Reading Hobby + Gardening Hobby = Book Tour with Stephenie Meyer
Ehh? Title make no sense?
Stephenie Meyer will be on a book tour for the new release of The Host (which comes out in just 11 days on May 6th) and will make not one, but two stops in Utah. I considered going, but something was holding me back (now I know why). First, to get in you had to not only buy a ticket, but her book as well. I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to buy the book right off the bat. I do have it on hold at the library. Thank goodness I did that months ago because I am number 181 out of 834 holds. I have never seen a book go up that high before! They have 263 books on order and since I’m below that number I should be among the first to receive their copy! Yay!
Anyways, back to the point. I recently went through the Master Gardener program through the Utah State University Extension. To receive my certificate, I had to complete 40 hours of volunteer work, mostly in the gardens at Thanksgiving Point, the same venue where Stephenie Meyer will be appearing. I haven’t volunteered since I got my certificate, but I still get all the emails about the different events asking for volunteers. And today this one showed up in my inbox:
Stephenie Meyer, Author of “Twilight”, “New Moon” & “Eclipse” Comes to Thanksgiving Point May 16th, 2008
Stephenie Meyer will be appearing at the Thanksgiving Point Show Barn on Friday May 16th to promote her most recent novel “The Host”. Volunteers will be needed to help check tickets at the door and help guest locate seats. This is a General Admission event, no reserved seats.
Date: Friday May 16th, 2008
Time: 6:15pm volunteers need to arrive for orientation. Event starts at 7pm.
Location: Thanksgiving Point Show BarnIf you want to volunteer for this event you will need to email me ASAP. There will only be 10-12 spaces open for volunteers.
He, he! I snagged a spot! My two interests collided and now I’m off to Stephenie Meyer’s book signing. If you happen to be going to this one, look for me there wearing my nifty little volunteer vest and ID badge. I just hope that I can read the book before I go, to potentially avoid any spoilers.
This is also the same day as the Provo Children’s Book Festival, a two day event which I’m planning on attending! These are just a few of the names that will be there Brandon Mull, James Dashner, Shannon and Nathan Hale, Sarah Zarr, Gerald McDermott, Jessica Day George, Anne Bowen, Rick Walton, Guy Francis, and Sherry Meidell. These are just the names that I recognize.
It’s shaping up to be a very bookish weekend!! Can’t wait!

You’re attending a children’s book festival? Jealous!!!
on April 24th, 2008 at 12:48 amIt’s great you did the Master Gardener Program. I’d love to do one if I can find the time.
on April 24th, 2008 at 5:36 amHmm. I could definitely attend but I’m not sure if I want to. While I have enjoyed her Twilight series I wouldn’t call myself a really big fan. But, I don’t get the chance to go to events like this very often so maybe I should just go for the experience. I’ll have to decide quickly since it will probably sell out soon.
on April 24th, 2008 at 6:43 amCongratulations on the Master Gardener certification. I would love to do this some day. How many hours was the actual program (not including volunteer work)?
on April 24th, 2008 at 6:32 pmTarie - He, he. And did I mention that it’s free?
Theresa - Thanks! It was always one of my life goals. I figured better later than never. I was one of the youngest in the class (I’m 29 now), but glad I didn’t wait. I LOVE gardening!
Kim - Yeah, I wasn’t sure either that’s why I didn’t buy a ticket. But if I can get in for free, why not? I’m excited to just see what the atmosphere will be like. You may enjoy going to the Provo Children’s Festival more.
Erin - Thanks. Well, not including the volunteer work, I spent about 2 hours in class, two days a week for about 10 weeks. So that would be about 40 hours in the classroom. Plus we had monthly workshops that we had to attend for about six months after that which were a couple hours. So there’s another twelve. In addition, we had to study our chapter units, complete worksheets and a take home final. So if you add everything up including volunteer, I’d round it up to a even 100 hours. I had a one year old at the time and I was pregnant and I managed to do it. So if I could do it, anybody could do it. Master Gardener’s are a great community of people, and we keep in touch with continued socials. At the time I did it, it seemed as though it was my only adult interaction.
