What's so funny to me is that I don't think it would be offensive to most of the people I know if it had been a man doing what Isabel did. I think sometimes we can be a little homophobic but I don't think that was even the authors intent. She was just showing how manipulative Isabel could be. That’s so funny–”the” part. Now I'm in SL Valley (do they have a word for here?). Anyways, this book was also chosen for our also conservative book club, but our leader (Rebecca above) changed her mind after reading it. I still went ahead and read it, waiting for "the" part. After I finished I had to ask where it was, I just didn't see it. Oh, that part! :) I used to live in Happy Valley! I was captivated from the beginning and just loved the language of it. I recommended it for my very conservative book club (in Happy Valley) and then was embarrassed when some were a little shocked by one part. :) Oh well, they liked the rest of the book pretty well and we had a good discussion. It wasn't hard for me to get into. It was one of those books that grabbed me from the beginning. Like you, it made me want to reread some of the great gothic romances. Jane Eyre is easily one of my all-time favorites and I could read it over and over again. The Thirteenth Tale is a great story. I’m glad you liked it! It wasn’t hard for me to get into.
