t want to get into them because that would be a whole bunch of writing on my part. But anyways, I love the cover, and I cannot wait til the book comes out! First chapter rules! You much read it!
on June 23rd, 2008 at 3:20 pmwow nice cover it is a little better than the others it is cool cuz it is like a mental battle and like just trying to corner the others accept instead of just coming from the front you got attacks coming from all around
on June 23rd, 2008 at 5:06 pmI haven’t read the books yet, but I get a very Alice in Wonderful feeling from the book cover. Can’t wait to read them.
on June 23rd, 2008 at 6:49 pmI’m going to wait, if I read the first chapter, I’ll only want more.
on June 24th, 2008 at 3:58 amI love the cover and this is what I think it means. The white queen pawn probably represents Bella after her transformation. It white and stands strong in front whereas the red small pawn stands at the back. The red pawn could represent Bella when she was human. Weak and filled with blood. As all alive humans are. And the white queen represents her as a vampire. But this only leaves the question of who’s gonna be her king? I mean obviously it’s going to be Edward. Yay! but we can just wait and see.
on June 24th, 2008 at 1:00 pmI think the cover art is really cool. Those colors are suppose to be the most mentally stimulating color scheme.
on June 24th, 2008 at 9:50 pmThe cover art is interesting, but I’m not entirely sure that it has much to do with the novel – I mean, I still don’t understand the cover art for New Moon and Eclipse. Sure, chess pieces imply that there is a mental game going on, and lots of strategizing, etc. etc., but I like a book’s cover art to really indicate something about the book, not just “hey, that looks neat!”, which is what the rest of the series seems to be doing.
on June 24th, 2008 at 11:08 pmI think that cover is OK. It’s probably not a book I’d pick up and buy just for the cover, but it’s not a turnoff, either.
I think it’s well designed, as far as that goes, but if it doesn’t explain/elaborate on/draw you into the story, then what’s the point?
on June 25th, 2008 at 7:27 amI love the cover for Breaking Dawn! From an artistic point of view, it’s bold and powerful. I adore the composition and the colors too. I’ve loved every cover from the series, but this might be my favorite. How it ties in with the plot, I’m not quite sure. That particular area is tricky to infer about seeing as the significance of the other covers was not that apparent.
on June 25th, 2008 at 2:52 pmI like the cover. As far as the book goes. I’m just ready to have the WHOLE book here!
on June 25th, 2008 at 4:58 pmI don’t really like the cover. I get it symbolises some things in the book, but I just don’t like it. I’ve read some speculation on amazon’s forums about the cover and the meaning & I have to say, it could be anything. I’ve read some good theories and now I don’t know what to think!
New Moon’s Cover doesn’t have a point. The design picked it out because it looked “pretty”. (Previous poster was wondering)
on June 25th, 2008 at 5:45 pmi have a theory about the cover,
for the twilight cover, it’s like vampire hands holding an apple, which is red
which kind of shows edward, since he’s the most important part, so he’s red
and in new moon, edwards only there at the beginning and end, and jacobs in the whole thing,
so the flower’s white(jacob) and the edges are red(edward)
and then in eclipse, during the whole book, jacob is trying to get bella and then in the end, he finally snaps
where, on the cover, the red ribbon is breaking
and then on breaking dawn, the red piece in the back, and the white piece is in the front,
meaning, jacob wins
but it can also be switched around, for the vampire hands being edward, which is white,
and jacob being the apple, being held in edwards grasp, because he kind of controls it all in twilight
and then new moon is just switched around,
and in eclipse, edward beat jacob, and becomes free and snaps from joy..?
im not sure, eclipse doesn’t really work in that theory
but, it’s definitely freaking me out,
since for the back cover, it says
“Because when the dawn breaks an angel will fall.”
and in twilight, bella described edward as an angel
im not sure, but that’s just my theory
it’s a cool cover, just not my favourite
and, im not going to read the first chapter until after the middle of july
on June 25th, 2008 at 8:28 pmbecause i know i’ll go crazy if i read it now
I LOVE the cover.
Even though it reminds me of Harry Potter.
My guess is,
The red one is Bella,
Meaning “new born alert”
And the white is Edward.
Just a guess.
on June 26th, 2008 at 10:09 ami like the cover. there does seem to be a significance to it and i can’t wait to figure out what it is. there also seems to be a significance to the color red. i think maybe it is because blood is red and vampires need blood. which means maybe bella does choose vampire over werewolf. i am not going to read the first chapter. i am already dying to read breaking dawn and reading the first chapter will just make it worse.
on June 26th, 2008 at 10:52 amThe cover is interesting to me. I feel like the pawn and queen are both Bella, but in different parts of her…’Life’ I guess. I don’t know, I don’t like this one as much as the others. The others are more simple, this one seems to be more complex with a more complex meaning, but at least it gets you thinking to what it could mean.
on June 27th, 2008 at 7:25 amI think the cover is really eye catching and interesting. I have to say though that it reminds me, in some way, of Alice in Wonderland. LOL Definitely another book I want to check out, but I don’t like to read excerpts. Book previews I’m all over, but excerpts are too much a tease for my taste.
Thanks for including me in your Stephanie Meyer giveaway draw.
on June 27th, 2008 at 12:35 pmThe cover is somehow different altogether than the other ones but I can’t put my finger on why. Still, I like it. If Bella becomes a vampire (she better), than I think the queen represents her and the red piece in the back represents the vampire inside her that she is trying to control (the queen eventually takes control).
on June 28th, 2008 at 9:16 amWill you just wait until August or do you want to read the first chapter now? Do you like the cover? Do you hate it?
NO WAY! I went over to a small town book store soon after the release of the Eclipse Special Edition and read it right there at the spot. I love the cover. It’s nothing I would expect. Love that they kept the color sceme. I can’t wait to find out what it all could mean.
Thanks for the review and the awesome giveaway!!
on June 28th, 2008 at 6:52 pmMy teenage daughter has already read me the chapter of course. Love the cover….it goes right along with the others and keeps you guessing about the tie-in with the title. Thanks for including me in the giveaway! Very happy to have found your site.
on June 28th, 2008 at 10:36 pmHehe, hopefully this cover actually has a meaning unlike New Moon. I always thought that the writer could pick out the cover illustration…am I wrong?
When I went to Barnes & Noble the other day, I spotted the sticker on an Eclipse: Special Edition cover and read that one chapter of Breaking Dawn then read the rest of Twilight. I forgot all about going to the manga section…haha.
on June 29th, 2008 at 12:45 amThe cover looks great. And thanks for the links.
My personal theory is that the queen represents Bella as a vampire, and the pawn represents her as a human. She changes from a pawn (human) to a queen (vampire). Queens are vital players, therefore suggesting Bella will play a big role.
The chess game implies finale, a showdown, between Cullens and Volturi.
on June 29th, 2008 at 5:05 amI always view the Eclipse cover as the two parts of Bella breaking apart. I think that the smaller bit of the ribbon is Jacob’s Bella and the longer part is Edward’s Bella. Therefore i think that the Breaking Dawn cover is also the two forms of Bella. The white queen is Edward’s Bella after being turned vampire and the red pawn is Jacob’s Bella before being turned.
I love the cover, needless to say.
on June 29th, 2008 at 11:37 amTo be honest, I didn’t – and still don’t – know what to think about the cover. I like it, but I’m not entirely what I call “fan-fazed” over it either. I do think it fits well, but I was expecting something else.
But! Overall, I do like it none the less. ^_~
on June 29th, 2008 at 12:28 pmI really like it. the colors are nice and bold and stick with the black, white, and red theme of the other books.
and who is who really is a good question. I also can’t wait to read the first chapter of breaking dawn (I’ve only heard about it from friends who have their own copy) *sigh*
apparently the new eclipse comes with team edward and team jacob logos…. I usually want Jacob to win… but edward always seems to creep back in there too!
I can’t wait for the new book to come out and I’m glad you shared that cover art with us!!
on June 29th, 2008 at 4:05 pmI like the cover , bold and eye catching. I would think there is a power play going on ,good verses bad. I am new to reading Stephenie Meyers so I guess I will have to wait and read
on June 29th, 2008 at 9:01 pmI love it…I was so happy when I finally saw it.
on June 29th, 2008 at 9:17 pmvery mysterious cover! I like how we’re not sure what’s going to happen, quite like the actual book.. will it be edward or Jacob?
I also love the stark black, white, and red like all the other book covers. very dynamic, bold, and artistic. I’m not sure if it’s a king or a queen either, but I’m sure that when we read the book it’ll become clear.
on June 29th, 2008 at 9:31 pmI haven’t read any of the Twilight series, but this cover really makes me want to rush out and read them. It’s a simple cover that says a lot.
on June 30th, 2008 at 11:24 amI think Bella is the pawn…i’m not sure who the queen is yet…i read the first chapter and can’t wait another month! i like the cover too…..
on June 30th, 2008 at 11:35 amI love the cover. It’s very unique. I am very interested to find out what exactly it means. i do in fact have an oppinion. but it is way to big and hard to understand so i;m not going to type it. but i do think that bella is the pawn. and the pawn represents starting over.
on June 30th, 2008 at 1:30 pmWhen I first saw the Breaking Dawn cover I thought “Is this really the cover?” But after a few minutes later I thought it’s not that bad, it’s mysterious and cool! I think the red pawn might symbolize danger or villains like the Volturi that’s coming for Bella and the Cullens. The queen might be a stronger and vampire Bella. I read the first chapter and thought it was great and left me (like many twilight fans) wanting more:)
on June 30th, 2008 at 2:54 pmThe cover is definately different from the other’s, which intrigues me more. I don’t know much about chess, and it really doesn’t interest me, so I don’t have much insight as to what the cover means. Reading the first chapter was a BLAST. I was most surprised about Renee’s reaction to Bella’s engagement, and yet, it was completely believable. I think its fabulous as well that Edward got Bella a new car.
on June 30th, 2008 at 3:42 pmwow im so beyond excited about Breaking Dawn!!

on June 30th, 2008 at 3:52 pmanything about it makes me want to scream and the cover is awesome! im still in deciding on what it means though… the colors throw me off! stepehenie meyer is a GREAT writer and i know what ever she wrote will be amazing! i just cant wait!
thanks for the giveaway! its awesome!
The Breaking Dawn Cover caught me by surprised but it still intrigued me. The first thought to come to my head was Jaspers story. When he was explaining his history to Bella he mentions something about us humans being pawns and I couldn’t help but feel that theres a reason that Stephenie Meyer made that comparison. If I’m not wrong that is what he compared us to because I also remember Jasper mentioning us being red dots on a map.
on June 30th, 2008 at 3:53 pmBut as for my other thoughts on the cover I think it is great. I know there is a significance behind the picture. I just can’t pick it out. I guess I’ll just have to wait.
As for the question of who the queen is and who the king is. I say the queen is Bella and the King is either Jacob or Edward whoever Bella chooses. The pawns are just obstacles in their way.
I prefer to wait until August to read the book. I’m still reading the New Moon and Eclipse. I love the cover even though I don’t know what it actually means yet.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:03 pmWhen I first saw it, I was disappointed that it didn’t have the dominant RED that the other covers seemed to have….but I was also immediately intrigued about the serious symbolism that’s involved in this one–it’s obvious, but completely mysterious at the same time. Obvious because you can tell that it’s meant to represent someone, but mysterious because….you don’t know who. o.O!
Consider this an entry, please!
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:06 pmI’ve read the first chapter already, and it drove me crazy. I really want to read the rest of the book!!! I like the cover, but it’s a little more complicated then the others. It’s different because it pulls the element of white in with the red and black. It’s interesting. It will be fun to see how it ties in with the story.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:09 pmi cant wait for BD. and he cover wow it looks great but im trying to understand it. and then the first chapter was amazing. i just wish aug 2 would hurry up and get here.
this is an entry and so are all my other posts.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:11 pmI couldn’t read just the first chapter now, I’d be dying if I had to wait to read the rest of it.
Without knowing the significance of the cover I can’t really comment on it. I don’t like it as well as I like the others, but that may change when I read the book and see what it means.
on June 30th, 2008 at 4:52 pmI don’t think the cover is as striking as the other covers. The other covers, especially Eclipse was much more stark and powerful. I think there is too much going on the cover, it seems like its trying to say something instead of look awesome.
I finally broke down and read the chapter. I’m so disappointed in my self control. One good note, I didn’t feel the hate that I usual do for Bella…that’s a good sign!
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:07 pmI love the cover it looks awesome. I love all the covers of the books I think they are so unique and cool like art. I couldn’t wait at all to read the first capter I bought the Special Edition (even though I already had the 3rd book) cause I thought it was cool that you got the cover art (that looks more like a poster) and the first chapter and also they gave you a iron on with it to make your own t-shirt. very cool!
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:13 pmMe and my friends think that it has to do with bella being a “pawn” in all books (red because she blushes, she is human) and she turns into a “queen”, aka a vampire who is powerful and can do whatever she wants (and she is pale).
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:31 pmI think the red pawn is Bella as a human. The pawn is the weakest piece, and the red represents her blood. The white, which is the dominant represents Bella as a vampire. She will be incredibly strong and powerful.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:39 pmOh my, I am so excited
well, it’s a beautiful cover, I suppose. All of the covers are so….dramatic with the color. I know, I know, usually it’s mostly just black, white and red, but still, they offset all the colors dramatically. and the fact that it’s a chessboard is an indication of how strategic they’re gonna have to be, I suppose?
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:42 pmI am so excited for breaking dawn!! i literally cant wait! and as for the cover i think it is very pretty although i would love to know what the cover means!
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:43 pmI really like the cover, it’s well very different. i think that this might indicate that maybe this book will be a little different. couldn’t tell you in what way and maybe I’m way off but hey everyones in titled to their opinions. I think (hope) that maybe the pawn represents Bella now before the change, weaker physically, but red because of the still flowing blood. Then that leaves the white queen who is stronger and white like a vampire. The white queen is overshadowing the red pawn (hopefully) representing Bella’s change.
on June 30th, 2008 at 5:46 pmThis cover was somewhat a curveball for me, however it was a pleasant one, like the one you get from the guy you’ve had a crush on since the seventh grade. In the end, you still have that heart-wretching crush! Besides the obvious of the chess pieces, I found it refreshing that there was still the usual “red” concept depicting from the previous novels. The queen, I hope, is Bella, seeing as it has a very majestic, powerful, yet somewhat breakable demeanor. I loved the review for the cover–it was straightforward and enjoyable to read! Fabulous!
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:07 pmI remember when I first saw this cover I was so shocked. I thought it was so busy compared to the simplicity of the other three covers and I just didn’t know what to think about it. After a while I really started to love it. I think once BD is out we will know what the cover means because everyone has different thoughts on it now but we’re not 100% sure. I used to think the BD cover was very busy looking but now when I look at it I just think it’s very bold. It’s the last book and therefore I think the cover should have the most meaning and stand out the most. I like that the BD cover still has a very “Twilight feel”, it’s very elegant like the other three. I read somewhere that Stephenie Meyer had a big part in designing the cover and I trust her completely so I love the cover!!!
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:12 pmI ran out to the bookstore and bought Eclipse Special Edition right away I had to read the chapter now! I couldn’t wait till 8-2 thats just to far away!haha I love the cover art I think it’s bold and it intrigues me. I love how it keeps the red and white color schem, that just seems to tie it nicely into the rest of the series. I believe it is the most mysterious cover art out of all the series.
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:14 pmI love the cover! So cool
I don’t know much about chess, but maybe Bella’s the pawn. Or if the chess piece is the king, then I definitely think that she’s the king. Because, if I’m correct, isn’t part of the object of chess to protect the king? And Bella is always being protected by Edward
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:19 pmAnd I think that the cover hints at a very exciting plot. :O Yay!
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:20 pmI think the cover is interesting..however, it’s not as enigmatic and drawing as the previous covers. I mean, with chess, you obviously know that there’s conniving, strategy, manipulation, all that. But who knows what a book is about just by seeing an apple in two white hands? This cover fails to draw me in completely.
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:21 pmI like the cover, but…that’s about it. It’s one of those covers where I go, eh, that’s nice, NEXT. It doesn’t make me gasp, doesn’t make my heart race, doesn’t make me have seizures if the book isn’t in my hands NOW. It also doesn’t fit with the title. The best cover in this series is the one for Twilight.
on June 30th, 2008 at 6:31 pmThe moment I saw the cover, I tried to figure out the hidden meaning behind what the book represents. I think that the read is the blood and blush of the human bella and that the white is the pale white vampire bella. She is turning from a pawn to a queen; turning from weak to strong.
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:03 pmI presonally love this book cover!!! The second I saw it I knew it was Stephanie Meyers book! It will look FANTASTIC sitting on my shelf next to Twilight
AWESOME! I actually think that the white one is Bella possibly
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:12 pmI think the pawn represents Bella while she’s a human -a human with blood- hence the red pawn. And the Queen is Bella as a vampire; stronger, more powerful, and essentially more like a Queen. I don’t know if that’s right at all, just a guess! I like to cover, it is a little bold, and it’s a bit different from the first 3, but it’s not too bad.
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:18 pmAmazingly fantastic just like everything written/produced by Stephenie Meyer
on June 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pmAs a graphic designer.. I’m not impress buy the cover book. Compared to the other covers, it is the my least favorite one. But hey, who cares, the most important is the story that is inside
on June 30th, 2008 at 8:03 pmI really like this book cover- it could be my favorite in the series. I’m going to guess Bella’s the queen, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I like how much debate the cover has started, and I hope the meaning is relavent to the book itself.
on June 30th, 2008 at 8:04 pmWow. I have a lot to say about the first chapter and the cover art for Breaking Dawn.
First off, I think that it is definately Jake in the preface. For there is no other option. I love Jacob’s character, but I think that he is the only person who could be capable of hurting her. Even though it may not be intentional. I think that Edward would never put a fowl finger on Bella and the only others that she cares about that much are Renee and Charlie, who, also, would never have a reason to hurt her. Jacob, however does.
I thin kthat the first chapter had too much smashed into too little space. Bella usually doesn’t think that way. She jumped from one thing to the next with no end. But I loved it. I adored it, really. I’ve reread it four times.
The cover art, I think could either be Jake nailing down Bella, once she is turned Vampire, or Edward, ready to bite Bella. Or, maybe fate catching up with Bella. It seems like there a lots of explainations.
on June 30th, 2008 at 8:26 pmI don’t normally think too hard about cover art but here goes…
I’m thinking, like most others, that the White Queen is Bella… perhaps she’ll be some uber-vampire and end up the Queen of Vampires! The chess board itself indicates at least one massive upcoming battle (but who is in the best position for checkmate? The Queen or the pawn…? I think the Queen!). The red pawn itself would then be the Cullens’ foes… be it the werewolves (unlikely), another group of vampires (possible) or the Volturi (most likely)…
Then again the red pawn could indicate that some innocent people will need to be sacrificed as pawns (red=blood=life=humans) to ensure their success.
Or maybe it’s as simple as White Queen=Bella, the Vampire, the chess board indicates a battle and the red pawn is just there signifying the opponent… without any of the in-depth analyzing, assigning names and specific meanings to each component of the cover…
Maybe this is why I don’t normally delve too deeply into cover art! LOL!
on June 30th, 2008 at 8:55 pmI have read the first chapter and seen the cover. Now I’m even more excited then before. But I’m curious to what the cover means. And what Bella’s ‘after’ car will look like.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:07 pmThe cover is incredibly eye-catching. The white piece is a queen. Does anyone else notice the completely weird k in the word breaking? And if you take it from that letter, it spells king… breaKING Dawn? The pawn is the weakest piece on the board, which I think represent Bella as a human. But in chess, when a pawn gets all the way to the other side of the board, it can upgrade to a queen. So I think the queen represents Bella as a vampire, and a very powerful one at that. After all, the queen is THE most powerful piece in chess. Plus, the chess board seems to look like a hallway to me.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:10 pmI love the cover, I think that the red and white chess pieces have an interesting contrast. I can’t wait to read the first chapter!!!!
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:12 pmI like the cover, it’s intriguing and makes me want to read it to figure out the symbology.
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:21 pmThis cover art is driving me crazy! I want to know what it means. I read the first chapter to Breaking Dawn and instantly regretted it. Now I am literally hanging on the edge of my chair for that readt of the book. I’m so curious about Edward’s ‘after’ car and I can’t wait for Bella and Edward’s wedding. Sigh. Only like 30 days left!
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:32 pmI’m so excited and I can’t wait for the next book. I wish it wasn’t the last!(well at least from Bella’s point of view)
on June 30th, 2008 at 9:38 pmI was in a chat room the other day talking to this guy and we totally had a break through on the meaning of the cover. The red pawn is Bella and the white queen either symbolizes the vampire Bella, what Bella hopes to become, which is a vampire, or it is the volturi.
Let me explain…
A pawns goal is to make it the other side to become whatever it wants. Now the queen could be Bella or what Bella wants to become…or it is the Volturi. The queen is going to try as hard as it can to keep the pawn from becoming a queen…come to think of it, the queen could be Edward or even Jacob. Anyone who doesn’t want Bella to get to the other side of the chess board
I really like the Cover. It makes me think. Like, could it possibly have ANY meaning to the book? Like Twilight? What do the Pawns stand for? What does the Board stand for? Do the Colors of the pieces mean anything? Does red stand for Blood? White for the skin of the Cullens/Hale’s?
And, I have Already read the First Chapter. and It doesn’t Really sound Like Bella. She got to whiney. I still lover her, don’t get me wrong. But, If she REALLY loves him, why doesn’t she WANT to marry him? Other than her parent’s relationship.. but still. I mean.. if she won’y marry him.. I WILL!
on June 30th, 2008 at 10:14 pmidk i sort of like the cover but i think it could be better but either way im just happy the book is coming out soon
p.s. plz enter me 4 contest
on June 30th, 2008 at 10:52 pmI totally love the breaking dawn cover. I really think that Edward represents the red pawn and Bella of course it the white queen. I think she will for sure get changed and marry Edward.

on July 1st, 2008 at 1:09 pmI LOVE the cover design, its so pretty
Its very intresting
on July 4th, 2008 at 8:58 amI think this is by far the most unique cover yet,
on August 24th, 2008 at 6:17 pmI would really love to know what it really means, but I can only guess. It may represent the two different sides of the worlds of the “good” and “bad” vampires lurking in the shadows. It could also represent the wolves and the vampires. It’s a strategic game so that could be like in the book where the Volturi come in and there is so much planning and strategy involved. but like I said, one can oly guess.
i love the cover design
on March 5th, 2009 at 12:30 pmi saw a cover of a white wedding dress and a boquet or however you spell it for the cover
