Analyzing My Blogs’ Keywords and Stats

I’m taking just a moment to see how far this blog has come since my first post almost six months ago. I’ve been celebrating my 100th post with an amazing giveaway! A total of 20 books to ten lucky winners. Check it out and get in on the action!

I remember the day when I had 15 visitors and I thought, wow, who are these people?? And then when I had my first out of the country visit I remember running down the stairs to tell my husband. I was so excited! I seriously have no idea if this is good or bad for me to analyze my stats and reveal my traffic. I mean I have absolutely no idea what type of traffic other book bloggers get, so I could really be embarrassing myself or I could be giving myself a nice pat on the back. I have no idea!

Anyways, I average between 150-275 hits a day and have had 5500 11,500 hits since I started tracking my stats which was probably sometime this past January. I’ve had visitors from all 52 U.S. states and from 82 different countries. It’s really fun to look at the map and see how global the internet is. How it really does tie us all together.

Roughly 74% of my traffic comes from Search Engines, 20% referring sites, and 5% direct traffic. 83% are new visitors and 17% are returning (I’d love for that returning percentage to increase).

My top five viewed posts are:
Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen
The Boy in the Striped Pajama’s by John Boyne

I also thought it would be fun to take a look at the different keywords that people have used since I started this blog almost six months ago. I’ve listed them exactly as they appeared and I also thought it would be fun to reply to them, especially as many of them are questions. Some are normal, some are strange, some are funny, and some I just can’t figure out.

  1. This is my first visit to you…a little late, but welcome to blogworld and happy blogiversary! I like your blog!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 2:29 am
  2. I love that you answered some of the search terms. I’ve already gotten “Water For Elephants PDF” today I wish I could email these people and point them in the right direction (like, perhaps, the library?). Or when I get the ones that say, “Mary Boleyn, nee Carey” and I want to be able to tell them that no, she was not born Mary Carey, that was her married name.

In other words, I love looking at my referrals and statistics, but sometimes they drive me crazy.

  3. I don’t know how to look at where my traffic comes from. On wordpress, you get to see a handful of referring sites on your stat page, but as far as I can tell there is no way to see what percentage comes from a search engine, etc. You seem to be doing great! Happy blogiversary!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 8:19 am
  4. *laughing* I love how you answered the search engine queries! It is a lot of fun to peruse your blog’s stats…I was amazed to see how many “hits” on my blog come from people searching for book reviews. There are a bunch of obsessed readers out there!!

By the way, congratulations on your 100th post - woo hoo! I’m enjoying your blog each day - keep up the good work :)

  5. This was so much fun to read. I am not surprised that you get so many visits! Congrats on your blog! :)

  6. Very funny, and happy 100th post! My favorite keyword search that directed someone to my blog was, “does this book make me look fat?” Ummmm….

    I really enjoy your blog!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 11:18 am
  7. What’s with all the poo smearing? I LOVED this post! What a great service to all of your searchers! I think we should all do this on our blogs. This must have taken you forever to do. I had so much fun reading all of this even though I haven’t read much that you mentioned aside from all the dicamillo and fablehaven books. fun fun fun!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 am
  8. Lol some of these are so weird. I’m lucky enough (or is it unlucky…?) to have had only normal searches related to my content linked to my blog. I can’t wait to have some crazy ones!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
  9. AH! You just said licking prostitute and poop smearing etc. again! I hope there are no terrible repercussions. I made that mistake once. I had a search for “animal sexe filmek” and I thought it was so funny I mentioned it in a post. And after that! Piles of gross people who wanted to see sexe filmeks about animals flocked to my blog! Fortunately, they never said anything. But I could just see them thinking, “Whatek? This isek juste a blogek aboute bookeks! Wherek isek the sexe filmeks?”

  10. Bybee - Hey, better late than never. Welcome, I’m glad to have you!

Devourer of Books - Glad to know that I’m not the only one who loves to look at the stats. When I first started blogging, I would wake up and first thing in the morning I would think, I wonder what my stats are like! I’ve calmed down a bit since then thank goodness.

LisaMM - I use Google Analytics to track my stats. It is amazing how much detail it gives me. Anything you want to know it can give you. I self-host on Wordpress, so I’m able to use a plugin that easily adds the code to my footer page for me. For Wordpress.com users I’m not so sure. If you can edit the footer file for your theme you can add the code that Google Analytics needs to track your site. You can find more info at http://www.google.com/analytics/indexu.html if interested.

Wendy and Jane - Thank you, thank you for always coming back!

Jill - I first read that as “Does this blog make me fat” I had to do a double take.

Chris - Yeah, I’ve had this in the drafts folder for a while now. You’ve inspired me, perhaps I’ll do a monthly post highlighting keywords. I copied these ones over probably about three weeks ago, so I’m probably good for a April edition. I thought people would think this was the most boring post ever so I’m glad that you enjoyed it!

Kathleen - Just wait! And it helps if you put in some poop smearing stories, etc.

Dew - Ha, ha! I read your comment and I seriously was laughing out loud. So, so funny! Maybe we should say it again - poop smearing, licking prostitute, poop smearing, licking prostitute, poop smearing, licking prostitute!! Okay, I’ve gone overboard now. I’m in trouble.

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
  11. UH OH.

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 6:00 pm
  12. “If you can edit the footer file for your theme you can add the code” Eh.. you lost me. I don’t know how to do that. Maybe my brother the computer wiz can help me out next time he comes over.

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm
  13. LisaMM - Sorry, I didn’t make much since did I. I’m not a real whiz at this kind of stuff either. Thanks to my computer savvy sister, she’s helped me out a lot.

When you download a theme, that theme has a lot of files associated with it and a file called footer.php is one of those files. When you sign up for Google Analytics, they will give you a code (a string of numbers) that needs to be added to this footer.php file. Because I self host my wordpress blog, I can do this simply through a plugin. I put my code in the little box and I’m good to go. For you, this is what I think you may have to do (key word: I think!). When in your blog, go under presentation and then theme editor. In the right sidebar you should see all the files associated with your theme, one of them called footer.php. Click on that file. At the bottom of the text box it should tell you if that file were writeable or not. If it’s not, I’m not sure what to do. If it is, then follow the directions that Google Anaytics gives you to add the code. Word of warning: copy all of the text from that file into a text file first, that way is something goes terribly wrong you can revert back to the original file. I certainly don’t want to mess anything up for you! I’m sure you could go to the forum at Wordpress.com and also get some good advice or help if Google Analytics is a direction that you want to go.

As for me, I love it. I don’t know what I’d do without it. Has a lot of helpful features. I hope that makes more sense or at least could get your brother headed in the right direction!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 7:39 pm
  14. Dew - Yeah, I may have to delete my comment if things get out of hand!

    on April 22nd, 2008 at 10:39 pm
  15. For keywords research try SeoDigger.com
It allows you to input a site URL and it will then show you the keywords that site has that will rank it among the top 20 in Google. It returns quite a few good answers and allows you to see the Wordtracker and Overture results as well.
One of the neat features of this site is that you can sort by the position, wordtracker ranking, overture ranking and also the most recent keyword request.

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 9:33 am
  16. Sounds pretty impressive–I’ve never checked my stats (don’t even know if I can with blogger). How were you able to see/know the search keywords from people?? Some very funny ones in there!

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 11:16 am
  17. Natasha, thanks for taking the time to give me all that info!! I’m going to see if I can do it right now!

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
  18. Nope, can’t do it.

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 4:30 pm
  19. LisaMM - Dang, after looking at Wordpress.com this is what I found:

    Can I use Google Analytics?

    No.

We already use Google Analytics code to monitor the domain in ways that provide us with useful information to benefit the service we offer. It is not possible to use two instances of Google Analytics on one page.

I may have steered you into a completely hopeless situation.

Trish - Google Analytics gives me all of this info. For each keyword used I know how many times it was used to get to my site, the day it brought somebody over, how many page views that user looked at, the average time on the site, if it’s a new or returning visitor and the bounce rate. It’s kinda fun. You would think that Blogger would have Google Analytics built into their product because their both Google products.

I found this website that talks you through adding the code to your blogger account. The post is a year old so I hope the information is not outdated: http://andywibbels.com/post/1389

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 4:39 pm
  20. Ha, ha - We were talking to each other at the same time. Looks like we came to the same conclusion. It was worth a try though.

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 4:40 pm
  21. Trish - Here’s another website for you.

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 4:56 pm
  22. Oh my goodness! I would spend WAY too much time looking that stuff up. By the way…look at all your comments! Maybe I need to do a giveaway like yours. :) I seem to spend much more time on other people’s blogs than they do mine…don’t really want to think of the implications of that!

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 4:57 pm
  23. I wanna learn more about blog statistics….

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 6:54 pm
  24. Trish - I have to admit that I’m feeling quite giddy about the success of this giveaway. So far today, I’ve had 46 comments! That’s more than I usually get in a month. And in one day! I’ve had to keep stopping myself to run up to the computer today to see “the latest.”

And I am feeling a bit guilty that I may not be leaving enough comments at other people’s blogs. I’m trying to repay the favor! Slowly, but surely.

Janelle - Anything particular. I’m sure I could at least point you in the right direction.

    on April 23rd, 2008 at 8:09 pm
  25. So I’ve just figured out that I haven’t been reading my Google Analytics correctly. The stats I gave where just from the last month and not from since January. It just made my day. I’m actually at 11,500 visitors. That’s double than I thought! Woo hoo!

    on April 24th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
  26. That’s a lot of hits - hope I can reach that someday:)

    on April 27th, 2008 at 4:54 am
  27. bravo! I am impressed that you answered all that! half of them sound like people who want you to write their book reports for them.

I used to follow my stats but the I got pregnant and all but stopped blogging and no one visits my inactive blog any more.
