Do You Have Life-Long Reading Goals?
Well, I mentioned in one of my last posts that one of my life goals is to read all the Newbery Medal winners and Honor Books. What is a life reading goal? We all make goals, and many of us participate in reading challenges for the year, but what would you like to accomplish, speaking in terms of literacy, throughout your life and well, frankly, before you die? Because I’m making “life goals,” I don’t feel rushed or overwhelmed, but yet I’m constantly improving myself. I love lists. Even more, I love crossing things off of lists. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment.
Some of my lifelong reading goals:
- Read all the Pulitzer Prize Winners for Fiction
- Read all of the Newbery Medal and Honor books.
- Read at least 2-4 works from each Nobel Prize Winner in Fiction.
- Read all the National Book Award Winners for Fiction.
- Read all the Pen/Faulkner Award Winners for Fiction.
- Read all the ALA Notable Books for Fiction
- Read all of Oprah’s book club selections.
- Read at least 500 books from 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die by Peter Boxall.
- Continually participate in a book club, whether it be online or in person.
- Read with my children everyday.
- Read books out load as a family even when the kids get older.
- Listen to audio books on car trips.
- Discover a new genre (I normally don’t read fantasy or science fiction, but I’d like to give fantasy a try).
- Learn more about the authors I read by listening to interviews, reading biographies, etc.
- Keep on ongoing list of books mentioned in other books and read those.
- Read more historical fiction.
- Read more nonfiction, especially gardening and photography books.
- Always improve my life, enhance my life, and make a difference in the life of my family by continually educating myself and striving to be better today than I was yesterday.
Overwhelming! At least I’ve got a lifetime it’s give me tons of lists to choose from, and if I don’t get it done, that’s okay! At least I’ve had fun along the way.
Am I crazy, or does anybody else have anything that they are trying to accomplish?! I think that I may just be crazy. What are some of your goals?
Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

Hi, Natasha!
Life-long reading goals? Only about a million!
I think that’s why I’ve suddenly latched on to this whole blog/reading challenge business. You’ve got some great goals! Some of mine include:
Read the whole “1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die” list for no reason other than it seems interesting
Read all of Agatha Christie’s mysteries
Read all the Pulitzer Prize winners for fiction (Except “The Yearling”. I can’t go there.)
Read more fiction from other countries (especially attracted to fiction from India for some reason)
I could go on and on. I’ll be keeping track of all my projects/challenges on my blog. Feel free to come check up on me!
Happy Reading!

Lezlie – I checked out your challenges, looks like we are doing a couple of the same ones. I noticed you like to make lists, too. Fun! Besides my life-long goas, I do have a couple challenges for 2008. They can be found here. I’ve added you to my reader and look forward to checking up on your progress!
on January 28th, 2008 at 2:14 pmNatasha,
This is fun seeing what other book lovers do. I’m glad to have found your blog. You are an inspiration to all of us that want to read more.
I’d have to say I only have one reading goal right now and that is to find more time to read. I have two jobs that take up six days out of my week. Luckily I’ve found BookWise and am planning on firing one of my bosses in April of this year and the other one in January of 2009.
So I guess you could say I will be able to do new reading goals starting in May 2008.

Wow – some very worthy goals. It is a good thing you have your life ahead of you. My reading goals are to finish the kazillion challenges I’ve signed up for in 2008.
I love the look of your blog. It makes me want to move from Blogger to Wordpress.
on February 8th, 2008 at 8:21 pmMichelle – Time always seems to be the enemy isn’t it?
Booklogged – I know, I’m crazy, crazy! Always giving myself something to do.
Thanks for commenting on the look of my blog. I’ve only been blogging since November and didn’t know much about it beforehand, so I’ve learned a lot. I wanted this blog to have the same look as my main website where I have collected book lists, book club resources, children’s nursery rhymes, etc. That site was up only a month before I started blogging and I have still have tons of content to add to it.
I like simple, clean lines and this blog is definitely that! Content above all else. I’m happy with it!
on February 8th, 2008 at 9:52 pmWow, what a list! Some of my goals include reading the 1001 books to read before you die, review books that I have read and keep a journal of them (thank you Library Thing!) and read the Pulitzer Prize Winners. This year I have read a lot of historical fiction and am going to try a new genre, Science Fiction for a book review and blog tour. My goal this year was to read 50 books and I am already at 25 so it looks like I will exceed that.
on April 26th, 2008 at 3:02 pmErin – I think I created too many goals but I’m not stressing. That’s why I called them “life long goals.” No time limit! Yay!
on April 26th, 2008 at 11:15 pmI don’t really have life long reading goals but maybe I should pick one of these – it sounds like fun
on April 27th, 2008 at 5:14 amI set goals each year, but don’t have lifelong goals. This year I want to read 60 books, read at least 5 off a list I made of Big Books, 1 Russian novel, more my men, more non-fiction, continue blogging.
I had thought I wanted to read all the Newberys but I started with The Westing Game and just hated it, so didn’t really follow through.
on April 27th, 2008 at 3:29 pmI sort of have goals like those. But I started a Pulitzer winner (can’t remember which) a couple of years ago and I really didn’t like it: I couldn’t bring myself to read it. I’ll give them 50 pages, but if I can’t stand I’m not going to read it. There’s too much out there to spend my reading time on a book I really don’t like. Awards are given by committees and individuals. Just because those people liked it doesn’t mean that I will.
Booklogged: I’ve been selfhosting on wordpress and I thought I’d try blogger since so many people use it. I couldn’t stand how few options there are! Self-hosting gives so many options (but a lot of headaches, too…)
