Two New Arrivals: Bookmarks Magazine and What is the What
Ahhh . . . my Bookmarks magazine came a couple of days ago. I love browsing through and finding new books to add to my endless TBR list. And I thought I would give a shout out to Imani (aka A. White in the magazine) at The Book of My Numberless Dreams whose book list of her ten favorite books graced the pages. I’m adding Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie from her list to my TBR list. I’ve been wanting to read this for a while but I may have to bump it up.
Other books that caught my eye:
Women of the Silk by Gail Tsukiyama
Cat’s Eye by Margaret Atwood
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
The Lost Children of Wilder: The Epic Struggle to Change Foster Care by Nina Bernstein
The Flowers by Dagoberto Gilb
The Commoner by John Burnham Schwartz
Song Yet Sung by James McBride
The Fortune Cookie Chronicles by Jennifer Lee
Has anybody read any of these? Thoughts? Recommendations?
The other new arrival in the mail today is What is the What by Dave Eggars, which I committed to purchase. I read this book from the library but after finding out that 100% of the proceeds from the book go the the Valentino Achack Deng Foundation for lost boys from Sudan, I said that I was going to buy it. And buy it I did. I’m really excited to add this one to my library and this is the book that I think EVERYBODY should read. Read my review here. So excited about this one.
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

I read Never Let Me Go and rated it a 4/5. You can read my thoughts here.
I have What is the What on my TBR list, but if I remember correctly – it was a chunkster and that makes me shy away.
on April 17th, 2008 at 4:43 amI read Cat’s Eye years and years ago. I vividly remember one very disturbing scene, and I remember thinking it was a great book.
on April 17th, 2008 at 5:16 amI have not recieved the latest Bookmarks magazine yet. Jealous!
I’ll be watching for the mail man all day and then if it is not there today I’ll be all depressed!
(I love Bookmarks!)
on April 17th, 2008 at 8:31 amI have not read any of the book you have on your list…
Never Let Me Go was thought-provoking, and I enjoyed Ishiguro’s writing, but the characters were all flat to me. I started listening to What Is the What? on CD a while ago, but had to return it to the library, so I look forward to picking it up again and finishing it.
on April 17th, 2008 at 12:02 pmJoy – What is the What is thus far my number one recommendation of the year. Read it!
SmallWorld – Disturbing? Hmm . . .
Jeanette – Mine came two or three days ago. He, he. I do enjoy it.
Charley – I hope you finish What is the What, excellent!
on April 17th, 2008 at 12:57 pmI think Bookmarks will be the first thing I spoil myself with when my (undesired) break from freelance writing is over. I’ve had it in my Amazon wish list and drooled at it for years. Not that I need more books on my to-read list… (Which includes Never Let Me Go.)
on April 17th, 2008 at 5:21 pmI really liked Cat’s Eye–but I love all things Atwood. I haven’t read Never Let Me Go, but I own it and recently read his Remains of the Day (I recommend!). I haven’t read Purple Hibiscus, but I recently got Half of a Yellow Sun and have heard great things about both books. Happy reading!
on April 18th, 2008 at 6:12 pmI totally agree with you about What is the What. I wrote a short bit about it here. Unfortunately it is in the same post with Harry Potter, No. 7, but you can ignore that.

on April 19th, 2008 at 7:14 pmI’m here because I love book blogs. They are miniature windows of the literary world, virtual libraries
I do like this biblio-blog very much. I just discovered it.
on April 21st, 2008 at 7:36 amI read Never Let Me Go, and I think it was disappointing only because I just loved Remains of the Day and still think that nothing could ever match it.
As someone else said here I found the characters one dimensional and could never quite care about them, which was astonishing considering that Ishiguro wrote one of my favourite books of all time.
Sounds like a great magazine, if you ever want to “sell” your old copies let me know as I would love to puruse them!
