The Festival of Trees – A Great Cause

Christmas TreeWhat an adventure! I’m a group leader for 18 eight to eleven year old girls and this year as a service project we decorated and donated a Christmas tree to the Festival of Trees. The Festival of Trees is an annual event where individuals, groups, and organizations decorate and donate a Christmas tree. These trees are then sold and every single penny raised goes to provide medical care for needy children at Primary Children’s Medical Center. Between 70,000 and 80,000 people attend the Festival of Trees each year. In other words, it’s a large event! I let the girls take the lead and they decided upon a candy themed Christmas tree (no suprise!). We strung life savers together for a garland, filled clear glass ornaments with M&M’s, each girl got to create their own candy ornament, we made bows and ribbons out of Hershey Chocolates, and more. It was a lot of hard work and took a fair amount of time, but it paid off! Our little tree sold for $400. I’m so proud of the girls and the chance that they had to serve others.

This time of year isn’t about ourselves. It’s the time to get out there and do some good. What traditions do you have in your family or community to serve others this or any other time of the year?

Hey you! Yes. You! I've noticed that you've stopped by to visit a few times! But I don't know who you are. Why don't you take a moment and introduce yourself. Don't be scared. I try not to bite. I know you're a lurker but I'd love to hear your thoughts about what's been bringing you here. And if you haven't done so already, don't forget to never miss a post by subscribing to my feed or receiving updates by email. Thanks for visiting!

  1. Your tree looks great. I’m sorry I missed attending the Festival of Trees this year. I would have loved to see it in person.

And wow – eighteen girls. Pulling off a tree with that many girls, eight to eleven, was quite an accomplishment.

  5. We’re doing this again this year. I bought everything we needed during the after Christmas sales. But now we’re doing two! One for the group of girls that I’m in charge of (church) and one as a family. It was a lot of hard work, but really satisfying.
